A few years ago I wrote an article about for Fortune magazine about the history of the jet age. It included the following passage:
Since 1938, the federal Civil Aeronautics Board had controlled the industry’s routes, schedules, and prices, which were generally kept artificially high to protect the airlines. This left the carriers with little to compete over except whose flight attendants had the sexiest outfits (a trend begun in 1965 by Braniff, whose stewardesses would shed several layers of their uniforms during a flight, a routine known as the “air strip”).
I wasn’t able to work any other uni-centric comments into the article. And that didn’t seem like such a tragedy, because airline uniforms had always struck me as stiff polyester nightmares that were boring at best, tacky at worst.
This view is not shared by Cliff Muskiet, a Dutchman who works for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and is at least as obsessed with stewardess uniforms as I am with, say, striped stirrups. For years he’s been updating his web site (note the super-cool domain name — I may as well retire right now), which, as he straightforwardly explains, “is about me and my stewardess uniform collection.” That collection now includes over 600 uniforms drawn from nearly 300 airlines.
Clicking through Muskiet’s collection, it’s hard not to admire his hyper-obsessive tendencies. For each basic uniform design, he shows the uni on a mannequin and provides close-ups of fabrics, patterns, and badges (sometimes buttons and buckles, too). And just as I try to do with Uni Watch, he’s attempted to document some of the industry’s design history — check out, for example, this amazing page of old TWA uniforms, or some of the early-’70s American Airlines designs shown here.
Many of the stewardess uniforms fall into the same design categories as sports uniforms. You’ve got your classy simplicity (much like the Yankees), your characterless bores (Brewers), your occasional burst of slightly upscale perfection (Canadiens), your “What were they thinking?” disasters (Devil Rays), and plenty of other familiar tropes.
Such metaphorical connections notwithstanding, there’s also at least one design that’s directly sports-related: In 2006, Deutsche BA crews wore a special Puma-designed outfit, complete with logo creep, to help promote the World Cup (additional pics at the bottom of this page). And while not a sportswear design per se, the easyJet crew sure looks like they’re heading straight to the stadium (additional pics here).
It’d be easy to make fun of a guy like Muskiet — surrounded by his mannequins, fussing over his collection of dresses and skirts, providing grist for any number of Freudian mills. Ultimately, though, he isn’t all that different from you or me, obsessing over the visual details of his chosen field and enjoying the satisfaction that comes with collection and display. I prefer to see him as a fellow traveler (no pun intended).
Friendly Reminder: Paul’s on vacation. If you have questions, observations, or contributions, send them to Vince.
Uni Watch News Ticker: In a small item perfectly related to today’s post, the TSA has announced new uniforms for the TSO (thanks to J. Cutler)… Paul ‘enjoyed’ his vacation by sending me the following contributions: Coach Randy Shannon of the Miami Hurricanes has taken the names off the back of the jerseys this year to reinforce the ‘team-first’ approach… The new Duke football uniforms… The new North Texas football uniforms will be unveiled August 4th… An interesting Ebay auction… Why should new Met Ruben Gotay hope that he succeeds wearing the #6? Check the end of this article to find out (Once again, thanks to some guy named Paul for the contributions. Here’s to hoping he sticks around)…. In some corporate logo news, the Barclays eagle may be disappearing after 317 years thanks to concerns from its merger partner, ABN Amro (thanks to Matthew Hackethal)… The University of Michigan got a signing bonus for switching to Adidas, which may be the first time something like this has happened (mucho dinero thanks to Bill Tway)… Purple, purple, and more purple (a “don’t tell Paul you sent this” thanks to Matthew Strauss)… Mike Bonasai reports “The Greenville Drive honored neighboring city Spartanburg and Upstate South Carolina baseball history as playing as the Spartanburg Peaches. The Peaches jerseys were auctioned during the game to raise money for the Friends of Duncan Park, an organization out to save the oldest baseball stadium in South Carolina.”… Many, many people noticed that Glenallen Hill wore a helmet while coaching at first base for the Rockies after minor league coach Mike Coolbaugh died after getting hit by a ball this week (Bill Sour, who was at the game and sent me this pic)… Andrew Lupton found this patch showing the logo from the ‘71/’72 Houston Rockets… Many, many people noticed that the Mariners were wearing their batting practice jerseys for the second part of a double-dip against the Rangers last night… Todd Davis noticed that Ubaldo Jimenez doesn’t know how to wear stirrups… Finally, the new Sharks logo is out.

I agree… I like the shield logo and the new fin logo, but the main one screams amateur sport or arena football/lacrosse tacky… I’m holding out for the full uniform though, as that is the telling part of it for me… like the new Pens jerseys, I love the logo, but the uniform looks like an MLB batting practice jersey… yuck.
#20 by scott on 07.25.07 9:36 am |
Batting practice jerseys in a real game? That should be a no-no. Thankfully the Mariners lost and won’t be inspired to do it again.

#22 by Teebz on 07.25.07 9:47 am |
I much preferred the old fin logo. The new fin logo looks a helluva lot like the 1997 All-Star logo. And that shield is something from MLS, not the NHL.
Honestly, the logo is nothing without the jersey. I want to see it on a jersey before making a definitive statement.
#23 by Mark in Shiga on 07.25.07 9:49 am |
I don’t have any problem with batting practice jerseys in a game — they don’t look much different from the ever-popular colored alternates, and most practice jerseys don’t have player surnames on them, which is always a plus.
The 2007 template BP jerseys in particular, though, aren’t so good. Get rid of those side panels!

I don’t like BP jerseys seeing game time, but I don’t mind so much for the back end of a double header.
Figure that some of the guys have really put some sweat and dirt into the first games unis, so going to the BP as a backup set is fine.
But wearing them for a random Thursday game is lame.

The Pens jerseys are pretty awefull, especially right in the armpit where the gold sidepanel meets the black arm… What the heck? (keeping it PG)
The Sharks logo(s), first off, damn they did ALOT of logos, sheesh! The logos are fine, I was hoping they wouldn’t go overboard and they kinda did, and the orange all over isn’t a great touch imho… Also, the HUGE crest w/ the jumping shark, is extremely excessive

Figure that some of the guys have really put some sweat and dirt into the first games unis, so going to the BP as a backup set is fine.
Seems to me MLB teams would come with multiple sets of uniforms, thus eliminating the need for wearing BP jerseys But maybe not, as the players always seem to wear the same pants in the second game of doubleheaders. The game story said the players wore the BP jerseys because they are cooler in the Texas heat.

Most teams have at least two sets of each jersey. As a game-worn collector, I’ve seen tagging that indicates some players have had up to five sets. With most teams having at least one alternate jersey, there’s no reason a team should wear BP jerseys in a game. And as far as the BP’s being cooler, isn’t that what the cool-base jerseys were made for?

The was not unique to last night. MLB has no uniform undershirt that players must wear. This is most evident on teams who wear vests. The “official” undershirt, I think made by Nike, includes the Pirate’s logo on the left sleeve. Other brands that players wear (I think Tike Redman wore Under Armor a few years ago) don’t have or aren’t permitted to include the logo. And I think we all remember the Nike dot-matrix sleeves from last year. They didn’t have the logo. As a Pirate fan, this has bugged me for years. Not to mention, now we have to worry about Adam LaRoche’s logo peeling off, as mentioned last week. I also noticed Masumi Kuwata’s is beginning to peel as well.
And for the record, I’m a high school math teacher.

Those Preds Jerseys are really awful, the best is the T-Shirt remark made on the “hockey blog in canada” site, they truly look like a guy wearing a long sleeve t-shirt under another t-shirt.
Also, when did this whole Arm Pit panel craze get going? Its just such an odd design move, “Lets get as many swatches of color on these as we can”

No word on their jerseys yet. If they are following suit, the first preseason game in September will probably be the unveiling date.

Sage, your fine work has been posted for all to read. Great job!

I have been out of the Uni Loop for the past couple of days due to vacation, and missed the occupation inquiry. I am a lawyer, so feel free to add that to the list.

I was thinking the same thing. Now I won’t be able to get that song out of my head for the rest of the day.

And now for something totally different:
What is
this thing on her neck? And how is it legal with a rulebook that prohibits jewelry?
Occupation: Person needing a life with nothing better to do than post stupid questions & watch the rain.

Its not considered jewlery. Its a Phiten necklace. which is suppose to put energy back into your body, by use of liqud titanium.

Is there any scientific evidence that proves these things work? Seems a bit ridiculous to me, but what do I know.

The Smoking Gun has a funny pictorial of all mug shots where people were wearing sports jerseys. Check it out:

The Temple Uniforms are totally cool, and will bring back memories of them getting their ass kicked thirty years ago, as opposed to their recent memories of getting their ass kicked. But seriously, they look pretty neat, the checked pattern on the pants is real cool.
As far as tickets go, I don’t think they are selling single tickets to that game yet. It looked to me like if you bought tickets to any other Temple game, you “earned” the right to buy ticket to the PSU game. So buy two Navy tickets, then two PSU tickets. The Nittany Lion Club probably still has some in the Penn State section, and will get more closer to the game. Of course you have to be in the Nittany Lion Club, but it only costs $25 dollars to join.
By the way, I’m a sheppard.

And why can’t we get a logo on Temple’s helmet? I’m not a big fan of words on the helmet. Gimme a logo!

As another chemist checking in, I would have to say you are very likely correct in your scepticism of unfounded claims of “energy” and “liquid titanium?”.
I’ve got to come up with some scientific sounding mumbo-jumbo to sell to the masses and make my fortune. Anybody want to buy some nitrogen infused oxygen for boosting lung capacity?

Nitrogen-infused oxygen is great! Our hospital has had amazing results since administering it our surgical patients. They recover so much better than they had before we started using this well-nigh miraculous substance!

I finished my logo project. 510.
It’s my attempt to create an all encompassing logo for my 3 favorite teams; Golden State Warriors, Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics. The font is the one used by the Warriors during the 70s and 80s, the elephant is from the A’s and the shield and eye patch are from the Raiders. The seven stars represent the collective 7 World Championships won by the Warriors, Raiders and Athletics while they called Oakland home.
East Bay for life.
