Before we get started with today’s entry: I ended up making an important addition to yesterday’s ESPN column at about noon eastern. If you read it prior to then and weren’t keeping track of yesterday morning’s comments, you may want to check it out again, because the mystery of Nomar’s pin (and Manny’s too!) has been solved.
Now then: Got a note the other day from longtime Uni Watch contributor Bryan Redemske, who’s noticed something really interesting:
Mark Buehrle has been wearing cycling arm-warmers under his jersey, instead of a long-sleeved undershirt — specifically, these. You can see the blacked-out Pearl Izumi logo on his left sleeve in this pic — mid-forearm, facing down. And the logo is in very plain sight here. A couple of my buddies have those arm-warmers, and the way they shine in the light is exactly the same.
Coupla thoughts here: First of all, I had no idea there was even such a thing as cycling arm-warmers. Second, this brings up the interesting issue of players using equipment intended for use in another sport. Leaving aside the issue of footwear (there’s a lot cross-sport action there), the first things that come to mind are football facemasks, which have been worn by several baseball players and at least one hockey player. And then there’s Dave Parker, who at various times wore a football facemask and a hockey goalie’s mask (although the latter was only for one plate appearance, which resulted in a walk).
There have also been lots of baseball players who’ve worn golf gloves, and football players who’ve worn batting gloves or scuba gloves. Plus I’m sure there are plenty of other cross-sport examples that I’m not thinking of — let’s have ‘em.
Attention Jeremy Brahm!: Got a rather frustrating note yesterday from Ben Wood, as follows:
If you’re ever back in the Twin Cities, you should check out the Ragstock Warehouse in Minneapolis’s downtown warehouse district. Their large selection of used clothes includes a nice collection of Japanese baseball jerseys (which I assume are from high schools or amateur leagues), most of which are under $10 [additional pics here, here, and here]. Some of them have those pinned-on squares of fabric holding the rear uniform number, and some even have all the lettering done up with black Magic Marker. Sorry I didn’t send these to you before your trip to Minneapolis, but the pics have been stuck on my girlfriend’s camera for some time.
Sigh. Now he tells me.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Good article here about tennis equipment sponsorships (with thanks to Dominic Litten). … Mike Milici — the guy who wrote the cap surgery instrux that many of you have found so useful — has posted a bunch of Phillies clubhouse photos on his blog. Among the revelations: Ryan Howard has an Astros jersey hanging in his locker. Further details here and here. … “Last season, Pelle Prestberg, a player for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Elite hockey league, wore No. 100, instead of his usual No. 10,” writes R. J. Pratt. “Based on my VERY rudimentary Swedish knowledge and use of online translators, it appears that he wore it during 2005-06 to ‘celebrate’ the 100th anniversary of Lofsberg Lila, one of Frolunda’s sponsors (as I’m sure you’re aware, European hockey teams have long been victims of extreme logo creep, to the point where the team logos are often secondary). But that’s not the worst. Check out this photo, which shows the team wearing shiny metallic gold helmets. Perhaps the scariest hockey outfit ever worn.” … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: All the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees are listed by uniform number here. … The Florida Marlins could become the Miami Marlins, according to this report. … The party line is the college football helmt merit decals originated with Ohio State in 1968. But according to this interview (kindly forwarded by Brian Hansen), Nebraska was doing it as early as 1956. To find the relevant portion of the interview, search on the word “Stauber” and read that paragraph. … Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien wore a Senators jersey (the “M” is presumably for mayor) during a pep rally yesterday (as spotted by Bryan Redemske). … Quasi-logo-related item from Kim Kolb, who writes, “Thought you’d might want to check this out. Who are they? They’re the supporters’ group for the Philadelphia MLS team. Never mind that Philadelphia does not (yet) have an MLS team. They’ve organized, come up with a pretty good name and logo, and even gotten some press. They’ve even got a road trip planned to head up to Giants Stadium to boo the New York Red Bulls, because what Philadelphia sports entity can exist without a little hate for NY? Anyway, they picked the yellow and blue (hoping that a soccer team would follow suit) to match the Philadelphia flag.” … Holy crap.
Holiday Schedule: We’ll have open threads for at least two of the next three days. I might have a new entry on Sunday or Monday — or I might not. Either way, the Uni Watch membership program should be ready to launch when we reconvene next week. Have a great Decoration Day weekend, and watch out for American flag patches falling off of MLB caps.

Have the Mets given up on wearing those dreadful batting practice caps? I noticed that during last night’s pregame, the players and coaches were wearing the traditional (read–blue) 5950 caps with their practice jerseys. Since they never wear blue hats on the road, it seems they have brought them along in place of the batting practice caps.

Some disheartening news from the alma-matter:
“Look for the Gophers football team, under new coach Tim Brewster, to switch from gold to maroon pants for road games this year, and to wear gold pants with gold jerseys for the Ohio State game Sept. 29 at the Metrodome. Minnesota plans to wear maroon pants and maroon jerseys for the Wisconsin game Nov. 17 at the Dome.
The Gophers are switching from black shoes to white shoes next season.”
The switch to white shoes I believe was reported here weeks ago, was it not? The gold-on-gold and maroon-on-maroon hurts bad though. Link here (toward the bottom of the article).

Well, geez, I knew those were guardian angel pins. I thought the mystery was WHY they wore them, not what they were. I have the one with the angel holding a bat (Manny’s style?). I dont’ wear it because the bat makes it top-heavy and it always falls over. You can get them with different sports equipment, along with plain angels, your birthstone, etc. I also have a weight loss one, standing on a little scale.

Cross-sport equipment? How about the many soccer shin guards (at least that what they started as) that baseball players wear when batting?
#13 by Joe Drennan on 05.25.07 9:19 am |
Hasek wears a helmet made by Gary Warick. The mask is a newer verson of an old Cooper helmet like the one Mark Messier wore, but Hasek wore a simple players cage on it that you’ll find on many youth players.
I myself wore the same kind of helmet for a year in college until my parents, coaches and doctor made me go back to the “traditional” mask after a concussion.
Hockey goalies do however tend to wear golf or batting gloves on their glove hand. It’s supposed to minimize the sting of catching a puck. I’ve tried it, but I don’t think it works. You can see a good example here on Belfour’s left hand.

Once of my roommates in college was on the downhill ski team and apparently they would wear soccer shin guards on their forearms for protection when hitting the poles or gates or whatever they are called.

Brady Anderson of the Orioles famously wore a Roller Blade elbow pad at bat. He used to blade to Camden Yards from his home. You can see pics here and here. I couldn’t find one with “roller blade” visible.
#17 by Jason on 05.25.07 9:30 am |
I would imagine wearing a goalie mask while at bat (a la Dave Parker) would greatly reduce your visibility and make it very difficult to hit the ball. Too bad he didn’t get a hit, that would have been highly impresive.

I just read on the Milwaukee Brewers web site that they are going to be hosting a bowling tournament there Oct. 28th. I have two things to say about this:
1) It says they had this bowling tournament at Miller Park in 2004. Has anyone heard of a bowling tournament being held at a baseball venue ever aside from this? For that matter have there been any other sports taking place in different sports venues in general?
2) I know I am counting my chickens before they hatch.. but what if the Crew make a run in the playoffs and make it to the World Series? I don’t how the scheduling would work… but what if the Brewers have a home game that night? It says that they venue would be moved to another local bowling alley, but that wouldn’t be nearly as fun a Miller Park.

I know the University of Kentucky and Michigan State played a basketball game at Ford Field a few years ago. They did it strictly to break the record for attendance to a college basketball game, which they did.
I’m pretty sure two NHL teams played an outdoor game a few years ago too. The details escape me though. I’m sure someone on here would know more about it.

Happens all the time. Wrigley Field was the long time home of the Bears. Infact. Wrigley Field has hosted more NFL games than any other venue. Hockey arenas are routinley used for basketball as well. Football stadiums are used for soccer.
Basketball courts are used for volleyball. The list is endless.
The small arena I coach at held the US Horse Shoe National Championships. That just shows it doesn’t have to be a major arena to host a cross over.

Bowling to me is interesting… It looked really strange when they did it at Miller Park. I think they just threw a couple of lanes on the 1st base line. I believe the Racing Sausages also made an appearance if I’m not mistaken.
Also remember that the University of Wisconsin played Ohio State in hockey at Lambeau 2 years ago, and the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four will be at Ford Field in Detroit as well.

Why are you comparing a European tradition to that which occurs in the NHL? The leading scorer in all Euro leagues wear a different helmet, and some even wear a different jersey, much like the Tour de France.
I doubt very much that they are not respecting the game. If anything, they are celebrating the achievement of a player, not unlike the Art Ross Trophy or “Rocket” Richard Trophy.

The Frolunda HC/Farjestads BK mixup is unforgivable on my part. I looked at the post this morning and saw the FBK logo and thought - uh-oh, you really screwed up here. My only defense was checking out past seasons to see what Prestberg wore for a number and he had played for Frolunda earlier.
As for the helmets, I knew about the scoring thing (I remember a picture of Rick Nash sporting a snazzy gold helmet in the Swiss league during the lockout) but I was curious as to the reason that they’re all wearing the helmets. I’m guessing the picture is from when Farjestads won the Elitserien playoffs in 2006 - maybe if you win, the league gives everyone gold helmets. Farjestads usually wears purple.

i KNOW that i dont mind the way juan pierre looks cuz his pants are tailored to be baggy, to mimic the look of jackie and gehrig, et al.
i KNOW that i like when some teams wear same color pants and shirts in football, alternate solid color baseball jerseys, the previously stated “pajama pant”, and that i dont mind the color purple.
i KNOW that i “GET IT” because i pay attention to this kind of stuff in all sports, and not because of i am forced to follow some popular opinions here.

I’m quite certain the golden hats in Swedish hockey are only used to celebrate a championship and only worn after the final game and never during games. Its similar to the tradition of US teams donning celebratory T-shirts and caps after winning the World Series, Super Bowl etc. The golden hats are ugly none the less.

Viewing the names and numbers of the Pro Football Hall of Fame makes me really wish the “No Fun League” would quit the practice of assigning numbers to positions.
Now, I’m not suggesting a complete overhaul… Otto Graham changed from #60 to #14 when the Browns left the All-America Football Conference for the NFL… and tackle “Bruiser” Kinard would obviously need to wear a number other than his #25; but would it really hurt anything for Reggie Bush to wear #5 as a running back? The thing about Graham that always found intriguing, was that in the old days jerseys were recycled and in the seasons directly following his change from #60 to #14 you can clearly see the outline of the old number on the jersey. In fact, I think the HOF has such a jersey on display.
This day and age, an NFL player probably uses several jerseys a year.

I’m just guessing here, but i dont think those Japanese jerseys are real teams. I have been in two different second-hand shops in two different states that had a rack that looked exactly the same, with about 50 Japanese baseball jerseys. I even owned a couple of the Jerseys at one point. They were definitely replicas at best.
I remember trying to find information about the “teams” whose jerseys i had and never came up with anything. I suppose they could be high school replicas or what we would call semi-pro or even amateur.

I think this would be in a slightly different category though because Boardwalk Hall was their only venue. It wasn’t as if they played their once just as a promotional thing.
As an ECHL fan, I thought AC would have been a great market for the ECHL. You could have the fans from teams like Johnstown, Wheeling, Toledo, Dayton, etc plan road trips and hit the casinos while they are there. That just wasn’t enough from an attendance standpoint though. Even in the year they won the title it just wasn’t enough. I guess it would be hard to keep a sports franchise afloat based solely on tourism and not a home market.

How about you go %*^& yourself? You want to tell a city/region that supports baseball like Colorado has (4.5 million fans the first year, over 3 million in each of the first 9, despite consistently lousy teams) that they shouldn’t have a team? I’m sorry, we don’t WANT to drive 600 miles to Kansas City or 900 miles to Phoenix to see a game. Look, I don’t like a steady diet of 12-9 games any more than you do, but the humidor has really helped. Park effects used to regularly top 120 and even 130 here, but since 2003 they’ve been 112, 120, 113, 107, and 107. That’s right, since the beginning of last season only 7% more scoring than a neutral park!

I’m a little bit different. I prefer the city names, but I would still choose a regional name over a state name. I really dislike it when they take the name of a city that they are either no longer in or were never in. (i.e. LA Angels of Anaheim, NY Jets/Giants, Dallas Cowboys, the list goes on…). Honor where you are…not where you have been or wish you were.

The Rockies play “real baseball” but are aided by something that can not be controlled. Maybe they should have made the fence further back. But it’s no worse than the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park? Routine fly balls are going into the stands. That park is ridiculous.

Here’s where I disagree. I know they’re in NJ, but it’s practically NYC and both football teams are born of NYC. Also, the Cowboys are JUST outside Dallas. Not exactly far away. (Anaheim’s a different story since it’s over 20 miles from LA and a population base that is its own area now.)

Well the LA Angels of Anaheim is a class by itself–it’s no wonder they just wear “Angels” on their road uniforms. As far as NY Jets/Giants and some of the others, I don’t have to big a problem with it because even though the venues may be outside city limits, they are still within the sphere of influence of the namesake city.
How funny would it be though to watch the New Jersey Giants play the Maryland Redskins…or the East Rutherford Jets play the Irving Cowboys!

If you are looking for non main stream sports, the S.F. Giants hosted a ski jumping exhibition at AT&T park either this last winter or the winter before. I don’t have any pictures of it, but I do know I saw a few somewhere online at one point. Maybe someone else has some photos.

The golfer that wears NFL Equipment polos is Ben Curtis. He usually wears the polo shirt of the team from whatever state the tournament is in. I know I’ve seen him in Browns, Redskins, Steelers, and Vikings gear.

Being from W. MA, I appreciate the Patriot’s using New England rather than a more specific name. People who do not live in MA tend to think the entire state consists only of Boston and that general area… So for example even though there are Red Sox fans throughout New England (although CT likes to pretend its an extension of NYC sometimes), all Red Sox fans are characterized as being typical obnoxious R-droppping Bostonians, which doesn’t even come close to covering the entire fan base. Of course I am in NO WAY suggesting that the Red Sox change their name, that would be blasphemy. Just trying to explain how a regional name can make more sense.

Many of the Early 90’s Blue Jays used to wear the Rollerblade wrist guards to protect their wrists when sliding head first. Roberto Alomar in particular.

I can remember going to the PA Farm Show when I was a little one and remember seeing a figure skater on a temporary ice surface. I wonder if anyone knows if they ever did an exhibition hockey game there.
I doubt that it would happen, as you have a perfectly good arena just up the road in Hershey.
I will admit, though, that there were ice shows at the Carrier Dome in the mid-to-late 90’s, even though there was a good arena in downtown Syracuse.

Don’t get me wrong I live on Long Island and I’m a die hard Jets fan, but they don’t reside in New York. They reside in New Jersey. Want to use a regional name, ok…they could call themselves the Metro Jets (ok, that’s horrible, but you get the idea.).
Dallas could use a state name or call themselves the Arlington Cowboys when they move. What about the A’s when they move to Freemont? Do they keep the Oakland in their name?
I know that it would get messy to change everyones names to a proper locale but it does bug me when I see a name that doesn’t fit. It also makes me appreciate the Patriots being “New England” instead of “Boston”.
Just my $0.02

And, of course, before Curtis, the late, great Payne Stewart had NFL-geared shirts and plus-fours.

The first publicized outdoor hockey that I remember that may have started the trend was “the cold war.”
Michigan vs. Michigan State at Spartan Stadium, #1 vs. #4 in the country, great game and 78,000+ (I think) were there in attendance. Here’s a video recap!

‘Golden State’ Warriors is just plain goofy, especially now that there are 4 teams in CA. They used to be the SF Warriors before moving over to Oakland around the same time the A’s moved from KC. I wouldn’t have minded the ‘Oakland’ Warriors, ‘San Francisco Bay’ Warriors, or even ‘Bay Area’ Warriors.
NOT, however, the ‘San Francisco Warriors of Oakland formerly of Philadelphia’.
I think its probably too late to change it.

those aren’t soccer shinguards. Soccer shinguards A) dont have straps B) arent that type of molded plastic and C) are wayyyy bigger than most shinguards worn by professionals. Shinguards tend to diminish in size at higher levels of soccer. Throughout HS i wore a pair designed for 5-9 years olds…

Just a note on RAGSTOCK. They actually have stores all over the midwest, not just MPLS. Growing up in Madison, WI we used to shop there all the time. Every location I’ve been to has the Japanese jerseys as well as various other sports. Check out www.ragstock.com for locations.
