Listen up, boys and girls, for today I bring you a bona fide scoop. It begins with a note I recieved yesterday from a source who checked in with the following: “Word I hear is that the NFL is going to go to Cs on the captains’ jerseys this year, NHL-style. They’re supposedly going to start during the regular season.”
This was news to me, so I checked with an NFL source, who passed along a press release I hadn’t previously seen, dated May 22nd of this year. According to the release, the league’s Player Advisory Council has been developing a “team captain leadership initiative” for this season, designed to “to support and recognize the importance of team leadership through the role of the captains.” Among the measures being considered: “captain identification on game uniforms.”
So are they going ahead with that plan? My NFL source initially indicated that the Cs were pretty much a done deal for this season. “Captains will wear a C on the right chest,” he told me. And what about teams that already have a patch in that spot? “The C will go above the patch.” (I didn’t think to ask about the Broncos, who present some unique challenges for letter placement.) But later in the day he told me that he’d asked a few more people and had now been informed that the Cs were just a “possibility,” although I got the strong sense that they’re, y’know, a strong possibility.
Captaincy designations aren’t so uncommon in the NCAA, but they’re rare in the pros. The last team to employ the C was the 1994 Patriots (here’s another shot), and the only other C-ified team I’m aware of is the 1983 Cowboys, who slapped the C on Danny White, Bob Breunig, Drew Pearson, and Ron Fellows.
Can’t say I’m in love with this idea. For starters, real estate on NFL jerseys is already in short supply, what with the disappearing sleeves, the massive NFL Equipment logo, the increasing use of chest wordmarks, and so on. Adding another element to the mix is gonna make for some seriously crowded jerseys.
And consider this: As we all learned last week, the Red Wings are moving their C and A designations to the other side of the jersey this season, because Reebok’s new tailoring template puts too many seams and fabric panels where the letters would normally appear (for further details, look here). Given that today’s football jerseys are a veritable crazy quilt of stretch panels and seams compared to hockey jerseys, I’m willing to bet right now that the NFL’s newfound embrace of the C — assuming it happens at all — won’t last long.
Research Project Update: A big pat on the back to everyone who responded to yesterday’s call for “one and done” uniforms (i.e., uniforms that were worn just once, or a handful of times, before being abandoned) — my ESPN column tomorrow will be stronger thanks to your efforts. I won’t have room to thank everyone by name within the column itself, but I’ll do so here on this site tomorrow.

Membership News: Very odd development on Monday, as two completely unrelated people both asked for Harlem Globetrotters treatments for their membership cards (you can see one of them at right). This tops the membership program’s previous coincidental oddity, which came a few weeks ago when three consecutive new enrollees asked for No. 17.
Meanwhile, if you’ve signed up for membership, have you checked to see if your name’s on the roster? Here’s why I ask: The current roster listing has 420 names, plus there are two members who’ve asked not to be listed (although their cards are shown in the design gallery), so that’s a total of 422 enrollees. There are 421 designs in the card gallery, plus there are three cards that haven’t yet been designed, so the full gallery would have 424 designs. That means there are two people who I somehow left off the roster. Are you one of them? Let me know.
Uni Watch News Ticker: I meant to list this on Monday, but it fell through the cracks when my computer crashed over the weekend (and by now most of you probably know about it anyway, but just in case…): Iowa State is letting fans vote on a new helmet design for 2008. … Meanwhile, the Fresno Grizzlies are asking for fan input on redesigning the logo (with thanks to Aaron Wiens). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: The Blue Jays have added an “SP” memorial patch for former team CEO/chairman Sam Pollock. … The Mets will be wearing Los Mets jerseys this Friday, for Fiesta Latina. … Several people have asked why I haven’t mentioned anything about the Little League World Series. Answer: Because I think the LLWS is bad news. The level of media coverage, the hype, etc. — it’s unhealthy for the kids involved, and arguably even worse for any kid watching it. I’ve written plenty of times about Little League, Pop Warner, and the like, and will continue to do so, but I won’t be party to something like the LLWS. … Nice little piece here about the Brewers’ batting helmets. … Very good article here about players who don’t wear batting gloves. … Just imagine the potential uni-related ramifications of this. … Scotty Johnson reports that dirt late model driver Scott James, who’s from Cincinnati, has a Bengals-themed helmet (and note the “Ocho Tres,” because his car number is 83). … Good catch by Jason Taylor, who notes that Andruw Jones appears to have added an American flag decal to the back of his batting helmet. … Victory Pennants honcho Morris Levin totally kissed my butt wrote some really nice stuff about Uni Watch in his blog yesterday. … Here’s yet another photo of the “8″ on Fenway Park’s exterior wall, and in this shot you really can see that the numeral is upside-down (nice job by Matthew Knell). … Merchandise malfunction, as documented by Justine DeCotis: “I work in the team store of the Pawtucket Red Sox. Recently this hat came in with the correct PawSox logo on the front, but on the bill, where it’s supposed to say ‘Pawtucket Red Sox’ on one side and ‘Pawtucket, Rhode Island’ on the other, it says ‘Atlanta Braves.’” … Cardinals punter Scott Player is currently doing an excellent Hulk Hogan impersonation. “Add in his single-bar facemask and the fact his last name is on most prototype jerseys, and Scott’s my new favorite,” writes Eric D.

The “C” wouldn’t work for the Ravens since they have 3 new captains each week. I guess you could sew it on everyone’s uniform but then it would lose its meaning, you know?

Just wondering: anyone think the NFL is going to add “Vick” to the infamous list of words you can’t put on the back of your personalized NFL jersey? After all, Rae Carruth’s name is on the list (but of course, you can still get a Rams jersey with “Rentzel” on it or a Bills jersey with “Simpson” on it).

As I referee, I think the C could make things easier. The captain is the only on-field player allowed to have discussions with the referee. When a penalty flag is thrown, the referee explains the options to the captain (or captains, in the case of 2 separate penalties). This way, you know exactly the player who will decide to accept the penalty or not.

We’re getting closer to the 50th anniversary of the old AFL. I’ve seen some on-line stuff including a pleading letter at http://www.remembert... sent in 2005 to the late Lamar Hunt asking for his influence in seeing to it that a special patch adorn the all the NFL unis and if there’d be any chance at the old AFL teams would wear those 1960 unis. Has anyone any knowledge of what if anything the NFL is planning for the anniversary? I can’t imagine them not doing it big since the AFL is such a nostalgic part of football and because of the impact it had on the game we have today. Unis would be an issue for some teams though…would the Tennessee Titans where the old Houston Oiler unis say for a game??? Or would say KC don the Dallas Texan helmets for a game…and what about the Jets…would they become the Titans for a game or two? Interesting questions to ponder…but I gotta say that if this goes down I do sincerely hope that the Broncos will wear those infamous unis with the wild socks!!!!! Let’s hope if the league does do it they do it right and not like some of the screw ups with the throwbacks in ‘94.

In Re: LLWS, i caught a game where one team was wearing stirups, but they all had them on backwards …. what is wrong with the parents letting them go out like that?
Also, why “Los Mets”? The mets do not have “The Mets” on their jersey? If anything, they should put Nueva York on the jersey.

Hey. So a while ago there was a discussion on sailor’s hats on mascots (I think they were all in college sports). I found this on the Victory Pennants site that Paul linked to. I’ve been a Michigan fan for 20-odd years and I’ve never seen this before. Does anyone know if the pennant site actually copies old team logos or fabricates them themselves based on period designs? In my time as a fan, Michigan hasn’t used an actual wolverine for any of their major sports (granted I don’t go back all that far), let alone a wolverine in a sailor’s hat. Where could this wolverine be sailing to, I wonder? Canada? On the Great Lakes?

As far as the LLWS, with ESPN broadcasting EVERY game, I agree, that this is not healthy for the kids.
If you think that the ESPN coverage is over-done, you should be in or near a city that has a “team” playing in Williamsport. It is disgusting how the carnivorous media covers these kids.
And what is sad, is that these “teams” are not true “teams” from the various Little Leagues across the world, they are all-star teams, kids picked from all over the league.
#21 by Tony on 08.22.07 9:40 am |
I’m pretty sure that Vincent Brown wore a “C” on his jersey when he was the captain of the Patriots in the early 1990’s. Sorry, I don’t have a pic.
#22 by Eriq Jaffe on 08.22.07 9:40 am |
The captain’s “C” always reminds me of this “Palehose 6″ comic. The White Sox (and every other team) were depicted as pirates for the run of the strip last season. This year, they started out as spacemen and have transfigured into a bar band.
#23 by scott on 08.22.07 9:43 am |
ESPN wouldn’t broadcast Little League World Series games if people weren’t watching them.
Is there evidence all the media attention actually harms the kids? What, do they all grow up to become serial killers or something? Geez, guys, lighten up.

i have a love/hate relationship with little league and the llws.
a love in the sense that i see it as a goal for every kid who suits up to try to play their best to become an all star, and work hard to advance to williamsport to represent their country (or at least their country’s geographic location).
a hate in the sense that i never had an opportunity to play in it no matter how many titles my all star teams won. we often wondered how we would win all of our all star tourneys and then that was it! no advancement to the llws! as players we all watched and hoped that “next year” we’d get there and represent the north east. it wasnt until years later that we all found out that we never had a shot because our league wasnt a member of the little league of america, and we werent members due to high league membership costs. thats how it was explained to me later on.

I think the Twins should have a Canada night for Justin Morneau and make him feel better. Isn’t there a duth player somewher ein the league too? That mans we need a Holland night.
I am all for teams recognizing local populaces. San Diego has military night for an obvious reason, but I’ve been through Brewerville and if they’re going to change the language on their jersey, it should not be to Spanish, but to German. I like how the White Sox have their half way to St. Patty’s Day jerssey as a way to recognize Chicago’s South Side Irish (something I grew up in).
Every community has Spanish speaking folks, but that doesn’t mean the community is predominatly latino, therefore, in my opinion, meaning not every team needs to have their Spanish nights where they change the jersey.
I can’t remember where it is, I think it’s here in Minnesota, but some MLB team throught the season recognizes many different nationalities having Italian night, Irish night, Hmong night and so on, but they don’t change their jerseys on those nights, they simply make reference to it on the jumbotron and there is a noticible influx in fans of that nationality that night.
If teams are going to continue this Spanish thing, I demand Irish jerseys with team names in Galic darn it.

totally agree with you on LLWS, i have always hated it. from the crying kids to the annoying parents, i was at a bar the other day and they had it on so i watched some of it, for one almost every kid hits a homerun and every time one does the entire team comes out of the dugout to mob him like he just hit a walk off in game 7 of the WS, hey kid its the first inning of the regional game get a grip! also its just bad sloppy baseball, yuk. and since its on tv its fair game so i won’t lighten up.
and stuby i feel bad for your daughter, peach and dark green? yikes! i think that should be one time for the parent to step in a youth league and put a stop to it.

I’m not surprised you can’t get a Vick jersey; when the indictments came down a few weeks, ago, my wife (who works the order phones for a large Internet sports retailer) said the order went out - no taking orders for Vick merchandise; they wouldn’t sell it.
(BTW, there was a story on a Georgia station that the Atlanta animal shelter is getting a ton of donations of Vick jerseys and T-shirts that they’re using for towels, cleaning rags and the like.)
#39 by jaye on 08.22.07 10:18 am |
Peopole are always screaming for “good news” in the media. Many see the LLWS as good news. The kids are clean and well-scrubed and doing something “positive.”
What they don’t see are the endless hours and expense some parents go to. They don’t know what damage is being done to 11-year-olds throwing curve balls.
I have two Little Leaguers only because that’s the only league in our area. If there were something other than AAU (which is just as bad, if not worse), we’d be there.

#41 by Chance on 08.22.07 10:19 am |
Really? That’s surprising.
On the MLB shop, you couldn’t get one of those. Their first two rules of customizing:
- League player names must match current team rosters and the team for which they currently play
- Retired player names cannot be printed on the team’s jersey from which they retired
#42 by Adam on 08.22.07 10:21 am |
I hope you’re joking, because it seems really obvious that “Latino Night” has nothing to do with making the players feel better and everything to do with trying to expand the Latino fanbase.

The official Spanish White Sox site is loswhitesox.com, so if they did do something like that I suppose they probably wouldn’t translate the words. However, I hope they never do…
When they made the effort to translate, “White Sox” became “Las Medias Blancas.” The Sox now have a weekly program on one of the Spanish language stations titled “Orgullo Sox” (Sox Pride), so they may no longer feel the need to translate the name.

I disagree, ESPN pretty much broadcasts anything they want, regardless if people watch it or not. Actually, I believe they try to force-feed sports to us that normally people don’t care about (i.e. Arena Football, Darts, Bowling, and the LLWS).
As far as the kids, yes, they all grow up to be serial killers, its a fact!
#45 by cliff rancho on 08.22.07 10:27 am |
I don’t really think it’s a bad thing to have the kids on TV for the Little League, but what I don’t like is just the way ESPN covers it. With all the highlights, action shots, zoom in fist-pumps, etc. it just makes it seem over-the-top. Who is actually going, “Ohhhh damn! That’s aweeeesome!”? besides 10 year olds?
It’ll be like if ESPN ever covered one of those 1895 baseball games and there were highlights every inning set to the tone of the latest Black Eyed Peas single. It just doesn’t work in my opinion.
#46 by Nate from SRU on 08.22.07 10:33 am |
If you think it is bad enough having it broadcast on ESPN every waking second it is on, try living in the town where it actually happens (South Williamsport, PA) The influx of tourists from all over the world and country who think they are better than everyone else because of the fact their little kid and a bunch of kids like them get to play at some glorified stadium, the traffic and the fact that they can’t get the damned borough name right. It’s insane. Alright enough for that rant on the LLWS…
I think the C on the NFL jerseys isn’t a good idea. It would look too out of place. It would be like adding a facemask to all major league batting helmets (like they do in the LLWS).
#47 by johnt on 08.22.07 10:35 am |
Mets used to have an international week which they would celebrate different heritages, including Irish. They also have worn green shirts(as do other MLB teams) and with green hats for St. Patricks Day during Spring Training. They also did a free give away of the Green hats (had a few myself). I do not think that there is an appropriate translation in ‘Irish’ or Gaeilge (Language is Irish not Gaelic) for Mets. But that has not stopped ‘Los Mets’. Chugainn Mets (not too sure how right that is!!)

I’m not a big fan of the LLWS, but not because of the hype surrounding it and the coverage of it.
I don’t like it because of the rules. The pitching distance and base distance is way too short. No stealing or leading off is stupid, and not being able to run on a passed ball third strike is dumb. The fact that these are All Star teams irks me, too.
When I was 12, we played AABC santioned ball. The rules were very similar to MLB, but the bases and pitching distance were shorter (but not as short as the LLWS). There were many teams in the leagues I played in and my younger brother played in that seemed to be better than these all star teams in the LLWS.
Also, RE: curve balls being thrown by pitchers. There is a good chance that they are throwing “slip” pitches. I used to throw one of those when I was 12, and it would curve, but there was no breaking of the wrist, so it was no more taxing on my arm than throwing a fastball.

i think readers here can manage to criticize anything. the llws kids are just that… kids (except for almonte, but that seems isolated) who aren’t playing for money or endorsements. they’re playing because they love baseball. they’re 12 years old, so please don’t blame them for not being major league talent. and at this stage this is the most important thing.
it’s great to see a whole team get excited for a home run. these kids have been playing through tons of rounds (much more than mlb playoffs) so every moment in the llws is awesome. And wasn’t that game saving catch on a possible walkoff not one of the best sports moments you’ve seen in a while?
the llws is great becuase it gets to the root of why we love sports, no money, just the glory. let these kids have their day in the sun.

The kids aren’t the problem with the LLWS, it’s everyone else. The kids are pawns of overly aggressive parents and a TV network looking to fill airtime in a traditionally poor TV sports month. It wasn’t long ago when only the final game was shown on TV. Now we need REGIONAL games? Please. This is just ESPN turning its hype machine to something else to cram down our throats (like the aforementioned poker, Arena Football, etc.).
Although even if it was the greatest thing ever, holy crap those uniforms are AWFUL.

#58 by michael on 08.22.07 10:53 am |
yeah we basically can criticize anything thats what makes this site fun. i’m not saying a team shouldn’t be excited because they hit a home run i just find the whole team gathering around at the plate after every home run (which are very frequent i might add) to crowd around the player who hit it and make a big spectacle out of it, it shows to me nothing but disrespect and showboating, high five him in the dug out and crowd around him when he hits the game winning home run not in the first inning. and honestly llws is the embodiment of whats wrong with sports from espn to all the stupid sponsors, annoying parents and coaches.
#59 by Mike V on 08.22.07 10:57 am |
You are 100% correct. He only escaped the LLWS serial killer syndrome (aka “The Little League Loonies”) because the hockey gods knew of his great potential and saved him from a damning fate. However, now that he signed with the Rangers I have to watch him 8 times a year (the good), possibly helping win some games against by beloved Pens (the bad). Here is evidence of a LLWS player who came down with the Little League Loonies (the ugly).

Regarding the LLWS. I like the games on TV, what I don’t like is the overhype of it all. Let the games and the kids have their charm. Let them wear their normal LL uniforms, not some lame generic uni.
If the Mets win the NL east, do they ditch their uniforms for ones that read “NL East”? The wildcard winners “NL Wildcard”? Does the World Series pit two teams wearing “American League Champions” vs. “National League Champions”?

ESPN needs to air things like regional LLWS games because they think we actualy care abotu them. the truth is I watch when I was a kid because they were kids my own age. I watch in college becasue it was something on TV while I had nothing to do. Now that I am grown and have a life, I barely know who is playing. I only know there is a team from Coon Rapids, MN because it was in the newspaper up here.
They air high school football and basketball games because the NHL went to the darn VS network where nobody can watch them. I hope the NHL and ESPN realize how much they need each other.

Possibly a bit late as an addition to the “One and Done” list, but thought I might as well add it anyway.
Manchester United wore a one off kit for the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final against Barcelona. Their home kit was the traditional red, and their away kit that season had been blue both of which feature on Barca’s kit, so United wore an all white kit for the final. Of course, Barca wore their blue change kit anyway, which rendered the whole thing pointless, but it was still a nice shirt.

In the first inning Netherelands was already down 6-0 and they were still joking around have having a blast. It’s refreshing to see such pure love of the game.

That’s REALLY cool.

I’m so glad to know there are others who agree with me about the LLWS.
I’ve always hated the LLWS for the same reason I can’t stand reality TV - It’s not reality when there are a dozen cameras running around getting everything on tape and turning regular people into “celebrities.”

My daughter and I were watch the LLWS last night and man, I felt awful for the pitcher who gave up a few runs to lose the game after pitching really well. The poor kid is *12* for pete’s sake. I know that kisd need to learn winning and losing, but the pressure in this seems a bit much.

People would also tune in to watch a lynching. That doesn’t mean it’s a good thing.
But it also doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a bad thing, either. I don’t think ESPN’s broadcasts of the games changes the kids who are playing in any real way, so why get worked up about ESPN’s broadcasting decisions?

It really was, but the coolest thing I did with the Islanders was when they launched “The New Ice Age” in 1992 with Trottier returning as the VP of Marketing. They had the pres conference followed by a great lunch. All season ticket holders who held theirs since 1972 were invited to attend. My grandparents had 8 tickets and I got to go. Loads of pucks and photos were autograhped. I even got a free t-shirt out of it. It was a very memorable event.

The San Diego Chargers have chosen to wear their white jerseys on opening day at home.

I think Jack O’Connell from MLB.com needs to check some facts prior to submitting his articles. Jason Kendall (at least since he’s been a Cub) has abandoned the bare knuckles and taken to wearing white (very, very white) batting gloves. I don’t know if he was wearing them in Oakland, since I’m in Chicago….Anyone know when he started wearing ‘em?

blocked…
thankfully this site, and the sports message boards I post to are not and that’s what most of my day consists of. Hell, for about two months, I was in on a disscussion on my college’s board relating to the new Nike All-Sports contract and what it was going to do the the football uniforms, as well as the addition of a stripe to the helmet that was rumored but never happened. Just bringing the Uni Watch to other people…spreading the good word…

So… I guess if the St. Louis Cardinals joined this trend, they’d trot out jerseys with their 1967-68 nickname, “El Birdos”? (Yes, I know it should be “Los Birdos”; nobody pointed out that goof in 1967!) Since the Mets keep insisting that their name isn’t a contraction of “Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York”, I guess “Met” is the same in English, Spanish, German, and/or Mandarin Chinese!
‘Course, the San Diego Padres have “Spanish Day” on their unis every day! And what the heck is the Spanish translation for “Dodgers”?

Regarding the players who don’t wear batting gloves, Moises Alou gets his hands tough by urinating on them.

I’d be willing to bet that even though the website does not catch it, CONVICKTED would not be allowed by NFL Shop.
People encountered the same thing a couple seasons ago when they tried to get Falcons #7 jerseys with MEXICO on the back.

They are frickin’ 12 years old. I never hit a home run in little league - a gap hitter though ;) - anyways, you want bitch about the whole dugout coming out for a home run, chew on this (and they are grown women!!!)

He should have requested number 1 when he signed with the Mets. I thought it might have been unofficially retired but Castillo got it when he came over from the Twinkies a few weeks ago.

As a Caps fan…I’ve got no love for the Isles. (I just remember Pat LaFontaine ripping my heart out in 5th grade @ about 2am…that multi-OT game.) But I’ve always liked Turgeon. Hated that Hunter ran him through the boards after that goal in the playoffs.
