First, another gigantic jersey sighting, this time in San Diego, where a huge Tony Gwynn jersey drapes over the side of the County Administration Building in honor of Gwynn’s entrance into the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend. I wonder if this company made the uniform. (Thanks to Chris Coleman for the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXL heads-up.)
Second, I know we all love Saltalamacchia, but this guy deserves some major props also. — Vince

That Gwynn jersey looks alot better than the throwbacks the Padres attempted a while back. The number font is actually correct.
I would have loved if the Pirates ran that guy’s name out onto the black undershirt and down his arms. BTW, I can’t stand that ‘7′ the Pirates use. It looks like a truncated ‘2′.

Last night the Orioles and Yankees finished a suspended game, the O’s wore home white. 20 minutes later, when the regularly scheduled game started, they switched to black and those “O’s” hats. Was that really neccesary…

The great thing about that “Vanbenschoten” nameplate is that his surname is actually “Van Benschoten” — two words, space in between. But I guess they didn’t have room for the space. Somehow this epitomizes everything wrong with the Pirates, no?
#4 by Mark in Shiga on 07.28.07 9:34 am |
They should make the “van” in smaller letters, it being a prefix just like “de” or “la”, etc.
(Of course, I think they should dump the names altogether, or at the very least make them small and thinner like the Braves do. Full-sized name lettering looks ugly. Doubly so on vest jerseys where there’s less room around the shoulders.)
#5 by DJ on 07.28.07 9:43 am |
yeah i’m fine with that guy as long as the phillies get to face him every night
#6 by stan aka the took on 07.28.07 9:46 am |
i can’t even pronounce that name no less spell it. poor guy i can only imagine his school days (i too suffer from “lets see how bad we can butcher his last name” syndrome). yeah the 7 does look a little weird but i normally love the rest of the pirates jersey from the colors, numbers… now if they could only spring some cash for the sleeves then i would truly be in nirvana.
#7 by Stuby on 07.28.07 9:56 am |
I remember the case of Ed Vande Berg from the 80s. I think the back of his jersey was ‘vande BERG’ but I couldn’t find visual evidence.
Here is a shot of 3 of his baseball cards with his name represented 3 different ways.

So we had a Van Benschoten and a Vanden Hurk pitching on the same day. Very nice.

I’d rather they just run him, Armas, and Torres out of town. :p

There’s probably some obscure fine-print MLB rule stating that you have to finish a game in the same unis you began the game in, which would explain the white, presumably, and the O’s always wear their black alts at home on Friday.
In short, no, it wasn’t necessary at all, but these are the Orioles we’re talking about.

As far as the “long name” crowd goes, I always liked the way Red Schoendienst’s nameplate curved from ribcage to ribcage… (I know it’s a BP jersey, but the nameplate treatment was the same on his “game” unis as Cardinals’ manager.)
Fortunately, when Red was a slender second baseman with the Cardinals, they didn’t have nameplates!
#19 by Mike Engle on 07.28.07 11:41 am |
Did they bother making the front of the giant Gwynn jersey, or is it just one sided?
#20 by Jim on 07.28.07 11:45 am |
On the bright side … at least if they’re going to mess up, they did it consistantly … what kind of jersey is that, anyway? Looks more like a Tigers font for the number … and nobody-specific’s font for the name.

CONTADOR WILL WIN THE YELLOW JERSEY!!! What an amazing effort by all three of the riders in the general classification (Alberto Contador, Cadel Evans, and Levi Leipheimer).

NBA summer league question - anyone know where we can get those jerseys/shorts? i can’t seem to find them offered in the nba shop. you’d think they’d sell these.

I love old photographs and think some others here do as well. Shorpy.com have some great ones and while there are not a ton of sports/uni related ones you can find some gems like this one and this one. If you check the site look for the sports/recreation link on the right side.
#25 by RefUni on 07.28.07 12:34 pm |
Have you seen the Nike jerseys used by International teams? They’re just as bad.
In short, Nike and rbk should have stuck to whatever sports they were good at, and left hockey to CCM.
#26 by Taylor on 07.28.07 12:41 pm |
This doesn’t relate to anything that’s been stated yet, but I just read on espn.com that Nike has suspended Michael Vick without pay and Reebok isn’t selling Vick jerseys for the time being. For once, I give Nike props.

They can make the Gwynn jersey as big as a building but still can’t get the hat fucking right.

Looking at world soccer, where Nike and Reebok go head-to-head, show Nike winning the design competition hands-down.
As bad as Nike’s college football designs have been, their soccer kits are beautiful. Reebok, on the other hand, forces all their teams into ugly templates that promote Reebok over the team’s identity.
So yes, I do say with confidence that Nike would have done a better job with the NHL’s redesign.

I was at the Angels and Tigers game last night, I found 2 interesting things.
Halos catcher Mike Napoli has a red helmet with a black neck guard sporting the teams logo.
Also, with the sleeveless home jersey, the Majestic logo is on top of the shoulder, sideways.
These things just struck me as odd.

DJ, seriously, you took my comment. “I’m fine with that guy if the Phillies get to face him everyday.”
I went to that game last night, and from the first base line, it looked like a blur on the back.

I believe I read they want to find someplace to display it at Petco.
#36 by Kate on 07.28.07 2:46 pm |
There is a reason that Van Benschoten is called “Johnny V.” When the Rockies were in Pittsburgh last week the TV announcers took to calling him “Johnny V.” as well because both Drew Goodman and George Frazier couldn’t pronounce the name. It’s not that difficult once you hear it. If only they’d send him back down while tweaking his mechanics….

I’ve heard rumors that many schools will wear the swifts full time next year. Thank god for michigan signing with adidas, they have supplied very nice sweaters to Notre Dame and Wisconsin.

A’s log: Sunday will be a Mariners Turn-Back-The-Clock game, back to the team’s first season in 1977. Both teams will wear vintage 1970s uniforms. For the A’s, that means their vibrant green and gold attire. Asked where he was in 1977, Geren said high school. “Long hair, angel flight pants, polyester shirts, polyester pants, platform shoes, mood rings, pork chop sideburns — those were the days,'’ he said.

#62 by My Name is Not Earl on 07.28.07 7:18 pm |
FWIW, I’d love to see Gwynn with the Jheri Curl and Ripken with his mid-80s look, with all kinds of hair sticking out from underneath his Bird Head cap. But we all know that they’re going to be depicted as they were toward the ends of their careers.

#78 by Mike Engle on 07.28.07 10:04 pm |
I’m a future Montreal resident and a former Habs fan (haven’t consistently watched hockey since the lockout, but that will change soon), I am NOT worrying about the new uniforms. The Bruins look even better with the template (by defying the template, of course), and the RANGERS’ baldric word-mark is slightly more vertical due to the template. Since the Canadiens actually have a logo, their new look will hardly look like one. I am personally praying for a lace-up collar, just like in the late 50’s.
