As a fan, you might wear a ballcap when you go out to watch your favorite team. But for reasons of logic and convenience, you only bring one hat to the game — right?
Well, there is one man who fails to see that logic, and who appears to be undaunted by inconvenience. As pointed out in the comments section a couple of days ago, it looks like there’s a guy who sits in the first row at Jacobs Field and seems to change his hat during every inning of every Indians game. That would be Tom O’Toole, a 40-year season ticket holder who sits in perfect view of the camera every time there’s a close-up shot of a left-handed batter.
O’Toole began his headgear ritual in 1994, when the Indians moved from old Municipal Stadium to the new ballpark. He figured that he was on camera so much that he might as well have fun with it, neon-style. So he came up with the routine of changing his cap after each inning, meaning that he wears nine different lids during every game. Same rotation of colors, same innings, every single time. They even have a sticker on the underbrim denoting their designated times.
There’s a fantastic article on O’Toole and his bizarre and endearing hat routine in here, including the following highlights: He goes back to the first inning hat if the game goes extra innings; he only wears hats at the game, never anywhere else; he only makes it to about 20 games a year; and his wife has to wear the designated hat if he leaves his seat for any reason. The last one has led some random strangers around town to off-handedly mention, “Tom went to the bathroom in the sixth inning because Joanne was wearing the hat.”
For all the great info in that article, one important thing is left out — or, to be specific, nine things. They don’t go through the montage of hats, which is sad, because it is quite the colorful explosion of color that can only be truly appreciated all together in one place. Here’s the sequence:
- 1st inning hat: dull yellow.
- 2nd inning hat: hot pink.
- 3rd inning hat: neon yellow.
- 4th inning hat: neon green.
- 5th inning hat: neon orange, with wife, Joanne wearing it (is your girlfriend/wife cool enough to do this?).
- 6th inning hat: bright orange-ish red.
- 7th inning hat: yellow hat, red brim.
- 8th inning hat: red.
- 9th inning hat: blue.
Now that is fan dedication, in one of its strangest and most Uni Watch-ish forms. Although we might quibble with some of his color choices, Tom O’Toole’s obsessive dedication to uni-related ritual makes it clear that he definitely Gets It™. And if you’re ever watching an Indians game and you’re not sure what inning it is, refer to our handy guide and check for the man with the neon hat in the first row.
And now over to Paul with the rest of today’s news and info.

Research Project: I’m trying to piece together a timeline of bullpen cars and carts. When did they first appear? When and why did they fall out of favor? Which teams had particularly interesting or innovative vehicles or gimmicks? Which pitchers refused to use them? (Mike Marshall comes to mind.) Any other good stories?
If you’ve got any info on this front, please send it here.

ALL MEMBERS, PLEASE READ: I’m making good progress on restoring the missing names from the membership roster, but we’re not there yet. In case you’ve missed my pleas the past two days: A softwear glitch wiped about 90 names off the roster listing, and I need your help to get things back to normal. All members who haven’t already done so should please check the roster listing. If you don’t see your name there, please e-mail me your name, membership uni number, membership level, and why you chose your number. If your name linked to a photo, please re-send it. And if you’d like to help speed up the process a bit more, pick out your card from the design gallery and send me its URL. Big thanks for everyone’s help.
And if you’re wondering about the design of today’s showcase card, it’s based on the back of the Ohio State marching band uniform.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Good breakdown here of Arizona high school football helmets. … This isn’t me, I swear (good find by Todd Davis). … Speaking of the Rockies, good article here about their W-L record in all their various uni combinations. … Latest Euro-styled NBA teams: the Grizzlies and Raptors, who both played games in Madrid yesterday and wore the colors of the Spanish national flag. … Iowa has a new basketball coach who wants to add player names to the backs of the jerseys, but a new name-free uni set was ordered before he was hired and the numbers are positioned too high to allow for names. Details here (with thanks to Cork Gaines). … Is Colorado wearing reflective-outlined numbers or what? … Wake Forest wore a “Skip” patch last night, in memory of former hoops coach Skip Prosser. … Speaking of Wake, most of the team’s players go bare-legged. But as Zach Smith notes, several players appeared to be wearing striped leggings (additional shots here and here), similar to what Kobe Bryant was wearing a while back. … Latest college basketball team to go with the System of Dreck: UNC (with thanks to Jordan Woodson). … Carey Price’s white mask has now been painted (with thanks to Casey Barcomb and Dave Frolick). … “I was at the Pitt/Navy game the other night at Heinz Field here in Pittsburgh,” writes Doug Keklak. “They have a Steelers Hall of Fame exhibit on loan from Canton — I think it’s something they put together for the team’s 75th anniversary. I snapped some quick photos and put them into this album.” … You knew Chad Johnson was Ocho Cinco. But did you know Jonathan Papelbon had christened himself Cinco Ocho earlier this year? He’s even got it on his glove (as forwarded by Phil Johnson). … Jon Eisen just sent me a link to an archive that will take lots of time to explore. For now, though, here’s the cutest uni-related photo ever. … Yesterday I ran some old Detroit sports photos. As Doug Mooney points out, there’s plenty more where that came from. … Another small change for the Wizards: Player names, which had been white, are now bronze (good spot by Colin Wilcox). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Good video here featuring the Sharks’ equipment manager showing the art of skate-sharpening.

interesting mention of tom o’toole. my friend and i (who are both yankee fans) noticed that during game 2 of the alds and thought he was involved in a conspiracy (i guess drinking at the time also contributed to this theory) about releasing the gnats on joba.

OK, a couple things I see here that I just can’t get behind. First, the Wiz need either bigger letters, or to go back to the white lettering. The small bronze just doesn’t work well, at least not on the local TV broadcasts. Also, Carey Price’s mask would have been good had I not seen the white mask. The plain white was a fantastic throwback, and looked brilliant with the Habs’ white jerseys. Just a case where doing more resulted in less. I do like the Grizz unis with the Spanish flag colors, though. It’s odd, since I normally don’t like that color combination that much (the Florida Panthers, for example, I can’t stand watching) but for some reason, it just works there. I also like the reflective numbers. That’s got some nice pop to it.

Does it bother anyone else that Wake Forest’s WF logo on their helmet doesn’t have the white outline like the WF logo of their jersey? Just a pet peeve of mind. If you’re going to have the same logo on the helmet and the jersey, they should match if possible.

Lickliter is the BASKETBALL coach, not baseball.
agreed. if i was a local hat supplier (or even new era, twins enterprises, etc.), id offer mr. otoole a “set” of hats, all corresponding to his current colors, each with the indians logo affixed to it.
nice pub for him and the company…
i am really jumping on board this “alter the nba uniform with a stylization incorporating the host country’s flag colors”. even if/when the colors dont go at all with the uniform, its a great gesture, and intersting to see.
this trend reminds me of that period of time in spurs history when they had the paint splash of teal, pink and orange in the logo, and on their warm ups.
it had nothing to do with the team colors, but it looked ok.

Oh my God… Bullpen Cars… One of my all-time favorite baseball subjects that I wish I knew more about…
What I do know…
- The Red Sox old bullpen car is in one of the memorabilia shops across the street from Fenway
- I remember the Yankees using a pinstriped corolla when everyone else was using a standard baseball shaped golf cart.
Would love to know why they died out and when… probably was Terry Forster’s fault… the only way people could tell the “fat tub of goo” was an athlete was if he ran from the ‘pen without being winded.

Remember a year ago when we talked about logo disparities? Such as how the Old English D the Tigers use is different on the uni and the cap (the Yankees have this issue as well). I found a photo of Rudy Giuliani wearing a personalized Yankee jacket and the NY logo looks different than anything I’ve seen before. Or maybe it just looks odd because it’s white, not navy.
#28 by Fran on 10.12.07 10:53 am |
Vince, when you base your post on an article you should probably actually read it.
“Quite a lot of color, but not for every game. The O’Tooles make it to 20 or so each season.”, so he’s not there of every inning of every game.
Also, “His 10th-inning hat, an orange one, came out of the bag on Sept. 5.”, which would imply he is prepared for 10 innings before he repeats.

And like old-fashioned scoreboards that were prepared for maybe 11-inning games and revert back to inning one, if necessary, he starts his hat rotation over if the game goes a few more than the expected nine.
His 10th-inning hat, an orange one, came out of the bag on Sept. 5, and just before the Indians mobbed Ryan Garko after his game-winning RBI, Tom returned to his seat, and Joanne returned his hat.
You’re right about the 10th inning hat, I misunderstood.
As for the “he doesn’t go to every game”. I just assumed everyone understood that no one goes to all the games. I didn’t mean to imply he’s there every day.

No the Yankees seem to have 4 different NYs. Their Cap, Helmet, Home Jersey and dugout Jacket ALL have a different NY.

The worst thing about alternate uniforms in baseball is how they play into the superstitions of ballplayers. So now we’re subjected to the butt-ugly Rockies black vests all because they’ve won a few games in them. It makes you wonder how teams without alternate jerseys can ever change their luck or keep their luck going…
I still wish MLB would establish some uniform guidelines with respect to the alternates so that the home and road team both can’t wear dark colored shirts. Course, if that were to happen, then Arizona might try to wear their red or black tops to end the Rockies’ luck.

I read in teh book Crazy ‘08, great book that I seem to referece often here, that the NY logo came from an old NYPD medal that was given out. I don’t have the book here to give the exact passage, but I vividly remember the high level specifics as the original owner was a former police commissioner.

I’m a fourth year in KL Row, and when I saw that card in the membership gallery yesterday I thought “that sure looks like a band uniform” and then it was. My only complaint is that the adjusters should be at the same height, surely I’d fail a uniform inspection for such inattention to detail.

I had heard (who knows if it’s true) that the main reason bullpen cars were phased out were due to insurance costs and liability.
I had never heard of a player getting injured by the car or exiting the car so I don’t know how high the insurance cost would be.

Fashion hats are pure garbage, and like the mention of the female Phillies fan who wears every current Phillies jersey at every at-bat, it teeters more of ridiculous / stupidity than anything. I don’t go to a game to make a spectacle of myself. I’d sure love to know what kind of jobs these crazy people have in which they have so much disposable income!

Credit card company ripping off Uni Watch?
Everyone’s seen team-branded credit cards before, but this morning on my way in to work, I saw an ad on the side of a bus for credit cards designed like the local teams’ uniforms!
The card on the far right of the ad looked exactly like this — my Uni Watch membership card! Last year’s uniform and everything.
Will keep my eyes peeled and try to find out what bank is distributing these. (Uni Watch Bank of Delaware, LLC?) Will also try to get a photo.
Ian K, Matthew S, Robert — any of you guys seen this ad around here?

so what that they haven’t changed.

Like someone said earlier, they could probably get one of these hats the dollar store.
Why do we have to take ourselves so seriously? Why can’t we let this guy have his fun instead of criticizing him for it? I can only hope that when I am his age I have a sense of humor like that. The jersey thing is kind of stupid, with the lady in Philly, though. This is such a simple, unrelated not to the rest of the game. And it’s pretty funny to see an old guy wearing hats in those colors.
Let an old man have his fun. I think it’s great.

Their game worn inventory has always been overpriced and of questionable provenance IMO.

And now for something completely different . . . .
I am normally opposed to non-hockey sports teams, bands or other organizations putting their logos onto hockey jerseys, because it just looks goofy. I today stumbled across an exception. This Slayer shirt looks pretty cool.

Hard to view that and not be reminded of Jere Lehtinen’s evening with Slayer.

I have not yet seen such an ad, but now I will definitely be studying closely every bus that I see.

Best Bullpen car cameo in a movie:
Jake Taylor taking the bullpen car to Rene Russo’s apartment after a game… and hitting a ‘homerun’.
Jake Taylor is the man.

The uniforms on the Grizz look great. I wish I could say the same for the Wiz.

Iowa has a new basketball coach who wants to add player names to the backs of the jerseys, but a new name-free uni set was ordered before he was hired and the numbers are positioned too high to allow for names.
He needs to look into some below-the-number text action, like the WV Mountaineers once did.

I don’t think the Tigers ever had one. At Tiger stadium the relievers would warm up in foul territory on the baselines.

I work a block from a bus transfer station downtown. You better believe I’ll be examining every damn yellow DART bus I see. Does the card have “Modano”/9 in the background or just the Star outline?

Certainly different that last year’s jerseys.

the bullpen carts stopped being used because the pitchers would cramp up on the mound
