Greetings from St. Louis, where I had a pretty amazing day yesterday. Took a preliminary tour of Liebe Athletic Lettering (I’ll be back there today with with an ESPN.com video crew), which was pretty mind-blowing — here’s a small taste of what I saw. If today’s video shoot ends up documenting even a fraction of the stuff I saw yesterday, we’ll end up with loads of great material. Then I got a personal tour of the Cardinals Hall of Fame and Busch Stadium from assistant curator Brian Finch (here’s a taste of that). And then I met up with a small but enthusiastic group of readers for a very entertaining Uni Watch gathering, the highlight of which was a show-and-tell session featuring the most incredible set of obsessive-compulsive uniform drawings I’ve ever seen (I’ll end up doing a full blog entry on these illustrations and the guy who created them, but this will give you an idea).
I’ll have more to say about all of that later on. But meanwhile: Last week SI.com ran a series of “Best Athletes by Number” photo galleries (they’re here, here, and here). Contrary to what a few of you thought, they didn’t rip off this idea from me — I’ve done plenty of articles about uni numbers but never a “best by number” column. But even if they had stolen the idea, it would be worth it, because SI’s photo galleries tend to be quite good, with large photos that most of us haven’t seen very often. In the case of these numerical breakdowns, I don’t really care about SI’s qualitative rankings (does it really matter who was the “best” player to wearing No. 37, especially when the candidates come from different sports?), but this batch of 101 photos featured an unusually high number of notable uni-related details. Por ejemplo:
- I’ve always loved this photo of Babe Ruth. Look how trim he was! Also, note the belt buckle squarely at 12 o’clock, a fairly uncommon sight for that era.
- Another thing I’ve always loved: the way Wilt Chamberlain’s head band was wide up front and thin in the back.
- Totally digging the stirrups here (big surprise). But note the black/white/gold striping on the cuffs and waistband — wouldn’t it have been better if they’d been gold on top, instead of on the bottom, to match the hose?
- Kareem’s name on the back of his jersey usually included a hyphen — but not in this.
- Look at that jersey texture! Ditto here. Goddamn do I miss natural-fiber uniforms.
- We’ve all seen Gale Sayers’s cheapo plastic facemask before, but it’s never looked more like a back-yard kiddie accessory than it does here.
- You’ve heard of high whites? How about all whites? Dig the Steelers-patterned wristbands, too.
- I was struck by how many of the NFL photos showed players loaded up with yards of tape on their arms and hands. You don’t see that anymore.
- The stirrups here are so dead-on perfect that it’s easy to overlook the yellow catcher’s gear — yowza! Must have been the Brewers, right?
- Great view here of Willie Lanier’s extra-padded helmet (which always kinda looks like a horn to me). And as long as we’re talking about the Chiefs, look how small Buck Buchanan’s uni number is here.
- Is that a zipper on Neil Smith’s hip? If so, that’s a first for me — never seen that before.
- Something else I’d never seen before: Check out the little “Bengals” wordmark on Anthony Muñoz’s socks (or is it on the tape?).
- Talk about a leotard effect — dark pants, dark socks, and dark shoes with dark laces. Please, gimme just a little contrast, will ya?
- We’ve often discussed Warrick Dunn’s habit of wearing a gold chain on the gridiron. Turns out he’s not the only one to have done that.
- How great is the little “U of M” imprimatur here?
- I’ve always found the close proximity of stripes and checkboard here to be slightly disconcerting.
- Look at the size of that nameplate typography!
Uni Watch News Ticker: Michigan is switching from Nike to Adidas, and I’m so broken up about it that I actually walk around laughing. … The Kansas City T-Bones staged their second annual Redneck Night on Saturday, featuring, um, inspired uniforms (additional shots here and here). Looks like the guy on the far left was cheating by wearing a cap-sleeved undershirt. … Interesting All-Star Game memory from Doug Simpson, who writes: “I don’t have a pic, but in 1998 Jeff Shaw was traded from the Reds to the Dodgers during the All-Star Break. His first pitch in a Dodgers uniform was in the All-Star Game. Also, Cincinnati was left with no representation, since Shaw was their only invitee.” … Yesterday I published Richard Craig’s All-Star Game FanFest report; here’s another one, this time from Brandon Davis, covering completely different ground — good stuff. … Would you believe that the American and National Leagues used to have separate resin bags (N.L., A.L.)? Daily News writer Jesse Spector took those photos at Cooperstown, plus his blog has recently featured good uni-related commentary from MLB players: Chris Duncan on pants and socks (scroll down to the bottom), and Justin Morneau on his NHL undershirt (ditto). … Think A-Rod would’ve slid at home if he hadn’t been wearing those country club white shoes? … The Sharks will reveal an updated logo later this month.

My wife even commented on how bad A-Rod’s white cleats/shoes looked…as the words left her mouth, a wide grin came across my face….”she has now been sucked into the world of uni-obsession…excellent”

Something else I’d never seen before: Check out the little “Bengals†wordmark on Anthony Muñoz’s socks (or is it on the tape?).
It’s under the (clear) tape. For a season or two, IIRC, NFL team socks had the team’s wordmark on them.

I was going to say it could have been the Mariners, but the Mariners didn’t have striped cuffs in that period (the White Sox only wore those for 4 years). Plus that catcher is definitely B.J. Surhoff.

Arkansas Tech is considering changing the name of their sports team. Apparently, having different names for the men’s (Wonder Boys) and women’s (Golden Suns) team was getting confusing. Early candidates in the online survey: Comets, Copperheads, Sharks and Terrapins.
Also, another SI.com photo gallery: goalie masks.

Sorry I missed the gathering last night. I’m still bummed about that. I did get to watch most of the All-Star Game, and I noticed when Jr. threw A-rod out trying to score from 2nd that A-rods’ cleats looked like over-sized clown shoes! They really looked too big for his feet!!
Oh, and the big talk here is him La Russa did not play his only Cardinal last night when it was bases loaded and the game on the line…I look at it as one less uniform to wash…sorry Albert…

A-Rod never wears white shoes during the regular season, but he did wear them at last year’s all-star game as well. If you go
here: The first two photos in the gallery clearly show him in white shoes.
I couldn’t find any shots from previous years, but maybe this is an All-Star tradition of his?

I, too, live in St. Louis and can’t tell you how bummed I was to miss last night. The ONE NIGHT in the past 4 months I had to work. Nice timing.
If I HAD gone last night, I would have worn a new find that I’m hoping to find out if it’s A) a not-so-uncommon oddity, or B) A pot of gold: While cleaning out my father’s apartment last week, I found a “Chicago Cubs/Wrigley Field” shirt with the 2003 World Series logo. Could this shirt have been released maybe 5 outs too early? Or, since it makes no mention of “National League Champions” or other type brag, is it a non-issue? I’ll try to take a picture later and post it to see if anyone has any further commentary.

Yes, Jeff Shaw went from the Reds to Dodgers during the All-Star break in 1998, but the Reds did have Bret Boone named a reserve to the team, so they were represented.

FWIW, black and white film, especially older formulations, capture colors in different (and sometimes bizarre) ways. For example, some early films were only sensitive to the blue end of the light spectrum – so blues appeared to be white (very low contrast between the two), and reds appeared to be dark.
More modern B&W films are sensitive to more of the color spectrum, but very different colors could still end up having the same tone/shade in B&W. So…it’s not always easy to figure out what the real-life appearance was from B&W.

Looking again at that satin Cards jersey, wasn’t that for night games so the fans could see the players better in the poor field lights? Interesting how the birds on the bat look a lot like the Turn-Ahead-the-Clock cyber cardinals…
…and that zipper is huge!

Interesting comment from Chris Duncan on why no one wears the high cuffs on the Cardinals. I always thought it was because it was considered a ‘minor league look’, required to be worn by all from their AAA team down to rookie league. The only ones in StL who’ve worn real stirrups in the past 2 seasons were both pitchers (Jason Marquis, Anthony Reyes) The official standard issue socks have the knitted-in stirrup design [same as minor leaguers]. Does anyone wanting real stirrups have to buy their own, get special orders?
A-Rod’s white shoes DID look clownish. Jeter at least had co-ordinating gray ones. Last year several guys wore special white “All Star” shoes–didn’t see it as much this year.

I never knew that Liebe was in Chesterfield, MO. I probably drive past it at least once a week! Noticed on their color swatches that Cardinal Red looked darker than what the StL Cards use…but it might just be my moniter…

I’m much more of a Nike fan (shoe-wise especially) than adidas, so as a Michigan fan, I’m somewhat disappointed. Obviously, adidas isn’t stupid enough to mess with the home uniforms for Michigan, I just hope they keep the away unis simple as well. While I’m not a fan of the very noticeable differing materials on the away jersey, I have grown to like the wrap around maize piping since it isn’t over the top. I just don’t wanna see some forced three stripe design on the whites now that adidas is in charge. I also don’t wanna see them try and use some kind of side paneling like they did with Notre Dame’s away jerseys a couple years back.
I guess it makes sense with the three stripes on the helmet and the three stripes of adidas though.
It’s pretty likely the soccer uniforms will be a downgrade though, as adidas has been put to shame in the last couple years designing soccer unis compared to Nike’s work.

I don’t quite understand Paul’s “walking around laughing” comment. Whether you like Nike or not, adidas will almost certainly try to put 3 stripes on the Michigan jerseys, as they did with Nebraska and UCLA. Either way, I am sure it will be far larger than the small swoosh at the bottom of the v-neck.
Hating Nike while rooting for adidas is a bit like hating the Yankees but rooting for the RedSox. I understand the feeling, but it is hardly rooting for the underdog. Root for Russell or New Balance if you want to do that.

A few thoughts.
1 – The SI goalie mask gallery rocks. I’m a goalie and think goalie mask art should be displayed in art musium. When I had my mask painted I thought long and hard about what I wanted on it, wanting my mask to blend will with our sweaters. I’ll try and get a picture of the outcome later.
2 – The shot of Fisk with his perfect stirups, well, I am a Cubs fan and hate the Sox, but always thought the unis used in that photo were one of their better ones.
3 – Lastly, the picture of Red Granve in his unitard look. The earlier post was right about the older film not showing tones well. From seeing photos from musiums, I think the cleats were black, socks navy and the pants brown. I could be wrong though.

- A-Rod’s shoes were awful. White shoes just don’t look right with any team but the A’s (and they only look right there because I’ve never seen different).
- Didn’t notice Junior’s red shoes, but I did notice his red sleeves, wristbands, and batting gloves. Single color from mid-biceps to fingertips. Also reminded me what a fan of the Reds duds I am. Sheer excellence.
- How about Ichiro accepting the MVP honors while in street clothes? I wish he’d been in uniform for that kind of thing.
- Glad to see the Mets players wore the pinstripes and blue hats. I wondered what they would have looked like if they’d worn different combinations…
- Those minor league Redneck uniforms are amazing! Reminds me of “Major League”: “We wear caps and sleeves at this level, son!”

I missed the All Star Game due to The Police concert in Miami. Uni-related item: Drummer Stewart Copeland wore an Adidas shirt (photo #8 in this slide show). Not to be Captain Obvious, or anything, but I wonder if the white shoes are worn especially for ASG’s so players can have them autographed. Many players get pretty stoked about these things and a white shoe would be easy to have signed.

FYI – The Giants uniforms are CREAM, not Tan, and as a Giants fan, I must say that I love ‘em, they are traditional and unique, and hardly noticible unless lined up against a pure white jersey.
Also, why hasn’t Phoenix had an All-Star game yet? The heat is not a legitimate excuse, there is a huge convention center right across the street and the Suns stadium a block away to support the ancillary events in cool comfort. Just seems odd, given the fact that Phoenix was chosen as the MLB west coast home (they have an office in PHX).

Did it bug anyone else to see players from the same team (Ortiz and Manny, Jeter and A-rod, ect) have the ASG patch on different sleeves from each other? The patch should always go on the right sleeve (unless there is a non-commemorative patch/logo there) to oppose the hat patch on the left. At least thats how it always used to be for All Star and World Series games until last night. Figures that in the Giants home park equipment details were less than perfect.

Sidney Crosby’s new contract is uni-related. From http://www.post-gaze...
Crosby said that “it was important to do what was right for everyone,” but allowed that he had gotten at least one whimsical concession in the talks: A deal that translates to an annual salary-cap hit of $8.7 million.
Those digits are no coincidence. Not for a guy born on 8/7/87, who wears No. 87.
“I was right around that ballpark, so I said I might as well go 8.7,” Crosby said. “That’s my number, and it’s always been that way. It’s always been good to me, so, hopefully, maybe it will bring a little luck.”

I was struck by how many of the NFL photos showed players loaded up with yards of tape on their arms and hands. You don’t see that anymore.
It was rumored that Pittsburgh defensive lineman Ernie Stautner used to flatten tennis ball cans and tape them to his forearms back in the day.
And I got the Bob Lilly photo — framed and signed — as a Christmas present from my brother and family last year. Paul’s right…those Bills letters are huge and I don’t know of enough else who used that font, but perhaps the St. Louis Cardinals did…

Secretariat was a fucking horse, not an athlete. Geez.
Otherwise, I think SI did a credible job with their top-by-number list. Fourteen was particuarly good–Rose over Foyt by a car’s length. Good call, but it just as easily could have gone the other way.

Peter Budaj’s teammates apparently refer to him as Ned Flanders because of his religious devotion.
I was at least year’s Rangers/Stars game in Dallas. Lundqvist shut ‘em out on 40-plus saves — best goaltending performance I’ve ever witnessed in person.

I have a Tour de France uni-related matter. Someone posted that Discovery would be adding green to their unis. I went to their website – no sign of it and scoffed. Now that the Tour has begun, I see the green – all we need is ONE MORE team with blue and green… bleh.
Anyway, question is: why is Hincapie wearing red, white, and blue even in practice rides?

Remember earlier in the day someone linked to that pic of Ricky Henderson wearing those type of socks. They came about because in the late 70’s and 80’s the fad was to just show the stirrup part of the stirrup (just the stripe). These socks acomplished that withought having to wear actual stirrups.

NOT uni-related, but I know this a forum of sports fans who are “detail oriented”
Just read the SI.com article about Oklahoma, it reads, “The Sooners went 8-4 and beat Oregon in the Holiday Bowl to end the 2005 season. Records from that season involving quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn must be erased, the NCAA said, and coach Bob Stoops’ career record will be amended to reflect the erased wins, dropping it from 86-19 in eight seasons to 78-19.”
Is it fair to just eliminate the coach’s wins? Shouldn’t the whole season be wiped out?

ummm if the 8 games dont count how can you count them as wins for the coaching record??
By your logic since they should still count for the coach they should still count in Oklahoma history and for the players.
Why even punish them then if games with ineligible players still count???

I think his point was that the season was wiped out but the coaches record only subtracted from the wins side – if they went 8-4, then his point is that the coaches loss total should have 4 subtracted from it.

“The Sharks did not take altering their brand lightly, as the main logo has been one of the most popular in professional sports since the club’s inception in 1991.”

Paul,
The Gale Sayers plastic molded mask in question was made by Wilson. (Adams made a very similar white plastic mask but it only had one single vertical bar between the two horizontal bars) George Halas had ties to the Wilson company, which was also based in Chicago and the Bears used predominately Wilson helmets at the time. HelmetHut has a few articles and letters that give more details.

I don’t think that’s a zipper on Neil Smith’s hip in that Broncos picture. It looks to me like the strings from his shoulder pads or from a flack jacket (which are usually worn by QBs and RBs).
