The College World Series is currently taking place in Omaha, which happens to be the home base of reader Bryan Redemske. Bryan’s a longtime Ticker contributor (he works at a newspaper, so he often sees wire-service photos before I do, and he once forwarded me the amazing shot of a Nebraska pitcher with a vulgarity on his underbrim, which almost ran in his paper until they Photoshopped it at the last minute), but I’ve never seen him as jazzed up as he is for the CWS. As he put it in an e-mail to me the other day, “Fire up the F-150, round up the kids, park on some guy’s lawn for $15, and bring the SPF 50. It’s time for some ping.”
Bryan’s prepared a pretty detailed assessment of the CWS teams. So without further ado, I hereby turn over the floor to him (with the caveat that he wrote this on Sunday, before any teams had been eliminated):
Some general observations: Most of the teams wear stirrups, which is cool. Most of them even have them on right. A lot of guys wear flat bills. Memo to flat-billed guys: You look like idiots. Signed, Everybody.
As for the specific team uniforms, we have to start with Cal State Fullerton, which is easily the class of this year’s CWS uniforms. They’ve had the same design for a while now, and for good reason. While some don’t like orange and blue, I think it works. Orange is used only as an accent color, which makes it much more tolerable. The grays are pretty solid, too. I’m generally not a huge fan of gray pinstripes in any application, and the Fullerton wordmark is on the small side, but there are bigger fish to fry in Omaha. The blue alternates are great, too.
The high of Fullerton, unfortunately, leads to the disappointing low of Oregon State. The Beavers have a serious identity crisis: Half their gear is made by Wilson, the other half by Nike, so nothing matches. The Nike pinstriped grays are just short of criminal. Huge rear number, too. And then the “OS” hat … it didn’t match either. And the OSU hat, their regular lid, also doesn’t match anything. The only thing that saves the team from disaster is its standard white uniform.
Arizona State has a pretty good thing going right now. Their primary home and away uniforms are simple and classy. Basically, just change the cream to gray, and you have the roadies. There’s a yellow jersey, though, so they’re not entirely without fault [and let’s not forget the maroon version — PL].
On some level, I’m sure it’s really cool to have “Eaters” on your jersey, as the UC Irvine Anteaters do. Unfortunately, I think it’s the same level as those white South Carolina hats that just say “Cocks.” Every high school baseball player within two hours of Omaha is pining for a UC Irvine shirt that says “Go Eaters” or “Eaters All the Way!” or maybe “Eaters for Life.” Anyway, the Anteaters’ colors are pretty great — blue and white mainly, with a little bit of gold in there — but their uniforms are a total mess. The home whites are clearly based on the MLB batting practice template of a few years ago, complete with contrasting shoulder gussets and piping; the roadies are a gray version of the homes, but with more yellow. The caps are the only thing good about the entire wardrobe.
Mississippi State coach Ron Polk is old-school. You’d think he’d prefer the classic look, like how Stanford has had the same uniforms for about 400 years. Well, you’d be thinking wrong. Of the Bulldogs’ three uniforms, the only constant is the hat — the classic interlocking MS in white on a maroonish background. It should be easy to build a uni around that, but apparently it’s not. The home whites have “State” across the chest, in a strange, oddly spaced font. The number font, however, is totally different. And crappy. And there’s weird piping and contrast-colored inserts on the sleeves and armpits. The alternate maroon jersey has the same contrasting pattern (in gray, this time), but a completely different “State” and number font. Finally, the all-gray uniform harkens to days past — nice, but what’s up with the thick-ass piping?
North Carolina is one of Nike’s black-jerseyed “elite” teams, and that design turned out to be even uglier than expected. When that jersey stays hidden, however, the Tar Heels are pretty easy on the eyes. Their look is, if nothing else, pretty consistent, with a nice vertically arching “Carolina” on three of their jerseys (sleeveless white, sleeveless gray, sleeved blue), and the sleeved whites and grays have “Tar Heels” in cursive. The latter two have some seriously thick piping, and don’t look near as good as the first three.
I like Rice’s simple, classy uniforms. The whites have “Rice” in an Old English font on the chest; the grays have “Rice” in an Old English font on the chest. Are you noticing the consistency here? The only way Rice can go wrong is by wearing the blue jersey, which has some seriously bad shoulder stripes that take away from a simple design.
Louisville has been the source of some nasty-looking uniforms over the years, but I was only moderately offended when I saw the Cardinals’ baseball togs. The black jersey and cap are very simple, but the white vests are really simple. But what the hell is that extra triangle of black doing in the armpit? And white shoes? Please. They work in very few places. At least it’s after Memorial Day. [Brian submitted this piece before the Cardinals’ red jersey made its appearance, but I think we can safely say that he would not approve of the shoulder stripes. — PL]
Talk about a Herculean effort! Serious thanks to Bryan for what is probably the most in-depth analysis of college baseball uniforms anyone’s ever written, and bonus thanks to Jesse Gavin, who attended a few CWS games and provided several of the pictures I linked to.

Plumber’s Job Available in DC: Leaks of sensitive information are a way of life in Washington. The Capitals discovered that yesterday, when several views of their new jersey (no, not this bogus one) began circulating on the web. By now many of you may have seen them, but I’ve decided not to show them here, because (a) the colors are off, (b) the uni numbers, pants, and socks aren’t visible, so it’s hard to get the full effect, and (c) the team was nice enough to invite me to the official uni unveiling on Friday, and even let me designate a surrogate to attend in my place when I said I couldn’t make it myself, so it’d be bad manners to spread the leak further. I’ll have plenty to say when the full uni is unveiled.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Yet another glitch for the Giants, who called up Luis Figueroa on Monday and then sent him up to bat with no name on his back. … Interesting article here (forwarded by Mark Snider) about the minor league Boise Hawks’ new uniforms, including the following tidbit: “Boise has new uniforms, logos and color scheme this season, moving away from the blue, white and red it used to wear. However, as a Chicago Cubs farm team, the team must wear blue cleats — it’s an organizational dictate — all Cubs’ minor league teams must wear blue shoes.” … More football players playing softball, this time at Brett Favre’s annual charity event (full photo gallery here, courtesy of Jeff Ash). … Nice catch by Chris Creamer, who documented this case of inconsistent Rs. … Norm Johnson checks in with a good story: “I was watching the Pirates vs. Mariners game tonight, 6/19. Mariners announcer Dave Niehaus had an interesting uniform tidbit about the ‘79 All-Star Game, which was played in the Kingdome. Apparently, Reggie Jackson’s uniform arrived in time for the game itself, but not in time for the American League team picture. According to Niehaus, he posed for the AL team picture in a Mariners jersey!” Anyone got a photo of this? … Nicole Haase was in Baltimore over the weekend, and noted approvingly that the Orioles’ mascot wears bona fide stirrups (but also, unfortunately, has a bad case of cap logo creep). … UConn is looking for a new uni supplier (with thanks to Keith Thibault). … First-hand report from a source on the field at Shea Stadium, who writes: “Jeff Cirillo had his fly open during his last at bat on Tuesday, and then he zipped it up after the first pitch.” The latter maneuver, alas, isn’t visible in the game video. … Proud Portland resident Jeremy Brahm has provided some shots of the interesting skyline-patterend jersey worn by the Portland Winterhawks this past season (additional pics here and here). The team also had a special 25th-anniversary Saturday jersey, as seen here, here, here, here, and here. … Take a hockey player off the ice and he totally loses his mind (disturbing find by Vince Grzegorek).

During last night’s broadcast, Howie Rose (maybe it was Tom McCarthy) stated that Justin Morneau wears number 33 in honor of Patrick Roy. He said that Morneau was a goalie in Canada while growing up.

North Carolina also has gray hats to match the gray tops. So if we’re counting, they have three hats pictured and the gray hat makes four. A bit much. Meanwhile, Louisville looks awful with the red hat paired with the black undersleeves of the vest (can’t we just ban vests, period?). And I think that UCI (it’s too cluttered) and Miss. State (ditto) hats look horrible, but that fits in with the rest of both teams’ uniforms.
One more item, Arizona State went with the 70s Padres/A’s style of yellow socks under dark stirrups, along with yellow caps and maroon tops against UCI last night. I kept waiting to see Barry Bonds pop out of the dugout.

Don’t know if this has been mentioned before, but I saw something I’ve never seen before on SportsCenter last night when they were discussing the Tampa Bay Bucs. Has anyone ever seen a team use that little horizontal line that some people put through their “7″s and “Z”s in a uniform number? The Bucs do on their practice uniforms. Just looks odd to me. You can see it in a photo on this page.
Also, did anyone see the Arizona State Coaching staff in omaha has their names and titles embroidered on the side of their caps? No photo, sorry.

Those Bucs’ number fonts are pretty wild. I’m going to have to totally disagree with the above post about how the UC Irvine look terrible. Some general observations: Most of the teams wear stirrups, which is cool. Most of them even have them on right.
That ASU player’s sock and stirrups looks a little too perfect — like it’s a one-piece with the maroon “stirrup” sewn onto the gold sock. I’m not complaining, though, the Devils have one of the best uniforms in college baseball.

I gotta say, I hate those 70s style high stirrups. I’m a fan of the stirrups, but it’s gotta be low, more stirrup than sani for me.
I do hate it a little less with the yellow sanitary sock though, so Arizona State isn’t all bad with that.
Goddamn I miss the striped Red Sox stirrups.

Ah yes, the CWS. I used to enjoy attending it when I lived in the area. I don’t think that the rest of the country realizes how much this event means to Omaha. It is like its version of Mardi Gras in New Orleans or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Chicago.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Chicago - I hope you mean the real one on the South Side and not the impostor downtown parade. The South Side parade is a yearly event for me as it takes place a mile from my childhood home. It’s more important than Christmas to my family.
RE: Brad May
Being a hockey player who played through college and summers with NHL guys, this look doesn’t suprise or jar me. When you get off the ice and take your equipment off your feet are sore (at least they are if you worked hard) and so sandles are a logical choice to wear when leaving the rink. You wear em enough and it becomes habbit. I am surprised he had flip flops on though and not Bauer sandles seen here http://www.hockeymon... which many hockey players tend to gravitate toward. I would routinley leave the rink in the middle of the winter wearing my sandles. Since my playing days are over though, I’ve moved away from that fashon trend.

Memo to fans that think flat-billed guys look stupid. That is how a hat is worn on the West Coast! If some jerk-off from Alabama comes rolling in and has a huge curve in his bill, I too look at him like he is strange. Take a minute and think about which teams are wearing the flatt bill. Hmmmmm, might it be Fullerton, Irvine, and others that are from the WEST COAST. Give it a rest. Anthony Reyes did it in St. Louis and remember, he is from the West Coast. Different people like different things. Thats how its done out here.

I love the grey Rice unis, both pinstripe Fulerton unis (hate the blue alternates though, why where them when the two primary are so good??), and hate Ariz. St’s yellow and maroon alts.

I know PL’s feelings on purple, but this http://i209.photobuc... Cloquet jersey is a classic in MN. To see one up close the beard is fuzzy. To my knowledge, these jerseys haven’t changed in years that’s what makes them so cool in an ugly way. The team I was a part of the coaching staff for 4 years, Forest Lake, really needs to send in their new jerseys as they ones listed on the site are about 5-7 years out of date. We had NY Ranger pattened jerseys till this year when they changed it up to a Montreal vintage home style for our home with a big FL instead of the C. Our road is a goofy looking gold jersey that is only goofy becasue of the ugly patch they chose for the chest. Sorry no pictures on me.
#26 by Chris on 06.20.07 10:04 am |
I dig the UC Irvine unis, too. The sleeves are a little much, but bearable. And I think the hat logo looks great.
I’ve always hated the Rice jerseys. The Old English font looks good as a single letter (Detroit Tigers, for one), but I don’t like it for the whole name.
#27 by Elena E on 06.20.07 10:04 am |
I thought ASU’s uni’s last night were the ugliest I’ve seen in ages. I even thought they were showing a clip from the 80s, when they showed an out of focus shot of one of their long-haired pitchers. Nothing with that much yellow ever looks good. If Rice and Irvine make the finals, it will be the dullest uni match-up ever.
#28 by Sage Confucius on 06.20.07 10:05 am |
That does not mean it looks good.
The brim should have at least a little curve to it. The extreme, redneck style that looks as though the brim was wrapped around a broom handle for a week looks equally bad. And from a practical standpoint, a curved brim will better keep a low sun out of your eyes.
The Owls uniforms look the best of the remaining teams. Being a Houston native I am, of course, pulling for them. GO OWLS!
#29 by Natron on 06.20.07 10:06 am |
I think most on the site are actually probably out of date at this point… I know the Johnson one I referenced is also obsolete as they now wear maroon jerseys with an arched “Governors” across the front with the number under it.
The issue I have with Cloquet is that they wear the white helmets even with the dark jerseys. I just hate that look. But I’ll agree with your thoughts on remaining unchanged. They are a classic jersey.
#30 by Natron on 06.20.07 10:08 am |
This was rumored on this board board a lot, but nothing was ever referenced as a quote from Justin. There are quotes around of him quoting that he wears 33 because of Roy… if I wasn’t at work, I’d dig them up. I can look when I get home.

#34 by Joe Drennan on 06.20.07 10:12 am |
The reason for the white helmet is equipment is expensive and I don’t know of any high school program with home and away helmets. I think white is better than purple and will take it any day.
As regard to the new Caps uni, I thought no team was going to have an alternate this year because an overhaul of 30 teams home and away was enough work as it is?
#35 by Joe H on 06.20.07 10:13 am |

Cretin kids have to clean up on the ice/field/court because their colors and logo are terrible. It’s hard to pick on them though when all they do is win state titles. The gold helmet works at Cretin because of the gold shoulders and the prominate use of gold as an accent. In Cloquet’s case though, gold is an accent, but not that prominent. To me it seems more an afterthough. The more I think of gold helmets though, I can see it working.

Humorous tidbit I’ve just read, ever to jump onto a bit of Auburn news: President Bush held an NCAA National Champions ceremony on the White House lawn Monday. Three Auburn teams (2007 men’s and women’s swimming/diving and 2006 women’s track and field) were recognized. As customary, each team presented the President with a little something from the team, usually a uniform bit. While the AU track team gave President Bush a typical jacket/t-shirt, the swim teams weren’t so conventional with their gifts: a beach towel with his name embroidered on it and his very own, well… team uniform.

Actually I saw it a lot when I lived in Western NY and I see it all the time here in NE. i always wear flip flops, birks or other sandals. with shorts, pants, khakis or jeans. if it was possible id wear them year round!
im surprised there was not a mention of brady quinn’s performance monday in cleveland throwing out the first pitch… a bit of sneaker malfunction.
but it brought up another question…
what is current first pitch jersey protocol?
do you wear a jersey of the home team playing or one of the team you represent (for athletes, not entertainers)?
ive seen both…

Memo to fans that think flat-billed guys look stupid. That is how a hat is worn on the West Coast! If some jerk-off from Alabama comes rolling in and has a huge curve in his bill, I too look at him like he is strange. Take a minute and think about which teams are wearing the flatt bill. Hmmmmm, might it be Fullerton, Irvine, and others that are from the WEST COAST. Give it a rest. Anthony Reyes did it in St. Louis and remember, he is from the West Coast. Different people like different things. Thats how its done out here.
Lutter,
You must be kidding, simply because there are a few goofball teens and early twenty-somethings who wear their caps with flat bills does not mean that is how we do things out here in the West. A cap’s bill is definitely meant to have some curve to it- decide for yourself which looks better:

Those Bucs numbers are interesting for sure…do they plan to use them in-season? Or are they only for the practice jerseys?

This is not horrible. It’s just too bad the unis don’t match up.

The UC-I bookstore has one,
It’s mesh and has limited sizing though…

Good question. It almost seems like the person gets a home team jersey, but if they’re already wearing their actual jersey for whatever sport they play, they probably just wear that.
This might be my favorite first pitch:

Re: Flip flops and jeans
Here in Western Mass, that look is more the norm than sneaks and jeans. It also provides motivation for a pedicure to sport my team’s colors. My own little “summer uniform”!

regarding CWS unis:
note to Fullerton-solid grey pants with the blue tops, please….pinstripe pants look lousy with solid top.
UNC: ditch the black! also, Tar Heels in script=no good. needs to be a different font. the “T” looks like a “7″ as in
7ar Heels.

Brendan-
Believe me, I can live with that much of a curve with no problem.
I guess there is a pretty wide range of what is considered flat and curved.

Not sure if the Syracuse Orangemen count.

Flip flops with jeans is common in the south too, of course not in the summer; it’s too hot. But if it’s not too cold in the winter, you see all kinds of people wearing flip flops and jeans.

Plus Delta State has the Fighting Okra as a mascot, and yes, okra is technically a fruit.

I have a “Uni-Related” question for all of those that have been watching the CWS. IS anyone as big of a fan of Erin Andrews’ “Uni” as I am. I love the hot blonde strolling through the stadium. Thats about the only thing ESPN has done right with this CWS. BRING BACK HAROLD REYNOLDS!!!!

Those Rice baseball uniforms are so cool I’d like to take them behind the middle school and get them pregnant.
You 30 Rock fans might appreciate that little joke.

I’d say they take more after these folks, who are also a big reason for so many older US universities (Virginia, Tennessee, etc.) featuring orange as a color.

I was there last night when ASU wore those 80’s retro jerseys and they were real stirups. My uncle and I had a disscussion about the stirrups before the game started–he said the left-fielder was wearing them just a little high but I said they were just right. I was also digging the pullover jersey.

it started on the left side when he posted it and apparently has been moved to the right.

Cool picture of the All Star originals. Upon closer inspection, I noticed there were no women in the stands! I know we didn’t get the right to vote until 1920, but, couldn’t we go to games? :)

I was in Chicks last friday in El Segindo, CA (close to LAX). I didn’t notice any UC Irvine stuff. Are they supposed to have stuff there?
Just incase anybody doesn’t know about Chicks, it is a great sporting goods store, they have a lot of high end stuff you wouldn’t find in a place like the sports authority or dick’s.
Also, I hate the flat brim look, and I live in LA. For some reaseon they always seemed to be worn by pimply faced kids (I’m 23 so my opinion isn’t really based on a generation gap or anything).

That’s funny — it was on the left! But they moved it.

How could you not like Erin Andrews? Harold Reynolds just signed with MLB.com last week. He’ll be working for them after the all-star break.

I met him about 5 years ago at a dance club in Williamsport, PA (during the LLWS). It was really dark in the club, and my friend and I weren’t sure if it was him, but we figured it had to be, so we went up to him, and my friend uttered, like a dork “I love you on Baseball Tonight!”

Maybe I don’t get it guys… you can have all the right parts and still look like crap. Arizona State’s unis are flat out hideous!
