By the time you read this, I’ll be on my way to St. Louis. Hope to meet all you Gateway City readers tonight at McGurks.
Meanwhile: The All-Star Game is tonight, so it’s very apropos that I share this note that came in yesterday from San Francisco reader and member Richard Craig. Check it out:
I’m out here in the Bay Area surrounded by All-Star Game hype. On Sunday I attended MLB’s All-Star Fanfest — the event for everyone who can’t afford to go to the game itself — and I stopped in my tracks when I saw a booth offering authenticated game-used uniforms. Obviously, these were a few years old [since Expos jerseys were included], but I decided to peruse them.
The old Expos jerseys were nice enough, but my heart went all aflutter at the sight of these old Braves jerseys with their gorgeous vertically arched lettering (despite the presence of one radially arched infidel). My favorite for a number of reasons had to be this one. Vertically arched lettering in general is a lost art, but arching the letters and cutting them slimmer to accommodate a 13-letter name is truly something rare to behold. It’s a shame we won’t see “Saltalamacchia” in this style.
It’s also a shame that the HR Derby will feature this.
Big thanks to Richard for his spot-on reportage. As an aside: As nice as the Braves’ vertical arching was, I always felt it was badly counterbalanced by the team’s use of nameplates instead of direct-sewn lettering. Look at the lettering on those Expos jerseys again — radial, yes, but so much nicer and cleaner without the strip of nameplate fabric. There’s really no good reason for any MLB team to go the nameplate route.
There’s also no good reason for a big league player (or, really, any player) to wear a pit-stained jersey design or history’s lamest cap design, but there they were last night for the Home Run Derby (along with Matt Holliday’s highly disturbing footwear). Seriously, is there anyone — like, anyone on the entire planet — who prefers seeing the players dress like this, instead of in their regular uniforms? What a joke. Hats off to Ryan H. and Vladdy G. for leaving their hats off — a huge improvement.
Okay, enough griping — I’m off to the airport. I won’t be near a computer for the rest of today or for most of tomorrow, so if there are site issues (spam-filtered posts, a spitting contest in the comments section, etc.), contact Vince at uniwatchintern at gmail dot com. If you have questions for me, it’d be nice if you could wait until later in the week. Thanks.

Membership Update: Please join me in saluting Uni Watch design director Scott M.X. Turner, who’s been slaving away on these membership card designs and has turned out some real beauties. Dig that Golden State trolley design (here’s a larger view) — gorgeous! Lots of cool new stuff to see in the membership card design gallery, which is a testament to Scott’s efforts (and, of course, to the generous support you folks have provided — thanks).
Uni Watch News Ticker: Good uni-related note regarding the Futures Game at the beginning of this article (with thanks to Matt Nelson). … Lots of notations on Dice-K’s underbrim (good spot by Andrew Heverling). … Interesting all-star note from Sean G. O’Shea, who says that the Mets players who appeared in the 1986 ASG had direct-sewn lettering for their names on their jerseys, instead of the nameplate treatment that the Mets were using that season. (The team didn’t go to direct-sewn until ’87.) “I remember thinking it was weird back then but had no forum to discuss it (thank you again for Uni Watch),” says O’Shea. Anyone got video of that game? … Steven Shoemaker has forwarded an oddity of note: a crude but, he insists, legit photocopy that shows Shaq wearing No. 1. Anyone know more about the circumstances of this? … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Check out this early catcher’s mask. … Also from yesterday: Really good graphic design analysis of the Caps’ new logo here — highly recommended.

God, the HR Derby uniforms were horrific this year. I really can’t remember if they ever have had a design that wasn’t either boring, or ugly. The bridge theme in the letters just didn’t work at all.

Although I’m more of a fan of purple and black, I dig Holliday’s shoes. My high school days as a purple clad Panther of Nashua High kinda resulted in me loving the colors, what can I say.
If NikeId had been around in high school, my cross country flats would’ve been some kind of purple and black combo, no doubt.
(That doesn’t mean I like the Rockies’ vests though. I’m pretty much of the opinion that any solid color vest in baseball is put to shame by regular white/gray uni color vests)

It would have looked so much better if all the guys had worn color coordinated shoes and sleeves as opposed to red ones Vald, Pujols, and Howard wore. the red and orange mix was terrible. I did love the fact that all of the kids had their dads’ jerseys with the names and numbers on the back. That was cool.

It would have looked better, true, but on some level, I’m glad they didn’t. It’s a sign that they weren’t willing to complete the visual effect of that travesty by getting new shoes for the event.

I HATE those all star hats! The best part of the All Star game was always seeing all of the teams colors that I’m not used to seeing…all of the players in their respective team’s gear…this is just horrible.
And I disagree with paul on the nameplate issue. It may look cleaner to have a direct sewn name, but the nameplate ensures a proper arch to the name. Now most teams that use direct sewing have the surnames in practically a straight line. Only when it’s a longer name does it start to resemble a proper radial arch.

I’m pretty sure the photo of Shaq with the #1 jersey was just a photo of him with the Magic jersey superimposed onto him after he was selected first by the team I vaguely remember seeing that photo around the time of the 1992 draft.

Last night I watched the replay of the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC match. A couple of things struck me as odd as I watched the game. The Fire play at Toyota Park but yet their shirt has sponsorship of Honda on the back. The other oddity I spotted was after the Fire scored from a penalty I noticed the fans behind the goal unfurl a huge Fire shirt. Nothing unusual in that but the big shirt had a huge Puma logo on it but the present day Fire wear Adidas shirts. Probably no one bothered to update the big shirt for the fans behind the goal.
I switched the home run contest on for a couple of minutes but then quickly turned it off as I heard them playing music through the PA system at AT&T Park, it sounded dreadful.

So I know it was mentioned here before, about Ortiz and Ramirez wearing wrist bands with the number 99 on it in honor of their friend/hair dresser, well looks like they went through the trouble of having them done in orange and black to match the horrible jerseys yesterday as seen here on Ortiz.

The worst part about everyone wearing those stupid caps is that I could not readily identify certain players. For instance, I don’t pay a heck of a lot of attention to the AL, so it’s pretty hard for me to identify reps for teams like the Royals. What’s so wrong with wearing regular team caps? Ugh.
Anyway, if they have to wear ASG caps, there is no excuse for a MLB cap to ever feature a whole word. That’s beyond bush. I would have actually liked to see “NL” or “AL” hats, in orange and black, written in the SF font (so long as it wasn’t on the horrific BP cap template). The player’s team logo could be placed on the back, where the MLB logo usually goes. How cool would those caps be? Is it really worth that much to MLB to brand itself on caps nobody wants to buy?

It is also the wrong bridge. The Bay Bridge is the one you can see from the ballpark, but they put the Golden Gate Bridge on the jersey. To me, the design looks like overhead power lines.
Also, the Giants lost major style points by stealing the Cub’s numeral font for the All-Star BP jerseys

Brazil is mixing and matching unis in its senior and youth soccer squads
The senior team started the Copa America in their traditional blue shorts vs Mexico and lost. Then they switched to white (usually worn with the blue shirts)vs Chile. But in quarters rematch vs chile, they tried the whites again and won.

Not sure if someone already discussed this, but the home run derby seems to have recently used the jersey number font of the home team (the sorta-cool Pirates year comes to mind). So why are this year’s Derby jerseys using the Cubs’ number font instead of the Giants?

Usually, when teams have similar colors at some level, one of the teams will wear different colored shorts. So in those senior photos of the Chile game, if Chile was wearing their navy blue shorts, it makes sense that Brazil wears the white to set it apart. Since Mexico was wearing their traditional white, Brazil sticks with the traditional blue shorts.
When AC Milan plays Inter Milan, each team will wear its striped shirt (red and black for Milan, blue and black for Inter) but one team will wear white shorts and socks, while the other squad will wear black socks and shorts, even if the uniform combos call for different looks for most home games.

And of course, being the lifelong Braves fan that I am I’m always interested in what’s out there. I’ve actually been giving a lot of thought to the vertical vs. radial arching debate lately, so this post hits the spot. Time to lay it out.
Here’s the thing: while there is a certain aesthetic appeal to good vertical arching, there’s also something troubling about it. Unless each individual letter is handmade (or drawn) by a truly skilled typographer, you can make a case that radial arching is actually superior. Why? Because simply altering an existing font in order to create a vertically arched effect is compromising the integrity of the original letterforms.
The problem I see with most radial arching is that it’s usually poorly executed, with terrible kerning issues being the most common error. But that’s not a problem with the style of arching, it’s a problem with the person doing it.
Essentially what I’m getting at is this: that there’s nothing inherently superior about one style of arching versus the other. In the hands of a skilled craftsperson they can both look fantastic, and when poorly executed they can both look like crap. We need to evaluate these things on a case-by-case basis.

to follow up on the “bronx is burning” post… reggie’s stirrups/sanitaries looked legit. I’ve got it tivo’d.. I’ll give another look.
I actually thought the yankees in the show were showing too much stirrup! for some reason I thought the “thin strip” stirrup was en vogue by ‘77.
also take note that billy martin’s road uni looks a bit odd… seems the “NEW YORK” block is too arched and spaced too far apart. could be a poor fitted uni on actor john turturro’s frame.
kind of dissecting, but hey what’s a yankee fan to do during the all-star break??

While I can’t speak for the Chicago Fire’s supporters, I do know that for many teams (like the Red Bulls) the supporters clubs are left to their own devices as far as flags go. So I don’t think Section 8 is going to be too concerned over changing a sponsors logo if they have to pony up the cash to do it.

Kudos to Scott for the spectacular job he is doing on the membership cards. The really amazing thing is that looking at all the numbers, you can easily ID which team is represented. Anthony Medrano is a career minor leaguer who has bounced around a number of organizations. His Baseball Cube page shows that he played for Montreal in Spring Training games in 2003 and 2004, so it’s likely a Spring Training game-worn.
I don’t remember if the Expos wore regular jerseys or batting practice ones during Spring Training. I’ve seen teams do jerseys for players who might be callups during the season (40 man roster guys), so it’s possible that it’s a game-issued jersey and not a game-worn one. I’ve got a Blue Jays Casey Blake like that.

on the other hand, if a player was a late season callup who never got into a game, he would have worn a uniform in the dugout, which would still make it “game worn”, just not “game played in”.
Maybe some other game worn jersey collectors could chime in on this?

This is from a yahoo board about lost college footbal rivalries. I laughed at the last paragraph:
They get handed out to th Freshman when they get rejected from Penn state and Get accepted to Pitt. Every Pitt reply on this thread reeks of ignorance.
- Temple agreed to a 2-1, no Pitt fan mentions that.
- PSU wasn’t bound to a conference schedule in the 80’s and had more freedom to schedule
- Pitt fans will constantly talk about how nobody cares about games played in Pittsburgh 100 years ago, then the same poster will talk about Pitt’s “Nine” National titles. Which are just as old, and bought and paid for.
- Pitt fans actually believe that PSU WANTED to play in Pittsburgh. Tables have turned,Pitt’s rented stadium is not nearly big enough to support this game. Pitt doesn’t WANT to play more games at Penn State, but they need to man up and do it, just like PSU did so many years ago.
- The Penn State athletic department receives ZERO dollars from the state, so the tax payers have no say.
- Pathetic Pitt fans will trumpet a 12-0 victory against one of the worst PSU teams ever, but PSU won SEVEN games in a row before that. What would you choose? 7/8 wins, or the last game of the series… easy choice.
For all you outsiders, you will notice how much artificial importance a second teir team like Pitt places on having what they call a “true rival.” When your team sucks and the only tradition it has is changing their uniform every year, all you have is the possibilty of beating the school down the road that you couldn’t get in to, and always wins on the gridiron. And maybe once every 8 years or so, you can pull off the upset.

Amen my friend! And this is why I like nameplates better. It reduces the chance the goofball lettering the jersey will screw up the arch.
Although I do still like vertical arch better than radial in most cases. It’s not much more difficult to do either. Illustrator can warp the font in 2 seconds to the right arch, and most shops use a mechanical cutter now, so the days of needing a talented person to letter a jersey are fading. I REALLY don’t miss the days of when I had to hand draw the names!

Game worns are my first love (hockey and baseball, anyway). In hockey especially this is a HUGE deal with backup goalies. Here’s an example of something I encountered recently:
The Senators made the Stanley Cup Finals and a guy who used to play here in Charlotte (where I’m a STH), Jeff Glass, was the 3rd or “practice” goalie. Ray Emery played all the games for the Sens and Marty Gerber was the backup. Obviously Glass’s was game issued as he never saw any time on the bench. But Gerber’s jersey….is it game worn or game issued? I say game worn. He took warmups with it on, wore it on the bench, etc. It should show a few puck marks on the front, maybe a little pipe paint on the back, and definitely would show pilling on the sleeves from his blocker and catcher. Some collectors will tell you it was only game issued because he never actually logged any minutes in it. Its a very gray area and is really up to the collector.
As for baseball gamers, I say if they wore it while called up to the bigs then it is game worn. If it was prepared for them and they never made it out of the minors or got injured and didn’t get put on the roster then I would say game issued. This would mainly apply to guys like Medrano who played the majority of the year in the minors and may or may not have been on the Expos 40 man roster. That’s where doing your homework on a player and his shirt comes into play (the really fun part of the GW hobby IMO).

I should also add to my game worn diatribe that I consider managers and coaches jerseys to be game worn. Sure, they don’t do shit but they are wearing it in a game.

Not even close to the WC kit. For starters, it has a collar (best part, I think), like the Dutch national kit. Second, the shirt must be a new design from adidas for this year. It’s not the United line of uniforms/jackets, because the piping (is that what you would call the yellow side stripe?) is different. It looks like the setup is a new line, judging from this Mexico shirt. http://adus.imageg.n...
Germany’s kit, for reference.
http://worldcupyears...
Two problems with the new design: 1.) The long sleeves amplify the overabundance of the three stripe motif. (Side pet peeve: In fencing, the sport with swords, you can buy adidas equipment, which is actually the same as another company with the stripes. Price difference? $150.) Yes, I get it, adidas made the kit. 2.) Someone tell the idiot he’s wearing his England kit’s boots. Red and white aren’t the colors of the Galaxy. Why doesn’t it match like everything else?
Since I’ve got you distracted with soccer, whaddya think about this kit?

I know the knock on the new New Era BP caps here has been over the design. For most of the teams I’m not crazy about it either. In my opinion, the design does work for some of the teams. I happen to be partial to the Washington Nationals BP cap. A week or so ago Paul had a small posting that said that the Mets were forced by MLB/New Era to go back to using the BP caps during BP in place of their game caps. The post featured a quote from somebody inside the Mets that who reffered to the caps as “awful.” Just wondering if anybody knows why the teams and/or players don’t like them. I’ve found that the caps do live it to what they are supposedly designed for. I wear mine while running and it soaks up the sweat. I’m also just back from 2 weeks in Rome where it was brutally hot and it kept the sweat out of my face. And it does that without runining the hat. The old wool game caps shring when you sweat and cotton caps just get too wet to wear. The only damage to my BP cap is the white sweat stains on the underside of the brim which can be easily washed out because the hat is polyester. Anybody have any thoughts or info?

I know of a few places online that do team deals really cheap, and i know we’d be over any minimums…i know i’d go to the t-shirt level, but i haven’t worn anything other than a jersey in over three years (almost always hockey, except football in really hot weather, and i’ll wear suits for those special occasions), and i’d proudly sport a uniwatch jersey, especially a hockey one
since we’re on ideas here, i mention uniwatch blog to people an awful lot, especially when i’m quoted for various hockey jersey things, but i get the feeling that it’s never really heeded…so i wondered if it’d be hard for Paul and Vince to make a sheet of UniWatchBlog business cards that we could print out, cut apart, and hand out when we give you guys a shameless plug. one 8.5″ X 11″ image, and we’ll take care of the rest. anybody think it’s a half-decent idea?

The type on the front of the Taco Bell jersey was really small. You’d think that with it being a corporate thing and all, it would be huge, right?
The Simpsons baseball thing was kind of interesting. I don’t have any screens, but I was surprised that they got the Tigers’ logo discrepancy right (thick D on jersey, bony D on cap). They had some weird piping going down the middle of the Giants wordmark on Barry’s jersey. Interesting stuff.

WOW Mets in pinstripes and blue hats. Paul must be in heaven!

YES!!!!!!!

All-Star introductions and the player representatives from the Mets are wearing the traditional, old-school pinstripes with all-blue caps…..NICE!!!!!

but I think that beltran atleast has on a black belt
#177 by Don M on 07.10.07 8:29 pm |
Of course the All-Star patch is huge! It has to fit on a hat for Barry Bonds’ watermelon sized head!

I love how teams like the Mets, Rockies and the Pirates insult the Uni Gods all year and then suddenly sprout a sense of shame at the All Star Game. Like no one is watching the rest of the year.
Alex Rios has serious problems with his Tor onto, its gapped and out of alignment.
Ichiro: weird shoe thing going on.

I agree on both points you made, although I’ll only go for a manager/coach jersey if that’s the only one in the style I want available.

anyone wearing a grey underbill? I didn’t notice.
#181 by JP on 07.10.07 8:33 pm |
When Carl Crawford was introduced, he was sporting the all black Rays hat. They haven’t worn that hat in 2 or 3 seasons. Very weird. Cant believe no one has mentioned David Wrights’ white cleats with orange laces yet. Gotta love the white kicks in the All Star Game.

once again my theory is still intact. which is in case you didn’t know that the mlb also required the mets not to wear their road cap at home when they told them to start wearing the bp caps. The Mets wore blue caps 5 games in a row at home before they went in their pre-allstar game road trip.
#183 by chris on 07.10.07 8:34 pm |
also the d-bags jerseys had some serious problems lining up the “A”s

That Willie Mays jacket is pretty hideous
#187 by Matt Nelson on 07.10.07 8:38 pm |
The Twins delegation at the All-Star game seems to be wearing the wrong hats. The “TC” hat is the home hat (which is what they’re all wearing), the “M” hat is the proper hat to go with the road grey uniforms.
#188 by Jeff B on 07.10.07 8:39 pm |
Very apropos scene during the AL all star introductions. Jim Leyland was introduced and ran down the line of AL reserves. From a long view and from behind a running Leyland, you see a long line of long baggy pantsed young players and an older, experienced, and fine dressed Leyland in high socks. I just like the symbolism there.

#192 by JMO on 07.10.07 8:42 pm |
Is it just me or are the 3 starting mets wearing different uniforms? It looked like Reyes and Beltran were in solid white home, and Wright was wearing the blue pinstripes ?

I’m going to guess. When the Twins switched to the CoolFlo helmets a year or two ago they abandoned the M helmet logo on the road to have a single set of helmets. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone decided to keep the logos congruent for the all star game by using the home caps as well.

I was going to count the number of gray underbills but I guess all the caps are new, since they have the All Star Game applique.
I know I’m late in mentioning this, but I’m watching the game on a slight Tivo delay. But did Chris Isaak sing “gave proof through the FIGHT” and “FOR the land of the free”??? Come on Chris.

White shoes on A-Rod

Definitely posted my comment in yesterday’s comments…
I’m watching the ASG and it dawned on me that the hat Paul linked to the other day – an A’s cap with ASG patch should be a road hat since the American League is on the road.

General rule is that they will sell any merchandise with the logo. For example, I remember seeing away Chicago Bears jerseys with Super Bowl logos on them when the Bears wore their home unis. It happens at any event in any sport because, well, they’re out to sell as much as they can.

Eh, similar hoops, but similarities end there.

Note the fully red shoulders, red stripe at top (not white), white three stripes (not blue), not the +teamgeist set (must be custom, not a template like MLS).
Also, Bayern patch > FC Dallas patch.

Just speaking aesthetically, I have to say I’m glad to see all of the teams wearing their normal,”official” uniforms, especially the Mets, Astros, Indians, and Rockies. I swear, the alternate thing has gotten way out of hand. The regualr unis look great. I wish MLB could put limits on the alts. Just trying to keep up with the Astros and Rockies combos must be mind-boggling for their fans.
I like the TC cap for Minni better anyway.
#215 by Stuby on 07.10.07 11:35 pm |
Weird to see a Dodger hat or an A’s hat with a big orange and black patch on it.
A-Rod with the high cuffs, dark socks and white cleats looked severely lame-o. He should’ve played the game in his business suit.

so far the count is torii, m.holliday, and rus martin…im sure theres others please feel free to add some

add dimitri young to the players with an insulin pump. you could see it on his belt during his at bat.

not uni-related, but i assume that this is the first ever j.j. vs. j.j matchup in ASG history (putz vs. hardy)

MVP presentation: Why couldn’t Ichiro still be in uniform…and that has to be the worst on-field interview I’ve ever seen in my life. LMAO @ “He loves San Francisco and he’s gonna be a free agent!”
Terrible.
#220 by Jeremiah on 07.11.07 12:12 am |
I can’t be lieve she said that. If I were the Mariners or a Mariners fan I’d be bent at what she closed the interview with. Actually, if a member of another MLB organization had said that publicly like that it’d be a clear-cut example of tampering. That was bad form, very unprofessional.
#221 by Brandon on 07.11.07 12:25 am |
What a lame ASG MVP trophy. Yeah the old one was kinda corny because it was a big glass star, but hey that makes a little sense. The one they gave Ichiro tonight looked like (please excuse my language) a glass dildo.

Im pretty sure that Dmitri Young had a microphone, not an insulin pump. Although they were talking about him being diabetic, the had the mic on the front of his jersey. I think the Dbacks 2nd baseman had one(cant remember his name) and I think i saw some other guys with it too.
