George’s Favorites? Ya(n)da, Ya(n)da, Ya(n)da

WRHS 021

By Vince Grzegorek

While my esteemed boss used up all the Uni Watch frequent flier miles on trips to St. Louis, Toronto, and his vacation, I was left in charge of the blog and with the task of foraging for stories only as far as my trusty Dodge Stratus would carry me. That didn’t turn out to be a bad thing, though, since I ended up hot on the trail of some archived uniforms nearby at the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland.

A quick backstory: While browsing through the searchable collection of the WRHS, I came across nine uniforms from around 1920 that weren’t on display. There were no pictures, just a short description of the color and text on each one. My interest piqued, I got in touch with Scott Longert, Associate Curator for Sports History, and asked if I could come down and have a look. He was gracious enough to say yes and spend some time with me last Friday. (All photos courtesy of the Western Reserve Historical Society, of course.)

I wasn’t sure what I was going to find when I got down there. These jerseys were close to 90 years-old and were from amateur sports leagues, so it was possible that I would walk in to discover torn and tattered pieces of fabric, or faded remnants of what had once been great uniforms. All I had were the brief descriptions and the fact that the pieces were made by the Favorite Knitting Mills, a company that produced a ton of uniforms during the period and sponsored many more amateur teams, including the Favorite-Knits, a powerhouse of early-1920s football.

My worries were soon assuaged as Scott unveiled the collection donated by George and Ann Yanda in 1999. The jerseys, which belonged to George’s father, also named George, were in outstanding condition and provided a brief survey of early semi-pro and amateur attire for both basketball and football.

In almost every case, the team was either playing for or sponsored by a local Cleveland company. There was the “Fry Marvel” jersey, which had a nice little twist with inverted coloring on the letters and background on the front; the “Meter Lab” jersey, which looked almost as sharp as any sweater you would buy in the mall these days; the “Victory Auto Service” jersey, which almost screamed “Badass”; , the “Illuminating” jersey, the most boring example of the bunch; the “ChaLmps” jersey, which had a gorgeous design; the “Circles” jersey, which was the only one to have a last name on the back (as you can see in the lead photo); and the “Suchan Alleys” jersey, which had a beautiful-looking font on the front and back.

The prize was to be found, however, with two inconspicuous but beautiful football jerseys that had just a simple “I” on the front. After chatting with George Yanda about his father’s career, I found out that George Sr. played for the Cleveland Indians football team, which played in both the early NFL and the American Association of Professional Football. So these jerseys were probably worn sometime around 1922 or later when the Indians merged with the Canton Bulldogs to become the Cleveland Bulldogs.

As I chatted with George about his father’s playing days, times of little pay and a lot of travel, times detailed in books like Pro Football’s Rag Days, it was amazing to know I had seen the uniforms sitting right in front of me, and it was even more amazing to see how incredibly well-preserved they were. Stored in a basement for decades, and then stored at the Historical Society for the last 8 years, the jerseys can now see the light of day, and we can get a full-color glimpse into those Rag Days.

Tangential Bonus Material: Unfortunately, the jerseys I viewed are not on public display, but the WRHS still has plenty of amazing things, including the restored Chief Wahoo from the top of old Municipal Stadium (with beautiful striped stirrups just for Paul). Also, Scott tells me that there will be a major Cleveland Indians exhibition next summer that will collect photos, uniforms, and artifacts from the team’s extensive and storied history. Stay tuned for details. And finally, the Western Reserve Historical Society has a baseball speaker series running in August that will include talks by Cleveland’s VP of Public Relations, Bob Dibiasio, and former sportswriter, Burt Graeff.

Uni Watch News Ticker: That mysterious guy Paul has sent along a couple more contributions: First, my Ohio State Buckeyes beat Michigan again in this rating of college football uniforms; and second, the Long Beach Armada had planned a Michael Vick jersey bonfire, but had to cancel. Now, you can exchange a Michael Vick jersey for a free ticket on Animal Awareness Day, and then use the jersey as a pooper scooper or wee-wee pad… Curtis Granderson respects uniform history (thanks to Bill, no last names, please)… How often do you see an athlete advertise for another sport? Well, Ben Curtis just might be the most blatant example ever. “Go NFL!” (a teal deal thanks to Alexander Collazo)…Roger Faso passed on a great photo gallery of a game played to historically accurate uniform standards (except for the shoes)… A nice piece on Manny’s barber and the “LMontro 99″ wristbands sent along by Chris Flinn… The new 125th anniversary logo for the International League looks very spiffy, and very Scott Turner-esque (solid assist by Doug Brei)… An article on South Africa’s new Rugby World Cup jerseys can be found here (hard-hitting thanks to Josh Rubin)… Majestic will become the official outfitter of Minor League Baseball starting at the beginning of the 2008 season according to Matt Hoffman… A Uni Watch shout out to Ryan Finley, who gave a nice shout out to Uni Watch in this azstarnet.com blog entry about Arizona’s uniforms (thanks to Chris Pastore)… Matthew Linder alerted me to this Ebay listing for a Cleveland Lumberjacks jersey that he called “amazing”. I can think of a few other descriptions as well.

Did anybody watch the cubbies game last night. The second baseman for the Cardinals was the best dressed MLB player of the year so far. Anybody got a screen grab?

No, but there’s this.

There’s no link to the 125th anniversary IL logo.

May beloved Cardinals made the top 15. It must suck to be a UK fan when “Little Brother” is beating you in everything including uniforms….

whoever put that college football jersey list together is on crack!

Nice! Thanks Natron!

Just added the link… sorry.

Now that we can see it, we can see that it’s another of Paul’s bugbears. It’s the 125th season, not the 125th anniversary.

No, he’s a fourteen year old USC fan on crack. Get it straight.

How often do you see an athlete advertise for another sport?

the late Payne Stewart and his weekly tribute to th eNFL, wearing colors and logos of the team closest to that weeks event.

Ok, I have a question guys. My wife bought me a batting practice jersey from this year’s MLB All-Star game. I love the National logo on the front of them. Anyways, I am a big fan of the Rockies, so she got me a Matt Holliday jersey, but when I got it yesterday, I got a National League jersey with Holliday and a number 5 on the back, but a Toronto Blue Jays patch on the sleeve!!! I am guessing they got this confuse with Roy Halladay, but shouldn’t they have known that Toronto was in the American League? What should I do? Keep it or ask for a new one to correct the error. I kinda torn because I want the Rockies logo on it, but I also like the mess up. Kinda cracks me up. Any comments are welcomed and yes, I know, the BP jerseys are not very popular here, so please be nice to me! HAHA!

Also, the list of college football uniforms is a joke. The all white Texas is one of the most boring and bland uniforms of all time and they were a white mesh top still. Horrible unis. Also, FSU number one and Florida two? He must live somewhere in the Sunshine State because just for the fact that UF wore the orange sleeves one time should drop them. At least he mentioned them. Also, no mention of Oklahoma, which is a very classic look or any other simialr unis.

Michael Vick jerseys are marked down from 70 bucks to $10 here in ATL. My friend and I have already started our Halloween costume planning, which includes the jersey, a sombrero, water bottle, and her dog.

Get ready for the Joey Harrington experience..

Actually Vince - Michigan, Ohio State & Florida all tied with a 37. Michigan and Ohio State have identical grades of 10, 10, 9, 8 while Florida has a grade of 10, 9, 9 9.

Great post, Vince! I hope, for his sake, that the angry pubescent from yesterday took your advice and stayed away.

Damn, that’s a great idea!!! All you need is a strip of fabric that can be attached to look as if it is pealing off the back of the jersey with MEXICO in cheap iron-on letters…

Florida beat OSU in something else? Shocking!

Um, no. Not even close to being the real thing.

“This was a concept someone on the Orange and Black boards came up with based on that video using the EDGE templates.”

The design was based on the jersey behind Gagne in the video. It is NOT the final product.

Yeah, that’s the same pic we’ve seen before.

It doesn’t suck, but not enough orange and too much black.

They officially unveil on Sept 16. I’ll be going.

Seems more like he’s got a hard on for the SEC. Brian had it right. Florida and Florida State, are you kidding me?? And maybe it’s just because I don’t like red, but UGA, Louisville…not that great. And the only way Florida should be on the list is if they use their throwback “F” helmets. Script “Gators”…eh.

Where’s Texas A&M? Arizona? OU?

I know I’ve become overly obsessive when I noticed the Chief Whahoo sign has his stirrups backwards.

“My name is Dwight, and I have a uni watch problem.”

I have a very important Vick-related question…

Every year at our fantasy football draft, I wear my Ron Mexico jersey. In light of his recent allegations, would that be considered in bad taste? ;-)

The guy deducted points from Penn State for not having a logo on its helmet and lack of a third jersey. He also gave additional points for douchebag merrit stickers, and was only prevented from ranking Lousiville in the top ten by their lack of football tradition.

Here’s what he said about Notre Dame;

They’ve had the same jerseys forever.

No, they have not, They wore Green in the 70’s, Jerry Faust had them in Royal and Yellow (with names on the back no less), then Lou Holtz put them back in Navy Blue in wait for it, 1986. Hardly forever.

However, in the past decade they have made some changes that have helped to improve the jerseys over time.

More bull shit. Addidas put them in those stupid gold side pannels on them for a season or two, but other than that, pretty much the same since 1986.

A new green alternate jersey.

A statement too preposterous to ridicule

He included Georgia Tech and Kansas (neither has bad uniforms) at the expense of UCLA, Oklahoma, and Nebraska and claimed that tradition was an important part of his methodology.

Let us never speak of this again.

I love the kleenex logo on the Lumberjacks jerseys. Is that where you are supposed to wipe the blood off your face after a good check?

Send it back!!! Errors like that are meant for baseball cards, not actual jerseys!

Definitely send it back.

Having worked in a jersey-customizing place, if we made a mistake with anything stitched on, we’d replace the entire jersey. Once it has been sewn, you can tell if the sewn-on piece is removed.

And you had to send back the jersey with the error to get a new one. ;o)

from yesterday…

-At the Reds game tonight, they showed video of Jim Maloney’s no-hitter against the Cubs in ‘65, and I swear the Reds had their names below their numbers, but I can’t find any photos of the back of the jersey online. Can anyone help? Did I see right?

man! half of the wrhs shirts i would wear with a pair of cargo shorts or jeans! i think A&F may have stole those designs and are currently selling them!

thats a great idea! if i could add to it?
1. create business cards with just the word “HERPES” on it, and pass them out to people at your halloween parties. (as though you are giving people herpes and it will go along with the sombrero/ron mexico theme)
2. you gotta whip the finger to everyone too!

oh, and have you copywritten that idea?

i was gonna buy a kelly green blazer and affix the augusta national patch i got on ebay. go as a masters champ… going as woody hayes is on the back burner too…

“My name is Dwight, and I have a uni watch problem.”

dwight, what are you talking about?!? there is no such thing as a uni watch problem.

Every year at our fantasy football draft, I wear my Ron Mexico jersey. In light of his recent allegations, would that be considered in bad taste? ;-)

i say no. my opinion is if he made a mistake (in this case dog fighting) based on poor judgement from a chemical like drugs or alcohol then yes it is in bad taste.
but this outfit was a business. his vick kennels enterprise and his bad newz kennels enterprise (which strictly bred presa canario, pit bull and rot weiler dogs) shows that there was a concerted intent to at least raise and breed dogs which are historically the dogs used in these fights.
there are some good new vick dog related shirts on ebay now in case you need a new conversation for your fantasy draft.

Sure, Send it back, but post a picture of it here first!

Good Call! We all must see this!

Brendan Ryan of the Cardinals had it going on last night. Stirrups with stripes (the Cubs’ announcers made reference to it) AND the number 13 (personal fave). Good times.

Thanks guys for the help and Kings33, I will take a pic of it tonight and post it. It will be late tonight so I will either post it on todays discussion or tomorrows. Thanks again guys!

Also, I agree about Louiville. They should not be on the list. The all black are terrible in my opinion. I am a firm believer as well that the pant and jersey should not be the same color either. I think this is the worst look ever for a football uniform. The only exception would be white, but you have to have the stripes on the pants to give it a little color.

That Cleveland Indians neon sign is about the coolest thing I’ve seen.

Love the striped stirrups, and I want to order some striped stirrups for my little league team to wear (I need black stirrups with white stripes). I’ve found some that have what’s called “northwest stripe”, which is two thin stripes and a thicker stripe in the middle. I want three thin stripes, like these. Does anyone know where I can order some?

You can get custom striped stirrups here. Scroll down the page and you’ll see them.

first of all, Vince i can’t believe you went to the WRHS and didn’t tell anyone. I’m literally less than a block away.

Secondly, yes whoever made that list of uniforms is on something. sorry, i hate the shoulder stripes on Louisville and USC. and no way UF and FSU are 1 and 2

A couple month back, there was a link here with REALLY high socks for women. They were like striped athletic socks…but more like a Victoria’s Secret version.

Anyone remember that link?

I got an idea from that site. Fencing attire requires high socks and knickers. http://www.fencingph...

Custom stirrups for my high school team would be sweet. We have home/away blue and white socks, but stirrups would rock.

Also, the wikipedia article for baseball stirrups directly mentions the blog. Never knew that.

Hard on for the SEC? He ranked the same # of SEC teams as he ranked Big 10 teams. I’ll agree with him on Alabama (and only Bama) out of the SEC. Florida should definitely lose points for the orange sleeve fiasco. Any “Best Uniform” ranking that includes Louisville is a JOKE!

OU definitely a top-15 (way ahead of KANSAS!) Texas A&M…eh. Where’s Arizona??? Why on earth would Arizona be in this list?

Honestly, if you’re in Cleveland, DO visit the Western Reserve Historical Society. Do they still have the classic car exhibit, Vince?

As a Michigan grad, I feel it’s my duty to point out that Michigan and OSU actually tied on that uniform totem pole list Vince posted. I can excuse an OSU grad, though, for just looking at the numbers on the top and not at the total scores (both 37). :-D

All those IHL jeresys were game jerseys, not warm up jerseys. I remember the Chicago Wolves having warmup jersesy which makes no sense as they have one of the nicest looking jerseys in all of hockey. They do have some descent special event jerseys from time to time though. I especialy like their St. patrick’s Day Jerseys.

Whoops didn’t realize someone was already way ahead of me on the numbers thing. My fault!

I must correct a few little things in your mention as a die hard notre dame fan. There were also some other subtle changes over the years, especially when the school swithed from Champion to Adidas. Notre dame during the davie era (lest we forget) had the interlocking ND on the side of their shoulders. When Weis came on bored he changed it to numbers and also added the little shamrock on the collar. But I agree with you, the article is a bit well, crap

To the person who was trying to find the thigh high socks:

http://store.america...

This site is pretty interesting. They are having a bit of fun with nickname against nickname, logo against logo. However it’s claiming that this might be Canucks’ revised logo. The ‘C’ is ok, but Orca Bay is no more. It also lists the dates of upcoming unveilings. I’m sure you all have checked this site out before..

http://www.macmasks....

You’ve got to give a team (Chicago Wolves) credit for having the energy and the financial wherewithall to develop so many different uniforms for the team.

Now if only they could find someone who was not visually challenged to design one of these, it’d be really a lot of fun.

If Chuck Norris wore a baseball uniform, this website would no longer need to exsist.

If Chuck Norris wore a baseball uniform, this website would no longer need to exsist.

He would also break the homerun record in 2 seasons, without a bat. He would use roundhouse kicks.

Two things from today’s morning Lions practice:

-Players don’t have the Lion logo on their helmets this year in keeping with Rod Marinelli’s belief in players “earning” them.

-The lone media relations intern not wearing Reebok shoes walked around with the swooshes covered in white tape. Like someone is going to notice!

They have had a few that are a bit over the top to say the least, but I love the college-themed jersey and the 03 St. pat jersey is not to shabby either.

On the subject of logo mix-ups, I once went into a Lids looking for a Pirates hat, and found one similar to this that had the Pirates style “P” on the front, but the back read “Phillies”. I didn’t buy it but I pointed it out to an employee and he took it off the shelf. That would have been the perfect gift for a fan of crappy Pennsylvania baseball.

1. No love for Tennessee in the SEC?

2. Cardinals have the best stirrups in baseball.

3. Being from Missouri, no way does Kansas belong on any best list, unless the list is places that suck!!!!!

(OK that was funny, don’t get mad, it was a joke, I don’t hate Kansans, or Kansanians, or Jayhawks, but if you can’t take a joke, my prayers are with you!)

good thing there were no African-Americans in the historically accurate game game between oakland and san Jose. Gotta stay accurate of course.

Shame.

If Chuck Norris wore a baseball uniform, this website would no longer need to exsist.

He would also break the homerun record in 2 seasons, without a bat. He would use roundhouse kicks.

chuck norris doesnt steal bases, they come to him.

Being a native Bostonian living in MO, I’d say don’t hate too much on other states, MO isn’t all that great to begin with! lol

anyone else tired of this barry bonds record thing and will hank be there?
when people say, when a-rod breaks barry’s record barry will be there…

hold on there. barry doesnt hold any career home run record, in fact, at their current paces, arod should pass barry, then hank sometime next week.

Almost, ALMOST feel bad for a millionaire comic book guy who over paid for a ball.

At least Oregon didn’t make the top 15! That was about the only thing he got right. Penn State should’ve definitely been in the top 10.

Better old time baseball (and demonry).

I actually like the Sharks home, I mean, away (the white one) sweater.

YES. Especially being a Dodger fan. But I’ve come to terms with the fact he will break it. I’m just hoping it will be after August 19, when I visit Fenway Park for the first time. My attire for the day will be my 756* ringer (thanks Joe H), which has got rave reviews at the 6 games I’ve seen at the Ballpark in Arlington this year. I don’t know how the shirt will work if Bonds is at 758 by then or something.

The Islanders one is not bad, but they messed up on the patch. It should be 4 stripes to represent their 4 cups. I don’t really like the placement of the patch either.

Sorry.

I found these and I was like, some are nice but some arent that great but there arent any alternate jerseys this year right? I was just wondering since the person that made this made an alternate for every team

Some food for thought guys. I just read that Jarrod Saltalamacchia might be traded by July 31st.

Wouldn’t it be a shame if he ended up with a team like the Yankees that didn’t have their names on their backs???

Well, I gotta say: that list is atrocious and beyond anything that could be considered logical. The guy even pointed out that doesn’t even like Penn St’s look and thinks it’s boring, yet the uniform still magically made his list? That’s not respect. That’s called appeasement, kids. And BAMA being on this list under the author’s reasoning and scoring criteria is a complete joke. If I show up tomorrow and post a link to my list of the Top 10 Greatest Grandpas, then it might be as ridiculous as this list.

The Barney Rubble Hairpieces jerseys are a major improvement! The base Canucks jersey, all of the Stars jerseys and the alt Blues jersey work too. The rest should be sent back.

Sorta like when I traded my Jerry Rice rookie for a Jerome Walton rookie. They were equally valued at the time…

I’m not sure what whoever did this was thinking. They’ve got the Stars and Sharks in more retro looking sweaters. Meanwhile the Canadiens and Rangers in newer-style, ridiculous looking sweaters.

What size is the jersey?

#1 Grandpa

ANTHONY- the classic car exhibit is still open and is actually paired with a classic airplane exhibit. the science center has something on baseball until mid-September. can’t wait for the semester to start so that i can get in for free, and if i have a camera, take some pictures for you guys

I dont get all of the hate for Florida State’s unis. What is there not to like about them? The helmet is unique and classic. The colors go very well together. The only thing I can think of that some people might not like is the collar, which has been that way for as long as I can remember, and I cant think of any other schools that do it.

first of all, Vince i can’t believe you went to the WRHS and didn’t tell anyone. I’m literally less than a block away.

Next time I come down that way I’ll let you know and we’ll head to the Barking Spider or Parnell’s.

Todd— The Curator for Costumes from the WRHS said the same thing. These jerseys were sharper than most sweaters I see in stores.

Rick Petterson is not wearing his jacket! It must be hella hot there in queens today.
