When I used to go to watch the Packer training camp (mid 70’s era, prior to the arrival of Favre and after the Lombardi era) there were more players than kids with bikes. You could run behind your favorite player as he crushed the air out of your tires (on your Schwinn ‘banana seat’ special) without fear of getting assaulted by autograph hounds. The only obstacle was the occasional (players/coaches?) car parked in a nearly empty lot. I know, I know I sound like your grandparents but ‘those really were the days’! (Go Lynn Dickey!)

I’m sure he knows this by now, but I’ll throw it out here right now: that “alien” helmet is a time-trial helmet. All riders have separate gear for the time trials, where comfort, ventilation, and safety are all sacrificed in favor of aerodynamics and speed. (Note the rear wheel without spokes.)

Note from Panthers Training Camp yesterday…
Dan “the walking concussion” Morgan was sporting a Schutt DNA helmet. It’s the first I’ve seen in the NFL. hope the SKYDEX Cushioning helps him play more than 12 games this year.

I know its splitting hairs, but I see a difference between a sponsor’s logo being plastered across a cyclist or driver vs. Nike, Adidas and the like placing their logo everywhere.
I don’t know why, but this bothers me more than this.

I think the panthers have needed a color/ logo change for a while, and I was hoping for that to occur here. They haven’t been relevant for years, and a team in south florida should not have a red/ yellow/ navy blue color scheme.

The Panthers downgraded, I think. The Predators-style piping doesn’t work and, once again, gives it the apron look, though I notice it much more in Florida’s uniform. But they have a good color scheme (would have liked to see a red home jersey, though). A complaint against the Preds jersey was the T-shirt look, but upon furthur examination the Bruins away jersey has the same problem.

Interesting banter on the Cubs-Reds WGN broadcast. Apparently, Reds SS Dave Concepcion was issued jersey number 57 when he came up in 1970, but they couldn’t fit his name around the 57 (the Reds had those massive name letters) and they changed it to 13 in order to have enough room.

calgary needs to ditch the black, they had such nice unique sweaters in the early 90’s.. those side panels just make me want to vomit… During the early 90’s and every team had a very nice basic horizonal stripe design.

I pretty much agree.
I do like most of the Bruins changes…but they certainly don’t need the new secondary logo placed on the shoulders — too cluttered a look for their otherwise classic jerseys. The secondary logo is great, but it should not be on the jersey.

5th inning, EE up for the reds, he fouls one back right at the Ump. On WGN they show the replay, once the ump goes to get ready again, he flips his hat around. It’s not a real hat, it was a helmet, you could tell. it stayed solid, not floppy like a hat would. someone get this, today’s Reds Cubs game.

In an interview that I heard Bonds give a long time ago, he said that the Pirates gave him #7 at first because his name was Bonds and James Bond is 007. He said that Denny Gonzales wore #24 at the time and the number opened up for him after Gonzales was traded or released (I don’t remember which one it was).

Looks like I got my answer on why the Vikings are wearing grey facemasks and the old horn logo design: they’re going to wear the throwback helmets during the Packers-Vikings game at the Dome this year, the same day Chuck Foreman gets inducted in the Vikings Ring Of Honor. They’re apparently wearing them now during traning camp to break them in.

Where is the NHL Shield? Also why do teams feel the need to stress that the stretch material is there? They could easily be the same color without piping identifying that it’s there, and it would look much better. It seems teams are just looking for a reason to add stripes somewhere.

As the Milwaukee Brewers continue to struggle on the road, it has raised some questions with skipper Ned Yost and other Brewers… Look at what infielder Criag Counsell has to say about the Brewers jerseys.

In fact, they wear the same uniforms in both places. The team overwhelmingly has chosen its navy blue alternate jerseys over the home white and road greys, because the alternates are made of a lighter, cooler material.

I promised pictures from the game, but I am unable to deliver, as my friend left the camera in the car. We were watching from next to the visitor’s bullpen in Safeco, and we were pretty much the only people watching Dinardo warm up. First off, none of the Athletics had the MLB logo on the back of their hats. Secondly, most of the players were wearing real stirrups, but Dinardo was not. We heckled Dinardo while he warmed up, most of the time about his fake stirrups, but I also told him that has pants were “all wobbly” at the bottom because he wasn’t wearing real stirrups, and pointed out that his pitching coach was wearing real stirrups. Safeco is pretty strict about taunting and heckling, so we were being decently polite and not vulgar. After he got done warming up, he walked straight back at us, and then tossed the ball over the fence to me. I have to thank UniWatch for my only MLB baseball. Dinardo then gave up 6 in 3 innings.

Regarding the M’s-A’s throwbacks…
The good: M’s jerseys and numbers, accurate helmets; A’s jersey’s, white coaches caps.
The bad: Both teams wore belted pants as opposed to waistbands, the M’s wore names on their backs (I don’t think they had them in ‘77); A’s names appear to be arched as opposed to horizontal.

Iraq started the Asian Cup (soccer) wearing a mishmash of jerseys, some with the flag (in different sizes) and some with the federation badge, some with names on the back, some without, and also 2 or 3 different fonts…
At some point, they actually got uniform uniforms and ended up winning the whole damn thing!

The Mariners have always had names on the back of their regular-season jerseys. In the days before dedicated BP jerseys, the M’s spring training uniforms were identical to their regular season ones, with the exception of the name over the player’s number on the back; as most of the baseball card photos were taken during the spring, they don’t feature names on the jerseys.
Majestic doesn’t produce the double-knit waistband/belt, and apparently they’re either unable or unwilling to outsource the waistband to someone else (perhaps because of their exclusive deal with MLB). The M’s did a similar Turn Back the Clock day back in 1997 vs. KC, complete with waistbands, and I believe they went with Ebbets Field Flannels. I agree the belts were disappointing, but I think they should get some points for getting the Mariner Moose in a ‘77 uni too.
The Pilots game last year was in Seattle, vs. Detroit on July 9th.

Yeah Vince, if the NFL had the same standards as Cycling, Shawne Merriman and Shaun Rogers wouldn’t have missed four games for steroids, they’d have been gone for two years. That’s eight times as long. Cyclists are tested more often for more drugs and doping methods with much longer penalties. So yes, lets make stupid jokes about the doping cyclists. They caught three guys out of a starting field of over 180. The sport is trying harder to clean up their act than any professional sport in the world and attitudes like yours where everyone is a dirty doper, when most aren’t, are only making things worse. So unless you are actually going to say something concrete and fact based, how about you just keep your mouth shut about a sport you, apparently, don’t comprehend.
