New ESPN column today. I’ll add the link when it goes live. tomorrow.
Meanwhile: Great time last night, as Uni Watch auction consultant David Brown and I headed up to the Museum of the City of New York, where we attended the opening reception for Glory Days, an exhibit devoted to New York City baseball from 1947 through 1957. Okay, so this period has been over-mythologized, and the whole “Willie, Mickey, and the Duke” thing gets tiresome, but they had some amazing artifacts on hand (not to mention free hot dogs, Cracker Jack, and beer), so it was totally worth it.
I wasn’t allowed to use a flash, but I still managed to get pretty decent pics, some of the more interesting of which are as follows:
• There were lots of advertising pieces, many of them for cigarettes (always kinda sad to see a cigarette ad from someone who eventually died of a heart attack). Also: a really great uni/equipment-related ad.
• This 1948 Joe DiMaggio jersey had the thickest memorial armband I’ve ever seen. It was added for Babe Ruth, who died that year.
• I found it hilarious that this game-used Mickey Mantle jersey was supplied by a Boston outfitter. Maybe that explains that slightly misshapen-looking chest insignia.
• There was a small display of women’s baseball ephemera — and sure enough, that’s where I spotted A League of Her Own director Penny Marshall, who looked much, much worse than this photo indicates.
• Tons of old programs and yearbooks, as you might expect. Lots of ticket stubs too, like this one from the 1948 All-Star Game (love the use of “Nite” and “Eve’g”), and this one from the 1947 Negro World Series, played at Yankee Stadium. And hey, speaking of the Negro Leagues, did you realize they had their own official ball? I didn’t.
• Lots of Jackie Robinson-related stuff, including a jersey (here’s the tagging), a fascinating plea for tolerance, and an absolutely astonishing letter that Robinson wrote to broadcaster Mel Allen in 1959. It’s eloquent and powerful, and it was easily the most affecting thing I saw in the exhibit. Here’s a larger version, which is easier to read.
• This was meant to be worn as a visor. As you might imagine, I like the color.
• Remember the story that broke a few years ago about the Giants stealing signs during the famous “Shot Heard ’Round the World” game in 1951? This is supposedly the spyglass they used to do it.
• These press passes are almost as cool as a Uni Watch membership card. Ditto for this Knot-Hole Gang I.D. card.
• Most references to the Ebbets Field scoreboard refer to the famous Abe Stark ad along the bottom. But until I saw this photo, I didn’t realize that the h and e in “Schaefer” were rigged up to indicate a hit or error.
• Here’s an Ebbets Field usher’s uniform, complete with team patch and I.D. button.
• Why was this Johnny Podres jersey torn? Read the answer here.
• Gorgeous sleeve patch on this 1951 Yankees jersey.
• Although technically outside of the exhibit’s 1947-57 purview, there was a little nook devoted to the Mets, including a ticket stub from their first home game and Gil Hodges’s 1968 contract (here’s the second page).
And so on. A must-see for New Yorkers (and for member Don Schafer, who’s gonna be in town this weekend), the exhibit runs through the end of the year, and admission is free from 5pm to 9pm today through Saturday. Don’t miss.

Membership Update: Thanks to some truly Herculean labors by Scott Turner (and some not inconsiderable efforts by myself), almost every single uniform number on the Uni Watch membership roster is now linked to a card design. Some of them are real doozies, too, as you can see in the card design gallery (my favorite so far: Mark Mayall’s shout-out to Roger Bannister, which was a special request we were happy to fulfill). My apologies to Michael King, who I added to the roster weeks ago but whose card design somehow slipped through the cracks until I realized the oversight last night. We’re taking care of it right now, Michael — mea culpa.
Any card that’s been designed but not yet printed will be going to the printer today, and I expect to get many of them out in the mail by Saturday, with the rest by next Monday. This project continues to be really sensational on several different levels (I’m continuing to learn a lot about uni number typefaces) — much more successful than I had envisioned. Thanks again to all, and keep those sign-ups coming.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: There’s a Tennessee track star whose visual signature is her striped socks. Full details here. … Regarding the Israel Baseball League, Nate Budziszewski notes that the Netanya Tigers logo looks a lot like this. … Bizarre scene yesterday in Madrid, as David Beckham suited up for a practice session of American football. Full photo gallery here. … Iowa State apparently has new yellow pants (as spotted by Jason Hack). … Tim Bennett notes that Alan Embree’s uni number appears to be slightly off-center. “It bugged me so much,” he adds, “I missed seeing the game-winning homer in Tuesday night’s game because I was pausing the DVR and taking these pictures with my cell phone.” … Our friends at No Mas have arranged a really interesting event tonight. Based on the NBA draft, it will feature 500 scratch-off tickets, 105 Warhol-esque portraits and a Ping-Pong ball machine. For full details, check out this article, which I wrote for today’s New York Sun.

The yellow Iowa State pants are terrible. Just when one Big XII team (the Aggies) gets past the shiny, stripeless pants look, another gets bogged down further. There are a lot of cool things that can be done with red and yellow, but ISU’s disaster is not one of them.

Great photos from the exhibit, Paul. Wish I could go. Just got back from 4 days at Cooperstown, so I’ve done NY for this year.
Yellow uni pants are always a mistake.
I’m still trying to decide on a number for my UniWatch membership card. And waiting for the state legislature to decide on my pay-raise to see what level I can afford.

While we are talking about sports ads. Uniwatch has clearly made me obsessive. Anyone seen the Corona ad on the back of SI from last week? The one with the umpire in beach attire…
Anyway, is it me or does it seem like the two players shown are on the same team, but just with home and road versions of the uniform. Granted, they are solid unis other than solid socks. They are simple road greys and home pinstripes, but they are the same exact color scheme.
Sorry no pics yet.

Beckham’s wife has been busy as well. In this pic, it looks like she’s catching the ball, not throwing it.

Very odd thing happened this past Saturday when I was at the Mets/A’s game. A guy from the Dairy Council threw out the first pitch, but he stood on the mound about 2-3 feet BEHIND the rubber! It had to be like a 62 or 63 foot throw. (Obviously it was way short) I’ve never seen that before.

As a Mets fan my entire life, I remember the Manufacturers Hanover sign with the light up H and E - LONG before the days of “Diamond Vision”. Of course, when I started watching, it was about 1978 or so, so there weren’t too many “H”’s for the Mets, but lots of “E”’s

Sorry to self-refer, but it’s unlikely Mel Allen made any Anit-Semetic remarks. Having been born in the deep south (Birmingham, AL) well before integration and the Civil Rights Movement, he may very well have held some racist opinions.

What I find amazing about the membership card gallery is how right you and Scott have gotten everything. It just emphasizes how poorly done the numbering and lettering on custom authentic and replica jerseys is sometimes. No white border on the Yankees road jersey numbers? Names on the back? No problem!
Maybe you and Scott should start a “jersey back design” business so people with blank authentics or replicas can get their jerseys customized correctly.

AWESOME Bannister card. I’m planning on signing up soon and was hoping to use a bib number for Eric Heiden’s Lake Placid exploits, but can’t find any good photos. I think I have a good plan B though.
Anyhoo, new Barca jerseys are out. There’s some text encircling the crest that I can’t quite make out. Looks like it sez 1957-2007, which would mark the 50th anniv. of the Nou Camp.

Here’s what I don’t get about this Israel Baseball League… that Tigers logo actually spells out “Tygrs” in the Hebrew letters… why wouldn’t they use the Hebrew word (which I’m sure is something else entirely)?

That Negro League All-Star game ticket had some very interesting rain out disclaimers at the bottom. Especially where it said if the Yankees game was rained-out it would be pushed back to the same day as the All-Star game which would then be pushed back to the rain-out day.

Re.:Mantle 1954 Jersey.
Although the Mickey Mantle jersey had “‘54″
embroidered on the bottom,I believe that the jersey was made for the 1953 World Series. I have
seen pictures showing the Yankees wearing jerseys
with that particular crest from that series. It
resembles the crest from the home jerseys from 1936-1945.

…always kinda sad to see a cigarette ad from someone who eventually died of a heart attack…
Gil Hodges was from my home town, tiny Petersburg, Indiana. This is totally not uni related, but Hodges belongs in the Hall of Fame. He was a staple of those Brooklyn teams in the 1950s. Hodges had 1001 RBI during the 50s, behind only his teammate Duke Snider and more than Yogi Berra and Stan Musial. By the way, all three of those guys are in the Hall of Fame.
Add Hodges’ short but legendary run as the manager of the Miracle Mets and it’s a no-brainer to me. (Yeah, I’m a little biased. The sign as you enter town says “PETERSBURG - HOME OF GIL HODGES” and as you leave town, you cross the Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge. One of our little league teams every year is known as “Hodges’ Dodgers.” Needless to say, he’s well known here, even 35 years after his death.)
An author named Marino Amoruso wrote a book about Hodges 15 years ago or so. They are some great photos in the book. I’ll try to dig around to find my copy. My personal favorite is the picture of Hodges on Petersburg High School’s basketball team. My grandfather is in the picture, too–he played on the team with Hodges.
The book is worth reading for anyone who is a fan of Hodges, the Dodgers, or Brooklyn baseball.

Anytime anyone asks for images from a baseball game (any major sport, really)… you should mention the exact date.
Reason being many of us have MLB.tv (myself included) and can go back into archived games and watch them in their entirety.

Just an FYI! I’m always happy to do it, but I gotta know the exact game…

Love the Ebbets Field reference, as well as the one about Shea and the Manufacturer’s Hanover sign (I’d never heard that).
I remember when Camden Yards went up, they made reference to Ebbets and the Schaefer sign, since the “THE SUN” (local Baltimore paper) sign at the top of the main scoreboard also has and H and E that light up separately.
Any other parks do this?

Gang,
I checked with Paul first on this, and he was cool with it. I have a 1991 New York Mets jersey (no number or name, just a blank) … It’s the road jersey shown here and since I’m a Marlins fan, I’m taking a shot in the dark, but if anyone here has a Marlins jersey and wants a Mets jersey, I’d make a swap. In fact, I’d probably swap for anything LOL (sorry Mets fans). I grew up a Mets fan, but moved to Florida and was there for the birth of the team, and I’ve been a Marlin fan since 1993.
Anyways, if folks are interested at all, let me know at mercfran@isu.edu … it is an authentic jersey that I got for my college graduation…the stitching is nice, and I’ve worn it like twice on jersey days. I do understand the odds of a Marlins fan here (or anywhere) is slim, but I thought I’d take a shot. I can take digital pictures of it when I get home if need be.

I believe Hodges graduated in 1941. He was born in 1924.
And yes, Petersburg is a small town, but you correctly do show that it is indeed a small world out there.
Speaking of Hodges…here’s a pic of Hodges with three of his fellow inaugural Mets teammates in 1962. Hodges is second from the left. Anyone recognize the other three (without cheating? :P)
And they /all/ know how to wear a pair of stirrups.

If you ask v-e-r-y nicely, and if you can accept that the answer may turn out to be, “No.”… The tequila sunrise was a fun challenge that we couldn’t resist, but we’re actually in pretty good shape right now for many vintage MLB designs — as you can see in the gallery, a few people have gotten Royals powder blues. And vintage NFL is generally pretty easy (as you can see, we honored a request for an orange crush Broncos design). NHL can be trickier.
So yeah, go ahead and ask — worst that can happen is that we’ll say no.
Please DON’T ask for: minor leagues, CFL, NBA, soccer, rugby, NCAA — those are all out of bounds for now.

Shaftman - here’s a transcription of the body of the letter:
I just heard your interview with Mike Wallace in which you said I had become a crusader.
Your reference to ‘tact and discretion’ sounds so much like those who counsel that the Negro to be liked must be humorous, patient and humble . . . . that a Negro American, regardless of what he does in a particular field, just to be liked must cater to the whims and humors of other people. I have news for you, Mel. The new Negro is no longer grinning when he isn’t tickled and neither does he scratch when he doesn’t itch. You, Mel, and a lot of other people had better dig this fact and apply it to the 3/4’s of the world who are colored people. Your story about Joe Louis leaves me completely cold. I have never heard Joe profess himself to be the leader of the Negro race, nor have I ever made any such claim. Furthermore, I have never called Joe at his camp or any other place and I challenge you to prove that I did.
Lastly, you imply that I was foolish to take up some of the issues I did because, ‘they didn’t amount to anything.’ They may not have meant anything to you and to your friends, Mel, but they have meant a great deal to me and many of the people I know. I think you know, Mel, that I have to do things I believe to be right and not just to please you or anyone else. And I think this is true of any other man, Negro or white, who calls himself a man.

The two teams in the Corona add are the Cubs and the Dodgers (the older version w/o names) which I assume were picked because the unis were sufficiently generic that no license fees had to be paid.

Embree’s 41 does look bad, but it is centered, from what I can tell from the photos. Far left edge of the 4 is even with the right edge of the first letter, and far right edge of the 1 is even with the left edge of the last letter. It’s a horrible number to try to center. They really should move it a little to the left, but it is centered.

The last player in my mystery picture, or rather the first, from the left, is Frank Thomas, the well-known Pirates OF from the 50s. Then, continuing to the right, is Hodges, Don Zimmer, and Roger Craig, as noted by Stuby.

MLB.tv uses Windows Media Player. You need to configure your WMP to not use overlays. Right-click the screen > Options > Performance > in “Video Acceleration” > Advanced.
In that box unclick “Use Overlay”. You don’t want to use overlays.
You may have to restart MLB.tv and WMP.
Then you can capure with anything, including the ol’ ALT-PRINT SCREEN.
(Disclaimer: don’t call me if this goofs up your WMP. If things don’t work you can probably re-set it. It works for me, that’s all I’m saying)

alternatively, if you open another media player and have any old video or stream paused in it, THEN open the mlb.tv stream in WMP, you can usually PrintScreen off of that.
The key is to have some other video open first, this prevents any other media apps from using overlays

So then…. one would have to assume that Oregon’s deal with Nike is MUCH better since they have soooo many different unis and are obviously not coming out of Oregon’s pocket. Wonder what the Longhorn deal includes….

Look on the ‘Net for a free program called “ZapGrab”. It is a little application that copies images from any program. All you do is highlight the image you want and then paste it into MS Paint or whatever.
I use it for all sorts of grabs on Flash-based online press conferences (like the Washington Capitals’ jersey unveiling).
It’s super-easy to use, and it is way easier than configuring a program or opening multiple video feeds.

During the 1962 season, New York Mets centerfielder Richie Ashburn and Venezuelan shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, “I got it! I got it!” only to run into the 160-pound Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, “¡Yo la tengo! ¡Yo la tengo!” which is “I’ve got it” in Spanish. In a later game, Ashburn happily saw Chacón backing off. He relaxed, positioned himself to catch the ball, and was instead run over by 200-pound leftfielder Frank Thomas, who understood no Spanish
