Hey, new guy — it’s called Saturday Open Thread.
I know, I know. But it’s time to break the mold, think outside the box, and play one game at a time. Something like that, anyway. So, at the dawn of this brave new era, I give you Gregory vs. Emory/Ethan in the South Dakota Class 9AA championship game. That’s nine-man football if you’re keeping track at home. And I’m happy to report that the Seahawks won, 33-14.
Have a good Saturday, folks. — Bryan

Yes, there is a dome in South Dakota — it’s in Vermillion and called the Dakota Dome. It’s the teflon bubble type, like the Metrodome. And the Dakota Dome was modeled after the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa, home of the University of Northern Iowa. I know too much about domes.
Thanks for the kudos, guys. Vince set the bar pretty high.

Northern Iowa-J Lawerence Walkup Skydome

I can’t find evidence of one FCS team playing a game in all four venues. Eastern Washington University has played in 3 of them, missing out on NDSU.
NDSU is ranked #1 in FCS but is not eligible for the playoffs because they are in their 5th year of provisional membership after their move from D-II

A few thoughts I want to share:
1. Georgia looks great in black.
2. Wisconsin’s helmets are hideous. I hate the motion W.
3. Army has some of the nicest uniforms in all of football.
4. Michigan’s road uniforms are much better than they were in the late 90’s/early 00’s, but they were much better in the early 90’s.
5. I like some of Oregon’s football uniform combinations… and I like the whole package just for its quirkiness.
6. Illinois should use the circular Chief Illiniwek logo instead of the ILLINOIS wordmark on its football helmets.
7. Michigan State should consider white helmets with a green logo instead of the opposite.

We’ve been talking about the UGA-In-Black at work today. What a strange site to see very little red amongst the masses. As far as I’m aware, the team was coy about whether or not they’d be in black (it was a fan-blackout) until they took the field. Worst kept secret, but a cool hype technique. I’d imagine that Sanford Stadium shook when the Dawgs came out.

UGA BLACKOUT UPDATE
According to my co-workers, UGA entered the stadium in their red jeserys and changed into their black jersey’s before taking the field for the game. How ’bout them sporting dramatics!
Also, the ploy worked as the Dawgs took the Tigers to task in the last half by scoring four unanswered touchdowns in a 45-20 blowout.
At this point, I think Mark Richt could ask for a Pink-Out next week and Sanford Stadium would oblige!

UGA has another must-win home game next week against a tough Kentucky team. Last year Kentucky beat UGA. I say the Dawgs need to wear black again next week.
One thing not mentioned here…after the team warmed up in red, the UGA captains came out for the toss in red. The the team ran out on the field in black, and the captains took off thier red jerseys to reveal black ones underneath…nice touch.
The Duke throwbacks would’ve been better with white pants.
#84 by TimInGA on 11.10.07 7:46 pm |
There was an interesting shot during CBS’s telecast of the game. It was of one of Georgia’s captains removing his red jersey on the field. The captains did the coin toss in the traditional red jersey and then removed it to reveal their black jersey’s underneath. Also, UGA the mascot was donning the black jersey too. This was the second time the mascot wore a black jersey, Vince Dooley’s retirement was the other.
Go Dawgs!!!!——-The looked AWESOME in black.
Maybe black jersey’s and red britches in the future?
#85 by DCM on 11.10.07 7:49 pm |
Methinks the UGA nose bumpers usually say DAWGS, by the way.
Illinois…I love the old helmets with ILLINI spelled out near the top.
Don’t like it when USC players wear the black shoes with lots of white trim, but UGA QB Matthew Stafford looked good in his. Good updates on the board about UGA players wearing white shoestrings when.
#86 by John in Athens on 11.10.07 7:50 pm |
From SI.com:
Richt spent most of the week dancing around the jersey issue, and the Bulldogs came out for warmups wearing their normal red home attire.
When the four captains walked out of the locker room still in red, there was a bit of a groan from the crowd. But it was all a ruse.
The rest of the team charged out through the main entrance wearing black jerseys, sending the 92,000 fans into a tizzy, the massive stadium rocking out to the AC/DC anthem ”Back in Black.”
If that isn’t a nominee for Uni Moment of the Year, I don’t know what is!

Check out the sox of the Iowa Class 2A champion Western Christian Wolfpack.
Ah, crap, our photo archive here at the Gazette won’t let me do it.
Let me describe. They have a pack of wolves on the front of them. Pretty cool.

To tie it all together. Northern Michigan plays in the wood dome up on the pinnisula. They play in Division II and the GLIAC and that is the same conference that Grand Valley (home of the Pink out) and home of about 4 of the last 6 National Championships. Also the link of the pink out…..they are playing Northern Michigan in the Yellow and green!

I gotta buy me one of those… I refuse to buy retro sweaters unless they are actually worn in a present day game. I love the white sabres, but then the powder blue pens is just too cool. I’m torn.

richt said on WSB that him and the seniors decided this past summer to wear black for the auburn game (or at least one of the games), but they were sworn to secrecy =-o haha

Not so fast my friend! Sorry, I like Corso…
At any rate, this is a pic of the dome from the USD website. Lots of steel, not too much teflon from what I see.

Never mind my Corso moment. Post 68 beat me to it.

Back when I visted USD on a college visit, both the UNI-Dome and the Dakota Dome were teflon. All this shows is that I’m old. Sorry about the dome mixup. Oh, and the UNI-Dome’s new lid proved way too heavy for the concrete bowl. They had to add concrete and steel reinforcing bands around the upper edge to prevent cracking. Yikes.

I like the block C. Not exactly negative space in there, but it kind of looks like two C’s.

Oh what a day! Being a huge Georgia fan & an avid uni watcher it all came together today. UGA played this to the hilt. First with Richt calling for the blackout then being coy about the black jerseys all week then it carried over into the warm-ups. The players were dressed as they usually have been all season. For example Knowshon Moreno had on his white on top black on bottom socks & even Harry (the mascot dawg not UGA) had on his normal red jersey! At the end of warm-ups I read Richt’s lips telling the player to look in the stands at all the black. Just before the game started the captains came out in red which is usually when the rest of the tram comes out but today the team took forever to come out. The banner the players run through was closer to the tunnel than normal. Then we caught a glimpse on them rounding the corner in the tunnel & the roar started on the South side. When they burst through the banner the crowd went NUTS! The team was hyped out of there minds so those jerseys were worth all 45 points today! They looked GREAT! Most of us in the stands were saying we want to see this as a new tradition but only for BIG games ala what Notre Dame & the green jerseys. However they look so good & really display all the school colors (Make silver an official color already!) perfectly that I wouldn’t mind seeing that look a lot.

Indiana plans to wear throwbacks next Saturday to commemorate its last appearance in the Rose Bowl. Here’s the brief note mentioning the uni plans. I did a quick Web search for photos from that season but couldn’t find anything. All I know for sure is we’ll see the return on the block I.

I’m going to guess that they’ll do the same “throwback” they did two years ago and stick the block “I” on the helmet. Other than a few differences in lettering and a color switch from red to crimson, i don’t think there is much difference between then and now. Hopefully, the team will make an attempt to look like that 1967 team in their play as well as with their unis…

Speaking of old.. it looks like all these lower-level domes still use old school Astroturf. That can’t be good for recruiting these days.

John in Athens, that would be cool for you, but since I live in MN, that would be quite a jaunt for me.
u2horn, I have to agree that it made me uneasy to see the blackface as well. Even though Stevo is right in his assessment (the added black-arms, red wigs, etc.), it still speaks to the power of images that I felt a flash of uncomfortableness every time the black-painted fans were shown.
That said, the blackout has been my favorite moment of the college season thus far, with the ‘Scarlet’ Knights dressed in all black a close second.

Hey, I actually played for emery-ethan in that game. I was an all-state center. The reason they are called the seawhawks is because they had a co-op with Spencer, Emery and Ethan. They used to spell it SEEhawks. when Spencer dropped out they just kept the name so they didnt have to buy new jerseys and equipment
