The FNOB phenomenon (for those of you who just got on board, that’s short for “full name on back”) is shaping up as one of our most durable subject areas, as contributions continue to pour in.
If you missed our two previous two examinations of this topic, they can be found here and here. Once you catch up on those, check out the latest additions to the list, which break down like so (with the caveat that I’m only listing examples for which we have photographic evidence):
College Football: John Houlik (note the very unusual cap/small-cap style of his first name); Brian Jackson; Breon Jackson (and in addition to those last two, Louisiana Tech also has a Brannon Jackson, but no photo of him yet); DJ Hall (assuming you consider “DJ” to be a legitimate first name; also, note that the Tennessee player, Henley, appears to have a double-layered nameplate); and Kevin Burrus (whose brother Keith also goes FNOB, but I haven’t found a photo of him yet).
NFL: Darrell Reid (we had already listed teammate Dexter Reid last time around); Randal Williams; Bracy and Brian Walker; Tank Williams; Aaron Brooks (who apparently only wore FNOB during the 2004 preseason); Ricky Williams (I believe also just a preseason thing, from 2001); Rudi Johnson; Jon Ogden (although this seems a bit suspect, since he usually went by Jonathan); and — here’s the pick of the litter — Clarence Weathers.
NHL: Rich Sutter (up until now, all I had for him was this).
Meanwhile, as we continue to compile FNOB examples, here’s something that showed up in yesterday’s comments: John Yarno of the USFL’s Denver Gold, whose NOB featured a first initial after the surname. Teammate/brother George Yarno (No. 66 in the photo) presumably had a similar nameplate, but I haven’t yet found a rear-view photo of that. Anyone..?

Meanwhile, if you look at the membership roster, you’ll see that many members’ uniform numbers are now shown in boldface type. That’s to distinguish the charter members (i.e., those who joined during the first two months of the membership program). I’ve been meaning to add this designation to the roster page for months now but have been too busy to do it. Fortunately, this is precisely the sort of stupefyingly tedious task important job that special Uni Watch assistant Nina Dubin was hired to do, and she’s working on it now even as we speak. As for today’s showcase card, it’s patterned after the UMich marching band. I think you’ll all agree that Scott kicked some serious ass on this one.

I don’t think that’s a double name plate on the Tennessee football uniform. I think it’s just the seam where the shoulder panel meets the back, and the nameplate is in the shoulder area.

Here are the UConn uni’s. With the undershirts it looks like an NFL team going monochromatic - basically looks terrible, despite the cool lines (which don’t match up on the jerseys and shorts, so they’re probably a cool idea but not great in practice).

The black strip on UNC’s jersey is for the Virginia Tech shooting. All ACC schools are wearing them this season, apparently in all sports. Each team is wearing them in a different place on their uni.

My personal preference whether or not to go with the FNOB route would be to have my last name only. I’m glad this subject is under a microscope here because I always noticed the player with FNOB and never liked the look of it. Does anybody know if the player is forced to wear FNOB? or is it personally chosen.. also, Aaron Brooks a victim?..et tu Ricky Williams? well, where are they now..sheesh-I would’ve never believed it if I hadn’t seen the evidence.

very plain but quite interesting and trailblazing for fort scott in the sense that we’ve never seen a mascot logo replace a word mark. the farthest we’ve gotten was when unc, michigan, nc a&t, and miami replace their wordmarks with thier letter logos. i actually like them.
i would have loved to see a marching ramses, or simply ramses head adorn the carolina uni this year as a tribute to jason ray. it would look simple and appropriate if it was either above or below the va tech band on the back of their jerseys.
so i guess members arthur ryel-lindsey and geoff zmyslowski are going into this weekend with similar attitudes.

I played football in that conference (MIAA). If the big boys wanted to, they could pretty much wipe out a big chunk of the athletic marks that are used.
Here is the MIAA page on the helmet project. I realize that the Princeton/Michigan isn’t trademarked. However, the Pitt State “Pitt” script, Tennessee’s “T” on Truman State, and the aforementioned Wisconsin “W” on Washburn leave a pretty big hole on the originality scale. Also, in the recent past, Missouri Southern used the Georgia/Green Bay style logo with an “S” in place of the “G” and Central Missouri used the “wishbone C”.

Just curious, but why is the NCAA ban still in place? When it was implemented, I understood that it was because Uni Watch did not want to open Pandora’s box with regard to card choices available to members.
With the passage of time, however, it seems that nearly any uniform (whether sports, band or otherwise), field or other interesting and noteworthy design may be approved for a membership card, so long as it does not relate to an NCAA team.
With so many different designs already having been approved, and with members frequently attempting to come up with an original and unique idea, whey does the need to ban NCAA designs persist?

One of the things that makes me wonder about some of this FNOB stuff is (where not noted) who was the player that forced the FNOB status?
For instance, Aaron Brooks and Clarence Weathers?
Also, why would teams go through all that trouble in the preseason? I guess it’s not that much trouble for an equip mgr, but still.
Lastly, we all know how the NFL is with uni issues but it doesn’t seem to have a single policy on this issue. Didn’t a previous post on this topic show that some teams don’t bother to put initials on at all?
(I always thought the Tank Johnson jersey was totally cool. I wanted one, I love the Titans jerseys anyway, especially that light blue)

I hope the link works since I’ve never posted one before. This is my favorite photoshopped card, the 2005 Topps Luke McCown. They didn’t even bother to fix his Cleveland Browns helmet striping and facemask. It makes his supposed Buccaneers helmet look wayyy off. Not to mention it probably doesn’t snow too much in sunny Tampa (yes, I know the Bucs usually wear their whites at home.)

Valid points, all — I agree with you. And about an hour ago I sent a note to Scott laying out pretty much this same line of thought, and suggesting that it’s time to lift the NCAA ban.
If Scott agrees (he’s the one who’ll actually have to execute the designs, so his consent is necessary), we’ll start allowing NCAA designs pronto. Stay tuned.

At last night’s (Thursday) Purdue vs. Bethune-Cookman basketball game, some of the Bethune-Cookman players’ jersey appered to have the spot where the nameplate should be. It was darker than the rest of the jersey. Some players did not have this discoloration. It looked as if the nameplate had been taken off or just been sewn over. I don’t know if the team switched from NOB to NNOB this season. I was not able to take any pictures but was just curious.

If I am not mistaken, Patrick Ewing was the first to wear a t-shirt under his uniform when he was at Georgetown. He wore it in practice to stay warm and got comfortable in the t-shirt so he started wearing it in games.

I noticed on NC Central’s Roster page that several players are listed with two uni numbers. I remember when Houston had all their players in even numbers at home and odd numbers on the road but NCC’s system is different.

My brother used to work at Washburn. The story he told me as that Washburn actually had the W first, but didn’t copyright/trademark it. Then Wisconsin started using it, got the copyright/trademark for themselves, and the rest is history.
Now maybe my brother has no clue what he’s talking about — wouldn’t be the first time…

Did anyone notice the Umpire in last nights Oregon-Arizona game? He was not properly equipped, he was lacking both an American flag on his left chest (over the pocket) and he was also missing the 8″ placard that should be on his back. There should have been a Black placard with a white “U”. Don’t know if anyone else noticed, but kind of bugged me being an official myself. Doe’s anybody have any info on why? My only quess would be that he has an alternate and the normal Umpire on the crew couldn’t work the game.

Barry Alvarez had the motion W designed when he took over the program. Reportedly, the design had a tail when pitched to him, which he had them remove.
Wisconsin started using the motion W in 1991. According to the Helmet Project, Washburn put their version on helmets five years later.
So I think this might be one of those times where your brother is wrong.

The Emporia State Decal was a “stinger” looking decal that started across the top of the face mask in the front and tapered to a point near the back of the helmet. It was pretty cool and, as far as I know, original. It really is too bad they abandoned it for the E’s.

another story on the cal-roth-throwbacks. as my wife and i were settling into our top row end zone strawberry canyon seats 2 hrs prior to the usc game last saturday, our row neighbor, 50 yrs old or so, like us, tapped me on the shoulder. said he was at a cal function the night before and mike white, former coach at cal and elsewhere, told him a secret. he pulled his raincoat back to show me a cal bears munci-roth-1975 era gorgeous blue number 12 jersey. he said white saw him wearing the jersey the night before in remembrance of the late joe roth, and told him, in confidence, they were wearing the entire uni, helmets as well, of that era for the game. awesome how uni’s remain an emotional thing on all of us fans forever.

The University of Houston numbering system was prevalent in most of the rural high school basketball teams I covered in Texas (the city teams rarely used this system). IIRC, the home team wore evens and the visitors were the odds. Thus, a referee calling a foul on No. 13 couldn’t be misinterpreted by the scorer’s table.
Players always wore corresponding numbers: 10/11, 12/13, 14/15… Elvin Hayes wore 44 at home and 45 on the road.
It’s much more likely that NC Central has ordered one set of new jerseys that do not correspond with the old numbers on certain jerseys.

I know I’ve seen that in preseason before in the NFL, because of different positions requiring certain numbers groups, and at that point in the year that player’s position hadn;t been established yet. Could be the same thing here. Maybe they’re trying them out in multiple positions. But I do realize the NCAA doesn’t enforce the uni numbering as strictly as the NFL of course.

I was watching the Spurs/Mavericks game last night and noticed that Manu Ginobli was wearing one sock low and one sock high. However, upon further inspection, it didn’t look like a sock, but rather, it looked like it was raised, like a soccer shinguard or something. Anybody know what this was?

i dont like powder blue as the basis for any baseball uni. its not versatile like gray and white are. thats how i can NOT like it.

That’s good news. The NCAA ban and purple ban are the 2 big reasons I’ve never joined. I can live with a purple ban in place since my undergraduate alma mater is red and gray.

Hey Dan King or Brian from short island, are you a Notre Dame grad? I’m just curious, I noticed a blip about ND and thought I’d see. I’m class of 2007.
And the Notre Dame band has been pretty creative. One of my favorites was the giant aircraft base formed, complete with a jet landing and smoke coming from the tail. The Mario was great, too.

Sweet Jebus, talk about a major downgrade! This is one that Plan B missed, and that’s rare. I would have kept the railroad theme intact. Bubblegum? What were they smoking? Or drinking? Or did they eat Aaron Sorkin’s mushrooms? They also should have stayed with the current “hand-me-down” package.

/best part about the uni is the “R Phils” alt & bp tops (were i still married, i know my wife would have bought that one for me)

In this weeks’ SI, there is a pic of Tank Johnson sacking Eli Manning. One of the offensive linemen is wearing the Ion Helmet. I thought this was supposed to be a preseason thing?
(PS- Tank is wearing 66 in Dallas. Poosibly a metaphor for turning his line around?)

Hey Thank you very much: from yesterday’s comments: when I visit this site on my home computer the November 6, 2007 page comes up, and even if I search today’s date it still brings me to Nov.06.07. Anybody have any idea why that would happen??

Yes I did..Last night I did a “test” comment to see if it would load to the most recent uni watch page, see for yourself the date on the last comment of 11.06.07 page. last comment. I posted a “test” comment and it is showing 11.14.07 date in which I posted the comment..I don’t know why it is not bringing me the most up to date page of Uni Watch. It only happens to this site too, everything else works fine..Maybe I’m mistakenly blocked from uni watch?
