By Joe Hilseberg
Over the past month I’ve made two visits to the Sports Legends Museum in Baltimore. It’s like a mini Hall of Fame and is an ideal place to go if you want to wrap you brain around Baltimore/Maryland sports and get a feel for what they mean to the community. I also finally took the Camden Yards Stadium Tour. I took a lot of photos, but here are some particularly noteworthy shots from both the museum and the stadium tour:
- Babe Ruth statue: The interesting thing here is that the 18-year-old Babe is depicted with a right-handed glove. You would initially think the sculptor had made a huge mistake, but he actually paid very close attention to detail. When Babe was 18, he was still Attending St. Mary’s School in Baltimore and most likely could not afford a glove of his own. It was very common back then for teams to share gloves, which often meant lefties had to make due with a righty glove. Kudos to the sculptor.
- Center field ivy wall: I asked the tour guide why the ivy didn’t grow all the way to the top, and he said it was because that’s where ESPN like to hang banners and put logos. I’d rather have the ivy.
- Old-school pencil sharpener: This is in the press box — it’s just cool.
- Frank Robinson Club party room: Interesting that Angelos has chosen to depict Frank in his “Baltimore” road jersey.
- Oriole figurine: This is the original bird from the 1954 welcome float (a photo of which is shown above the bird).
- Greatest O’s jersey ever: 1966 style. Although you can’t see it here, the name is vertically arched! [Just like on Joe’s membership card. — PL]
- Brooks Robinson’s short brim helmet: Wondering why Brooks wore the short brim? Here’s his own explanation, which I pulled off of a site he posted on: “Back in the early ’70s, the Commissioner’s Office made it mandatory for anyone coming into the big leagues to wear an earflap on your helmet. If you were already in Major League Baseball you had a choice whether to do that or not. Of course, I wanted to wear the flap because it gave me more protection. … But when I got the helmet with the flap and put it on, it seemed like the bill was a little longer than my normal hat … and consequently when I went up to hit I could see the brim and part of the flap. It made me lose my concentration. I took care of it by taking a hacksaw blade and cut about 1 ½ inches off the brim and about half an inch off the flap. That’s how I got my short brim.”
- Four-year-old boy’s O’s mascot outfit: From the International League days. Love the socks!
- Sweet chenille bird: Also from the International League days.
- Mark Belanger’s batting glove: Check out the early Velcro strap.
- The Oriole Bird’s stirrups: Self-explanatory.
- Babe Ruth Brand Underwear: Surprised I also didn’t see any Jim Palmer Jockeys!
- Gordon’s Stores jersey: This was a rec league team, sponsored by a local dry cleaning operation. Al Kaline played for them — and for several other local teams — in 1951-52. According to something I found online, Kaline said, “I’d play a game in one end of town, then my father or uncle would drive me to another game. I would change uniforms in the car on the way. Sometimes I’d play three games a day. I never got enough.” He went to the Tigers right from high school, so these teams served as his minor leagues, which shows just how strong the baseball landscape was in Baltimore back then.
- Awesome sweater and cap: These belonged to “Home Run” Baker [so known for his league-leading HR totals of 11 in 1911, 10 in 1912, 12 in 1913, and 9 in 1914 — PL].
- There are too many cool Colts items to list here, so I’ve picked two favorites: the kickers’ shoe display and the sweet belt buckle on an early Colts marching band uniform.
- On the 3rd floor of the Museum is also Geppi’s Entertainment Museum. Not worth seeing twice in one month, but they did have Mr. T cereal!
Friendly Reminder: Paul’s on vacation. If you have questions, observations, or contributions, send them to Vince.
Uni Watch News Ticker: On the heels of yesterday’s fantastic analysis of uniforms in video games by Eriq Jaffe (and what a great job he did) we get the commercial and ridiculous side of the coin in this Xbox 360 trailer for NHL ‘08 that advertises the new Rbk Edge Uniform System. John Staton, who passed along the video, said, “The mind boggles.” My mind actually just threw up in my mouth a little bit… Paul Sipes passed on this photo essay of the atrocious history of US soccer uniforms… Here’s a podcast and article from Chris Murphy about a Narka, Kansas baseball uniform from the 1940’s… Tony Parker’s wax sculpture at the Grevin Wax Museum in France wears a Spurs uniform featuring the French flag down the sides. The real Tony Parker modeled the same awful uniform for this pic (Merci to Spencer Koch)… Interesting article about the preponderance of jersey rip-offs surrounding the Major League All-Star Game… Michael Boriotti has noticed that Milton Bradley is missing the MLB logo patch on the back of his jersey (watch the ’sliding grab’ video for proof)… In a completely unsurprising move, Nike has suspended the release of the new Michael Vick shoe (a Fido-friendly thanks to Greg Riffenburgh)… During the Tour de France I have always loved how the female presenters coordinate with the jersey they are awarding…Reprinted from yesterday’s comments section, the men’s USA basketball team scrimmaged this weekend, giving us a chance to see their jerseys in action… Scroll to near the end of this column to find out why Jason Richardson wears #23 (thanks to Richard Hochroth)…

Not to be negative, but regarding the New Jersey All-Star game, I believe that the league did not misspell the names on the jerseys, but the paper misspelled them in the article. Also, the penguins links are not working for me.

The Penguins links are not working because the team asked the board admin to pull the pictures. Let’s hope they don’t find this page too quickly…

Great photos, Joe! I’ve never done the Sports Legends Museum. so this will get me in there next time I’m in Bal’mer. They do have the best stadium tour I’ve taken anywhere. [The former-teacher in me has to correct your “lefties had to make due with a righty glove”. It’s “make do”. I give you a 99 on your report].

How lucky are we to live in the Rbk Edge Uniform Era?!
I mean, think of all those sad saps who were forced to watch thier hockey heros skate in inferior uniform systems!
By the way, am I the only person who is suprized to see the Return of British Knights in the hockey business? I mean, after the tanking of the Michael Jackson shoe I thought they were down and out. Not so. BK is back! Who’s BK? “RBK!!!”

Regarding Brooks Robinson’s earflap…
Did MLB recind the early 70’s requirement for an earflap, and then reinstate it later? The reason I ask is because Tim Raines didn’t start his career until 1979 and he never wore a helmet with an earflap (I don’t think).
#7 by Stuby on 07.24.07 8:35 am |
It may have just been the way he was wearing his jersey but in Jon Lester’s return to the Red Sox last night, it looked like his name and number were kind of rotated on his jersey.
Also, Lester has halved his uni number from 62 to 31.

Does anyone else think it’s odd to see the spelling on the front of the Team USA Jerseys as “U.S.A.” with the periods? I can’t recall seeing that, but it looks awkward to me…

The new San Jose Sharks logos will be officially unveiled later today:
“Fans will have their first opportunity to view the new look and secondary marks July 24 at 10 a.m. PST on sjsharks.com and merchandise with the updated logo and new marks at the Sharks Store will be available starting on that date as well.
“While the logo will be released tomorrow, the new-look jerseys will not be previewed until closer to training camp. All NHL jerseys will be altered to some degree this year as Reebok introduces new fabrics to help enhance player skills.”

Major League Rule 1.16
A Professional League shall adopt the following rule pertaining to the use of helmets:
(c) All players entering the Major Leagues commencing with the 1983 championship season and every succeeding season thereafter must wear a single ear-flap helmet (or at the player’s option,a double ear-flap helmet), except those players who were in the Major League during the 1982 season, and who, as recorded in that season, objected to wearing a single ear-flap helmet.
#16 by Natron on 07.24.07 8:59 am |
I guess that had never even occurred to me though… that at one point he did wear an earflap, but then toward the end, he didn’t. I assumed that players who didn’t wear an earflap early in their careers were grandfathered in the rule and allowed to continue without one, but evidently it applied to those who didn’t wear an earflap either.

I don’t see the outrage over the Pens jerseys. They have changed the design so much over the past few seasons, its hardly news that they did it again. Whats the difference between wierd gold stripes and weird gold side pannels. Neither look very good. Frankly, with all the excitement over last season, Crosby, Malkin, et al., I am suprised that the change was not more substantial. The changes they made probably won’t be noticed outside of UniWatch and hardcore Penguin fans.
I really thought that they would go back to matching the Steelers colors after the arena deal got done.
#33 by Teebz on 07.24.07 10:04 am |
Hardcore hockey fans (meaning me) want that yellow to come back. It matches not only the other pro sports franchises in Pittsburgh, but also the city’s flag. Vegas gold in hockey is stupid, especially when used as much as the Penguins are proposing to use it. The smaller stripes I can handle, but not the ridiculous panels and on the sleeves.

Which technically means that Julio Franco is not obligated to wear a single flap helmet since he started his career in 1982. But he wears one anyways.

#40 by Ken on 07.24.07 10:17 am |
Those shells need to be worn, they aren’t worn over a regular set of hockey pants, they cover up the girdle which looks like this. I wear a similar girdle and have different colored shells for each team i play for, helps make it easy to match unis, and the girdle has more protection in the hip area, and is very comfortable as well. This is not something new to hockey from rbk rather they are just making everyone wear them.
#41 by jesse on 07.24.07 10:23 am |
I don’t disagree, in fact, I emphatically agree. My point was I really don’t see much of a difference, better or worse, between the new and old jerseys.
From my perspective, I always though that when the North Stars took the “North” off their jersey that was the beginning of the end of that franchise (In Minnesota at least). While I realize that the Penguins switched to Vegas Gold a while ago, it always had the same kind of feel to me. Now that the team is in Pittsburgh to stay, I think that switching back to athletic gold (yellow) would be nice (if sub-conscious) way of affirming the fact they are Pittsburgh’s hockey team, rather than a hockey team that plays in Pittsburgh.
#42 by JJD on 07.24.07 10:27 am |
100% agreement, here. I watched the fourth quarter of that game and I couldn’t get over it. Otherwise they are quite sharp-looking.
#43 by Teebz on 07.24.07 10:32 am |
Not all players wear that girdle, though. Some still wear traditional pants, and the shell is supposed to be worn over the pants.
While I realize that this isn’t something new from Reebok, I still would be against wearing a shell over top of my pants that do little to aid in keeping me dry. And there are lots of NHL players who prefer their pants to the new girdles.
#44 by Natron on 07.24.07 10:32 am |
The North Stars never has the word “North” on their jerseys. They wore the green “N” jerseys until 1991, then went to the black with just the word “Stars” in 1992-93, and when they moved to Dallas in 93 they kept the same jerseys for one season before adding the word “Dallas” to it.
But your point stands… it was only 2 seasons after the change from the “N” jerseys before they left town, and Pittsburgh was in a similar boat up until a few months ago (although Penguin never left the jersey, unlike the Stars).

#46 by Joe Drennan on 07.24.07 10:36 am |
A pant shell isn’t cumbersome at all. Many teams at lower levels use them so they don’t have to buy new pants for all their players, rather give them the shell to put over whatever pair of pants they already have. Many guys I’ve played with had them and dodn’t mind them at all. If fitted properly, they fit snugly over the pants and don’t impeed any movment.
They also make great shorts for dry land training. When I was in college my school was phasing out our old NY Rangers syle pants for solid navy blue pants. They had a tone of shells left over so us players snagged em and wor ‘em for dry land. I must say, we looked quite snazzy running the bluffs in them things.
#47 by Ken on 07.24.07 10:40 am |
Yes I know right now not all players wear the girdles but with the new RBK Edge system isn’t the whole thing about the fact that they all will have to wear them?
#48 by Ken on 07.24.07 10:41 am |
Also, if I’m wrong and they are not forcing everyone to wear them, then i am sure that there will be pants made with the team’s colors on them instead of forcing players to wear shells over pants

I think that the colors are more important in Pittsburgh than the Penguin. In both instances, I thought it was a way to distance the team from its current location, and make it more generic, and marketable. The Dallas North Stars sounds stupid, but the Dallas Stars, you can see. In black and athletic gold they are Pittsburgh’s Penguins, in Black and metallic gold, they are just the Penguins.
Changing the uniform made it all that much easier to visualize for the prospective buyer and new city. Think of it like painting all the walls in your house white, and taking down your personal photos when you are trying to sell your house.
#51 by Teebz on 07.24.07 10:44 am |
Um… Joe, I never mentioned anything about them being cumbersome. I’ve used them in the past, and they don’t help with sweat evaporation over the old style of hockey pants.
#52 by Teebz on 07.24.07 10:47 am |
Well, they are trying to get players to switch to Reebok equipment. However, players have marketing endorsements that they are signed to, and the pants’ shell would hide the CCM pants or Mission pants or whatever brand that some of these players use and endorse. Again, I wouldn’t use the shell if it were me… and I certainly don’t have any endorsement deals. :o)
I have found that my pants barely breathe as it is, and by adding another layer, it would only make that harder. My pants are extremely comfortable, though.
#53 by todd krevanchi on 07.24.07 10:48 am |
Now thats a professional athlete. I hope more athletes follow suit with requests similar to this one when “selling” a number.

#54 by Joe Drennan on 07.24.07 10:50 am |
I know you didn’t mention them as cumbersome, but I figured some people not familiar with them might think they would be. As a goalie I nver had to worry about wearing them because for some reason teams never care if the goalie fits in with the team or not. In fact, for one spring league team I wore a Finland jersey the entire season because we didn’t have enough team jerseys to go around.
Why a Finland jersey. We discovered our jersey shortage at our first game so I gave mine up, but didn’t have an extra with me. The only jersey anybody else had with them that was big enough was a Finald jersey. I played well so I wore it agian the next game and so on.
#55 by Ken on 07.24.07 10:52 am |
but as i am saying these players who have deals with other companies and will continue wearing those pants will not have to wear a shell over them, they will simply wear whatever pants they like with the team colors on them as they already do

does anyone else see the pressing issue that the league has in this?
at softball, everytime i take my batting gloves out of my right pocket (shorts in our league) the pocket flaps out because of the velcro. everytime.
and the only reason i know is because i can see it.
so if players keep their gloves in their back pockets and not in their helmet (like most do), wouldnt the same be true? that the velcro would pull the pocket out? but how would you know unless someone told you? you cant see your own ass!
this is a uni-vio that players dont try on purpose.

IF they are not forced to wear the reebok equipment and are able to wear pants of their choice, they will be wearing those pants with no reebok shell.

They may have paid a lot, but players still have individual contracts for their own helmets, gloves, sticks and skates. Those particular pieces all have a different feel from manufactuer to manufactuer. I doub’t the NHL is going to mandate players go with one brand and that’s it, especialy when it comes to skates. In my experiance, you find a brand that fits good and stick with them. I’m a goalie and like Bauer skates. I think for forward skated Bauer runs wide, while CCM narrow. Then there are others like Mission and Graf out there as well as RBK. I’ve tried on the RBK helmet, while comfortable, if I could chose my own and get paid for it, I’d wear the Mission for it’s comfort to me and protection.
I’ll have to look into see if this deal is a mandate, or if players will still have the opportunity to wear what they find comfortable. Anybody else with infor would be great too.

capitalism baby… capitalism. i hope some make at least a donation to peta, humane societies, or other animal organizations with some of their proceeds… but i doubt it.
did anyone happen to hear bob valvano’s interview with new falcon joe horn on friday.
horn was trying to justify dog fighting.
not a quote but…
dont you think all animals should be created equal? (i think he meant to say should be treated equally but who am i to correct the great joe horn)
whats the difference if this nfl player does dog fighting or if that nfl player shoots a deer?
valvano was almost speechless… he got horn off the line and received a message from a listener about how when horn “had him on the ropes” he dumped the call.
valvano’s response was classic. not a quote but…
well folks, id rather not get into the whole philosophy of hunting and killing an animal for food versus training an animal solely for the sake of fighting it to kill against another who has been trained for the same purpose… just so you can wager on it. not to mention the grusome way these dogs were then killed when no longer usefull to the owners…
please joe horn…

Jon Lester made his 2007 debut last night and was wearing jersey number 31 after wearing 62 last year. I don’t know if there is a specific reason for the switch. No screenshot.
