I don’t mean to pick on Giants equipment manager Mike Murphy — he’s been with the team for nearly 50 years, and he probably has his hands full finding caps to fit Barry Bonds’s ever-enlarging cranium — but the team had some major slip-ups on the uni front last week. First, as reported here last week, Dan Ortmeier’s left-sleeve team logo patch was missing; then Fred Lewis’s right-sleeve All-Star Game patch was similarly unaccounted for. The kicker came on Friday, when Randy Messenger made his Giants debut with no name on his jersey.
Messenger had been traded late the night before, so the Giants had less than 24 hours to prepare a jersey for him. And yes, the trade happenedjust as the team was leaving New York and heading to Philly. Still, it shouldn’t have been that hard to get a jersey lettered and ready to go. Couldn’t they just have gotten one made at the local Sports Authority or something? Messenger didn’t pitch on Saturday or Sunday (no doubt due to embarrassment), so it’s not clear if his jersey has finally been brought up to code.
Interestingly, the Messenger nameplate snafu took place almost exactly a year to the day after the Giants misspelled Eliezer Alfonzo’s name on his jersey. Maybe the team should just take a week off every season during this time of year.
To be fair, the Giants aren’t the only MLB team with uni-related problems lately. As noted in Friday night’s comments, the Brewers’ right-sleeve anniversary patch was missing from Jeff Suppan’s jersey on Friday.
And whatever quality control issues MLB teams are having, it’s nothing compared to what’s happening to the Philadelphia Soul of the AFL. Reader Rob W. was at Philly’s Friday-night game and snapped pics of several players with numerals that had peeled off, as seen here, here, and here. First time I’ve seen anything like that since the Colts’ 2005 opener, when lineman Corey Simon had one of his numerals ripped off of his jersey (an oddity I no longer have a photo of, unfortunately, although I do have shots of of Miguel Tejada with the “1″ coming off of his jersey after a head-first slide in early 2005 [he played the rest of that game as No. 0]).

Manny’s skull cap is definately on inside out, you can see the stitching there on the top of his head. Manny just being Manny like Manny has never been Manny before.
As for the MLB logo as an American flag, they have been doing that since September 11. I have a few stickers I picked up at a Pirates game and and a lapel pin from a visit to MLBHQ in New York. I will try to hunt down either.

In Friday night’s game vs. the Rockies, Reds starting pitcher Bobby Livingston clearly had his left sleeve tailored shorter than his right. It was not just bunched up at the shoulder like we’ve seen Todd Jones do. Pictures have proven elusive so far.

So HBO had some kind of baseball weekend or something as I was watching the horrible Major League II when I noticed a White Sox player, their big bat in the movie, was wearing a flapless helmet. One of the local American Legion baseball teams is known as the hard hats. Instead of wearing baseball hats while in the field, they all wear helmets, similar to the flapless helmet. It is quite a site.

Uniwatch fans a little help is needed:
I have been an avid reader for years, and upon being faced with this following problem and know nowhere else to turn except to ask the readers for any assistance. The problem is as such, my boss is turning 70 this summer, and since he was a great basketball player 50 years ago, he played and coached for 4 different final four teams, I thought it would be nice to get his old college or high school jersey made and framed for him. Hailing from Philadelphia I thought it would be easy to find somewhere to get one made up, but apparently basketball jerseys today are mostly made up of the cheap looking dazzle material and not plain mesh. I found a custom lettering guy, but need a plain black or maroon basketball jersey to put the letters on. My question follows, is there anyone or anywhere you can point me to find such an item. I appreciate your help, whatever it is. Thank you.

I think you are asking the difference between a fake and real authentic jersey. I know any jersey made in China is not an actual authentic jersey. The tag in the jersey says “Made in Korea”
It was bought at a reputable location. The Kroger stores in the Indiana and Illinoia areas had Super Bowl items. The jerseys in the other stores had silkscreen numbers and names on them. The jerseys at the store I work at did not. I know, having worked for Kroger for quite a few years, that it’s a fairly regular occurence to get the the wrong item shipped to the store.
Replica or authentic won’t change my enjoyment of wearing the jersey, I just thought that it was odd that we had a nicer jersey selling for the same price as an obvious replica, and was looking for any tell tale signs of authenticity.

I don’t think the smudge on Tito Francona’s cap is an ‘11.’ He had it on there before the injury on Saturday, and I think it’s been there for a few weeks. I remember seeing it during the Wednesday night game against Cleveland, and I’ve been trying to get a screen cap of it ever since.
I thought for the briefest of instants that it was a white T.F. (Terry Francona), but have a hard time imagining the manager misplaces his lid a lot. Anyone?

In those European football uniforms its interesting to note that the all the teams do not match the NFL or NCAA colors as the Gamecocks were powder blue while the Jets were in Redskin colors. Also the Gamecocks had their website on the front of their jerseys.

If it is embroidered entirely into the jersey I would bet it’s a fake.

RE: real or fake NFL jerseys, the authentic Reebok jerseys have a silver stripe sewn on the inside of the tag at the back of the collar. Like if you would fluff out the tag so that you could put a finger through it or whatever, there will be a silver stripe on the inside of the tag.

Yet another interesting uni-fact from the Yanks/Sox game sunday night…I saw a closeup of Jason Varitek during the pre-inning warm up pitches, and noticed he has the nickname “Tek” on the lower left side of the padding on his face mask. It appears to be stitched into the padding, not drawn on. Couldn’t find a picture of it, but there has to be one floating around

Those Price is Right jerseys are just garish enough to work! I especially like the player’s first name on a tag on the front! Did they have the guys write them themselves?
The back is a little unbalanced, though; the “Pick me, Bob!” line seems a little too low. The number could use a white border, too.
Randy Messenger’s situation is yet another piece of evidence in the case against player names on uniforms. The jersey would look just as good with only a number, like at home, and with his name being displayed prominently on the TV screen and on the scoreboard, everyone knows who he is.
I remember the Giants having the same problem years ago on the road. Someone (I think his number was 49) had just come over in a trade and had a nameless jersey. The Giants used arched lettering then, so maybe the expert in charge of that couldn’t be reached.
BTW, are the Giants’ numbers only six or seven inches tall? Maybe it’s just the lack of shadows/extra layers, but they look kind of small.

I was also batting around the idea of cashing on on the Uni Watchers’ endless uni design knowledge/opinions for help in coming up with “unis” for a huge event… Wifflin’ For Wishes – a charity wiffleball tournament. I think it might be cool for our team to finally have the first Uni Watch readers’ designed uni!
Two problems right off the bat would be:
#1 – Budget. This is obviously a 1 day, oddball event, so we’re not looking at embroidered, chain stitched, wool jerseys. We’re probably looking at some color of t-shirt, or 3/4 jersey or something of the like. Also, finding somebody who can help us actually get them designed/printed up.
#2 – Because of the budget, we’re probably somewhat limited in overall design options. We’re probably looking at getting color schemes, and input on what the logo/design of the jersey should be. Maybe if we do names on the back, we can throw in the ever-popular “vertically vs. radially vs. straight” lettering option.
Anyway, it’s just a thought at this point. I really think it would be cool to have a reader designed uni (and quite honestly, the only reason I’m tossing this around is mostly because I have no idea of even where to begin!), but I’m not sure how I’d go about implementing any of this, and certainly don’t want to use Paul’s blog to further my own personal activities, so if I can come up with a plan for this, I’ll keep you all posted.

Don’t know if this has been posted on here yet, but Fulham of the English Premiership unveiled their new unis last week:
“Fulham Football Club has today announced a major four-year kit supply deal with Nike, which will see the world famous swoosh logo on the Premiership Club’s shirts, until 2011.”
The new kit is very basic, and has had a pretty solid love it or hate it response–they say it’s intended to echo the jersey worn by the 1903 team, and that the away jersey will be black-and-red-striped. They’ve got a new sponsor (LG, the Korean electronics giant) and the deal with Nike is a tremendous upgrade over their previous supplier from 06-07, Airness (a French company who screwed up so many times with quality and availability issues that they’ll be lucky to get another deal from anyone).

Apropos of absolutely nothing, I happened to catch some of Fear Strikes Out on TV this weekend and noticed that Anthony Perkins’s (playing Jimmy Piersall) Red Sox jersey was different from all his teammates. His had no piping down the placket and different sleeve stripes. Had to be intentional, but why? to make it easier to pick him out on screen, perhaps?

Did anyone else watch game 3 of of the Cup finals and see Jason Spezza have to switch jerseys with (I think) Chris Neil? I just caught the tail end of him switching back to his usual 19 and never heard why it happened. The announcer said they must have had trouble finding the second 19 in the back, but why were they looking for it anyways?

I know everybody here always loves those stirrups with the team logo on them that jamie moyer wears. Well i spotted them in an odd place last night, Lou Ford was wearing them for the Twins in the movie Little Big League. You can see little glimpses of them throughout the movie but in the last scene wear he squares off with Randy Johnson(wearing fake stirrups by the way) they get the close up they deserve while he steps into the box. No pics because im technologically retarded, but im sure someone could hunt them down. it struck me as one of the more stirrup acurate films of all time because every member of the twins is showing a little stirrup at least.

Also, the kids got a complete tour of the Stadium. My sisters went on the tour, and we have puctures of them in the Mets dugout, walking the outfield warning track, and running the bases. Keep in mind, this was during the horrid Bonilla – Coleman – Saberhagen era, and the Mets were very kid-friendly at the time.
I know they still do the base-running thing after select Sunday games, but as far as Stadium tours I don’t know. Somehow that kid/fan-friendly stuff always seems to be big when the team is doing really bad and they want to bring fans out to the ol’ ballpark.
Not meaning to be a wise-ass or anything, but did you think about calling the Mets and finding out if they do Stadium tours……? No one can answer that question better than they can.

todd k., at the beginning of the baseball season, I proposed a drinking game. Every time you read/hear someone say “Manny being Manny” you have to drink. I will add, if you hear it twice in an inning, you have to finish what’s in your cup. At least you can have fun listening for the dreaded phrase.
Colorado: The black jerseys look better in the close-ups, but I still think the unis aren’t very pleasing to the eye.

The best way to find out if a given team conducts ballpark tours is to go to mlb.com, click on the team, then the ballpark link. If it shows tours, you will see the hours & cost, and be able to pre-order tickets. Most have handicapped access too. I believe only a few teams do not have tours, and Shea may be one of them.

About Manny’s headwear: That thing is the type of headwear which you fold over to face the logos out (and right-side-up), like a winter cap/beanie.
Think of it this way. In that pic with the B showing, hold that cap exactly like it is. Put your hand up inside it, and pull the top straight down, so you’re pulling it inside-out, but stop pulling before the logos start folding in. Then turn the whole unit upside-down, and you’ve got a regular hat, with the edge folded up and out, with logos upright. The B and the New Era are not backwards in the pic, they are upside-down. The top of the hat, in the pic, is the “inner” stitching, because that would be the inside when you do to it what I describe above.

Similar to the Red Wings jerseys being stolen, when I was in college, our first game of the season, the visiting team’s new jerseys hadn’t arrived yet as they were getting brand new patterns. Well, instead of traveling with their old ones, they simply wore our road uniforms. Us players were so upset that another team was wearing our sweaters we made sure that we won the game and took a few extra hits in the corners.

The NHL is planning another outdoor game next season. So far there are three known games played outdoors in North America, one in the NHL, The Heritage Game – Oilers and Canadians in Edmonton – Commonwealth Stadium back in 2003. Two college games, Michigan and Michigan State at East Lansing in 2001 and last year Wisconsin and Ohio State at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
The teams, dates and venues have not been determined but here are some suggestions:
Rangers and Devils – Yankee Stadium, it could be the last non-baseball game played at Yankee Stadium
Red Wings and Blackhawks – Wrigley Field, original six match-up where the Chicago Bears use to play
or Blackhawks and Red Wings – Tigers Stadium or Comerica Park
Canucks and Avalanche – Invesco Field, home of the Denver Broncos
Coyotes and Stars – Texas Stadium, nothing like playing hockey in the home of the Dallas Cowboys under the hole in the roof
Here are some extreme ideas:
Capitals and Penguins – Red Square in Russia, this game can showcase the Russian’s best Ovechkin and Malkin, idea came up in an exhibition charity game played recently
Here is even more of an extreme idea,
Sharks and Kings – Manhattan Beach or some other beach in Southern California, set up a rink where pro-beach volleyball is played
Probably the beach idea won’t happen but it would be kind of cool.

I’m surprised that nobody has mentioned this yet:
MLB came up with the Stars & Stripes batter logo after 9/11. It appeared on many of the fields behind home plate. I believe it was on the field in the 2001 World Series.
It also appeared on the Diamondbacks Clubhouse t-shirts that year.

That article badly, BADLY needed captions. Not only did they need to defend the Notre Dame Green Jersey selection (IMHO, this bordered on blasphemy), but the Delaware made little sense. If there was a caption line “Michigan just called, they want their jerseys back!”, maybe it would have made sense. As is, it was just dumb.

That was kind of my point. The jersey was originally $80, but since most people don’t look for that kind of stuff in a grocery store I was able to get it for $40. At a later trip to Dick’s sporting goods, and having seen the jerseys they were selling at the other Krogers in town, I thought the batch my store recieved might have been authentic (fabric letters opposed to silkscreen for the same price).

My buddy and I were both at college from ‘95-’99 for the Tribe’s World Series runs, and we were a little too young for the Browns and Cavs runs of the late-80s and early-90s to know these occasions don’t come around often, so we were determined to make the most of this.
I believe we set the world record for most hugs and high fives in one hour to complete strangers, and I’m hoping my voice recovers by Thursday.
The scene was amazing… all downtown streets clogged with celebrating fans, who were being so well behaved that the only thing the mounted police had to deal with was clearing paths for parking garages to get out, as the mass of humanity stopped any chance of “traffic” for large periods of time. It was a night I’ll never forget.

The NHL is planning another outdoor game next season. So far there are three known games played outdoors in North America, one in the NHL, The Heritage Game – Oilers and Canadians in Edmonton – Commonwealth Stadium back in 2003. Two college games, Michigan and Michigan State at East Lansing in 2001 and last year Wisconsin and Ohio State at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
Don’t forget the Rangers/Kings outdoors in Las Vegas during the pre-season in 1991.

a large group of my friends and i are putting together a mini golf championship in hopes of it becoming an annual event.

Don’t feel like going through all 180 posts, so sorry if this has been repeated. Posada (most likely) painted his nails white so that when he makes the signs to the pitcher for which kind of pitch to throw, the pitcher can easily identify the signs. Especially if it was at night, it’d be hard to see one’s finegrs, so to make it easier you would paint your nails to stick out.
I’m pretty sure that’s why, my brother is a catcher and I remember hearing about this from somewher.

Authentic NFL Jerseys from Reebok are tagged as such and priced accordingly. The next best way to tell is the sleaves. The “replitentic” jerseys (which have all sewn on numbers) have actual sleaves like a shirt, while the authentic ones have elastic sleaves to fit over shoulder pads. The material is different too, but it is hard to tell unless you compare them side to side.
With respect to Mitchell & Ness Jerseys, on their website is a chat room called “is it real”, if you post a picture, they will tell you if it is real or not.
Outside of that price is a pretty good guide, if its $40 bucks its fake. It might be a good fake, but its still fake. The only exception I’m aware of is on eBay, where one store sells closeout M&N jerseys that are in fact real, and sometimes as little as $40.
Finally, back to the original post, I don’t think the NFL sells “on field” jerseys with the actual Super Bowl Patch. If they did, rest assured it would be a $400 item.

I was looking at pictures from the Saints Mini camp I noticed that some players were wearing something I’ve never seen before. On the high hook ups for the chin straps, instead of having them tacked in or just using a regular buckle, they use these white block things, which are clearly visible on the 9th, 11th, and 13th pictures in this series. I thought it may be from Schutt becauseit has an “S” on it , but I have no idea what it does or if it has any special purpose. Someone please fill me in!

You can’t get any more old school Mets or Orioles than that game …
Mets in home pinstripes, Orioles in away grays with “Baltimore” spelled out on the front, and their names on the back.
A game saving catch by the Mets’ Ron Swoboda.
And a full 10 innings pitched by future vintner George T. Seaver.
A true vintage broadcast by Curt Gowdy and Lindsey Nelson, in living color on the NBC Television Network.
No sound effects. No faux metal music. No black.
Just a day game.
Men still wore jackets and ties to the game!

I was all set to scorn the person who would bid on such a thing. I was going to use the phrase “a fool and his money are soon parted.” But then I realized, the alternative is paying $250 on MLB.com or $300 to Mitchell & Ness for something that probably didn’t cost $20 to make.
I am NOT defending counterfeiters or suggesting anyone buy knockoff jerseys, but I want to believe that the person buying this jersey is a huge Mets fan on a budget. It’s like when I see someone wearing a Majestic replica jersey at the ballpark with that half-assed lettering on the back that doesn’t even come close to looking real — sure, it’s ugly as hell, but maybe it was the best that person could afford. I didn’t mean to get all preachy on you, but I’m just sayin.
(The bidder is clearly not a Uni Watcher, as none of us would be bidding on a black Mets jersey in the first place, but that’s beside the point.)

Uniwatch could set up an entire “sub-blog” just focusing on the NCAA Softball World Series. Every time I turn on ESPN I see something weirder. Fake stirrups, white stirrups over white socks, visors, bizarre helmets, merit decals on helmets, cages on helmets, coaches wearing polo shirts and shorts. Its enough to make any uni-phile’s head spin.

I know one easy way to tell the difference b/w authentic and replica jerseys: The authentics always have the Majestic logo on the left sleeve; replicas always have it on the right sleeve. And the authentics always have the plain “M” logo; the replicas have the “M” logo and the word “Majestic” underneath it.
Some teams have different little nuances; for example, the St. Louis Cardinals road replicas have a white outline around the chest logo; the authentic does not. The Mets replicas have the numbers and letters in plain fabric; the authentics have them in tackel twill. The Yankees’ replicas have the player names on the back of the jerseys; the authentics do not. But unless you know what you’re looking for, the Majestic logo on the sleeves is the easiest way to tell.

And I don’t put much stock into that argument that you’re a “hardcore” fan only if you wear authentic jerseys and gear. My dad has been a hardcore Jets fan since the 1960’s, even before the Super Bowl Namath days, before some of you ere even born, straight through the dismal 80’s and the Kotite years. In all that time, the only jersey he has ever had is a replica jersey that he got for Christmas one year. Now I’m sure there are some kids out there who own 2,3, maybe even 4 or 5 authentic Jets jerseys, but I’ll be damned if they get categorized as “hardcore” fans more than my old man just because they spent hundreds of dollars on some jerseys.
Matt Damon is a hardcore Red Sox fan, regardless of whether he spends any of his millions on an authentic or replica jersey. I doubt he’s going to spend any sleepless nights fretting over the fact that some piker on a website called “Uni-Watch” made fun of his jersey; he’ll just enjoy his sweet box seats at Fenway.

This is probably the one millionth time I’ve said this, but the Carolina Panthers DO NOT wear teal…Their colors are Black,Silver and Blue! It is a lighter shade of blue, but in no way does it look teal.
