New ESPN column today — here’s the link.
Meanwhile: In Monday’s Ticker I mentioned the Florida State League All-Star Game, where players wore generic all-star unis instead of their regular team designs. That led to a note from Doug TKTK, who informed me that the single-A Carolina and California Leagues have their respective all-stars play each other, with league uniforms. That discovery in turn led me to this page, which has a surprising amount of info about the past few years’ worth of minor league all-star games — and that’s where things got interesting.
For starters, I learned that although the Florida State League wore those awful East and West unis this year (there’s a full gallery here), the FSL stars wore their regular team unis last year and the year before that (which means some idiot had to go out of his way to create those East and West disasters they wore this time around).
That got me curious about some of the other low-level minor league all-star games, so I started combing through the archives. For the most part, the leagues have their players wear their regular team designs, but there were some exceptions and inconsistencies, as follows:
• NY-Penn League (short-season A): Standard team uniforms in 2005. Odd move last year, however, as players wore the jerseys of their parent clubs (this was actually discussed here on the blog at the time, but I’d forgotten about it). This year’s game isn’t until August, so we’ll have to wait and see how they handle it.
• California and Carolina Leagues (A): 2007: As noted above, these leagues had their players wear league-branded uniforms this year (check out the awesome star-patterned uni numbers on the California jerseys, shown at the top of this page and visible at full size in this gallery). It’s not clear what the players wore last year, but in 2005 they had regular team uniforms, so the league unis are apparently a fairly new thing.
It’s worth remembering, incidentally, that the “real” All-Star Game hasn’t always featured regular team uni designs. For the inaugural mid-season classic in 1933, the American League stars wore their regular uniforms, but the National Leaguers wore special all-star attire.
Incidentally, in the course of my research I discovered a historical all-star oddity that I’m currently trying to figure out. More details, I hope, tomorrow.

Raffle Reminder: The drawing for the free copy of the 2001 MLB Style Guide will take place tonight (after I get back from seeing this guy). Entries — one per person, please — can be e-mailed here and will be accepted until 10 pm eastern. I’ll announce the winner tomorrow. And remember, everyone who’s signed up for membership automatically gets three bonus entries.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Give ‘Em an Inch Dept.: First NFL coaches get the right to wear suits, and the next thing you know Rams coach Scott Linehan is walking around in a Russell polo shirt (nice catch by Mike Korczynski). … Haven’t oohed and ahhed about this guy in a while. … A little birdie tells me the 49ers will probably be switching to black shoes this season. … The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yanks will wear Pocono Raceway jerseys next month. … This smeared eye black thing — as shown in these pics of Alfredo Amezaga, both taken yesterday — is getting seriously out of hand (with thanks to Perry Gattegno). … Reprinted from last night’s comments: In response to yesterday’s Ticker item about Reggie Jackson wearing a Mariners uni for the AL team portrait prior to the 1979 All-Star Game, Steve J. Rogers came up with the portrait, and sure enough, there’s Reggie. … Greg Hanson and his buddies play a video game called Forza Motorsport, and some of them have created some pretty cool team-based car designs. As usual, I know zero about video games, but I like the designs, so I’ve put a bunch of them in this gallery. … Lucas Burdick provided these shots of Scott Eyre and Willie Eyre wearing odd Cubs/Rangers combo jerseys, apparently as part of an Illinois Sate Lottery commercial. No script, unfortunately — anyone know the supposedly storyline here? … Jeremy Brahm reports that Brazil’s teams will wear these uniforms in the Pan Am Games. … Reprinted from last night’s comments: The NHL has officially decided to stick with dark at home, white on the road (scroll down to the last graf of this page). … Kevin Gee says that when Reggie Willits came to bat left-handed in the bottom of the 7th in last night’s Angels/Astros game, he was initially wearing a right-handed batting helmet (he’d been hitting right-handed all game up to that point, but the ‘Stros had just brought in a righty pitcher). “Brad Ausmus [the Houston catcher] patted him on the head and reminded him he was wearing the wrong helmet, prompting him to go back to the dugout and get another one,” says Kevin. Unfortunately, the Anaheim broadcast, which is the only one I have access to, cut away to an aerial shot while this was happening. Did anyone in Houston happen to Tivo the game?

Re: Nationals Jerseys
The Nationals jersey scheme is simple.
-Gray jerseys with Navy Blue trim and Blue Hats on the road
-White Jerseys with red trim and red hats at home
-Red “DC” Jerseys with Red hats for Sunday Home games
With the batting practice jerseys also being navy blue, I don’t see how you could call that wearing “too much” red…If there is such a thing

Paul, there’s been a leak with the Bruins uniforms.
The front page of today’s Boston Globe has this picture: http://cache.boston....
with an article about the new fabric and technologies. The picture has the new serifed-B logo, and an idea of the new shoulder patch as well.

The Florida State league went to the team jerseys for the All-Star game so that they could be auctioned off to benefit local charities in the Daytona Beach area, where the game was held.

In the Regie pic it looks like the Ranger All-Star sitting in front of him has a Cubs hat on as well. The airport baggage handlers in Seatle that year must have been on strike.
RE: Bruins Uni - It doesn’t look too bad, but whoever put that graphic together at the newspaper needs to learn how to render hockey players.
#6 by DJ on 06.21.07 8:59 am |
If you go to the Bruins website, they have a more detailed version of the shoulder patch (not a complete version). It’s a throwback to an earlier Bruins logo, with a bruin standing beneath “BRUINS” in large script, and “BOSTON” in a small bar at the base (the logo of the past had the words reversed, and was in brown and gold).

Not Uni-related, but I thought this was a great story from The Brewers/Giants games last night:
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brian Shouse screamed at catcher Damian Miller in the sixth inning, trying to alert him that a second Giants runner was racing home.
No help. With the Milwaukee crowd roaring, Miller couldn’t hear his pitcher at all. It was a voice from the front row that saved Miller, who had scampered near the third-base dugout to retrieve an errant throw.
“I had a fan yell at me, ‘Home, home, home’ when I was right there,” Miller said. “You can’t hear anything when the players yell at you, but there was a fan right in the front row yelling ‘home.’ Must have been a Brewers fan.”
Shouse took Miller’s toss and tagged Kevin Frandsen at the plate to prevent the tying run from scoring, and the Brewers swept the struggling Giants 7-5 on Wednesday to extend San Francisco’s losing streak to seven games.

And the most annoying thing to me about this pic is that the “00″ is upside-down.
The fat part of the number should be on the right. If you look inside the number you will see that the hole makes a “D.” We had a saying when making jerseys with those types of fonts (Capitals mainly), “There’s no D in zero.”

The other part that no one has pointed out is the player on the right (#9) and the catcher are wearing black sani’s while everyone else is wearing red.

For one, I do not remember the Angels wearing a dark jersey. And two, I wonder why Ryan is the only one of his teammates wearing the white jersey?

What gets me about the new Bruins logo is the Serifs in the logo don’t match the serifs in the Bruins font used when spelling out Bruins. In the lofo the serif is angled, but when spelled out it’s blocked.

I was watching little big league the movie last night and noticed something quite interesting. The twins’ players where wearing stirups with the “M” logo on them. I never knew they wore these. It is espically noticable at the end right before Ken Griffey robs lou collins. While Lou’s standing in the box staring at Randy Johnson they zoom in on his feet. Here is a picture showing an actual twin with them. Imagine if jamie moyer was a twin?

I know Washington is (I super stoked for them to [sort of] get back to the older logo0, but I also remember that Toronto is doing some tweaking and I hadn’t heard anything about ANA, SJ or OTT changing anything. Maybe I am just reading too much into it…
#29 by Adam on 06.21.07 10:03 am |
I don’t think that Scott and Willie Eyre thing is from an Illinois Lottery commericial - I didn’t see it myself, but based on the graphic it’s just a sponsered segment of a Cubs game from WGN (or possibly WCIU). Coming back from commericial sometimes, they do a little segment on fans or players or whatever, and that’s what this is. As to why they were wearing those, I have no idea.
#30 by Joe H on 06.21.07 10:04 am |

Thank to all the uniform and logo changes this might be one of the more highly anticipated NHL drafts in a long time. I have also noticed that hockey fans/players seem to pay a little more attention on a whole than other sports. If fans don’t like a uniform, they’ll revolt, similar to the catch and release they did of the Isles jersey we shall not describe. Some 3rd jerseys have been scratched, maybe a little later than we may have hoped because fans spoke up. (Ducks with the cartoon, Kings with the weird sash, Bruins poop jersey)

What on earth is going on in that picture of the Eyres? One of the unis is half cubs home jersey, the other appears to be gray but with their traditional home insignia on there instead of the word “Chicago”. On the back though the Cubs’ half is gray on both unis. who designed that nonsense?

I believe in the All Star Game players were allowed to wear alternate or bp unis for fun which is why there were white and blue jerseys in the photo. This is best illustrated in the 1975 all star game in which 3 Athletics went green jersey with white pants, one went yellow jersey with white pants and vida blue went yellow jersey yellow pants(i havent been able to find a pic).
And another vote for home whites in the NHL….i hate only seeing two colors of jerseys over 41 games,….silly

Dear NHL
WHITE AT HOME
Sincerly,
Steven
Anyone think some of the “leaked” Caps designs were done on purpose? Just to see what people think? Teddy (the owner) is smart like that, and knows enough about the internet to get some free marketing research from fans interested enough to find the leaked photos.
And for the final time, let’s make this clear. Any leagues that play in an arena should wear white at home. The white looks good under the lights. Baseball, steeped in the tradition of white or grey unis, should wear white (or natural) at home. Football and futball/soccer can wear what they want since they’re outdoors and don’t play nearly as many games. I am willing to make exceptions for occasional marketing stunts because, hey, a little variety is fun.
Any thoughts?

Regarding the “eye black smear,” The 2007 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Champions C.W. Post Pioneers have been doing it for years. Paul they must be UniWatch’s unofficial school of choice regarding uniform colors. C.W. Post’ school colors are represented in those awesome “Gold & Green” uni’s.
They are even less than a 1/2 hour drive from UniWatch home office in Brooklyn :).

49ers in black shoes? Awesome! I remember a 49ers player in the ’80s named Bobby Leopold who was the only guy on the team to wear black shoes and it looked pretty sharp. Of course that was with the classic, and in my opinion, much classier uniform of the Bill Walsh era.
Still, it just goes to show that Mike Nolan ‘Gets It’.

From the Chicago Tribune: “Urlacher already had made a statement anyway, subtle yet significant, by wearing Lance Briggs’ No. 55 during practice in support of a teammate locked in a contract dispute with the Bears bound only to get worse.
Other Bears players traded jerseys to break up the monotony of the final day of off-season practice but Urlacher was the only guy whose wardrobe choice turned heads. Team officials couldn’t have liked the look.
“What’s in a number?” coach Lovie Smith answered when asked about Urlacher’s jersey.
As loyal as Urlacher is, as the Bears real franchise player, he walks a fine line through this fight. Briggs might want to ask his buddy to leave the No. 55 in the drawer at Bourbonnais.”

The Quebec major Junior hockey League does this, switching after the Christmas break. As merchandising is a significant percentage of revenue for Major Junior Teams, and teams rarely have fans outside there own market, they use this as an incentive to home fans to have one of each. The timing of the switch makes the dark jersey a popular Christmas present.

I’d prefer that the NHL wear white at home. Like the old Westerns when the good guys wore the white hats and the bad guys wore the black hats.
It would also provide for more variety in what I get to see each game instead of the same dark jersey at home every game. I’d rather see a black jersey, then a red and then a blue as each visitor comes to my city.

I think the rule requiring a white jersey is preposterous. It’s a lame holdover from the days of B&W TV. Why can’t teams have 2 different coloured jerseys? There are few if any white NHL jerseys that are even palatable. The vast majority are pretty dull, with their coloured bretheren carrying all the weight. I’m not saying abolish the white jersey, just make it optional.

For what it’’s worth, add the Cardinals’ So Taguchi to the list of big leaguers wearing “toe socks“, according to this story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch…

I think that even though we have color TV now, it is still much easier to tell the teams apart when one of them is wearing white. A lot of times two colored jerseys wouldn’t be a problem. However, if a black team were playing a navy team I could see it being a problem telling them apart. I would say keep the whites and keep them at home with about a month every year of the colors at home.

On the Eyre jersey issue, if you go to google and type in “scott willie eyre jersey” the first article should give a good explanation regarding the half and half jersey. The article is titled “Brothers in Arms” and discusses a similar jersey they made for their mom and dad when Willie was with the Twins.

It was for more than just the original 6 games. I’ve seen pics of the Nords/Hawks where Chicago is wearing the barberpole.
As for the home/away, up until this past year the ECHL wore whites in the first half and darks after the all star break. Revenue!

I just noticed on that Bruins page… comparing the vintage crest in the timeline and the one at the top right of the page, the ‘BOSTON’ and the ‘BRUINS’ are placed differently.
But I suppose we’ll find out which one it’s supposed to be later today.

I think I still prefer this previous NHL shield.

You’re right. The original six teams wore their throw backs instead of then current jerseys at home, then if playing an original six team on the road, they brought em with too.

I prefer the one with Boston in larger letters. You can already tell that the animal is a bear/bruin, so why do you need to scream it out instead of emphasizing the city?

In the NY-Penn League All-Star Game uni gallery, it really looks wrong for Miguel Abreu of Bowie (fifth slide) to be wearing an “Orioles 5″ uni, when this is retired for Brooks Robinson. I am surprised that the teams allowed retired numbers to be worn.
