Here’s Why You Lost, Kid

clowns

You’re wearing clown makeup. And clowns suck at football. Sorry.

Eye black on a sunny day: part of the game.
Full-on face paint: clown.

Looks like a baby Chris Hovan. Next thing you know he’ll be wearing a tank top.

Didn’t John Randle start doing that to promote NFL Blitz or something? wish I could find a photo of that…

Good to see the intern thinks it’s funny to poke fun at what looks to be a high school student? That is pretty mean, and you shouldn’t have to resort to that.

Was he trying to copy “The Ultimate Warrior”? Anyhoo, give him a break, it’s high school, kids do dumb things. this is asinine, but not criminal.

“The question is ‘How much more black could it be?’ and the answer is ‘None. None more black’”

Nigel Tufnel, Spinal Tap

I like the topic, but the cotext of the pic is a tad harsh. Are we looking at a comprehensive article soon?

I play HS football and its almost comical how much eye black some kids put on. Its almost like a game “Who can put on the most eye black?”

a couple years ago for our last game of the season, the senior class did the mask thing as in the picture above. we were playing a catholic high school and the kidswere actually freaked out by us. it was quite amusing…

It is very important that today’s comment section NOT devolve into a long series of movie quotes. No more, please.

I started doing the eye-black thing in 8th grade when I saw an ESPN gameday special about Chris Hovan at Boston College. I thought it looked cool. We had black helmets with black facemasks, so all you could see was, in the words of an opposing quarterback, “my beedy little eyes”. It was an intimidation thing.

And don’t knock the kid. I cried when we were knocked out of the playoffs my senior year.

Spelling error “beady, not beedy”

I always went for the zebra stripes in lacrosse. My coach told me that I looked “like a fucking idiot”.

here’s a dollar that if clemson wears primarily purple tonight they lose

or more purple than just trim

Did anyone see the Lakers-Pistons game last night??? I think i went blind for awhile afterwards. all the yellow and red looked horrible.

Hey new intern,
Large part of what I liked about this site was that it didn’t resort to cheap shots for a quick laugh like 99% of the blogs out there. Thank for ruining it. It’s one thing if you don’t like the gratuitous eye black (and who does?). Why do you have to insult some high school kid?

worst. post. ever. strike 1 for the new intern

I must say, I gotta side on the end of the intern on this one.

Can we really stop treating high school athletes like they are six.

There are high school students on this very blog that post comments that are as intelligent as any other.

An 18 year old kid really isn’t beyond criticism.

It seems way to PC for me.

Sorry, Paul. Won’t happen again.

Hey, is that eyeblack kid wearing a Rawlings football jersey? Never seen one of those.

i totally agree…in this day and age, DON’T post yer pics on flickr if you think someone, somewhere isn’t gonna take you to task for it

also…i think bryan’s point in actually posting the pic, and i could be wrong here as i didn’t play HS football, is that he probably should have chosen an ‘eye black’ that won’t run…kinda like mascara or clown makeup…don’t manufacturers make ‘pads’ or something that works like eye black that work as well or better?

/there IS no crying in football
//anyone who can work a spinal tap quote into a thread gets a tip of the ol’ cap in my book…quite possibly the greatest movie EVAR

Haha I like your style Bryan. Well done.

Let’s keep things in perspective here — the kid lost a football game — that doesn’t mean he is above criticism. I don’t believe Bryan was making light of the genuine emotion he was feeling, but of his, well, clownish appearance.

Wow, a bunch of heartless bas…..nevermind. Part of me wants to laugh only b/c he does look like an idiot. I hated people that did that with the eye black when I played. But then again, we play high school football at night in Ohio, so it really makes the people look stupid.
but then again, I feel for the kid. We lost to our biggest rival when i was a SR, and I was so pissed I dented my car and was in tears, (we played them at the end of the season, and it was the end of my year then). shit, what do I do?

go buckeyes!

Haha. Hilarious post Bryan.

Say what you want about the face paint, but give the kid a break for crying.

That’s from the Nebraska class D2 state finals (the lowest class in Nebraska). They play eight man and it’s a huge deal to those kids to come to Lincoln and play at Memorial Stadium.

Elgin led most of the game, but lost a fumble deep in Chambers territory. Chambers had a 65-yard scoring drive to take their first lead of the game with 2:05 left.

It’s one thing to lose in the finals, but coming from ahead to lose by four points is several times worse.

Wow, a lot of grumpy people posting today. ;-)

Hmmm. If they lost, then why does he have a medal around his neck? I’m casting my vote for cheap shot, regardless.

If the kid lost, what’s with the medal? (And actually, if he won, what’s with the medal?)

Indians’ third base coach Joel Skinner is modeling the Indians’ new alternate uniforms on MLB.com - see the gallery on the bottom left corner.

Are we 100% certain it was too much eyeblack? Methinks he applied it in the conventiona fashion and wiping his tears resulted in that look.

It’s getting less and less informative around here. First praising the end of Breast Cancer Awareness month so there’d be no more pink, now knocking on a kid for wearing eye paint. Get a photo of Chris Hovan John Randell or Kevin Greene and post that.

KNOW WHY THIS SITE IS LOSING IT.
The new intern is a clown and everyone knows clowns can’t write.

Are we 100% certain it was too much eyeblack? Methinks he applied it in the conventiona fashion and wiping his tears resulted in that look.

You can see on the right of the photo there is another kid whose eye black appears to be in the same triangular shape, despite not being diluted by tears. Bryan has a legitimate point, although I think that this post had less to do with the actual uniform component than it did with the kid crying. Do I think he should be crucified for calling the kid a clown? No. Do I think that he should keep his posts primarily uni-related? Absolutely.

Hmmm. If they lost, then why does he have a medal around his neck? I’m casting my vote for cheap shot, regardless.

In this day and age, you have to make kids feel “special” and reward them for everything they do, hence the medal for loosing.

I would rather see a guy with the black smeared down his face from moisture than some college clown with his Area Code written on his eye black patch in silver marker.

If the kid lost, what’s with the medal? (And actually, if he won, what’s with the medal?)

Nebraska gives out gold medals to the state champions in all sports, and I never realized it, but apparently they also give silver ones to the runner-up.

I always thought ZIP code on the eyeblack would be a better representation of where you are from.

What I find interesting, especially with our discussion on race several days ago, is that people apply this eye black in effort to make themselves look more intimidating. Does that mean that we, as a society, find black skinned people more intimidating? I can’t help that think that if white kids paint themselves black to look scary, then black people are scary. And I do think this warrants comparison to an old time minstrel show.

The more I look at that kid, the more I respect him.

After reading the details about the Nebraska class D2 state finals, I now realize that kid left everything on the field after what was probably the most important game that kid will ever play in. Eight-on-eight football between two tiny schools in the heartland is what football is all about. Cruel insults are not.

Insults

… people apply this eye black in effort to make themselves look more intimidating. Does that mean that we, as a society, find black skinned people more intimidating?

um…no

i think people apply eye black to keep the friggin reflection of the sun (or lights if worn at night–what up wit dat?) out of their eyes

um… read post #11

um… read post #11

i DID read post #11…so your point is well taken in that context…my point however, is that the ORIGINAL intent of eye black was to keep the reflection out of their eyes…whatever people choose to do to make themselves more “intimidating” (whether it be mascara, ink, etc.) is their own business…i highly doubt skin color has anything to do with it

does john randall wear eyeblack to look “more intimidating”? prolly…did this kid do it to look “more intimidating?” if so…we have even MORE RIGHT to laugh at him

you wanna look REALLY intimidating??? wear friggin green and look like the hulk

In my four years of high school football I never thought eye black would be a good idea because this is what it turns into after a half in relatively warm weather. I’ve played with those crazy -asshole type of line backers that would look like the ultimate warrior and by the half they looked trick-or-treaters and would end up having to wash their face off before going back out on the field.

For those of you saying it’s cheap or in poor-taste to call the kid a “clown” you probably haven’t played football. Coaches will get in your face and verbally assault you for 3 hours on the field to the point where some of the kids would break down and cry. Being called a clown would have been the least of my worries.

If the kid lost, what’s with the medal? (And actually, if he won, what’s with the medal?)

Nebraska gives out gold medals to the state champions in all sports, and I never realized it, but apparently they also give silver ones to the runner-up.

Ah ok, when I played youth baseball we got trophies for winning (and I think plaques for being runner-up). When I played football we never got anywhere near winning, so I have no idea what they issued. I always assumed a trophy.

Anyways, the kid is a runner up state champ, and is obviously emotional because he cares about winning and they lost this game. I saw it as a light hearted jab at a silly trend (although eye-black has pretty much always been war paint, has anyone ever noticed some huge glare off of their cheekbones?).

I heard something on this sort of thing on the radio not that long ago, a station was discussing something about a local college player giving some stupid quotes to the media. One of the hosts is a writer for the Detroit News and he said that he makes an effort not to go after high school or college players. He will criticize the coaching staff, the school, or general team play, but won’t single out players. He said it is partially because he has a public voice and they do not, and he doesn’t feel that it is fair. He thinks pro athletes are a different deal and are fair game.

I think the equivalent here would be some criticism of the uniform or the medal (administrative decisions), vs making fun of an individual kid.

Not that it ruined my morning or anything.

Anyways, check out this cool new NBA ad. Well done.

Did anyone see Brazil-Ecuador last night? Brazil came out wearing jerseys with no names on the back.

I can’t find any pictures. . .

How is pumping yourself up with the eye black before a big game and different than wearing odd-colored laces in your shoes? Wildly painted goalie’s masks? Strange socks? Wristbands?

So you personally don’t eye black masks; I don’t like helmet stickers, Get over it.

I thought one of the purposes of this blog is to recognize/praise athletes who did something a little unusual in the name of competition.

Save the catty insults for Perez Hilton.

Anyways, check out this cool new NBA ad. Well done.

I just saw this on TV and loved it. (I wonder if Durant was picked as a request for Seattle to help.)

One man’s “clown” is another man’s “fierce competitor”

wow has no one seen the kid in the bg on the right side with the black triangles under his eyes?

that means the front kid’s eye black didn’t smear, he and some of his teammates decided to “look cool” and rub black paint all over their faces, which is also really dumb and undignified. im a high school student and i think its alright to criticize high schoolers, we’re not little kids anymore, once we hit those teenage years we start making decisions for ourselves, so if we do something wrong or stupid, we should get derided for it, even if it means being made fun of. i dont think anyone should take it personally however, bryan’s only making fun of the way he looks, not anything serious. thats what this site does all the time anyways, right?

What I find interesting, especially with our discussion on race several days ago, is that people apply this eye black in effort to make themselves look more intimidating. Well I have never seen a black man my entire life and if I did I would crap myself in fear. I have seen men and women in various shades of brown and no I do not fear them, they are human beings just like you and me. Why on Earth does everything these days devolve into a race discussion? Are we that afraid of trying to put it behind us that we need to bring it to the front of the line when we see it?

I always saw the eye black as more of “dirty look” not a “black face” look. It gives the appearance of dirty, rough and not caring about appearance which is important to kids who cannot even grow peach fuzz yet. Notice in college and the NFL you see a lot of players with 5 o’ clock shadows and things like that, it makes them look grizzly and rough.

So let us avoid going down the race path with todays comments.

Also, you can see the wipe marks from crying and it is obvious that the black was not originally as large as it appears now. By the looks of it he starter at the base of the eye socket down to just above the nostrils, continuous sweating along with wiping tears undoubtedly led to the “clown face”. I am sure anyone who has worn eye black here will attest, it will run after a couple hours of sweating and wiping your face. It gets everywhere.

As for the post, it does feel more like poking fun at a 16 or 17 year old than it does uni-related. I am more amazed at how large the “EAGLES” wordmark is, the font size rivals that of the TV numbers.

Italy vs Scotland today…

My hometown was in the Nebraska Class C1 state finals last year, and we lost on a missed extra field on un-regulation size goal posts. I was there and even the biggest toughest guys on the field were crying. It means a lot to the players and hear their name over the speakers and get a medal, even if it is 2nd place. They worked hard for 4 or 5 months to get there, and they deserve everything they got. (speaking for every other 2nd place team as well)

i totally agree…in this day and age, DON’T post yer pics on flickr if you think someone, somewhere isn’t gonna take you to task for it

I may be wrong here, but I believe that the pics don’t necessarily originate on flickr. They are saved and then uploaded there to ensure that the links remain good.

I’m sure Paul can correct me if I’m wrong.

Bush league comment. Unnecessary.

Horrible job, intern. Very disappointing.

CBA has some missing unis:

Anderson, 37, coached the first game of his career Friday night, defeating the Albany Patroons 110-106 in a nearly three-hour slogfest at Washington Avenue Armory. The teams play again at the Armory on Saturday night.
Maybe by then the Pats’ game jerseys will arrive; they played in practice unis Friday. Welcome to the CBA, Kenny.

The story is here.

Here is a shot of the Patroons in practice jerseys for their home opener.

Going after high school kids now? Very big of you guys!

And to those that say “Well it’s on the net so it’s fair domain..” give your heads a shake! Maybe the kid had no choice in the matter. Championship game, showing emotion after the game.. newspaper and web site editors live to publish that kind of stuff.

I doubt the kid went to the first camera person he saw and said “Hey, my team just had their hearts ripped out in a close game, I’m pretty upset about it.. wanna take my picture and then put it on the net for some intern hack to mock?”

Yeah.. I’m sure that’s exactly what happened.

Where this blog used to be unique, it is quickly becoming the insult and complain-fest that most others already are.

Paul-Please do something!

Rough crowd today!

As far as the conversation “devolving” into a race discussion, I have to agree. By intimidation factor, I also thought the poster in #11 meant something more along the lines of a black helmet with a black facemask and black “war paint” made you feel and look like a badass, thus throwing the other school off-guard. I don’t know how you could possibly interpret that to mean that he wanted to look like a black guy (or African-American, be that as it may)….

Very nice! I don’t even like the Indians but those are sharp.

Now if they’d only dump Chief Wahoo from their hats and go over to the block C (or anything else) they’d be cooking…

Observations on the reverse of eyeblack — In other parts of the world, white zinc oxide sunblock is far more prevalent on the field (with global warming and depleting ozone this may be a growing trend). In particular, the cricket teams of the Subcontinent seem to be regular users - in particular Sri Lanka. Below is feared bowler Lasith Malinga with his war paint:

freudian slip or typo?

Read post #38 and a couple after that to see where that came from.

You’re wearing clown makeup. And clowns suck at football. Sorry.
Lots of guys on my high school’s football team wore some intense eye black, but last I checked, 5 state championships in a row don’t lie. I guess there are some pretty talented clowns out there.

Anyways, check out this cool new NBA ad. Well done.

I just saw this on TV and loved it. (I wonder if Durant was picked as a request for Seattle to help.)

I have probably watched it 10 times. It’s cool. I wonder if they used his actual old jerseys or re-created them. (They did leave the swoosh on his Texas uni, which is actually cool in this case, as NBA jerseys are Reebok/Addias).

I think it was fair game. He just pointed out that the guy looked like a goon, not that he was crying or that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s not like he took a shot at tee-ballers…

I really like the new (old) Indians alt and hat. I also enjoyed that Skinner’s name was misspelled in one of the captions as ‘Sinner’.

In double checking who makes NBA jerseys, I noticed this description of the Swingman model on the NBA Store site:

The team-colored jersey is officially licensed and proudly displays the screen-printed tackle twill team name and player’s number at the chest, along with the player’s name and number screen-printed and tackle twilled on the back.

Screen-printed tackle twill? Are they trying to say the team/player names are screen printed and the numbers are tackle twill, or is there something I am missing here?

In one of those Indians uni pictures, the caption calls him ‘Sinner’.

Gotta love Freudian slips…

I don’t mind that a high school with silly eye-black was mocked for looking like a clown, but why use this photo? Why not use a photo of the same kid when he’s trying to act tough or cool, as opposed to one showing him in heartbreak after a loss?

On the Swingman jerseys the numbers, names and team logos are all sewn on like tackle twill but are not multilayer like actual tackle-twill. The tackle twill look is screened on a piece of material and then mounted on the jersey. I believe the Swingman jersey you are referring to is made by Nike. The authentic jerseys are made by Adidas.

Horrible job, intern. Very disappointing.

If you’re going to insult someone, at least learn his name. His name is not intern. Just like many of you are saying that the HS kid worked hard to get to where he is,Bryan has worked very hard to get to where he is. So don’t patronize him just because you don’t like his post today.

Luckies. I want a job like that.

The Pitt Panthers are wearing their 5th combo of the year breaking out their Gold Jerseys. This years gold paired with blue pants looks much better than the all gold last year

Holy freakin’ crap. Take it from a current high school senior and stop being all politically correct on behalf of some kid that does indeed look like a clown.

BTW, Pitt is wearing gold tops with blue pants vs. Rutgers.

Ah, got be too it on the Pitt jerseys. I like the gold jerseys as long as they aren’t paired with the gold pants (like vs. L’ville last season).

yea last year the golds didnt even match cause the pants were faded while the jerseys were brand new

I’m sure someone has seen it before, but Maryland has white numbers on the back of their white helmets. You can only see it when the sun hits it just right on TV, but they are definatly raised numbers on the back bottom-left of their helmets.

But, but he GOT A RIBBON, so it’s OK!

Ah ok, when I played youth baseball we got trophies for winning (and I think plaques for being runner-up). When I played football we never got anywhere near winning, so I have no idea what they issued. I always assumed a trophy.

If Nebraska is the same as MN, each kid in the championship game gets a medal (gold for 1st, silver for 2nd), and each team gets a trophy to display in their school.

The eye black thing is silly. Just one more embarrassing thing my Vikings are known for (thanks John R and Chris H)

Very true, the helmet/jersey/pants all seemed to be different shades of “vegas gold”.

Nigel Tufnel, Spinal Tap

It is very important that today’s comment section NOT devolve into a long series of movie quotes. No more, please.

Perhaps a devolution into movie quotes wouldn’t have been so bad after all.

Besides, wasn’t Stuby’s quote as appropriate if not more so than Bryan’s.

“How much more (eye)black? None. None more (eye)black.”

A pretty clever play off of Bryan’s referrence, if you ask me.

I’m scoring this one a hit for Stuby. Nice job!

Most hilarious thing I’ve read on here ever, haha.

To my fellow uniwatch enthusists-
I am the author of post #11, which seems to be getting a lot of “hype”. Never did I mean to say making myself look African American made me look tougher. I was not implying that at all (see post #38). When I first did the Hovan-esque “war-paint”, I wanted to look like Chris Hovan, who aside from Andy Katzenmoyer from Ohio State, was my favorite player at the time. When I was 14, my grandmother told me a horror story about a pair of floating eyes, representing evil spirits from centuries past. That’s the message I wanted to convey to my opponents. I wanted to get in their heads.

I came to the UniWatch blog site today looking for my regular fix of good stories and comments and instead I find The Creamer Forum.

Yech! Stop with the barbs and insults…it’s friggin eye black…you win and it was the eye black and you lose and you look like a douche bag…life is not fair.

FYI- The TB PadRays new unis are just embarrassing.

http://www.gatewayga...

ummmmmmmm…talk about make up

my golden gophers instead of peeing all over them selves like earlier in the year have decided to take a crap on themselves and go all maroon vs. bucky today.

One more time: Message received re: today’s content. Please move on to uni topics.

#55’s eye black?

I was more crabby because that kid needs a haircut. Bah! These kids today, I’ll tell ya.

http://www.gatewayga...

ummmmmmmm…talk about make up

Gateway is the same team that has had about a million different uni combos this year. They also got a ton of help from the refs last night in their playoff game against North Allegheny.

Hmm, I don’t know what to really make of the FSU all-garnet look, I prefer the gold pants with the garnet jersey. When the Lakers game ended last night, Kobe took off his compression sleeve and flung it to a fan in the stands, I had never seen him do that before.

Commenting on the Tribe’s new home alt.

Have they rebuilt Cleveland Municipal Stadium? That is a serious downgrade IMHO. Very plain, no names on the back, who do they think they are, the Yankees?

Gotta say, Ole Miss’ uni’s are good looking and under-rated. It’s classic look. Though I’d prefer a different look for the side of the helmet.
Just sayin’

Can’t wait for the Cowboys-Skins game tomorrow.

I have always been intrigued by the fact that both teams wear white at home and thus the other has to wear their ugly dark jerseys, which both teams rarely wear.

Looking forward to the Skins getting the beatdown in those horrible brown/burgundy/whatever jerseys!

I had the Spain-Sweden game on GolTV (Si, habla Ingles there), and saw that the adidas-clad Spanish XI had a new numbering and lettering system on their unis. Can anyone get a picture, please?

After watching Harvard and Ole Miss today, I can’t say enough for football pants that are a totally different color from the jersey. Throw the Giants in there as well. Muted colored, classic looking pants. Enough of the West Va., Oregon, etc. monochromatic crap.

my golden gophers instead of peeing all over them selves like earlier in the year have decided to take a crap on themselves and go all maroon vs. bucky today.

Last week I saw them bust-out the Maroon pants and thought to myself “Dear God, they’re gonna go all-maroon next week”… Maybe it’s best that I can’t find the game on my TV (I’m a Badger fan, just happy they got rid of the red pants)… BTW, flipped quickly to the FAMU-Bethune Cookman game and the Bethune jerseys are possibly the BUSIEST jerseys in all of college football, as well as quite the stylin’ head coach

And in reply to some earlier posts, my retinas are still burning from watching parts of the Pistons-Lakers game last night… Ouch!

Totally agree — specifically, I think it is the grey pants that make the Ole Miss and the moleskin colored pants that do it for Harvard. These set a classic look that should be used for both the home and away sets.

Last night the Albany Patroons had their season opener and had to wear practice uniforms. Just another example of how badly managed this team is.
They are the ones in the white and green.

I didn’t realize the CBA still existed.

Whoah there chief, I think your reaching pretty hard with that take.

Does that mean Alice Cooper was following that same pointless jump in logic?

Especially since football players who were fans of Alice Cooper and Kiss and the like were part of what started the “Creative Eye-black” thing, and I sincerely think that a “minstrel show” was the farthest from thier minds.

Folks may have had a small point when talking about the Georgia “Black-out” game, but certainly not this.

The other teams jerseys are pretty terrible too, couldn’t tell who was in Practice uni’s and who wasn’t

Speaking of Clowns. I guess this may be one of the “without make-up” variety.

Good shot not only of the non-Golden Gophers all-maroon unis, but an FNOB shot of Mike Sherels. Brother Marcus was a walk-on last year and played in a handful of games up to now but I couldn’t find any photo of him.

I had this conversation with a friend of mine a few years ago, I am so sick of the overuse of eyeblack. Without going into the debate as to whether it really does anything or not, I just think it’s out of hand with the kids painting up their faces.

If I was a high school coach I would not permit this. How this any different from kids want to wear different equipment to separate what they look like. I had a few coaches that basically said “all or nothing” when it came to things like tights under or over socks, shoe color, etc.

I probably would say no to the traditional eye black but let the kids wear the strips. But I’d make sure to get the ones with the Mueller logo so they could write on them in marker. Oh, and they’d have to wear them correctly and under both eyes, not some of the crazy vertical patterns or doubled up looks you see on college sidelines these days.

The Yellow jerseys have looked aweful this year…Or has that just been the Golden Gophers play on the field?

When I first read your comment I thought ‘why the hell is Ole Miss playing Harvard?’. I’m OK now.

I agree Ole Miss has some good looking unis. Today was the first time I’ve seen Kansas this year and they look pretty good - sort of like a royal blue version of Ole Miss.

RE: The Florida Classic game (FAMU vs BCC) is a wonderful fashion show between the Head Coaches in their Pimp Suits and the ladies in the stands with the 6 foot diameter hats! Gotta love it! I still don’t know why they play that game at the Citrus Bowl though…horrible stadium and neither team is from the O-Town area…

There is a fine line between keeping players from looking stupid and snuffing the small nuances that make uniforms unique to a player. If people in charge had such “all or nothing” feelings pretty soon this site would be gone and the personality behind uniforms would be gone.

That is something I do not want to see in my lifetime.

I can understand a coach wanting to maintain a certain uniformity among his players, but not letting players use the stick wouldn’t be my choice. I’d go with giving the players a choice between stick or strips, with the requirement of both being limited to the upper cheeks. I wouldn’t care so much if the kids wanted to write something on their strips, as long as it’s not profane or downright stupid. In other words, I’d have just enough regulation to keep things consitent, but not so much that the players feel like they’ve handed in their personality when they walk in the locker room.

I have the Michigan St-Penn State game on in the background and they just showed the Spartans sideline. It looks like number 38 for the Spartans has a nameplate with a lower-case “i” on it, it says “DAViS-CLARK”
