Also, how would ESPN put banners up on that wall if it's the batter's eye? As for the strips of missing grass - yes, those are to replace grass on the field itself. I remember when it was unveiled and it was first noticed that he had a right-handed glove. The explanation at the time was that the sculptor had used a glove of that era without considering handedness and that it was in fact a mistake. The claim about Ruth having used borrowed gloves may sound reasonable, but it was certainly not given as an explanation at the time the statue was unveiled. So I'd say it's the sculptor's mistake, followed by a clever story to cover up the tracks. I think there is some historical revision going on here with the Babe Ruth statue.
