Between his own outfit, his wife’s outfit, and the victory wreath, Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti was a study in colors yesterday.
Happy Decoration Day, folks. I’ll be spending mine grilling, eating, and drinking in the back yard. Hope yours is similarly fun-packed. — Paul

I celebrated Memorial Day a little early. Last Saturday I scored my first ever 5950 at a flea market. A brand new all-teal Marlins cap, gray underbill and all.
So if I dip a curved brim in cold water, will it keep its curved shape?

Kinda weird hearing a guy with a name like Dario Franchitti speaking with a Scottish accent.

Does anybody know if the Mets have a schedule out for when they are going to wear a certain jersey?
#6 by Buckeye Mike on 05.28.07 12:07 pm |
At one point, those 2 almost got into each other and the guys calling it on fox made mention of the fact that mears looked like he didn’t know Jr was above him. Then DW joked about “well he’s in Camo(sp?), he couldn’t see Jr up there. Kind of dumb I know, but funny at the time. brought to mind all those t shirts that look like this. and for the mets, it been said a bunch on here, its up to that charlie samules or what ever his name is the equipment manager he decides when they wear what.
and thank you everyone who supposrts the freedom of this country, it hits a little closer here, being I live next to Beale AFB

Well, my Memorial Day started off in the best way possible. My beloved Derby County FC beats WBA to reach the promised land of the Premiership for next season. Not easy to follow them from San Diego, but I try my best.
Interestingly, I think they may have used their 2007/2008 shirts for the first time (unless it was just a one-off jersey).

the dale jr. camo thing… yeah i understand memorial day but its as bad as the padres camo look. save the camo for the armed forces.

Unfortunately, I’m spending Memorial Day at the office, but I’ll be at Citizens Bank Park tonight for Dollar Dog Night. As for Indy, was there a better moment yesterday then a sopping wet Ashley Judd jumping up and down in the pit? That’s worth a rain delay anyday.

I was not around for yesterday’s soccer discussion, but here’s a fun little incident of early logo creep. Netherlands’ sports teams have always been outfitted by adidas (although, in the most recent World Cup they wore Nike for some reason).
As you can see here, the 1974 Netherlands World Cup team was outfitted by adidas — notice the three stripes on the sleeves.
However, look at #14 on the far left of the photo. That is Johan Cruijff, the greatest soccer player of all time not named Pele. Notice he only has two stripes on his shirt. Cruijff had his own sponsorship deal with PUMA, and would tear one stripe off of all his adidas gear. adidas has always gotten around no logo rules by using a “design element” instead, so Cruijff stuck it to them.
PUMA & adidas have always been bitter rivals since being founded by two German brothers who hated each other, causing soccer hooligans vehemently to stick with their brand of choice, much like American rednecks stick with either Ford or Chevy.
Side note: Does anyone know why Cruijff is wearing #9 in one of the photos? Cruiff is to 14, as Jordan is to 23, Gretzky is to 99, and Elway is to 7.

I don’t know that they hated each other, but it’s an interesting history. Adi Dassler (AdiDas, get it) and Horst Dassler (Puma) pretty well owned the sport shoe scene in the 70s til you know who came along.

Watching the Braves and Brewers… A bunch of Milwaukee players have their cap flags on the back side of their hats, well behind the left ear. But not everyone is like that.
I like the flags on the caps, but they should just abandon this f*cking program if no one can wear them right (I suspect equipment managers who put these things on the caps are to blame, as opposed to New Era). It looks so sloppy. I’m sick of it.

FSN here in Dallas is showing a minor league baseball game between the Memphis Red Birds and the Round Rock Express, which is rare enough. But then in the 5th inning I saw something rarer still these days: Round Rock brought in reliever Travis Driskill, who wears eyeglasses (not sunglasses and not Eric Gagne style goggles, but eyeglasses) while pitching. The glasses appeared to be the same he’s wearing in his roster photo.

Not uni-related, but during the minor league broadcast there was a short interview with Hunter Pence from earlier in season (before he was called up the Majors) in which he talked about his time the previous season with Astros AA affiliate in Corpus Christi. During one game in Corpus against the Arkansas Travelers, the Travelers bullpen (which is located behind centerfield apparently) kept throwing crackers over the fence at Pence as a prank during the game. The crackers attracted so many birds that Pence said he could hardly move in any direction without stepping on one.

NESN in Boston had a AA matinée featuring the Portland Sea Dogs and the Reading Phillies, I thought Portland’s catcher John Otness’s catching helmet looked a little big. It also looks like he has two stickers - one of which appears to be larger than normal - on the back of his helmet, and no Sea Dog’s logo either. Unfortunately all I can find is the front view.

He wore 9 on a few occasions with the Netherlands national team, and when he was with Barcelona. Back then, a player didn’t have an assigned squad number; the starters always wore 1-11 (at the World Cup, you had an assigned number that you kept throughout the tournament). But Cruijff’s talent always defied putting him in a particular role.

I flipped by the Clemen’s minor league comeback on ESPN. I noticed his glove is no back opening( in which to stick a finger through) and it also has a large patch on it. The link below isn’t from today’s game, but shows what I am talking about with the glove. Sorry if this has been discussed. I tell you, Oakland is a tremendous value. Just tremendous. AT&T Park is the ultimate baseball throwback showplace, with perhaps the best view of any sports stadium in the world, of ANY sport.
But the ol’ concrete Oakland Coliseum, it’s great. The A’s have the hardest working staff around- the prices can’t be beat, and the atmosphere is great.

The whole camo thing has been kind of confusing to me at times. I don’t know what the line is between honoring the Armed Forces and stepping on their toes. More soccer news… American owned Aston Villa of the English premier league unveiled a new club crest as featured on the club’s website. Here is a copy of their previous crest. I happen to like the old one better. I also don’t quite understand ‘Prepared” being written on the bottom of the crest. It seems a little tacked on to me.
#64 by Robert on 05.28.07 10:14 pm |
Since the U.S. Army and the National Guard sponsor cars in NASCAR, I suspect that they did not mind the extra exposure and respect that came with several teams sporting camo paint schemes in yesterday’s race.

However, club mottos, like “Prepared” for Villa, are or were part of several club crests and lend to the heraldic nature of English football crests.

Anyone of the opinion that Ashley Judd, despite being an alumnus, first heard of UK hockey roughly 10 minutes before the shoot?
Me too.
#71 by Teebz on 05.29.07 1:43 am |
It’s comments like the above that will keep it there too. What do you have against hockey? What has hockey done to you? You don’t see us hockey lovers coming on here and tearing down a “sport” where you’re forced to make 2000 left turns on an oval while being forced to urinate in one’s fire-proof crash suit, do you? Hockey lovers can appreciate the glory and difficulty of winning a vehicular endurance race, and none of us have crapped on Dario’s achievement.
Comments like the “ugly red headed step child of america” are certainly unnecessary. If you’re going to say “relax, it was a joke”, you certainly don’t convey that with your choice of words. If you can’t say something nice… you know the rest.

It’s not that uncommon to be Scottish and of Italian descent. It’s mainly due to the two World Wars.
Dario’s not the only famous sporting example though, off the top of my head there’s Paul di Giacomo, Lou Macari and Dominc Matteo. I think they’ve all been capped at international level as well, although di Giacomo may only have been at under-21 level.
#75 by Michael Churchill on 05.29.07 7:17 am |
I don’t know why it happened, but I have a couple of Scottish friends who have Italian names, so it’s not that uncommon.
