As you know, I’ve been trying to compile a list of teams with unique messages printed on their nose bumpers. That project is still ongoing (contributions still welcome), but along the way it’s yielded an interesting anomaly, thanks to the research efforts of reader Daniel Weimann.

Weimann was looking through photos of Division III teams (a smart move, since I suspect the best nose bumper material will be lurking amidst the D2, D3, and high school ranks) when he came upon Saint John’s, a D3 school in Minnesota. There’s nothing particularly unusual about the school’s nose bumper — it just reads, “Saint John’s.” The unusual thing is right above the bumper, where each player is wearing his name.

I’ve never seen anything like this, unless you count the tape stripes that many NFL teams use during training camp. It looks reaaaaaallly Mickey Mouse, especially on the Johnnies’ white road uni, where the combination of the name decal and the solid-white uni creates the unmistakable impression of a Wednesday-afternoon practice session. The luckiest guy on the team is clearly the fella in the middle of this photo, because his name is short enough to be relatively inconspicuous (especially compared to his lengthily surnamed teammate in the foreground).

Even more curiously, Saint John’s doesn’t use player names on its jerseys, either at home or on the road. So the helmet decals are the players’ only name-based identification. Do they use first initials for same-surnamed players? Have they ever had to use compressed typography for really long names? And it must be discouraging to see your family name get all scuffed and scratched and nicked, no? And most importantly, if you insist on putting names on the helmet, why not put them on the back? If anyone knows the story behind this, please fill us in.

If you want to see more pics, there’s a good collection of photo galleries here. Meanwhile, as an aside, we can add the Saint John’s logo to our list of creative uses of negative space.

Update: Shortly after today’s entry went up, Vince reminded me that Jeannette High School in Pennsylvania also puts player names on the front of the helmet, although they use smaller script lettering, as seen here, here, and here.

Intern Alert: In case you missed it yesterday, I’m in the market for a new intern. For details, scroll down to the “Help Wanted” section of yesterday’s post.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Page 2 has a big “Innovations” package running today, and I contributed a piece about bullpen car(t)s (not sure what time it’s being posted — certainly by early afternoon, maybe much sooner). My thanks to all of you who contributed info on this topic over the past week. … Notre Dame will wear green throwback jerseys and gold pants this Saturday, in honor of the 1977 championship team. The effect will presumably be something like this. … Nebraska is abandoning its ritual of having defensive starters wear black shirts during practice. Details here. … Excellent story here on the history of football helmet industry — highly recommended (with thanks to Richard Craig). … More good volleyball socks here (with thanks to Eric Martin). … According to an item on this page, Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard had two more jerseys tear on him Sunday night (with thanks to Jeff Barak). … I know some of you think I go on a bit much about logo creep, but come on (thanks, Vince). … Someone whose name I’ve misplaced (sorry about that) sent me this baseball card, which shows quite a gap between the number and the nameplate. … When the Rockies wear their black vests in the World Series (which will probably be every game, since neither the Indians nor the Red Sox have a black jersey), they’ll apparently wear the WS logo patch on their chests, not on their undershirt sleeves. … I might make an exception to my purple rule for the Cornell Rams of Cornell College, Iowa (with thanks to Noel Blaha). … We all know the Browns wear an “AL” memorial patch for Al Lerner. But David VanSlyke has noticed a detail I’ve never been aware of: “For game-issued jerseys from 2006 (not sure about other seasons), the ‘AL’ has an ever-so subtle script ‘E,’ which I believe stands for Edward — as in Alfred Edward Lerner.” … NSFW alert: I’ll be attending a sports-themed burlesque show on Friday night. Looks like they’ll be making some creative uses of uniforms. … Major find here: I’d occasionally heard that Deacon Jones had worn just his first name on his jersey while playing for the Chargers, but I’d never seen visual evidence of it — until now (big kudos to Gyula Nemeth). … Central and South American teams often use ads instead of nameplates. But Jean Oliva reports that the Cibao Giants of the Dominican Winter League have taken a different approach: They’re using ads instead of uni numbers. Numbers appear only on the front of the jersey (sorry, no photo of that).

Most of the links in the ticker are dead to me

They just have extra information before and after the URL that needs to be deleted.

Those St. J’s uni’s do look really bush league

The head coach at St John’s is John Gagliardi. He is college football’s all time winningest coach with over 450 wins. He also has 4 National Championships and 25 MIAC titles in over 50 years of coaching there. St. John’s always has over 100 players on it’s team so I think the player names may be there so the 80 year old Gagliardi knows who the players are. Interestingly, his teams never hit or tackle during practice. They save it all for game day. The campus sits pretty much in the middle of the countryside. It’s a beautiful setting for college football. This guy is very funny and self depreciating. A book could be filled with hilarious quotes from him.

Is it just me, or since Paul set a self deadline of like 10am for posting have the artices been showing up earlier than before? Way to go Paul!

Most of the ticket links failed for me too….

Ahhh, yeah, what he said. Most of the links are saying not found.

Glitchy.

Those helmets look pretty bad, man. Of course, I’ve never really liked the Mets wearing names on their helmets either.

Hey everyone. I fixed all the coding for the links in the Ticker. Good news, they work now. Enjoy.

“I’ve never seen anything like this, unless you count the tape stripes that many NFL teams use during training camp.”

I’m sure it was a slight oversight by Paul, but Jeannette High School in PA also uses names above the nose bumper, except they are script.

I don’t have any pics, but I visited St. John’s when looking for a college to go to, and if I remember correctly the football stadium is literally in the middle of the campus. The school revolves around football, and from what I remember, they are usually very good.

For some reason, that looks better to me than the St. John’s version.

Here’s hoping that the kid in those photos does the decent thing and picks West Virginia, because I have nightmares of duel-threat Ohio State quarterbacks, and probably will until Troy Smith retires from the NFL.

I live about 20 minutes from Jeannette, and played them when I was in High School. VERY good HS football team…and yeah they use the names. (why didn’t I remember that?) It made it easy to taunt them…

As for the Browns patch I can’t see the E…maybe i’m looking in the wrong place.

In regards to the St. Johns helmets, Coach Gagliardi (who is borderline senile) has openly admitted he does NOT know his own players names in the newspaper. He is merely a figurehead for the program but his “coaching” consists of standing on the sidelines and making asinine comments to the media about how funny/old he is. This is my best guess for the helmet names.

The head coach at St John’s is John Gagliardi. … A book could be filled with hilarious quotes from him.

Like Austin Murphy’s “A Sweet Season” or “No-How Coaching” by Gags and some co-writer.

They don’t cut anyone up there, ever, never have. And those sanctimonious pricks beat up on everyone in the MIAC.

He also, if I recall, has a winning career record as a hockey coach as well.

I actually dont mind the St Johns uniforms at all. Classic in their simplicity. St Johns in a DIII powerhouse and their coach is a legend. Sports Illustrated writer, Austin Murphy, wrote an excellent book about this program after spending a year on campus. It is a great book about football but also about life. Very funny, insightful etc. The book is call The Sweet Season

I played at Cornell in the early 90s and our unis were not that cool - in fact, the home unis were purple pants jerseys & helmets - and we never wore those cool sox…. As a former player, I applaud the changes (although their record these days is not good)

South Carolina’s Jonathan Williams and Mike Davis have the first two letters of their first name on their nameplates because there are other players on the roster with first names starting with the same first letter and same last name. First time I noticed Mike Davis’ though I thought it looked odd.

Nebraska is abandoning its ritual of having defensive starters wear black shirts during practice. Details here.

Not abandoning. It is more like the players are punishing themselves for sucking, and they will bring the black practice jerseys back as soon as they get their collective act together.

“When things get cleaned up, we can put them back on,” he said. “Until then, we might as well wear the reds.”

This is from the year when A&M won its only national championship, but why is the uniform different from these photos?
Something fishy going on here.

Here is hoping ND also break out the socks seen in the Montana picture.

I hope Pryor ends up at Penn State, but I’m doubtful. He recently got into a little trouble at an amusement park in Pittsburgh:

From the website of the San Diego Chargers:

For Thursday’s practice, all Chargers players will be wearing either their college or high school jerseys. The idea was initiated by Rivers, who simply wanted to guys to have some fun and celebrate where they come from.

I wonder which dominican winter league team will be sponsored by these guys

Burlesque shows are the best! I bet a sports themed one will be a blast, I’d say throw us some pics but all the ones I’ve ever been to don’t allow cameras.

That’s nothing. I highly doubt JoePa would object to a kid like that. Sounds like a dubious charge at best.

Either way, it’s not like Penn State has the same high standards of past years. Much like my squad, Michigan, there has seemed to be an increase in the number of incidences of trouble at Penn State in the past few years.

I think the troubling thing in both cases is that both teams have coaches who should probably be on the way out, and it seems like they’re losing control of an area they always had locked down.

Here’s hoping that the kid in those photos does the decent thing and picks West Virginia, because I have nightmares of duel-threat Ohio State quarterbacks, and probably will until Troy Smith retires from the NFL.

That kid (Tyrelle Pryor) is looking to play football AND basketball at a major D-1 school. Following in the footsteps of Julius Peppers and the guy from Florida that plays both (can’t remember his name)

I’ve gotten tentative permission to take photos. They’re very amused by the notion that they might end up on a site devoted to sports uniforms.

no link but the monterrey sultanes of the mexican league have a coca-cola ad where the team name should be. I think they have a smaller team logo ala soccer jerseys. can anyone find a pic?

Pryor is going to Ohio State unless something very strange happens. A summary offense at Kennywood isn’t scaring anybody off.

With respect to the off the field stuff, shit happens, and it tends to come in bunches. It’s how you deal with adversity that defines you, not whether you face it. Obviously the coaches can’t control what players do 24 hours a day, they can only discipline after the fact.

Penn State has had some issues off the field this year, some blown out of proportion (the fight over the summer), some silly (four players charged with underage drinking, which is about as worrisome to me as a rainy day) and one serious (Austin Scott). In all cases I think the punishment Paterno has handed out has fit the crime. Keep in mind he’s a football coach, a Criminal Court Judge.

Burlesque AND an upskirt on the same day!

I was beat to the explination of the St. John’s team. Great book too as I just read The Sweet Season. St. john’s is a football school, but the school being in Minnesota, they’ve got quite the hockey team too coached by 1980 gold medalist John Harrington. You might remember him from the cone head line. I myself and a proud alumnus of the MIAC and faced St. John’s several times in hockey and had some of my best games at their arena.

I love the MIAC nicknames:

Even better, they are technically the Gustavus Adolphus GOLDEN Gusties.

And this is a great chance to give a shout out to my home town which has D-III school University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, who are the Pointers (as in the hunting dog, but in athletics they refer to themselves always as “Dawgs”)

I went to Gustavus and I do admit most of the nicknames are very unoriginal along with the mascots that follow (most using some sort of lion or for St Thomas-a wildcat). As far as St. John’s and Gagliardi-a very classless team and as Ryan said, “a figurehead for the program” who does very little other than just stand on the sidelines. Plus, they don’t need to hit in practice anyways-its an all men’s school.

“a sports-themed burlesque show”? Was only a matter of time.

In England, they have this tradition that seems very strange to American eyes - photos of topless models stripping out of soccer jerseys. Obviously approved by the teams, and they must make some money off them.

Somebody tell Steinbrenner - there’s a market he hasn’t yet tapped….

Well, it’s all sold out.

Thanks for telling us a little late, Lukas!

What do you think A-Rod was doing that night in Toronto? Scouting for the company, I bet!

I know it’s not really negative space (and maybe it was mentioned already since I’ve been out of the coutnry for a while and without internet access), but the tour de france logo has a hidden bike rider in it. The “o” in “tour” is the back wheel, the “u” is the seat, the “r is the person riding and the front fork, and the front tire is the yellow sun-thing.

here’s the tour de france logo

Another example of a huge gap between nameplate and numbers - 1988-89 Winnipeg Jets jerseys:

http://www.gameworna...

The Nebraska defense temporarily dispensing with the Black Shirts seems to be similar to schools that take the helmet decals off the helmets whenever the team starts to tank (Colorado and Fresno State immediately come to mind).

Second, if Notre Dame really wanted to have a throwback experience on Saturday, they could (1) roll a Trojan Horse onto the field, like they did in ‘77, and (2) get Keith Jackson to call the game for NBC, much like he did the original Green Jersey Game for ABC. Jackson would be much better than that blathering idiot they have now.

I wonder if ND will wear yellow pants (to match the jersey numbers) or gold pants (to match the helmets)

I’ll be sure to get some pictures. Go Irish!

Burlesque AND an upskirt on the same day!

And of course, it happens only when I am reading uni-watch in a public computer lab at my university!

I have to disagree about the St. John’s helmets. The entire uniform is classic and who cares if they have their last names on the front of the helmet?

Oh no!!! A team is unique and is doing its own thing!!! Call the Uni Police!!!

And the part about how it is discouraging to see your family’s name scratched is a bit rediculous. How ’bout all the players that this website has documented having their name plate being half ripped off or completely misspelled?

Just my opinion though. Heaven forbid I go against the czar of uniforms.

I don’t want to pick on anyone, but the only time I’ve hear bad things about gags is from opposing football players who are unhappy that gags runs up the score after putting in his reserves. As a coach myself I have mixed feelings. I don’t like to tell the players to let up as that goes against the grain of what I teach them, but at the same time, if the reserves are doing their best and still whooping butt, maybe the problem isn’t the winning team’s class, but the lack of talent on the other side of the field.

To pick on St. John’s for being an all guys school iiisn’t fair as St. ben’s is right next door and they have co-ed classes. It’s more of a technicality so the two school can still exists without one having to lose its idenity.

Here are pictures of UWSP’s road hockey jersey from their back-to-back-to-back DIII championships in the early 90s. I picked this gamer of goalie Todd Chin off of Ebay a couple years ago. UWSP also had a standout forward, Shawn Wheeler, who played several years here in Charlotte. I got to know the old coach over emails, very nice people up there.

Hey everyone. I fixed all the coding for the links in the Ticker. Good news, they work now. Enjoy.

thanks ya d-bag

Since there is apparently another “Kerry” on here now, I will henceforth be identifying myself as “Kerry P” in all of my comments.

Check out this old school pic of Hancock Central High School (Michigan) from 1904. And I don’t know if its the color, but it seems to me that there is an African American player in the middle. For 1904 that seems pretty rare.

I would tell the Boss–but he’s having his tapioca and has left instructions not to be bothered.

Maybe it’s me, but the numbers on those Cornell uniforms look blue, or at least a bluer shade of purple than the rest of it.

Even the teams who have proper mascots get the MIAC nicknames. Carleton College is the Knights, but the students are known as Carls.

Just noticed the other day that the USA Network logo uses negative space.

USA Network

The 2007 St. John’s roster has 178 players.

3 numbers not used.
19 numbers have only 1 “occupant.”
72 numbers are doubled.
5 numbers are tripled.

With all of those duplicates, I have to assume that the numbers on the front of the helmet are for photogs and radio personnel (with binocs, obviously) to get a quick ID on the player. Otherwise, they’d have absolutely no chance.

And as for Jeannette, how long before Kansas goes all Wisconsin on them about their logo?

Those interested in D3 sports should check out and .
Good stuff.

Well, that didn’t work… whatever. D3football.com and D3hoops.com is what I was trying to post.

Has anyone heard anything about new Florida basketball jerseys?
Mareese Speight’s facebook picture is this
and they look like new jerseys but they could just be practice ones…anyone know?

And as for Jeannette, how long before Kansas goes all Wisconsin on them about their logo?

Man, if every D-I school did that, almost none of the local high schools would have logos. I can think of one offhand that still uses the Wisconsin logo (unless they recently changed it).

The high school with the name plates looks like they use the Jayhawk as a logo. Pretty rare considering Kansas is the only school I know using the Jayhawk.

Urbandale (Iowa) HS is the J-Hawks. For a long time, they used the KU logo with a “U” on the chest instead of “KU”. Kansas made them change it, and now they have a different-looking character. Recently, however, they started using a Miami Hurricane-esque “U” as a secondary logo/helmet decal.

Urbandale’s two marks

I was listening to an interview with Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward this morning, and they were asking him about his goal face mask designs. Apparently he is switching to new ones this year that are more North Carolina themed.

These will include a Blackbeard/pirate design, and a few others that I can’t remember. He claims he got the idea from a previous local goalie mask he saw that had a lighthouse-based design (for those who don’t know, the lighthouse is a major state symbol down here.

What I’m wondering is what other goalie mask in the area was prominent enough to have inspired him? They’re the only pro team in the area as far as I know.

Burlesque AND an upskirt on the same day!

And of course, it happens only when I am reading uni-watch in a public computer lab at my university!

Yeah, like that is the worst thing that is viewed on those computers!

I’m a St. John’s grad. And I can confirm most of the comments already made. The team doesn’t cut people, so the numbers can get pretty high. If my memory is correct only the guys that actually play get their names on their helmets. So for home games depending on the year they have between 150-200 players in uniform and when guys have uniforms and helmets on there aren’t a lot of distinguishing characteristics (especially remembering that this is a small central MN D3 school).

And yeah they are ranked in the top 5 in D3 just about every year.

I might make an exception to my purple rule for the Cornell Rams of Cornell College, Iowa (with thanks to Noel Blaha)

Shaeff:
in the early 90s and our unis were not that cool - in fact, the home unis were purple pants jerseys & helmets

I’m Cornell College Class of ‘02!

When I was there the uniforms were awful. I don’t mind purple as much as Paul, but these were solid head-to-toe purple with white numbers and helmet horns - no sleeve stripes, nothing. The road whites were passable, but at home… *shudder*.

This is just awful! What the hell is up with England, between the numbers and the underarm print…. just terrible jerseys.

http://soccernet-aka...

It also looks like there are a few different uni manufacturers for St. Johns too. Some have the New Balance logo printed on the jerseys and pants, others with a NB patch sewn on both. If you look close you can see it happens on both the home and away jerseys. Maybe a player gets one uniform set while they’re there with no cuts being made, and whoever is the manufacturer year to year a patch is just put in that place to make it match? Just an idea.

As somebody who takes football photos for my newspaper, I would dearly love to see the name on the helmet become mandatory.

I’ve wondered this for quite a while, do those thin arm thingies serve any functional purpose? http://farm2.static....

IMO- Love the Div 3 football uniforms. Clean, non cluttered and all about the number, color and let the name just be provided on the front of the helmet. Awesome.

See Penn State for a Div 1 sample of why less is more.

My son told me it keeps the player’s elbow from bending back too far. I don’t know if it’s true, but that’s what I heard.

Hate to go against the grain here but I LOVE those St.Joe’s helmets with their names on the front. Just a classic, clean uni, and I am one who likes to see a little differnce and adventure in uniforms that still are based on a classic look

I’ve wondered this for quite a while, do those thin arm thingies serve any functional purpose? http://farm2.static....

No, they’re just wristbands that the players cut even thinner. They serve no purpose, other than to make a player think he looks cool.

It’s funny the way fashion is cyclical when it comes to something as irrelevant as wristbands. Back in the late 90s, having the long ones (the size of QB wristbands) was the style. Then the smaller ones became cool again, and now players are trying to get them as small as possible.

?? They stretch that much to get that high on the arm??

Seems to be a lot of hatred for St. John’s. There’s a certain faction of sports fans who always seem to be threatened by coaches who win without acting like Nazis or Vince Lombardi. Do you guys have any excuses for the non-senile coaches who lose?

This is why I miss Bum Phillips.

Speaking of negative space the University of North Florida used to have an awesome negative space logo.

Actually, I’m not sure that is the case. But this is also just a guess, so I’m probably wrong. I always assumed that they put pressure on the tendon which then takes pressure off the joint as a whole. Reason I say this is that I’ve had two knee surgeries and have been told to wear a strap below the knee to put pressure on the patella tendon. This then stabilizes the joint. I’ve tried this, and I think it does help and work. Anyway, I always just assumed the elbow bands served the same purpose.

“It took me a while to see what this was. Because of the new helmets the riders use (that look like alien heads) I thought that the “U” in Tour was the rider’s head”

Me too, but then it looked like there was a turd flying out of the rider’s butt.

I’m sorry, but these World Series logo patches look totally lame, no matter where they’re placed.

Adam, yes, the Head to Toe purple was terrible…

Paul, nice work on the bullpen cart story. Some funny stuff there. Although the blog you linked to hasn’t been updated since 2005!

Also, players use the little ones because they are tighter and make their biceps bulge a little more. They are way too flimsy to work like knee straps…

It might not be a last name on a uniform, but Pleasantville High School (NJ) puts the school abbreviation on the front of the helmet, as seen in the photographs here. It’s on a white border on a maroon helmet, with a greyhound on either side of the helmet. Not sure why they are the Greyhounds, though I’m pretty sure that it’s NOT because the Greyhound bus terminal for Atlantic City is actually in Pleasantville.

Gabe, the only lighthouses on masks that I can remember were compliments of the Islanders organization. Tommy Salo’s Fisherman mask had the lighthouse on the sides. Roberto Luongo had an obscure lighthouse on the side of his Isles’ mask.

As for “local” to Carolina? I can’t think of any goalies of the Hurricanes who have worn a lighthouse as an NHL goalie.

I know alot of people will wear them extra tight or even wear rubber bands on their arms to cut off the blood and make their veins stand out more. AKA look like fools.

Wait, I lied. Tom Barrasso wore one on both sides! I guess I forgot about his short stint in Carolina.

Speaking of negative space the University of North Florida used to have an awesome negative space logo.

Make that a burlesque show, an upskirt, and a penis logo all in one day.

To continue quoting myself, Tom Barrasso is Cam Ward’s golaie coach in Carolina. Maybe he had something to do with Ward’s decision?

I’m sure it was a slight oversight by Paul, but Jeannette High School in PA also uses names above the nose bumper, except they are script.

HMMM. Terrelle Pryor. Doing some recruiting research for Ohio State, Vince?

I hope Pryor ends up at Penn State, but I’m doubtful.

He recently got into a little trouble at an amusement park in Pittsburgh:

That’s nothing. I highly doubt JoePa would object to a kid like that. Sounds like a dubious charge at best.

Either way, it’s not like Penn State has the same high standards of past years. Much like my squad, Michigan, there has seemed to be an increase in the number of incidences of trouble at Penn State in the past few years.

I think the troubling thing in both cases is that both teams have coaches who should probably be on the way out, and it seems like they’re losing control of an area they always had locked down.

Maybe Pitt will get him!! (Sorry…I had to laugh today…this was the best way!)

Damn, I just had a post eaten that I spent like 10 minutes researching about Cape Hatteras and Sean Burke. If that could be recovered that would be great.

its nice except it shows the southern end of florida

Ok, this should just be my personal thread. I’ve fixed the 404 links above for Salo and Luongo by linking to a different page. You can find Salo here, and Luongo here.

Ron Hextall wore a lighthouse as an Islander. Tommy Salo wore another lighthouse design. Eric Fichaud didn’t disappoint as well.

Clearly, though, lighthouses have played a big role in mask designs for the Isles and, to a lesser degree, the Hurricanes.

The tiny “sweatbands” are not cut by the players to be that small. Nike sells them in packs of 2, and each is about .5″ wide. They are flimsy and are more for show than anything. They aren’t stable enough to provide the support that knee bands do. In our equipment room, players can choose from the small, normal (2″) or large (i believe they’re 4″) wristbands for games. Most go for the small and put them just above the elbow or bicep.

Maybe there’s a track with an electronic bunny somewhere close by.

Another college that uses negative space is my hometown school, Youngstown State.

Well, that didn’t work… whatever. D3football.com and D3hoops.com is what I was trying to post.

D3hoops.com and D3football.com are the brainchildren of Pat Coleman, a native Minnesotan and himself a graduate of a D3 venue (Catholic University). They provide excellent coverage of these sports, along with D3 baseball, lacrosse, and soccer. Take a look at them ….

They might, if he breaks his leg, flunks all his classes, gets sent to prep school for a year and a half and Penn State has three other quarterbacks that he couldn’t beat out to get on the field right away. Anything’s possible.

i am also not seeing the browns “e” on the patch…someone tag it for me.

Those skinny “wristbands” are just for show — a lot of NFL players have used them and of course that just trickles down to college and HS. I’m pretty sure they don’t serve much functional purpose; I’ve also seen them worn under the knee (not to be confused with the patella tendon strap, which is a legitimate orthopedic device).

Deion Sanders used to wear a head band around his neck (presumably to show off another Nike logo); I’m surprised this never caught on…

They give you great power.
