I can’t imagine why anyone would want to watch something as completely irrelevant as the Hall of Fame game, which is pointless even by NFL exhibition standards. But it’s a good thing someone watched, because now we have our first real uni-related development of the football season. As I first mentioned in yesterday’s Ticker, several people who watched the game reported seeing a little green dot on the back of some of the quarterbacks’ helmets (here’s a larger view). Most people seemed to think it had something to do with the radio sets that the QB helmets are equipped with, and it turns out they were right — sort of.
ProFootballTalk.com reported yesterday that the green dot “to help officials confirm that only one player on offense is wearing a helmet with a radio receiver from the coaching staff. So, if a team plans to put two quarterbacks on the field at the same time [for a trick play], one of them must change helmets before entering the game.” (You can see the full report by searching for “green dot” on this page.)
But how does the dot end up on the helmet? Is it embedded into the plastic by the manufacturer, or is it just a decal applied by the team? If the latter, what’s to stop a team from beating the system by “forgetting” to slap on the decal? I posed that question to NFL spokesman Dan Masonson, who responded thusly: “It’s a decal. The team’s equipment manager puts the decal on. Officials will make random spot checks throughout game to make sure they are on proper helmets.”
I meant to ask Dan why green was chosen as the operative color, but I forgot. I didn’t want to bug him again, so instead I e-mailed Giants equipment manager Joe Skiba (soon to be the subject of the next Uni Watch video report, incidentally), who responded, “Why green? I guess they said, ‘Let’s give the equipment guys some of the ugliest decals to throw on a helmet.’ Personally, I like the idea of having defenders spot the green dot from the backside and hitting the QB.”
I kinda like the idea of color-coded decals. Maybe they could impose the same “only one on the field at a time” rule for the following decals:
- Red = Only player allowed to make stupid TD celebration
Blue = Only player allowed to make stupid sack celebration
Gray = Only player allowed to make first down signal
Orange = Only player allowed to whine when flagged for a penalty
Brown = Only receiver allowed to lobby for pass interference call
Plaid = Only player allowed to have one chinstrap buckle unsnapped
And so on. Admit it, it’s a brilliant system. Mr. Goodell, I await your call to discuss the financial particulars.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Did you realize that pine tar rags have team logos on them? I didn’t until last night, when Matthew Lepke sent me this note: “The camera crew from Fox North caught the Indians using a Tampa Bay(!?!) pine tar rag in the on-deck circle tonight. Very strange. As the Twins’ announcers said, ‘No wonder they aren’t scoring many runs.’” … Pulitzer-worthy move by the Houston Chronicle, which is providing a very amusing tutorial on how readers can convert their David Carr jerseys into Matt Schaub jerseys. Of course, the best move might be not to spend $250 on a jersey to begin with, but maybe they’ll run that bit of advice next week. … “Fanbanta.com has been having a ‘Design a Kit’ contest to publicize the launch of their website and to possibly outfit a Scottish 3rd Division team they are sponsoring,” writes David Walker. “Most of the designs are, as it turns out, horrible. But interesting.” … Good site dedicated to 1978 World Cup uniforms here (good find by Denis Hurley). … Intersting shot here of UConn players being fitted for their football helmets without facemasks (kudos to Matt O’Brien). … We’ve all heard about how the “armor” worn by Barry Bonds and others allows hitters to lean over the plate with impunity. But according to this analysis Bonds’s armor may also aid the mechanics of his swing (thanks, Vince). … Speaking of Bonds, several people have mentioned to me that he had his fly unzipped while on deck about a week ago. I couldn’t find a good shot, but it’s plainly visible in this video clip. … And speaking of XYZ issues, remember that item last week about Kerwin Danley umpiring with his fly unzipped? Here’s the visual evidence (with thanks to Vince for poring over the game video). … Great find by Scott Turner, who stopped designing membership cards just long enough to find this great photo of early-’70s White Sox stirrups. … A week or so ago I briefly linked to a photo of the Redskins’ 75th-anniversary throwback jerseys, but then I had to take down the link. It must be kosher now, though, because the jersey is being shown on the NFL’s own site. Let’s hope the sock stripes match the sleeves. … Wyoming is apparently moving to a Broncos-style template. Full unveiling on Friday (with thanks to John Eisel). … Good rundown here on the history of the Cork jerseys in the Irish sports of hurling and football (as forwarded by Denis Hurley). … “A buddy of mine named Michael Carasik lived in Chicago during the early 1980s,” writes Morris Levin (whose Victory Pennants site sells some great throwback pennants, incidentally). “He was part of a group of Cubs fans who were active in the Jewish community. Ivan DeJesus played shortstop so they had T-shirts made up that read, ‘Jews for DeJesus.’” … Rick Porter reports that the Penguins and Sabres will wear throwback uniforms for their New Year’s Day game, which may be held outdoors. … Yesterday I linked to this commercial (and noted that the Chargers’ lightning bolt designs were inconsistent). That prompted a note from Steve Due of AIS Uniforms, which manufactured the unis for the commercial: “The Bears jerseys were cut on an older pattern that is baggy. The Chargers were a new-style jersey that we had to make patterns for and had three days to do everything. As is commonly the case, since Reebok, Nike, Under Armour and the rest aren’t manufacturers, but promotion-driven, they plan to have things ready for commercials and often can’t, so they have to rely on AIS/Sportsrobe to make them. Usually with the knowledge that a cast and huge crew are going to be shooting in a very short turnaround. Often with nothing to go on but some pictures.” None of which really explains why the lightning bolts were inconsistent — stay tuned. … Latest minor league team to wear pink jerseys: the Portland Beavers. … An Australian Rules Football team was recently fined for wearing the wrong uniform (cheers to Steven Russell). … After a few weeks of back and forths, it looks like the logo creep on NFL photographers’ vests is here to stay. … Speaking of logo creep, people who wonder why I get so worked up over corporate marketing logos should take a look at this. … Jeremy Brahm reports that skullcaps are becoming increasingly common in Japanese baseball, but the players wearing them seem to lose their caps and helmets with distressing regularity. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Steve Prudente reports that the announcers in last night’s Giants/Nats game mentioned that Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum keeps track of his strikeouts by writing tally marks under his brim. Gotta find a visual of that. … Also from last night: Jarrod Saltalamacchia wore a logo-free helmet for part of last night’s game (he later wore a proper one), and he’s switched from No. 23 to 25, but I’m only showing that because it’s fun to see his name on the back of a jersey. … The 49ers will wear throwback uniforms for their season-opening game on September 10th, in honor of Bill Walsh. … Soccer news from Nick Noyes, who writes: “Freddy Adu’s new club in Portugal, Benfica, will be sporting new kits this season, with the road variation featuring pink.” Further details here.

Following from yesterday’s comments on Kentucky’s helemets, it appears the defense will be wearing the stripe, but only in practice. From the Lexington Herald-Leader:
(new defensive coordinator Steve)Brown has borrowed a practice routine that could help along those lines. New secondary coach David Lockwood used it at Minnesota.
The players have a stripe going down the middle of their practice helmets so that the coaches can tell whether the players are zeroed in on their particular gaps instead of watching the ball.
“A lot of times as coaches, you’re not in position to see where their eyes are,” Brown said. “Every play has a key, and we have to know where their eyes are because that allows them to play fast and aggressive if they’re reading their keys. We can tell by the helmets if they’re doing that. This guarantees you know where they’re looking at.”

Benfica… pink… ugh! My favorite club, with such wonderful traditional simple red uniforms over the years (for the most part), why the pink and black. Damn adidas. I’m actually starting a team locally and we’re going by the Benfica name, you will not see us in pink!!
Actually, that leads me to ask, anyone can suggest a good soccer uniform outfitter?
#5 by My name is not Earl on 08.07.07 8:59 am |
49ers should wear the throwbacks all year in honor of Walsh. You know Nolan would want to do it, being the historically-minded person that he is. But of course, the NFL is extremely strict with its uniforms, so it won’t happen.
Also, last night I saw Jeff Samardzija pitch his first game for the Cubs’ AA affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies (he threw quite well). Everyone on the Smokies was wearing his pants pajama style. Do the Cubs have some sort of rule requiring their minor leaugers to do this?

Why that nasty green color for the dots? Readily available at an office supply store, readily visible and, more relevantly, it contrasts with every team’s helmet.
#7 by James P. on 08.07.07 9:03 am |
two football uni comments. (1) I was trained to never fit a helmet completely till after the facemask was attached. You do fit the head to see how the shell will fit the head, but sometimes, the facemask will tighten or widen the shell enough to make the helmet not fit properly.
(2) Louisiana Tech University–my alma mater and WAC sleeper–will be adding a white stripe to their helmets this year. They are also changing their uniforms thanks to their new Nike contract. The new uniform will be made public August 12th.

wanted to say i think it’s great the 49ers will be wearing their 80s unis to celebrate bill walsh. i think they should revert back to wearing these unis all the time, frankly. their older unis were great. who else agrees? the ones they’ve been wearing since the 90s are just eye sores compared to the simplicity of the montana-era unis.
by the way, the broncos need to switch back to the orange crush unis as well.
#36 by Stuby on 08.07.07 10:29 am |
I agree on both counts. I am a lifelong Niner fan and couldn’t understand why they would go away from the uniform in which they had success. Plus the older one is just better to look at.
The Broncos are 2-0 in the new unis in Super Bowls and 0-4 in the old ones, so going back will proabably never happen. I’d like to see the Pats go back to their old unis also, but for the same reason as the Broncos, I don’t see that ever happening.

The mascot bears a resemblance to Purdue Pete. As to why the Steelers are doing this, it’s clearly a marketing ploy to get fans to buy more Steeler-themed things for their kids. Also, the Mascot can make public appearances so the players don’t have to.

As just a life long Benfica fan I guess that incorporating pink is just something that I never wanted to see. Nothing against pink, just not my classic Benfica I love. The new home jersey though is gorgeous, and fortunately, even when on the road they tend to wear their home/primary jersey. Cathy, I agree, if they are going to add the logo, I would prefer the classic Adidas logo, but with the shoulder stripes already there, I say get rid of the logo all together.
Andrew and CJ, thanks for the link and suggestion. I’ll probably go with them. Our season won’t start until April, but as soon as I get our uniforms and our website up, I will certainly let everyone here see, and critique it, ha ha.

It seems that teams with green helmets (Eagles and Seahawks, I think) would be able to use a different color dot, as long as it’s a contrasting color, not part of the team’s normal color scheme, and the referees know what color to look for. If they’re smart, they wrote the rule to allow for that flexibility.
With how much “authentic” jerseys cost these days, I’m surprised that there are not companies that’ll let you bring/mail in your jersey of some player that’s no longer on the team, and have it converted to a new player by replacing the name and number. Maybe someone that’s handy with scissors and a sewing machine should start something like that.

I’ve been utterly unable to post this, despite several attempts since Saturday, so today I’m trying just one link to see if that works!
Arkansas State University unveiled their new uniforms at Saturday’s Media Day, after switching from Russell to adidas…
Fans should have no problem telling the players, even without a scorecard…
There were some tweaks to the side striping, and this year’s helmet features a “3-D” look on the “STATE” logo, and what I can only call “sparklies” on the rest of the otherwise-black helmet.
All-in-all, the logo creep wasn’t too bad, either.
While A-State remains the “Indians” for one final season, you’ll notice that absolutely nothing on this uniform uses, depicts, or even hints at the “Indians” nickname. That will be changed (most likely) by this time next year… meaning Arkansas State will field an entire Team “To Be Named Later”!
Paul, I hope you don’t mind, but (in addition to my broadcasting “credentials”) I identified myself as the Jonesboro, Arkansas correspondent for UniWatch to my fellow reporters! They were quite impressed with my membership card, and some of ‘em even already knew about the site!
The “album” with the pictures should be available here… I hope!

Worked w/the Redskins on new uni designs back in 2005 and adding black was a huge focus…then the Skons went on a winning streak and put the ideas on ice…now with the 75th it looks like the Billy Kilmer look will be in embraced.
Sleeves do not really exist on NFL jerseys these days so although the Skins sleeve treatment look sharp, the game unis will not have them…

Among the Media Day activities were professional photographers taking those helmet-less “action” shots used with pre-season articles about individual players, so the WRs, RBs, and DBs were all wearing gloves.
ASU’s Board of Trustees will officially act on a combined athletic/university/student/alumni committee recommendation (reached earlier this summer) to quit using the “Indians” nickname at the Board’s next scheduled meeting in September. The school will most likely hire a marketing firm to winnow suggestions for a new team name. After student/alumni/community input, the AD will make a recommendation for a new nickname to the Board… Arkansas State will (by my best guess) become the “Something Elses” sometime next summer.

i agree, that is probably why the broncos and pats don’t revert to the old designs. but as a broncos fan i don’t mind at all. even though they lost 4 bowls in those unis, i have so many great memories from those years. in fact, the drive is still my favorite bronco memory and it occurred in the orange unis. the old logo is so classic. i know, i’m pining for nostalgia here, i realize that. but there is something to be said for the older unis, pats, broncos, niners being among the best ever. that’s why i love the browns, bears, and raiders unis - for not fixing what isn’t broken.

Watching sportscenter or baseball tonight the other day I quickly saw a snippet of a story where they were talking about Florida Marlins pitcher Rick Vanden Hurk and how his name has been corrected after appearing incorrectly throughout the year.
I haven’t been able to find a linkable photo but from the photo gallery on the Marlins webpage it seems it used to read:
Van Den Hurk
Vanden Hurk
My memory for the short bit I saw on tv is that the new appropriate reading was:

Unless the nameplate is the same size, you get big holes where the stitching was. I frequently had this request at the store where I used to work with NHL jerseys. If a star player was traded for another star player, people would want to “re-customize” their jerseys.
It doesn’t work, and the jerseys look shoddy. NFL jerseys are much the same way, especially with the shiny shoulder yokes.

I was trying to figure out who the mascot looked like. How about this?

Looks like this guy’s cousin

The ‘niners should make the switch to those throwbacks permanent. That’s a classic look that should never have gone in the first place.

Maybe it’s my not being a Raiders fan, but why would ANYONE buy an Aaron Brooks jersey in the first place?

They should have learned from all of the poor Saints fans that bought one….boy I’m glad I saved my money!

Some KG uni news:
The Timberwolves have no immediate plans to retire the No. 21 jersey of Kevin Garnett, the future hall of famer who was traded to the Celtics last week. “But if somebody asks for that number, I don’t think I’m going to give it out,” team owner Glen Taylor said. “Kevin was a special guy for our franchise and for Minnesota.”
Source
The other day it was mentioned that he was being featured on the website sans number, though according to the roster, he’s going with the #5 that he had at the press conference announcing the trade.

As long as they don’t wear the 1981-style pants, I would be fine with it. Those pants were ugly in the late ’70s and ’80s, and they remain ugly. Those stripes were so wide and unsightly . . .

Hey Felipe, guess what the P in my name stands for… yep, same last name, unfortunaltely different teams. Nice to see another Portuguese soccer fan on here. Honestly, what do you think of that Benfica 2nd Jersey?

If anyone needs to make their throwbacks permanent, its the Bills.

I’ll give you my two cents: U-G-L-Y. (The sponsor logo is much better, but the pink/black combo with the white template lines is just awful.)

I know someone yesterday was looking for pictures of the Lakeland Flying Tigers in their road Unis. We should probably have some good ones tomorrow and there will probably even be some clips on espn. Pedro Martinez is pitching for the St. Lucie Mets tonight against Lakeland in St. Lucie.

Saltalamacchia started off wearing 16, not 23. 23 was Teixeira’s number. 25 used to belong to Jerry Hairston, Jr., so I’m thinking that Salty bought it from him…

If the Sabres and Pens are going to be allowed to wear throwback designs this season dispite RBK not being able to produce third jerseys for each team I would take that as confirmation that the outdoor game would be played and that the special occasion calls for special jerseys.

Can I get an “AMEN” from the faithful?
Seriously, that royal/navy/red/silver/white color scheme they wear now is hideous. To quote Groucho Marx:
“That’s not a scheme - it’s a conspiracy” ;-)
