We all have something to be thankful for today. In my case, it’s that my favorite team has traded for a player who wears stirrups every single day — even if they’ll be covered up by shin guards for half of the game. I hope the holiday brings each of you something similarly heartening. — Paul

Hi Paul.
What are stirrups [aside from the obvious use when riding horses]? I’m a very part time baseball fan and have noticed it mentioned a lot, but not really known what they are.
#2 by DCM on 11.22.07 9:20 am |
Poor soul! What better day to learn about stirrups than on Thanksgiving. Google an old time ballplayer and check out his socks, like the Mick: http://cache.eb.com/...
Striped ones are best, like the Braves, Cards, and Red Sox used to wear.

It looks like the Lions and Packers are wearing their normal uniforms on Thursday [no throwbacks]. Anybody else hear different?
#4 by Minna H. on 11.22.07 9:27 am |
Ok. Let’s try this part first:
Paul, you may be thankful for acquiring a stirrup-clad catcher, but I have to tell you I am very un-thankful for losing one of the best-looking and best-playing, if not best-dressed Twins, Toriiiiii Hunter to the LA Angels of Annaheim. A big gobble gobble to CraPohlad this Thanksgiving!
P.S. IAM thankful for the dusting of snow, however. I love snow.
P.P.S. I am caught in the spam filter and trying to reprint!

Now, let me try the first part again, although the question has already been answered:

Elliot, here’s a link to an example of “low stirrups”, as modeled by my all-time favorite team, the Big Red Machine.
Here’s an example of high stirrups, as worn by current Yankee coach Ron Guidry during his playing days.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Check out this story from Nashville. A high school girls basketball team had “illegal uniforms” and had to give up 18 technical free throws, 2 for each player wearing the illegal uniform. Anybody ever hear of anything like this?

Paul, you may be excited to see Estrada in all his stirrup-y goodness, but you’ll not be so happy to have him when he can’t throw out a single base runner and refuses to run out anything.
I’ll trade those stirrups any day!
#15 by Pam on 11.22.07 11:07 am |
The rules for high school basketball uniforms in Texas are similar. I have seen technicals given for players whose numbers were not given to the bookkeeper beforehand (almost always, someone has switched jersey’s and not told the coach). Also, no numerals over 5 are allowed. There is also a rule that says that players cannot enter the game with blood on their uniform. I have seen players switch uniforms and allow the other team to shoot technicals so that a better player can get in the game.
#16 by Math on 11.22.07 11:10 am |
Enjoy those stirrups whilst you can. This will be his 4th team in four years. He’s the most unathletic player in sports, let alone baseball. Weakest arm at catcher in the majors. Usually comes off as lazy.
But yeah, the stirrups will be there every game. Which counts for something, I guess.

I totally agree with you Nicole. Estrada hit .278 with 10 home runs and 54 RBIs last season. Estrada underwent knee and elbow surgery immediately after the season, and the elbow injury likely contributed to his trouble throwing out baserunners. Estrada threw out six of 79 baserunners and ranked last in the Majors with a 7.6 percent success rate. I will miss the stirrups for sure (He especially looked great on retro Fridays) But I am glad to have Jason Kendall in his place. So that is something that Brewers fans are thankful for.

The National Federation (the high school governing body) set up these basketball uniform rules three years ago (mainly, all home teams must wear white, among other things). The Federation gave schools three years before the uniform rules became mandatory. For something like this to happen is inexcusable.
Same thing for the football uniform rules, which I belive become law in ‘09.

I like to get behind the rising tide of public opinion demanding, on a now practically daily basis, that the Orioles return “The Bird” to their caps. The 1966 model — black cap with orange bill — should be the standard that Baltimore fans rally around.
On a similiar topic, the time is now for “Baltimore” to return to the road jerseys. Now that the Nationals are in residence down the road, let’s not stand for the argument that the Os are a regional team and that having the name of Charm City across the players’ chests might offend some outlaying sensibilities.

My first choice would be to return to the ‘66 uniforms — not only as a matter of taste, but in order to wake up the echos and hopefully point the way to the road back.
On the Blue Jays, I thought the original road models — all blue with the bird profile, ball & leaf — was a solid look.

Meanwhile, several readers pointed out an additional Cowboys annoyance that Uni Watch neglected to cover: The sleeve stripes on the team’s white jersey are outlined in black. This quirk, which dates back to the Landry/Staubach era, makes absolutely zero sense, since no other Dallas uni component is black-outlined. In fact, there’s no black anyplace else in the Cowboys’ design scheme, which means the black-accented stripes are yet another rogue element. Unique? Very. Annoying? Exceedingly.

Also, to the dude that thinks the Falcons ripped off UGA, the Falcons’ original colors were red, black, white and gold, as evidenced by the wonderful original Falcons displayed in an earlier post. Red, black, and white to honor the Dawgs, black, white and gold for Georgia Tech. It’s called an homage, not a ripoff.
