Some interesting tidbits from the France vs. Japan game in the American Football World Cup. Japan’s rising sun helmets were a plus, but the “Japan” on every nameplate, down the piping on the legs, and on the nose bumper amounted to overkill. France’s uniforms looked a little more understated and classy by comparison. The color combination of the teams remind you of anything? — Vince

Not the best looking uniforms I have ever seen. One plus at least is no awful looking colored pants.

What I find interesting is that on the Japan leg piping, the writing starts at the bottom and goes up…

I just wonder why France’s helmet blue cannot match the blue of the jersey.
Here’s hoping the USA comes out on top. Looking forward to seeing some other unis from this tournament.

That way, when the players are seated, the text “Japan” reads right-side up.

As for France, their mismatch of helmets and jersey colors reminds me of another team that couldn’t quite match the shades of blue.

Reminds me of the 80s Giants and Patriots.

Here’s the other Uni Watch-style email I got from Kitbag.com…

Football Round Up – Part 2

It’s been a busy week so far with some great new kits going on sale and some massive new signings see below for links to take you straight to the hottest new lines.

Celtic’s new away shirt is now available to pre order; get the shirt of the champions now by clicking here.

Thierry Henry’s new club, Barcelona, have got a great new home kit celebrating 50 years at the Nou Camp, get his name and number on the new shirt by clicking here.

There was some discussion a while back about the Unicef logo on the Barca jersey. Barcelona are famous for not wearing a sponsor’s logo and apparently the Unicef logo is no exception as Barcelona wears the logo to support the charity and does not recieve sponsorship money from Unicef.

There is a chapter devoted to the significance of Barcelona FC in the book “How Soccer Explains the World.” It’s a great book and I recommend it to anyone interested soccer, sports, politics, and / or world cultures.

Another tidbit from the “World Cup” picture… Japan has their nation’s flag on their colored socks! Atta boy, Nippon!

If you want to check out what the helmet and logo for team usa look like

http://www.usafootba...

Why are they both wearing dark colors?

Good thing this wasn’t an NFL game…#23 would have been fined for letting his socks fall down.

Barcelona are famous for not wearing a sponsor’s logo and apparently the Unicef logo is no exception as Barcelona wears the logo to support the charity and does not recieve sponsorship money from Unicef.

In fact, Barcelona makes an annual donation to UNICEF in order to wear the logo.

Wait…where did the team in red hail from again?

Japan won the game 48-0!?!

One thing i’m surprised no one has mentioned is the fact that both teams are wearing their color jerseys. True, one team is wearing red and the other is wearing blue, but you know this sort of thing would cause a problem if France played…say…the US.

One thing i will say is that I’ve always wanted the Canadiens and Maple Leafs play a red vs. blue match. Maybe they could put one of those together at the Rogers Centre or something…

The french helmets explanation could just be lack of money. I remember they used to have darker jerseys a few years ago. I am not sure but if you look closer you might find mismatching helmets, socks and pants as well, just like in the french league. Anyway it’s cool they lost 48-zip because the headcoach refused to select the 07 mvp for this tournament.

Any of these football games on TV?

About the tournament: a whopping six teams are playing. Japan, Sweden, France, Germany, USA, and Korea. ‘All teams will play a round-robin within their group. The top team in each group will advance to the championship game. The second team in each group will play in the third place game and the third team in each group will play in the fifth place game.’

Japan Semi-pro league, corporate sponsored team a la Nippon baseball.

Japan’s Footbal history

doh. Japan’s Football history

i do like the litle flags on japan’s socks

UnderArmour continues to have a stranglehold over every sports team that appears in the movies of late. Last night, I saw a preview for that awful-looking movie in which Dwayne Johnson, a/k/a/ “The Rock,” is a pro football player who suddenly has to parent a young child he never knew he had. Guess who provides the uniforms for Johnson’s team? You guessed it . . . UA. I kept waiting for the little girl to say “click clack.”

Wait…this exists?

Oh, and, I’ve been in Ireland for a month and the new Arsenal away kit came out on Thursday and I saw this ad for it while I was looking in one of the shops…dig those socks.

From yesterday: Here’s the clip I was looking for referring to the “Ultimate Belt”:

http://youtube.com/w...

Enjoy.

Interesting article here about the number 7 in MLB.

Props for including the Seinfeld reference; negative props for goofing up the end of it.

As much as it pains me to say it (I’m a Man United supporter), I’ve always loved Arsenal’s kits.

I just saw this uni-related article on MLB.com about the number 7. http://mlb.mlb.com/n...

You mean rouge (rouges? I’m not sure if that should be plural or not) vs. blue.

Umm, i think logo creep would be an understatement here

Yes, it has. I tried to link, but I’m not able to get it work. Search the site for “colorado uniforms”.

So, I was watching NFL Films’ “America’s Game” on the 1986 Giants, and during that year’s Divisional Playoff game against San Franciscop I noticed a uni-related oddity that I haven’t been able to find an explanation for. In this screencap from the episode it appears that a San Francisco defensive lineman is wearing a black facemask, unlike the grays everyone else is wearing. Is this a lighting trick or is there an actual discrepancy? Does anyone know?

Flip on the Yankees Angels game on FOX and look at the sleeves on Roger Clemens’ jersey. His right sleeve appears to be cut slightly shorter than his left. FOX even showed a recap of Clemens’ last start in which this was also visible.

Japan is actually going for a three-peat, so they are somewhat of a favorite. (Granted, their second tournament win was only against 3 other teams and this year is the first year the US has participated.) And I mean, c’mon, they were playing France. The pre-game cheese and cigarettes probably got to them 3 minutes into the game and they just couldn’t keep up with Japanese efficiency.

Bill has nailed this. When I saw this picture my thoughts turnrd to my Giants of Simms, LT and Carson or what is now our glory days. Springsteen reference intentional.

If you go to this link it shows five of the teams jerseys. I think I like Germany’s the best.

His sleeve is probably cut shorter b/c that is his pitching arm and it I’m sure he feels less restricted with the sleeve cut short.

Looks grey to me. Darker because of the lighting, but still grey.

um, this is a random question, but does anyone know which of their home jerseys the Mets’ players will be wearing in the all-star game?

Do any of you know how long Liverpool will be using their green/white alts? Are there plans to change them? If so, to what?

Thanks

Angels/Yanks game on Fox…when did Kyle Farnsworth start wearing specs? Don’t remember him using them as a Cub (Chicago fan here). Willits looking good in the socks department too.

Geoff said:

There are no random questions on an open thread.

That said, recent history suggests that the Amazins will wear this on Tuesday.

Since the N.L. has been sucking big time in the All-Star Game recently, the Mets players should wear this in an effort to reverse the Senior Circuit’s fortunes.

I’m watching Copa America, Venezuela vs Uruguay. I have not been pleased with most of the uniforms during this tournament, especially all the piping. Watching this game one things I noticed about Uruguay is that the names on the back of the jerseys are not capitalized. Also, the Puma log creep is ridiculous. I count six puma logos (there is one on each shoulder that is tough to see in this picture). And then saw that even the captains arm band is nothing but a Puma ad.

I really like that blue Spurs Anniversary kit, much more so than the white one.

Don’t players get to choose? That’s one of the problems with having multiple uniforms. Nothin’s uniform.

Anyone else watch the golf today? Anyone else notice KJ Choi’s upside down Nike swoosh on the visor band just behind his left ear? What’s up with that?

dont know about years past but hes been wearing them this season.. it hink ive seen him w/ prescrition clear oakley’s as well

Cubs/Pirates game on WGN, Brenly and whoever else does the announcing now had a conversation about the red Pirates vest. I’m paraphrasing here, but something to the effect of they look like they had an unfortunate ketchup accident. Then they went on about who’s idea was it for the red. They said the Cubs might as well have a green or yellow alternate. Apparently they said more Friday (when the Pirates were actually wearing the vests) but since Friday’s game was not on WGN TV, I could not watch it.

On another note, I’ve decided I hate the red billed away hats for the Cubs.

I’ve also decided I hate players wearing soccer socks with their pants high. It doesn’t look right.

Bill T. I absolutely agree.

Jill I agree that the Cubs away hats look weird. Also, don’t know if you agree, but i would much rather see the soccer socks than pajama pants any day.

P.S. Anyone seen Minna?

I googled searched to see if I could find standings or anything for the World Cup of American Football. I found an article about Japan beating France and as a note at the end was about team USA. It said who the coach was and that the team was made up of college players and said “The United States, making its debut in the World Cup, will face South Korea on July 10 and take on Germany two days later in Group B.” Even pee wee football only plays once a week, whats up with playing 2 games in 3 days?

Put it in the books…

But that would mean the Japan on the right side would then be upside down when they’re seated–however, both sides are right side up when they’re seated, since on the right, the Japan starts at the top and reads down. (See the nose bumper pic). It’s kind of like how if you lay a cd down face up, the writing on both the left and right spine will be face up as well, as one side reads up and one reads down. Interestingly enough (to the type of people still reading this comment), they didn’t design video tape boxes (or DVD boxsets that have writing on both spines) like this. One side will be upside down when it’s laid flat. At least in most “cases”…

I’m a huge Halos fan. I love Willits’ old-school look and style of play. In other Yanks/Angels news: Torre wasn’t rocking the Hefty bag today. He actually had the jersey on. Now if only Scioscia would toss away his own trash bag.

Ryan:

Puma has been using that font since the World Cup. It’s called Puma Pace. It was designed for them by Dalton Maag, a german design company. It was never released to the public but there are plans to do so in the near future.

Also the reason there is so much logo creep on those jerseys as opposed to nike’s set of jerseys currently is because the clothes Puma’s teams wear are all template pieces with custom colors.

This means you can go pick up the same exact pair of those shorts or socks at any soccer store, the difference is the embroidered logo and sometimes the colors. Basically those uniforms aren’t custom designed for those teams (exception italy) and so they have a template which just changes the colors for each team. Hence all the logo creep.

Although generally Puma is much better about it than either of the other two soccer congloms.

I hope someone is still up. Is Dressed To The Nines not working for anyone else?

Hats with the All-Star patch are on display and for sale in SF. They’re ridiculously large, and look terrible on hats that don’t match the orange color scheme.

There’s a database error at the up-to-date site, so that Daniel (and the rest of us) can’t look up uniforms.

Correct for the most part, however some teams have a lightly screened on logo huge on the shirt, like Czech Republic.

http://www.soccer.co...

same on the white shirt and for a few other teams.

How does Canada not have a team in that world cup? Did we have an issue wanting to play an extra down?
