My latest ESPN column, which I thought was going to run today, ended up running yesterday while I was traveling. Some of you have already seen it; for those who haven’t, look here.
While researching that column, I received a contribution from reader Steve Johnston, who sent me a shot of the Hinsdale (Illinois) Central High School Red Devils. He wanted me to know about the “PTR” on their nose bumper, which is short for their slogan, “Pound the rock,” but I was actually more intrigued by their helmet design, with its little devil horns. “They’ve been wearing the horns for as long as I’ve known them,” Steve explained. “My dad wore them in the ’60s, and I’m sure it was going on a lot longer than that.”
Horns have always been an appealing helmet motif. They were, of course, the first design ever applied to a football lid, and people routinely tell me that the Rams’ helmet design is the NFL’s best, “because the design is part of the helmet, instead of just a logo put onto the helmet,” or words to that effect (plus I occasionally hear similar things about the Vikings, although their horns have always struck me as less attractive, because they’re supposed to be sticking outward, which means they’re more of an applied logo than an embedded design).
Until Steve sent me that Hinsdale Central photo, however, I’d never seen little horns on the front of a helmet. But then two photos showed up on Chris Creamer board, showing that very similar horns had been worn by the West Texas State Buffaloes in the 1960s and the Colorado Buffaloes in the mid-1950s.
Colorado, as it turns out, has used a surprisingly wide variety of horn designs over the years. In addition to the front horns in the mid-’50s, they wore this stylized design from 1959-61 (further info here) and this version — which happens to be my favorite — in the late 1960s (additional info here).
Antlers aren’t quite the same thing as horns, but they’re close enough for our purposes. But I’d never seen antlers on a helmet until a few days ago, when Riley Adair sent me some pics of the Buckhorn Bucks, an Alabama high school team (additional pics here and here).
This raises some interesting possibilities, because there are lots of other horn and antler styles out there. Imagine if there’s ever a team called the gazelles or the reindeer. Best of all, imagine the unicorns — now that would present a good design challenge.

Meanwhile, I had originally set this weekend as the deadline for placing orders for discounted gift memberships, but I’ve decided to extend that deadline to next Wednesday, the 5th.

As for today’s showcase design, it’s based on the early-1970s California Golden Seals.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Several people have mentioned to me that the mid-field logo at Sun Devil stadium had been altered for the Thanksgiving USC/ASU game, so that the devil was skewering a turkey leg, but nobody had a photo. But now Andrew Ranck has come up with one. Wish more teams would do holiday-themed tweaks like this. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: The U.S. Army is retrofitting a million of their uniforms due to “crotch durability problems.” Yes, really. … Decal maven Chris Willis reports that the Sean Taylor memorial decal will look like this, but I’m still holding out hope that some of the ’Skins will do something stripe-related. … The double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats have unveiled their new uniforms and logo designs, which you can see in this PDF file. Naturally, I like the color scheme and the vertically arched road-jersey insignia, but the rest of the design looks painfully rinky-dink.

The mid-field logo at ALLTEL stadium was tweaked for Jaguars/Cardinals game in 2000 season. It was the holiday season, and the Jaguar head painted at the 50 yard line had a Santa Claus hat added to it. Sorry I don’t have a picture of it.

My brother and I were talking about the Jags’ logo and how they haven’t done that for a couple of seasons. Always thought that was cool. Aside from unis, I love the subtle (some not-so-subtle) differences in playing fields. I think that Sun Devil Stadium has much more character now that they aren’t sharing it with the Cards anymore.
Paul, liked the bumper column. I wasn’t able to find a photo, but I recall Bears’ kicker Kevin Butler having “Butt Head” on his front and rear bumpers for a few games.

nice article paul…would there be any legality issues for a team actually adding horns to their helmets? ya know…just a couple nubs protruding out from the bumpers or something…now THAT would be schweet
a couple readers posted an article with these mockups of the jays and royals and their new HOME powder blue alts…anyone know if this is going to be like a “sunday red”-type thing such as the bravos & sawks do (or have done) the past couple seasons…or might we see these alts with more regularity?

I loved the write-up on the helmet bumpers. Pre-Uni Watch, I did not know that they were there for nose protection, instead figuring that bumpers existed for promotional purposes only.
Looking back, I should have figured this out when I watched “North Dallas Forty” as a kid and was perplexed as to why the offensive linemen kept getting bloody wounds to the bridges of their noses.

It seems that the Cowboy’s unique-ness even extends to their locker room. Whenever I see a Cowboy’s player being interviewed on TV in front of his locker, I know what team it is by the font of the player’s name on the locker.
I don’t know how long they have used this particular font for this purpose. I will be interested to see if they carry it over to the lockers in their new stadium.

I haven’t been able to find a pic yet, but the Deer Creek Antlers (high school north of Oklahoma City) used to have their mascot displayed on their helmets. A friend who went to school there told me you had to be tough to play with antlers on your head.

Very upset about the uni changes for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Not that I don’t like the uniforms, really, they aren’t all that bad. But I am more upset that they got rid of the Old Man of the Mountain sleeve patch (I couldn’t find a great picture, but you can kind of see it there). Sure, the old man is gone now but it’s still a big part of New Hampshire imagery.

I was at the Coyotes vs Wild game last night. That sure was a great looking hockey game! Being a Redwings fan, I didn’t much care who won, but I just couldn’t take my eyes off those beautiful uniforms. So simple, so clean. And that coyotes logo, perfect! I sound ridiculous, but honestly, it was beautiful.

I don’t know if they do it for every game, but I also noticed during the Arizona State game that the little arrows painted next to the yardline numbers were little pitchforks, and the 5 in the 50’s on the fifty yard line had little devil horns and a devil tail.

Don’t know if anyone else noticed this, but in that ASU-USC game on Thanksgiving Night, the arrows next to the numbers on the yard lines (40, 30 etc) were actually little pitchforks instead of arrows. Also, since the 50 is the middle of the field (and doesn’t have arrows)the 5 in the 50 had a devils tale (with a spike) on the end of it. I think this is great! Why don’t more teams do this? By the way, does anyone know why the arrows on the numbers are now required? They used to be optional in the NCAA, but now they are required. All those arrows do is point towards the nearest end zone. Is that so when you are watching the game on TV, you know which 30 yard line the offense is on (close to their end zone or their opponents)? It doesn’t make much sense to me, because the camera is usually panned back wide enough for you to see at least the next numbered yard line.

The change actually saved Batty and his staff some work for this game. This season, the Packers have a special patch on their green jerseys commemorating the 50th anniversary of Lambeau Field. But that patch would have to have been removed for a road game, and then replaced for the next home game.

I believe throwbacks have to be approved by the NFL ahead of time, and the teams have to designate what games will feature the uniform. The NFL won’t allow a “surprise” uniform, like Notre Dame coming out in green. Teams have to get special approval to wear a throwback more than originally intended, like the 49ers did in 1994.

Brett Favre wears a cold-weather jersey on rare occasions, with the handwarmer built-in, and years after the contract switched to Reebok he still dragged out the Nike version (because they apparently hadn’t thought to make him a new one).

-I’m tempted to send the Buffalo/Toronto Bills the photo of the West Texas State Buffaloes’ helmets to see if they would amend their current helmets to the ones in the picture..when they move out of town.

Just finished watching the Phillies new uniform press conference. I usually don’t like alts, and I was always proud of the Phils for holding out against the fad, by they don’t look too bad. Wasn’t a big fan of Cole Hammels going baggy, but J-Roll looked pretty sharp. The shiny red cleats don’t go well with the cream pants, but other than that, I’m happy. I don’t even mind the blue hat that much.

In high school we had 3 teams near us that would’ve had to change their names following the PC outbreak: the Port Clinton Redskins(speculated to change to the Walleye, for being the Walleye capital of the world), the Bellevue Redmen, and the Oberlin Warriors(which are now the Oberlin Phoenix)

It looks to me like the piece with the wordmark is separate from the actual bumper (I imagine for practical purposes such as being able to switch out the wordmark without removing the entire bumper). On most of those helmets it looks like the bumper is still there, but the “Not so useful” pic you linked to just shows the separate wordmark piece (confirmation Mr. Skiba?).
This one, however looks like there is no bumper at all. I imagine that the nose bumper is not as important today because of the increased padding in the helmet on the forehead (which would act as something of a bumper if necessary) and the tighter fit of modern helmets, but does anyone know of players that don’t use them today or any player ever going bumper AND wordmark free?

That is to say that the problem was that when the mask was pulled down, the top edge of the helmet (where the bumper is now) would get slammed into the players nose. The bumper made it a little softer when this happened.

I was just putting together my own blog post about the Phillies new uniforms and had the exact same reaction as you Rob B. When Hamels came out I was left wanting more, then the MVP came out and the uniforms actually looked pretty decent. It was only a matter of time befroe the Phillies put together some kind of uniform to make some more money, right?

Really? Seems to me the Princeton/Michigan design arrived in Ann Arbor in 1938 after a few years in Jersey. See: here & here.
I’d say that predates the 1948 Rams, who may be the first PRO team with a helmet design, but lagged behind at least two college teams.

The double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats have unveiled their new uniforms and logo designs, which you can see in this PDF file. Naturally, I like the color scheme and the vertically arched road-jersey insignia, but the rest of the design looks painfully rinky-dink.

i think – at least in years past – nhl teams were issued 2 sets of uniforms a year. if you made the playoffs, 3 sets a season. you can notice subtle changes a team would make on the second set. i remember the penguins changing their crest midway thru 71-72, changing from a screen on logo and numerals to sewn on crest and numerals in 88-89, nameplate changes for other teams, etc.
as for the playoffs, i recall the black hawks (as they were referred to at that time) adding outline color trim to their numbers in 1973, les canadiens changing the neck trim for the 77 playoffs, and the maple leafs totally changing their look for the 67 playoffs.
so, it was a fresh set to start the season, a new batch roughly around the all-star break, and if you made the playoffs, another new set.

In last nights Raptors | Grizzlies matchup the theme was spanish night in Toronto, but the Raptors did not wear their spanish uniforms, instead they wore their regulars-..weird. During the pre-season the Raptors were in Spain promoting the NBA and wore their uniforms reflecting the colors from the flag of Spain [as was noted by Uni Watch a few months back].

I believe throwbacks have to be approved by the NFL ahead of time, and the teams have to designate what games will feature the uniform. The NFL won’t allow a “surprise” uniform, like Notre Dame coming out in green. Teams have to get special approval to wear a throwback more than originally intended, like the 49ers did in 1994.
I do believe that the jersey color is the only preapproved part of the uniform. I recall a couple of years ago on a monday night game the Broncos warmed up in blue jerseys and white pants. When they returned to the field to start the game, they were wearing blue over blue.

Maybe things have changed, but the rules are less stringent in the CFL… I believe it was 1994 when the Calgary Stampeders (lead by Doug Flutie at the time) warmed up for the Annual Labour Day Classic game against the arch-rival Edmonton Eskimos. The team warmed up in the standard red jerseys, but when they returned to the locker room, there were bad-azz black jerseys hanging in their stalls. There was even a patch on the sleeves with a pair of guns and the slogan “quidquid requitur” (sp?), which is Latin for “Whatever it takes”. Needless to say, their appearance suprised everyone in the stadium, and they went on to beat the hated Eskimos.
A few additional notes – I could be wrong but I think they might be the first pro football team to have an alternate jersey. They wore the blacks each year during the Labour Day Game until 1998, when they started wearing them in the playoffs as well. During that time they went undefeated in black, culminating with the 1998 Grey Cup Champtionship (lead by Jeff Garcia). The 1996 Labour Day Game was also Jeff Garcia’s first CFL start; he threw for 6 TD’s that game while in black.

Currently watching the UEFA Cup match between Tottenham Hotspur (Eng) and Aalborg BK (Den) from White Hart Lane. Aalborg are wearing all-black kits rather than their primary red/white stripes, since Spurs wear white as their primary kit.
Looks like their shirts have a big block of black tape or something over the right breast area. Looking at their primary kits, I’m guessing it’s the logo that goes with their sponsor, Spar Nord.
Now, UEFA has restrictions on sponsors for UEFA competitions–for starters, I believe there can only be one sponsor on the kit. Interesting that they would have to cover the logo part, but not the wordmark, of their primary shirt sponsor.

I couldn’t find a still frame of the discussion earlier on the ASU game with the turkey or pitchforks. However on ESPN, the recap shows video shows the turkey, the pitchforks, and the pitchfork made into an “e” in “sun devils” in the end zone. (I know un-uni related, but there was discussion about it earlier.)

Looking at the helmet designs compiled from movies and television here, I pose several questions:
Check out the Dallas Knights helmet from “Any Given Sunday.” Has a real football team ever placed a logo on the front of its helmet?
Check out the Jackie O First Ladies helmet from “Married With Children,” and I wonder if there has been any sports team (not women’s) that wears pink?
My other question, not related to that site, is what is the Michigan helmet design meant to be?

This may be a stupid question, but, considering that the bumpers were originally designed to protect players’ noses, and since virtually every facemask used in football today protects the nose on its own, why keep the bumper at all? I undertand that Riddell sees it as a perfect billboard, but is it only there for “tradition” (and marketing) sake? Plus, because most facemasks today have a bar that goes right across the bumper, even if a nose were to somehow come in contact with the bumper, it would hit the bar first (i’m sure that would hurt)! Anyway… just a thought.

So I answered my own question. Here’s the new Fresno Grizzlies uniforms.
This is the best link I could get because it won’t allow you to get to a better picture from their website. Something is screwy with their link.
I like it better overall, but I wish they would have kept this hat and just changed it to match the new color scheme. Their new home and alternate hats, however, use this logo, but in orange instead of purple, which is what they used when they first moved from Phoenix to Fresno.

yeah…so…im one of the 98% of the nation that doesn’t get the NFL network…so im stuck watching the scarlet knights (in white) and the cardinals…who have donned the monochromatic black…sigh
cardinals are usually red, right?…i know SCARLET is red (and yet…they too wear black for ’special’ games)

MaxPro was a helmet company in the 1970’s and into the early 80’s (Roger Stabach and Rany White of the Cowboys used them) that didn’t use a bumper or a label across the front of the helmet. They eventually put the MaxPro name across the front and even added a bumper in the last years of the company (84-86).

It seems that the Cowboy’s unique-ness even extends to their locker room. Whenever I see a Cowboy’s player being interviewed on TV in front of his locker, I know what team it is by the font of the player’s name on the locker.
I don’t know how long they have used this particular font for this purpose. I will be interested to see if they carry it over to the lockers in their new stadium.
ive always thought of that font as “dukes of hazzard” font…
Isn’t it interesting that “The Dukes of Hazzard” aired right before “Dallas” with it’s opening credits shot of Texas Stadium during the 80’s!

They announced on espn radio today that all teams will be wearing 21 stickers. Thus my point.
Deion Sanders, sideline reporting for NFL Network, has one of the 21 stickers on his suit lapel. Deion, of course, wore 21 most of his career, both for the Cowboys and with the Redkins before Sean Taylor did.

I was watching the Boys-Pack game on nfl.com and I saw that looked like little strips of black tape above the right earholes on some of the players’ helmets. I wasn’t bale to get a great look, but it looked to me like it was being worn by only defensive players. Is this another subtle tribute to Taylor? Some hidden message from the Communist Party? Is it just late in the evening and I’m seeing things?

Also watching the Packers/Cowboys game tonight, and noticed Aaron Rodgers sporting the old school/Brett Favre style chin strap. He had also seem to have the “Tug ‘O Shame” down just like #4 as well. Does he typically wear the old style strap? Sorry if this has already been discussed, I just logged on and didn’t go through all the comments.

Also, I’m not sure if it is a rumor or the truth (I would lean toward the truth), but apparently the State of Connecticut owns the rights to the Hartford Whalers brand. Explains why they are not in any video games as alternate jerseys or out there as ‘retro’ apparel.

i was checking out the michigan high school helmet project and i found another type of horned helmet. Check out the leroy pine river stags. also check out the vandercook lake jayhawks.they have a cut in half “motion W” to make a “v” with the pillidelphia eagles head over it. im a little biased because its my alma mater, but i think they are toatlly boss

The thought of a team in any sport involving helmets (football, hockey, even baseball) with a unicorn horn on their helmets, or even the nickname “Unicorns”, nearly made me pass the rice I was eating through my nose. Its fairly easy to understand why New Braunfels went with NB, though I’d still feel pretty awful wearing “Unicorns” across my chest while getting nailed by a strong safety over the middle.
However, it wouldn’t be so unbelievable in cricket. That sport’s a little, you know, immasculine.
