It’s funny how ridiculous uniform elements like color gradations and wraparound butt stripes can look OK — or least interesting — when applied to a sport you don’t care about, as seen here with the Pakistan cricket team, celebrating during their match against New Zealand earlier today. — Paul

I don’t care for cricket and I still think these wraparounds look bad. The 80s are over.
They should only been seen on surfing shorts / swim trunks.
Gradations can work in rare cases – this isn’t one of them.

The “Tank McNamara” comic strip has been riffing all week about how a (nonexistant) low-minor baseball league has had it’s playoffs disrupted; the league imported “unsafe” souvenirs, food and uniforms from China, and had to dump them!
Today’s strip (on “GoComics.com”) should bring a smile to those that Get It(TM)!

Since there were all of the discrepancies noted this week of shoulder and chest numerals not matching, how’s about the numbers not matching on the helmet and chest on Alabama? The program has had them conisitently not matching, which would just be more reasoning to how much they suck.

The picture is from the World Twenty20 cricket championships. Without delving too far into the rules of cricket, the game can be played in the long, 3 to 5-day test match, or in a shorter version, where a match can be completed in a few hours. Typically, in the longer test matches, the players still compete in sweater vests and white pants, and the shorter matches are the only time where there is a true national uniform. So, the cricketers go from one extreme to another. And really, if the play mainly in the sweater vests, who can begrudge some (albeit extreme) color schemes when they get the chance?
#12 by The Original Lee on 09.22.07 12:21 pm |
none of the kits in the Twenty20 world championships have been that good. india’s are decent. new zealand’s are nice, but theyre just black as to be expected. the rest are pretty much horrid.

I can cope with the colour gradation on Pakistan’s uniform, but the wraparound stripes are too much. I certainly prefer the colour gradation to some the uniforms they’ve had in the past which have been entirely lime green.
I agree that there aren’t any great uniforms in the Twenty20 championship, but Australia’s are a least interesting. They’re wearing yellow vests over grey underarmour style shirts, some long sleeved, some short.
The gloves may look a bit like “Hulk Hands” but I’m pleased to see the team making an effort. The wicketkeepers (think catcher in baseball) often use just plain black equipment, or in an unrelated colour.
One thing I noticed in the New Zealand side was that there was a variety of caps. Some of the players were wearing a fitted style that I have thought was long overdue. It seems odd that an international team should often play in one size fits all strap adjusted caps.

Some kind of uniform snafu in the french soccer league tonight. Due to the similarity between the two team’s kits, Marseille had to borrow one of their opponent’s alternate jersey to play the game. One could argue that they’d rather have played without any shirts on than with these maroon and pink monstrosities

So I’m watching the Louisville/Syracuse game on ESPN360 at the same time as I’m watching the NC State/Clemson game on WSBK. It’s very hard to keep track of everything, given the color schemes.
But that’s not my point.
Here’s my point:
One of the Syracuse players just squared up to the camera, and I thought, “Those partial shoulder stripes are just the stupidest thing ever!” It was just visceral. They’re completely pointless. I know this has been covered ad nauseam, but whoever it was that thought up partial stripes needs a good analyst.

Sure is quiet today. But of course, it’s Yom Kippur, so perhaps lots of our posters are forbidden from doing anything until sundown.
Ole Miss brought out the red jerseys against Florida (it usually wears blue at home). Like other Nike jerseys with shoulder stripes, there isn’t much room on the back between the stripes. Of course, that doesn’t matter much since UM doesn’t have names on the backs of the jerseys.

Here are some a couple of oddities from Washington high school football teams…
Here is a shot of Snohomish (in red). Why have the black stripe on the pants when it doesn’t go up into the shirt panels?
Here is Kentrdge (in white). The lightning bolts on the pants are really odd and they don’t match the helmets.
Here is Kentwood’s star running back Demetrius Bronson, #30. His teammate, #33, has MUCH wider jersey numbers than he is sporting, which seem to be closer to the rest of the team’s.
#31 by NateL on 09.22.07 4:53 pm |
Thanks for the help on the black bars. Couldn’t find anything on the UNC website. So obviously UniWatch was my next option.
I think it’s neat that all the sports are wearing them, not just football. It might also be an interesting study as to where the football teams are wearing them. (UNC – above nameplate, BC – above left sleeve logo, Miami – above the Nike logo)
#32 by Stevo on 09.22.07 4:56 pm |
The Snohomish mismatch is probably a case of either new pants/old jerseys or new jerseys/old pants. A lot of HS programs can only afford to buy one piece of the uni new in a given year. For instance, my Senior year we could only afford to get new road jerseys, so we still had to use our old home jerseys and pants. If you really want to see a nice mix, attend a Junior Varsity volleyball match. 2 teams with sometimes a total of 6 different unis, it’s like the United Colors of Volleyball.

Is it just me, or does Florida look much better in these pants they used to wear, versus the pants they’ve been wearing since Urban Meyer took over? They’ve always had both sets, but Ron Zook used to like the orange, and I agree with him. Also, I’d like to see more of this at home games and this gorgeous jersey worn by Emmitt Smith, with blue or white pants. This is just food for thought.

I think the orange pants go better with the white jerseys. In general, I think that white jerseys look best when the pants match the helmet. I like seeing 2 of the big 3 (helmet, jersey, pants)matching, so the blue jersey/blue pants/orange helmet works for me.

There are too many clicks required (even with text-to-image), and it’s too hard to weed through the topics I am disinterested in (pretty much anything to do with baseball or hockey – heresy, I know,) especially in the “ticker” sections.

Justin Anderson of Northern Illinois is wearing a number 43 jersey today instead of his normal #21. He’s still wearing a #21 helmet, and I haven’t heard why he’s wearing that jersey.
In a related note, now the Huskies have a black shoulder stripe on their away jerseys, that looks surprisingly sharp. I don’t remember that stripe being there last year, so unless I’m wrong it’s something to add to the list of uni changes for this year (I’m a student at NIU, and we never got NIU away games on TV so I don’t remember if there were shoulder stripes last year). The home uniforms are unchanged as far as I can tell

What constitutes the “uni-tard” look by official Uniwatch definition? It goes beyond just pants and jersey the same color, right? Are stripeless pants and matching socks (ie New Orleans Saints’ all blacks) both required?

Understandable, but spammers don’t try to infiltrate Oregon uniforms. The redundancies and hoop-jumping is to prevent the page from being buried in myspace-style spambot posts and phish food.
IMO, ‘unitard’ usually means same base color from shins to neck – jersey, pants, and connector sock.
Connector sock optional or sometimes not applicable.

I try to read all of the comments every day and I haven’t seen anyone make mention yet that the Padres’ Adrian “Agony” Gonzalez switched from pajama pants to knee-highs a few weeks back- he was slumping so he wanted to try something new. I noticed the Flyers’ backup goalie, Niittymaki, was sporting a Reebok jersey and Nike short pants (logo on the back left pantleg).
