Major typo in the English Premier League yesterday, as David Bentley of Blackburn played an entire match with “Betnley” on his back (plus it wasn’t exactly the most graceful arc). As Dan Winkler explains, “David Bentley is one of Blackburn’s best players. He’s been with them for a few years and, in fact, scored a hat trick against Man U a few years ago, so it’s not like he’s the soccer equivalent of a September call-up or was just acquired in a trade. That’s what makes this mistake especially odd.”
By coincidence, there’s another EPL typo of sorts unfolding these days. It involves West Ham’s John Paintsil. Reader Iain Landon explains:
When Paintsil signed with West Ham from the Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv, all of his documentation, including his UK travel paperwork and work permit, had his name as ‘Pantsil’ — note the missing ‘i.’ According to English FA regulations, the name on his shirt has to match his registration, so John Paintsil has become John Pantsil. He only has a handful of appearances for West Ham so far this season, so I haven’t been able to find a photo, but the details of the story are verified here and here.
Meanwhile, back on our side of the pond:
• The Chargers’ season-long streak of having at least one player without an American flag decal was kept intact, as Chris Chambers was flag-free for the third week in a row. LaDainian Tomlinson, however, was flag-clad for the second consecutive week.
• Speaking of the Chargers, someone needs to tell Antonio Cromartie that men don’t look good in sheer hose.
• And speaking of hosiery, Dwight Smith had some serious sock layers going on.
• Charles Woodson, who’s been pushing the uni-related envelope all season, really outdid himself yesterday. Was he wearing tzitzit or what?
• I remain opposed to this look for the Giants, but there were a few interesting details. As Joe Skiba had promised, the “ny” nose bumper logo, which is usually blue outlined in red, was red outlined in blue. And yeah, okay, I can deal with red gloves, red shoelaces, and red undersleeves, but red spats? Enough already. (That player, incidentally, was Kawika Mitchell, and the screen grab comes courtesy of Randy Williams.)
Uni Watch News Ticker: Where do college football uniforms go after they’ve been used? Often to Europe, as seen with this Mississippi State jersey being used by the London Olympians, and this Duke jersey worn by the Coventry Cassidy Jets (also note the personalized “MOM” memorial, all found by Stefan Schubert). … Tons of great historical baseball pics in the New York Public Library’s A.G. Spalding Collection (with thanks to John Ervin). … I’m trying to figure out how they’re going to screw this up. … Hannah Krug notes that the Princeton women’s hoops team has their logo in an interesting spot. “The worst part is that it doesn’t even look like a tiger,” she says. “I’m more reminded of a mole rat.” She also notes that Maryland’s jerseys have a normal back, but Marissa Coleman ties her up into a faux racer back. … The Kitchener Rangers wore special Remembrance Day jerseys on Sunday (with thanks to AJ Brandt). … And CFL teams wore poppy decals yesterday (with thanks to Tim Capper for the screen grab). … Not positive about this, but I think Miguel Cotto is the first fighter I’ve seen with a boxing glove depicted on his waistband (it’s on the back, too). … Cal wore really nice throwbacks (which are now being auctioned off) on Saturday. …Mild hilarity on Saturday night, as Trevor Fulkerson wrote to tell me that an Angels turn-ahead-the-clock jersey was up for auction on eBay. Exactly 21 minutes later, David Linder wrote to tell me that he was the winning (and, incredibly, only) bidder. … “I was browsing through a photo gallery of the 1930 World Cup and ran across this picture of the team from Bolivia,” writes Chuck Nolan Jr. “I assumed they were just wearing special shirts for the team portrait, but then I saw this photo , which would seem to confirm that they wore the shirts during the game.” … It’s amazing how Georgia’s black jersey (which I was fine with) really accentuated the black pants stripe, which up until now I’d barely even noticed. … Awesome socks being worn by Dorchester High in Boston (with thanks to Skott Daltonic). … Duke wore throwback jerseys and helmets on Saturday but ruined it by going monochromatic. … Sure didn’t take long for eye-black messages to go from this to this (that’s Mississippi State’s Eric Butler, as spotted by John Wilmoth). … Mark Graban found an interesting old pic of Donny Baseball with mismatched numerals on his helmet brim. Not only that, but look closer at it appears that the “3″ was applied over the “2.” … Jeremy Kaufman notes that Michigan State’s Mark Dell has “Focus” written on his wrist tape. … not a good idea. … The 49ers are already wearing a memorial helmet decal for Bill Walsh. Will they add another one tonight for former coach Dick Nolan, who died yesterday? … Fascinating note from Morris Levin, who writes: ” Topps just released its 2007 Update & Highlights set (it’s what used to be “Topps Traded”). Check out the cards for Francisco Rosario and Kyle Lohse. They must not have had game pics in Phillies jerseys because the uniforms are clearly airbrushed. Rosario is wearing his black Blue
Jays cleats, but more telling is the team wordmark on the front. The Topps art department placed a Phillies logo in there and neglected to remove the underline, which is part of the official logo but does not appear on the jerseys.”
Long-Overdue Thanks: About two months ago, after we changed web-hosting companies, I asked for volunteers to help fix all the non-ASCII characters that had gotten garbled during the server changeover. Six readers answered the call, which was great — and I failed to publicly acknowledge them until now, which is not so great. So for the record, I owe a big debt of gratitude to Chris Schoenthal, Chris Roberts, Mark McGinnis, Matt Edwards, Forrest Carpenter, and Kyle Joecken. Mea culpa for not thanking them until now.

A. he has been in poor health for some time now and i wouldnt be surprised if a decal was created and produced ahead of time.
B. since dick nolan has been the muse for coaches wearing suits (or at least for mike nolan anyway), wouldnt it be something to see the entire 49er coaching staff honor him by wearing suits tonight.

It was great to see someone actually noticed the whole airbrushing of the baseball cards other than me. I have never really stated it on here, however, as an avid collector of cards I’ve noticed that they do airbrush a lot. Usually if a player gets traded in the off season, they will air brush it. If it is close to the deadline of when the cards need to be printed, you may find the airbrushing along with the color accents on the card to be slightly off, usually representing their former team. It will be fun to see this upcoming season some of the big name stars have their jerseys airbrushed.

Those special Kitchener Ranger jersey’s are only used once and then auctioned off and the money given to the Legion here. Actually this year there were worn twice, the last home game before the 11th and then decided to wear them for the 11th when they played in Ottawa.
This is the 4th year of wearing the special jerseys. they have rasied over 50K.

Dont know if yesterday’s comments get this one, but the Chargers players had their uni numbers on the top on their chin strap straps, at least for players who were wearing the one that goes through the top of the facemask and is bolted into the sides of the forehead of the helmet. How does one pronounce “tzitzit” (zit-zit?)?
It is close (but not 100%) to the way you would pronounce the beginning of “tsetse fly.”
It starts with a Hebrew letter that has no equivalent in English, which is why it is usually transliterated as “tz.”

Aberdeen broke out the wasps versus Hearts on Sunday. Also, Hearts appeared to be wearing a kind of poppy patch. I was wondering how they were keeping them on the whole match. Hibs went the more tradtional route.
Nothing else of note with the limited schedule ahead of the Scotland/Italy Euro clash, though I still love both of these kits nearly as much as my own Gers.

Topps has been doing extremely poor photoshop jobs on players who change teams during the off-season. Alfonso Soriano’s card for this year has a block number font, an all-blue helmet (he’s wearing what’s supposed to be his road uni), and a red stripe (!) down the side of his pants.
#34 by Scott on 11.12.07 11:11 am |
I don’t have pictoral evidence, but I have noticed that on the Schutt Ion helmet, when the player uses the two-low strap hook up, it has a very weird effect. It looks like the first low buckle goes up through the facemask then back down to clip on. At first I thought it was just one players’ quirk, but I noticed watching the Illinois game that all players that used the low hook ups had the snap that way.
#35 by KT on 11.12.07 11:18 am |
Have the Chiefs been wearing that AFL patch all year? I can’t figure out what it’s for, unless it’s for 45 years in KC or something. Because this would be the 48th season for those original AFL teams.
Ah, it’s the Lamar Hunt tribute, I see. Never mind.
#36 by College Kid on 11.12.07 11:21 am |
That’s how the Ion helmet and facemasks were designed.
As a student equipment manager…I don’t see the point in NFL teams writing the player number on the chinstraps. I don’t know of any colleges that do it, and a player will usually go through at least 4 or 5 chinstraps in a season due to wear and tear anyway.

I thought Mike Nolan and Jack Del Rio were approved to SUIT UP! for two games each this year. This hasn’t happened yet right? And the NFL didn’t renege on this agreement?
Since Mike Nolan originally started the suit crusade in honor of his dad, I wonder if he’ll try to wear a suit for all remaining 49ers games. It’s just odd that the NFL would say “no you can’t dress nice, here, wear this sweatshirt.”
And I know marketing agreements, blah blah blah, but I bet Nolan ignores them and suits up for the rest of ‘07. I wish the Niners were good so we could see this in the playoffs.

#50 by David L on 11.12.07 12:14 pm |
A few things of note:
The chargers powder blue jerseys aren’t intended to be throwbacks. They’re simply powder blue versions of the new design. One of the key points of the new unis was to give the present team it’s own signature, while calling upon the teams uniform history(powder blue)
re: haphazardly applied American flag stickers.
The stickers don’t fit will with where the bolt goes on the back of the helmet. Depending on the helmet style, it either has to overlap a little, or be placed vertically. I’ve seen both done.

Nice catch on the Phillies cards. One of the pleasures of collecting sports cards as a kid in the ’70’s was examining and evaluating the quality of the hand painted, or air-brushed, logos and uniforms on the traded players’ cards. Sometimes the effort was so weak it was laughable…Yet, always charming and human. I felt like I, as a kid, could’ve done a better job.

While Winnipeg has reserved that gold jersey as their alternate jersey, there is a story behind it.
I’m almost certain they introduced those jerseys as a way to honour the first Bomber team that won a Grey Cup. I’m researching that now.
However, they are popular in terms of sales, and there were a ton of people who were wearing from what I could see on TV yesterday.

I’ve noticed the same thing with Topps cards recently. The 2007 Topps Randy Moss card looks horrible. It’s obvious it’s a photo that’s been airbrushed to make him wearing a Patriots uniform instead of a Raiders uni. The same thing goes for the Travis Taylor card. The photo is from him playing for the Vikings, but on the card he’s wearing a Raiders uni.

Vertically? Unless they have a different set of decals for that, it would mean displaying the flag incorrectly. When hung vertically, the blue field should be in the upper left corner.

Saturday I was pleased to see the Owls have gone back to those helmets and pants, but I SWEAR there was more to the uniforms of that era. UGA played the jersey switch out perfectly. You had to be there to truly take it in! In warm ups coach Richt pointed to the stands & all the black. When the captains came out in red we all were a little let down until we saw them in the tunnel going towards the entrance! Then the roar started where those of us could see in the tunnel it spread & reached a crescendo when the team burst through the banner! If that wasn’t enough the place went crazy again when they played Back In Black!
I’m surprised Paul didn’t comment on some of the different sock & tight combos the UGA players had on some of which I hadn’t see before. Of course they were black with some red on them. To tell you how far the ruse went most of the players had on there regular sock look in warm-ups (for instance Knowshoun Moreno with his black on top white on bottom look) but then were all black for the game. Anyway you can read a good account of how it was planned & went down here:

Maybe I am wrong, but it seems from the Flag regulations that they are not supposed to be used as either (1) wearing apparel (Sec. 8(d)) or (2) as an athletic uniform (Sec. 8(j)). I guess techically it is part of the helmet, but a helmet is part of the uniform and the players wear the uniform.

It should go away because IT WASN’T A BIG DEAL. I’m not going to go the “every coach did it” route because there is no way you can prove that. But, is there nothing to the way the Patriots are playing now that can prove that it didn’t give them that great of an edge? They were punished for it, pretty severely, unlike Barry Bonds, which is the biggest reason why this is NOTHING like the Bonds situation. This is still a topic for discussion because no one knows for sure whether he used steroids for a sustained period of time since he won’t admit anything. Belichick got caught and took his punishment.
People talk about the Black Sox scandal? Like who? Where are the Greg Easterbrook like people who are writing and analyzing the Black Sox scandal right now? How often does this come up? You want to compare something that happened in 1919 to something that happened in 2007 and has already been taken care of by the league?
Sure, it can still be a controversy, whatever. When the Patriots finish the season 19-0 with their 4th Super Bowl people will talk about this. That’s all fine. But why is it every time someone makes a remark about Bill Belichick some one comes out and makes a dumb ass joke about the “cheating?” if you are going to make a joke, at least make it funny, or original, or something that hasn’t been said a million times before.
And, by the way, Patriots fans don’t really care if this goes away or not. They don’t care if you hate their team, their coach, their quarterback, or anyone else. All they care about is that they are winning.

You go on a long rant there for someone that doesn’t care.

Not sure exactly how relevant this is, but it’s pretty funny. Today, AdultSwim.com posted a video of Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force discussing the Giants’ red jerseys. He makes some…interesting points.

That site is ridiculous…whether you support the flag or not, that seems like way too much trouble to go through…

“TO? With his to TD catches? No, I blame another TO. The word to. As in to many penalties, to much standing around, and them friggin’ throwback jerseys are to red… This goes back to ancient caveman times. Research has shown that the color red is associated with menstrual blood. Therefore, you’re seen as a woman, and not a worthy opponent.”
Christ… thank you, Eli. Thank you.
On another note, it kind of looks to me that the 2 on Mattingly’s helmet is placed over the 3, not the other way around. I know the 3 seems to bleed into that strip that has the 2 on it, but I think a more likely explanation is that the 2 is printed on a clear strip of tape, and the 3 is warped a bit by the layering on top of it. I might have just confused myself with that explanation. Basically, the 2 is applied on a clear strip of tape over the 3.

Well sure, any kid with a gold shirt and a roll of electrical tape can make his own, too.
