HBO’s Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts Of Flatbush debuted last Wednesday, but I was in St. Louis at the time and didn’t get around to seeing it until Saturday. Aside from all the relatively familiar sentimental musings about my home borough (I teared up, right on cue, during the sequence where Dem Bums finally won the Series in ’55), there was a wealth of interesting uni-related material. Check it out:
- I wrote about pinned-on uniform numbers in my last ESPN column. But check out this shot, which shows prospects being evaluated either at a tryout session or during spring training. As you can see, some of them have numbers pinned over the pre-existing uni numbers. Kinda feels like the baseball version of this.
- Here’s a spring training shot. Note the two guys with the big “VB” on their jerseys, which I assume stood for Vero Beach.
- My favorite shot in the entire show: Jackie Robinson in an absolutely killer UCLA football uniform.
- There was a roughly 20-second sequence that showed the Hollywood Star wearing their pinstriped shorts (here’s another view). Oddly, the voiceover narration made no mention of the shorts — the script simply noted that L.A. was a minor league town until the Dodgers arrived. Very strange.
- Interesting shot here. Note that Jackie Robinson and Junior Gilliam are wearing sanitaries but no stirrups.
My only gripe: There wasn’t any footage of Burt Shotton managing in street clothes.
Travel Advisory: In the 14 months since this site launched, I’ve gotten out of town for a long weekend here or a work-related trip there, but I haven’t taken a proper vacation. That will change this Thursday, when I head off for — well, never mind where I’m heading. The point is that I’ll be visiting friends, road-tripping hither and thither, and not thinking too much about uniforms. My goal is to not log on to the site even once during the eight days I’ll be gone. We’ll see how realistic that turns out to be, but you get the gist — I need a little break.
But fear not — things will continue apace. While I’m gone, several teams of bio-engineered chinchillas, fortified on Balco-quality “nutritional supplements,” will be running on treadmills to keep all the wheels and gears turning. A crew of illegal immigrants, working under the dual threat of deportation and being forced to watch Lou Dobbs broadcasts, is at this very moment learning to mimic my writing style, so fresh content will continue to appear each day. And the major sports leagues have all agreed to hold off on any major uni-related announcements until my return.
The one major change is that Vince will be in charge of things while I’m gone, and will also be assembling Ticker material. So from the 19th through the 26th, if you’ve got a question, an observation, or a contribution, don’t send it to me — send it to Vince at uniwatchintern at gmail dot com. Vince will also be equipped with a Bat Signal-like communication device to get in touch with me, so in the unlikely event of an emergency (Jose Cruz Jr. going on the DL, for example, or Bruce Froemming splitting his pants), I’ll be brought up to speed.
I will engage in one major bit of Uni Watch business while I’m away, however: Next Tuesday, July 24th, I’ll be passing through Toronto and will convene a party upstairs at the Imperial Pub and Library. Festivities will commence at 8 p.m. — hope to see all you Ontarians there.
Membership Update: I want to take a minute to point out some of the really great details that Uni Watch art director Scott M.X. Turner has been working into the membership cards lately. When recently asked to do an old-school Patriots treatment, for example, Scott did some photo research and noticed that the Pats routinely featured wide-spaced lettering on their nameplates back in the day, so he matched that style. And dig this EPL design, complete with the logos on the numerals! It’s little details like these that have made this project so much fun for us — and, we hope, for you.
One thing I’ve noticed is that designs that looked horrible as actual uniforms look really great on the back of a membership card. In addition to the Blues treatment shown above, check out this and this (plus comments section stalwart Teebz wanted us to do the Islanders’ seasick typography for his card, which I’m sure would’ve looked totally boss, but the type was too tricky to render, so Teebz settled for an all-star design [based on this]).

Take a close look at the picture of Robinson amd Gilliam without stirrups. On the right, Sal Maglie’s 35 on the front of his jersey is a different font than the other Dodgers. It almost looks like Red Sox number font. I have noticed this in several pix, but this is the first opportunity I had to point it out.

On the Phillies jersey, the ‘P’ overlaps with the the top of the ‘h’ for some reason. Check it out here. Wherever else I could find an example of the logo, the letters don’t overlap. Whats up with that? Did they run out of room all of a sudden?

Great idea! But I bet that if you asked some of the original members – from the first week of sign-ups that chose the UniWatch generic background – they’d jump at the chance today to have a different membership card designed. Don’t get me wrong…
I’m a creative director myself, and love seeing the new designs, but I still think members are going out of their way (creatively) to have cards designed that are “wacky” just for the sake of being different. A boating number, or tour de france jersey are not what I would consider “traditional” jersey selections.
And before the entire UniWatch nation goes ballistic on me, I’m stating for the record that I’m not against it. I believe that everyone has a story to tell about what UniWatch means to them. To help, maybe they could (on the flikr site) give a little insight as to why they choose the black and white bars of a ref’s jersey or why Roger Bannister’s track top has meaning.
But if we’re gonna make this a popularity contest about what membership card jersey is cool and what’s not, I think were missing the point of joining UniWatch in the first place.

What’s the deal with the gold in the Sharks numerals? The font is an improvement but the outline is not.
Those Kansas jerseys…ick. I REALLY loathe Times New Roman-ish typography for nameplates and numerals. Block lettering (even with serifs) is ALWAYS better. That’s why I don’t like the Brewers’ jerseys.

What’s up with those KU football jerseys? The stylized font doesn’t bother me, but the “Kansas” wordmark does. Lots of teams have small versions of the school or mascot names above the numbers, and some schools (Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma) have full-sized names above the numbers on the front. But the size of “Kansas” on the KU jerseys seems somewhere in the middle. With the adidas logo, the Jayhawk, AND the odd-sized wordmark, the jersey seems too “busy”

Looks like the University of Tennessee baseball team is going to “ditch the black” in its uniforms. I’ve never understood how a team whose school colors are orange and white wound up having black as its primary color. Now if only the Mets would follow the lead . . .

I agree. The uniforms the Jayhawks have worn the past 2 or 3 seasons have been great. I don’t see why they need to change. Narrow the pant stripes a little bit, and they look like the Giants.

Maybe it’s been mentioned on here before but I’ll give it a go. I’m sure many of you have seen Arsenal’s new white away kit. The tag has some writing on it about Herbert Chapman winning Arsenal’s first title and some other things. However, all of the pictures of the kit that I’ve seen online make it just look plain white with Arsenal’s crest, Fly Emirates, and the Nike swoosh on the front. I stopped at a local soccer shop this weekend to pick one up for myself and the same writing from the tag is on the kit itself at a few places. And many times at these places. It’s in print that’s kind’ve small and it’s gray so in the pictures I’ve seen, it just hasn’t been visible but when viewing the kit from up close it looks very cool. I’ll post a picture soon or try finding one somewhere.

I believe that’s pretty common on soccer kits, especially ones unleashed to commemerate special occasions.
For example, north London’s best team, Tottenham, has a faint gray or silver inscription about their 125th anniversary on their new shirts.

I beg to differ, I seriously considered the “181″ from Lance Armstrong’s 1999 Tour win before settling on the “Edge 14″ card. To me it was about inspiration, and number 14 has always inspired me since childhood, even though I’m by no means a world class athlete. See if you can not be inspired by that video clip and figure out why some of my cycling friends have knock offs featuring that “181″ bib.

not a bad idea. on my niketalk board, popularity of the site over time developed the need for special “regional” forums when members wanted to talk about local places to buy, etc. these forums then developed into regional “summitt meetings” organized and run by the members with no real moderator. just members who got together and talked shop. someone would then take photos and write a review and post on the message board.

On one of Harrisburg PA’s news stations (WHPTV- CBS) last night, there was a story about why some baseball players wear their pants high and others don’t- the promo said they’d be asking local players if it was fashion or function. This whole idea about the membership card creativity has me pondering. I think it’s awsome that Paul and co. are willing to take the extra time to oblidge those who want something out ot the ordinary, but I wonder where they’ll eventualy draw the line.
The rules are there, but they’ve made exceptions because they’re nice guys, but also because they know the cards will look wicked sweet (that’s a tip of the hat to any Boston readers), but my high school hockey jersey looked awsome as it was maroon and burnt orange, with very small and condensed lettering.
If I asked nice enough would they oblidge? Possibly because it’s a simple design and all that’s needed is to find the right color sawatch, but if they do that, where do they draw the line.
It makes me wonder if it’s time Paul add a caveot to the membership pricing, customjersey formats not listed an extra charge? I won’t offer a dollar amount as I do not want to dvalue the incredible work that Scott is turning out. I know I’d shell out a few extra bucks.
OK, I’m done thinking out loud now - back to work.

After seeing the Sharks and Lightening logos, I am not impressed with the updates. To me they look like minor league logos. Their old logos weren’t the best in the league, but to me, they had a sort of classic look to them despite being 90s expansion teams. I felt the only updating the Sharks needed was to finish taping the hockey stick. I think some of the teams have too many hands in the cookie jar during the revamp and are trying too hard. Less is more. Look at the Habs or B’s or Blackhawks or Red Wings. No need to major overhauls because they got it darn near perfect the first time around.

I thought both teams needed complete overhauls (like Anaheim did last year). That being said, I think the Sharks’ new logo is a slight improvement over the old one after comparing them side-by-side. Tampa Bay’s logo is just as bad as the old one. A lot of these teams would benefit from following Boston’s lead when unveiling their new uniforms and stick to something simplistic and classy.

This logo is a bit more “compact” (as opposed to the current logo, which has the word “Lightning” in all-caps in the lower-right part). It might have been compacted in order to fit in the new Reebok jerseys, which are tighter, and have panels made of different materials for ‘flexibility” and moisture wicking.

First off, those MILB Star Wars unis are absolutely awesome. Sure, the placement of the stormtrooper and the Imperial crest are awkward, but who cares? It’s a freakin’ Star Wars gimmick jersey, so it’s awesome no matter how they draw it!
Hm…I hadn’t realized Olie Kolzig had gone to Mecha-Godzilla for his mask design. Still looks excellent after all these years. My favorite of the bunch has got to be Andrew Raycroft, with the Leafs of yore and the old Gardens painted on there.

cool sleeve patch here on this 1970 Indianapolis Indians jersey. They used to be owned by a group of 6,672 Indy-area shareholders, much like a publicly traded company, so they put that patch on there to recognize those folks.

If you have a special request, just ask — we take every request seriously (although there are some we turn down). No extra charge. In general, your odds are better if you (a) can provide a good rear-jersey photo, and (b) explain why this design is important to you.
And ALWAYS provide a “Plan B” backup design, in case we can’t execute your first choice.

I was really hoping the Lightning were going to ditch any word marks on the front the jersey. Just have the Lightning Bolt, like a superhero (Shazam). I’ve also thought the Bolt crossing Florida was pretty cheesy, im assuming they think its forming some sort of “X”, all dangerour like.
The new Sharks Logo is very cartooney and minor league, but its ok. I was really used to the old one now and was starting to like it. It just was starting to get that dated old look to it. I guess it will make a neat throw back in the future.

I think the point is that Paul and Scott take it on a case by case basis. This isn’t something with hard and fast rules where a line should be drawn.
Ask them to do your high school jersey. The worst that can happen is they say ‘no’.

Daaaamn, those shots of the Shell football glasses bring back memories. My grandfather was a huge L.A. Rams fan (and season ticket holder for a few years) who had a whole bunch of the Rams glasses. I drank out of them all the time when visiting my grandparents’ house as a kid. Sadly, he died not long after the team moved to St. Louis, and the glasses eventually disappeared too (sold in a garage sale, probably).
They didn’t have the serving tray, though.

Scott did have a rather funny response to the request for the Islanders’ Fisherman design, though.
“It would be one of the great challenges of all time. But I wouldn’t stand a chance. I have no working fonts for either the number or the nameplate letters, the nameplate itself curves, there’s extra trim that needs applying manually. If I had the font and had to curve it myself and add the trim, I’d take the challenge. But creating it from absolute scratch is just [f-bombing] crazy.”
As long as Scott can reproduce the font and it isn’t insanely crazy, I don’t think it would that difficult to make up a design from scratch. It appears that Scott enjoys the challenge. Just ask nicely. ;o)

The Cubs cathcer Coiy Hill who is a mid season call up has the same logo on his hockey inspired catchers mask. I should note, I don’t think there is a problem with the totaly awsome designs people are requesting and getting.
My thoughts came from having dabbled in graphic design, I simply know it take a minute or two to design each card if there is a standard template for the “typical” teams, but I know it takes a lil bit longer for the custom templates. I guess the designer in me doesn’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of Scott’s great skills as I know some like the cable car number would have taken me a good 45 minutes to recreate. As I think about it, a talented designer like Scott it probably took minutes. I assume that after some time we’ll have requested almost every possible template possibility and Scott will have a standard template for all these teams, making it a breeze to enter in any name/number combo.
Keep up the awsome work Scott. As soon as I can convienve my wife I need to spend a few bucks to have a card with my name and number on it, you’ll be getting a nice photo of my maroon and orange high school hockey jersey.

I’ve been in a video shoot all day, so I’m sorry I’m just getting to this. While that is a bad-ass jersey that I one day hope to own…it’s not a gamer. It is readily available to everyone. And the home version. The O’s have worn it a couple of times in the past 15 years on TBTC games…it’s from their international league days.
Plus if the jersey in that photo was a game, there is no way it would be in that pristine of shape! Good try though.

Great. The day I decide to comment again, I learn that Paul is going away for a very long time. That’s ok. Vince is more than up for the challenge of filling some rather large shoes.
I have to say, maybe I should have put a bit more thought into my membership card. After seeing some of the really creative ones–including Jeremy B.’s with Japanese characters–I am a bit envious. I could have–nah. I still would have chosen no-name and the Uni-Watch colors because I’m old-school, but it’s fun to dream.
Teebz, the Fisherman logo would have been so cool, but I like your current card as well.

Well, Teebz, I did take his number. However, I like the Uni-Watch theme, blah, blah, blah, so I stuck with that. Maybe next year, if we can update our cards, I might get something different.
Probably not, though.
By the way, the Sharks’ numerals are definitely not burnt orange.

Again, I agree, but that was the colour that they originally were promoting as their “third colour”. I’ve never seen an orange shark, but that’s their problem, I suppose. :o)
I was thinking a general Uni Watch theme, but since there was so many 66es that occurred when I was getting my card, I went with the best #66 I could think of.

Wait…do the Clippers seriously still wear pinstriped pants? That just seems really weird next to the new, Nats-inspired shirts. Is it that hard to get white pants with a blue and red stripe down the side?
The Clippers still wear the Yankee pintripes. They just added that alternate blue top with an alternate cap and changed the road grays to a Nationals font.

I wrote this response based on the #4 comment today which stated, “…to see a list of team designs that members have chosen for their cards - from the most popular to the least.”
I find fault in this because – as stated – choosing a jersey design was originally meant to convey a particular like of a MLB, NHL, or NFL jersey of your choice. If “popularity” was a criteria, I’m sure we would all choose some left-of-center, wacky design (see tour de france, referee, boating number cards).
I am all for creativity (I’m a creative director with a BFA from the School Of Visual Arts and totally love what Scott has put into the design of these wacky choices) but that is not the point. The point was not turning the membership cards into a popularity contest to be ranked from best to worst.

That number font is definitely closer to the Sharks font. However, I think the Jaguars colors are an exact match. White letter, gold (”burnt orange”)outline, black outline, on a teal (or whatever that color is) jersey/sweater.

I havent seen this anywhere but does anyone know if the University of Florida is going back to the 2005 football jerseys with the Gator head patch on the top right or doing something different since last year they wore the 100th anniversary patches?

I believe “from the most popular to the least” was meant in relationship to the teams being chosen. Teams that have been picked the most for membership cards would be most popular, therefore leaving unique designs as least popular. Which would be in contrast to your comment of people picking unique designs to be more popular.

Yeah, the league went to specific numbers and font either in 2002 or 2003. I know I have some game-worn jerseys from 2003 with the MLS logo in the numbers, I’d have to look and find any 2002’s, though.

good idea and it would be neat to see more of that. it was done with the capitals unveiling where a member covered the event, took photos and reported on the event.
although PL does put together the daily entry, it still heavily relies on our contributions.
it would be neat to see regional contributors to events like this that PL cant attend.

Don’t know if this was mentioned before, but during last night’s Phillies’ game, Harry Kalas went out of his way (on the radio broadcast) to comment on Jimmy Rollins wearing the high-cuffed look with new “spat”-style spikes. He said it must be his new Sunday-look, as Jimmy had worn the same last Sunday. Sorry, no links to what it looked like.
