Hero Worship

New ESPN column today — here’s the link.

Meanwhile: I love ripple effects. Case in point: Two or three weeks ago I got an e-mail from Ronnie Poore, telling me that he’d spotted something interesting in a photo that had run in a recent issue of Sports Illustrated. He no longer had his copy of the magazine, and neither did I, but he offered to ask around his office to see if anyone else had one. Eventually he wrote back to say he’d come up with a copy — did I want it? Sure, I said. So he mailed it to me, along with a letter explaining what had caught his eye in the photo he’d previously mentioned. I ended up linking to the photo — a shot of the 1965 NFL draft — in this past Monday’s Ticker, where I noted, as Poore had in his letter to me, the stirrups on the little figurines.

And that could have been the end of it — a typically wonderful example of a Uni Watch reader going the extra mile to bring a small detail to the attention of the larger readership. Nice.

But then the ripple effect kicked in. The day after I ran that Ticker item, I got a truly magnificent response from Vinnie Dinolfo, as follows:

The figurine was a bendable toy named Johnny Hero, which came out shortly after GI Joe. All 14 NFL teams were available as a Johnny Hero doll, which came complete with a miniature football uniform, plastic helmet, plastic shoes, and plastic football. I received the Cleveland Browns Johnny Hero for Christmas around 1966. The doll had socks, shoes, pants, a jersey, and shoulder pads to go along with the helmet and football. All the parts were removable. The white Browns pants were shiny satin and the jersey and socks were a T-shirt-like material. My Mom ironed the front and back numerals onto the brown football jersey (the Browns always wore white jerseys at the time, so that caused me slight disappointment). I chose No. 86, for Gary Collins. The brown sock was supposed to be worn under the smaller white sock, as my father pointed out. Apparently, whoever dressed the dolls shown in the 1965 draft photo put the socks on in the wrong order.

The best part of the uniform was that all of the stripes on the jersey, pants, socks, and helmet were perfect (which can’t be said about the current Browns socks). Johnny Hero was slightly larger than GI Joe and would lead the Browns to victory over GI Joe (wearing those helmets from the bubble gum machine) in my imaginary NFL title games. Unfortunately, the Johnny Hero doll was made of foam rubber and wire. The foam rubber eventually dried up and disintegrated, so the wires became exposed. I eventually lost all the uniform pieces that outlasted my doll. And sadly, the Browns have yet to win the NFL title since my Johnny Hero-worshipping days.

Wow. I’d never heard of Johnny Hero dolls before, so I went to eBay and typed “Johnny Hero” into the search engine. And that’s when the ripple became a tidal wave. Johnny Hero’s default outfit was a boring track suit, but you could customize him to be a member of just about any NFL or AFL team, and many of the little uniform sets available for sale were completely amazing. A quick search turned up kits for the Giants, Steelers, Vikings, Niners, Chargers, Lions, Colts, Cowboys, Packers (that sound you just heard was my pulse thumping a bit faster), Jets, Rams, Redskins, Pats, Eagles, Bears, Bills, Raiders, Oilers, and, yes, the Browns (with the never-used logo helmet!). Yeah, they got a few of the details wrong, but whatever — I think the uni sets still look wicked cool. You can get a closer look at the level of craftsmanship by checking out the close-up photos here and here.

You say you’re more of a baseball fan? No problem — you could also dress up Johnny Hero as a member of the Pirates, Phillies, Red Sox (looks like they cut corners by using those same stirrups for the Cardinals), Yankees, Indians, Senators, Angels (note the franchise’s old “LA” helmet logo), Orioles, Mets, Tigers, Twins, Giants, Dodgers, or Cubs.

I don’t know why, but many things are really appealing when rendered in miniature, and that definitely applies to these little uniform sets. Does anyone out there collect these?

(Update from this morning’s comments: Lots of great Johnny Hero info, including an FAQ section, care instrux for the uniform sets, “anatomical” details, lots of pics of the dolls dressed up in the uniforms, and a whole lot more, here. Wish I’d found this before writing today’s entry.)

Speaking of Heroes…: A tip of the Uni Watch cap to New York Times writer David Picker, who’s just written one of the most complete and informative uni-related articles I’ve ever seen. It’s about those five-toed Japanese socks, which several of the Red Sox are wearing (and not just the team’s two Japanese pitchers). The article covers just about every conceivable base and provides a wealth of invaluable info — essential reading. Check it out here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: The Yankees held a pregame memorial ceremony for Virginia Tech last night, plus they put the VT logo on the field, on their caps, and, although it’s hard to make out, on Jorge Posada’s shoulder pad (with thanks to Vincent Barone for that screen grab). … According to this item about the NFL’s new anti-concussion measures, “The NFL rule requiring every player to wear a chin strap that is completely and properly buckled to the helmet will be strictly enforced.” Does that mean that the many players favoring this style will have to buckle up? Or does “completely and properly buckled” simpy mean at least one connection on each side? Stay tuned. … While researching something else, I came across this photo of Alex Delvecchio. Note that his captain’s C is outlined, rather than solid. (It’s also on the “wrong” side, but that was pretty typical for him — well, usually). … Reprinted from last night’s comments: Still more great photos from the Ernie Davis biopic shoot here.

Maybe its just because I hate the Yankees so much, but aren’t they a little behind on the Virginia Tech Tribute. I am thrilled that they would donate such a large amount of money. It just seemed weird to me when I was watching the game last night and saw the VT logo on Pettite’s hat.

Ryan Howard was rocking the high socks look last night for his rehab assignment with the Lakewood Blue Claws

Ryan Howard with Lakewood

However, this was due to an organization wide requirement for minor leaguers, so I don’t think he’ll be wearing them when he returns to the Phillies on Friday

If there was a Colt .45’s or Astros uni set for Johnny Hero, I think I might have to have it.

Idon’t know how to set up the link correctly (without just putting forth the full link types out) - HELP….

Long time lurker, first time poster. That was a good shot of Ryan in his uniform. There were some other good bits on philly.com:

“The BlueClaws made some arrangements of their own. Howard normally wears a size-54 jersey. The largest Lakewood had was a size-52. So the No. 45 was removed and Howard’s No. 6 was affixed to four of the shirts. Two were worn yesterday and will be auctioned off for charity. Two more will be worn today. One of those will also go to charity and Howard will keep the other as a souvenir.

They also made sure to put “R Howard” on the back of his uniform, just so there would be no confusion between him and infielder Kevin Howard.

“I don’t think that’s a problem,” K Howard said with a laugh. “We’re a little different size.”

With the Phillies, Howard wears his uniform pants to the bottom of his spikes. With Lakewood, he adhered to the organizationwide rule and wore his pants high.”

That’s just a weird spot for the VT logo on the Yankee cap. Why behind the left ear?

i just got done listening to my favorite morning show (dunham and miller on 1310 THE TICKET) discuss these socks
as always, hilarity ensued

Here is a badly done web page with good pictures of the baseball unis being worn. Apparently there is an Astros set…no picture though. 0_0

Oh, did anyone else notice the VT pulling away from some of the Yankee caps last night?

I think the Captain’s C on Delvecchio works on his right shoulder. It balaces out with the flying wheel logo which goes up and to his left. The C balances the look a bit.

When the C is on his left, it visually bunches everything on his left shoulder.

I find the large 10 on his gloves in this picture interesting, though.

Looking at the Johnny Hero uniform of the Red Sox, I was interested to see that the batting helmut had “SOX” down the front rather than the “B”. I have never seen this before.

Did such a helmut ever really exist? If so, I would love to see some photos of it!

In those days it was very common for players to have their number fairly large on their gloves for the same reason people pointed out yesterday that it makes sense for Little Leaguers to have their numbers on their hat.

Today with so many different brands of hockey gloves and color combination possibilities it’s easy to find your gloves in a pile, that and the companies sew the players name, number, or nickname into the cuff of the glove. Some may remember Sid the Kid has Daryle on his gloves as it’s his nickname.

The Yankees just made a $1M donation….who cares when they did it… how much did your favorite team donate to VT?

So I’m watching the Mets/Braves game last night and I see Oscar Villarreal pitching to Jarrod Saltalamacchia and wondered what the longest combination of names for a battery was.
In this case, with given and surnames we get 35 letters; and with just surnames we get 23 letters. Can you think of any longer combos?

Unrelated to today’s topic, but what a fun “Uni Series” between the Red Sox and Yanks these past three days. What a pleasure to not have to worry about whether or not one or both teams are going to trot out in some hideously colored softball jerseys (like the Mets in black). But for the names on the Sox road jerseys, it could have been 1950. It makes the game a pleasure to watch.

I’m pretty sure William Van Landingham pitched to Todd Hollandsworth at some point. That would be 37 total and 26 in the surnames alone.

The Mets announcers were discussing that as well. Mr. Met will probably chime in shortly and remember who they said may be the longest battery name in history. It’s already slipped my mind.

Sorry, I misunderstood the premise you were going for; battery-mates with long names.

I too noticed the “SOX” on the Boston helmet, and a quick check of Dressed to the Nines did not show this helmet in use… strange

Didn’t even hear them say it…I was flipping channels because my wife HAD to watch American Idol live. She told me that I could record the game if I wanted to watch it that badly. Sometimes she gets it and sometimes she doesn’t.

My bad. I apologized in post #19. Looks like the longest-named catcher Van Landingham ever pitched to was Kirt Manwaring.

I have to defend Justin, I thought the same thing. It’s really not his or my fault. With today’s radio and television media only focusing mainly on what is happening now, or what the new bloodbath of the week is, stories like the VT shootings may seem further away in time than they are. If you are not directly connected to those terrible events, then they may be quickly put aside in your daily routine and thoughts. Last week you may be mainly concerned with the shootings, but this week you may be mainly concerned with the droughts in Australia because that is what the radio and television media is mainly pushing this week. It’s a great thing what the Yanks did, it just seems odd because they didn’t do it when every other team paid their respects and it’s not in the headlines anymore.

As Vinnie Dinolfo (above) commented on Johnny Hero: “The brown sock was supposed to be worn under the smaller white sock, as my father pointed out.”
When we played sports in the ’70s, the stirrup was on the outside only in baseball. In basketball and football, the stirrup was sandwiched between two pairs of sanitaries. This gave the look of a white sock with 3-4″ of color or stripes on top.

I’m pretty sure that “SOX” helmet for the Boston set is actually a White Sox helmet. I know Chicago wore a similar design at one point- either it’s a mistake or an intentional way to save money (like the stirrups).

Saw this in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review today. I have never seen the steelers use these helmets before, must be a first-look at their new alt uniforms?

That’s odd that they would be wearing them now. I mean, they’re only going to be used for 1-2 games. It’s not like it’s their helmet and jersey for every game……..

The SOX helmet is a 1951-1963 White Sox helmet. The Go-Go White Sox of that era were not just an great team, but their uniforms where also best the Sox have ever worn.

Wow, i should have kept reading. It’s explained here.

I thought that was a White Sox helmet. I went lookng for an example and couldn’t find, but I did come across this cool White Sox logo that I’ve never seen before.

I’ll be the first one to admit that I know almost nothing about soccer, but I just saw this interesting pic of a shirt under the player’s soccer jersey from yesterday’s “super bowl of soccer” as my friend put it.

The Cowboys have done this during the Parcells era. Their throwback helmets (white with a solid blue star) are also their practice helmets. Don’t know if that’s coach’s preference or if it’s a marketing thing to put them out there more often than just 1-2 games.

Anybody know?

Hey Paul, I have one of those pins that Nomar is wearing in the picture. It was given to me after I completed dancing in Penn State Dance Marathon, I think they give them out every year. While I know it is the same pin, I can’t say whether or not there is any connection with the Dance Marathon and Nomar (I would guess not).

Saw some roller derby on HDNet (”Geek to Freak with Dennis Rodman”) last night. Some of the girls were wearing FOUR-digit uniform numbers, including the new player, “Dee Calculator”, wearing 9001.

The first link isn’t working, but it’s the 3rd pic on the second link. The shirt says “I BELONG TO JESUS”.

I think it’s more the case that now they have a couple of guys to handle the equipment, as opposed to guys lugging their own stuff around. But I would have thought that more telling indications would be on the older brown leather gloves, too.

While looking for other large numbered gloves, I saw this and this with Pierre Pilote of the Black Hawks with a C left and right.

Wow, a Yankees hat with the VT logo! As an Orioles fan and WVU alum, I can’t begin to describe how that makes me feel. (shudders). Two arch-rivals from two different sports genres on the same cap!

Note: I mean absolutely no disrespect to the victims or anyone involved with the horrible tragedy that occured on the Virginia Tech campus–my thoughts and prayers go out to anyone and everyone affected. Having said that, it certainly doesn’t mean I feel any differently about the VT athletic teams. (It’s too bad that VT is too scared to play the Mountaineers any more–I miss the old rivalry).

We all know ballplayers are a superstitious lot; maybe he’s rocking a 90’s hairdo because he feels if he doesn’t, they won’t win another title.

Here here. As a WVU alum I could not agree more. Too bad we don’t play Penn State anymore either….

I wish the Mountaineers would stop messing with the uniform though. I can think of at least six of seven versions of the football uni over the last, well, 15 years….that seems like a lot to me.

My guess would be a little bit of both (although a seasoned coach like Parcells may have more influence on things like this than say a rookie coach like Tomlin). Wearing them during practice increases the visibility pre-season, which, in the mind of marketing, may help to sell the alternate uni items to fans.

If you read my post again, you sill see that I said that I was thrilled that they did donate $1M. That was not the point. The point is that when I tuned in and saw the logo on Petitte’s hat I just thought it was kind of weird timing. I fully applaud them for making the donation. But it almost seems to me that the Yankees don’t want to do something when everyone else is, they want to stand out.

I just did — should be added to the text in a few mins.

I teach at a high school, and each year before Prom season we stage a mock accident so that the seniors see what can happen if they drink and drive. Anyway, one of my students came into class with one of the guardian angel pins many of you have been talking about. My guess is that this is Nomar’s way of honoring someone, much like David Ortiz points to the sky to honor his mother when he hits a home run.

I started getting interested in the NFL when the Falcons and Braves came along in the mid-60’s. Never saw the doll, so I also had to make do with GI Joe in a bubble-gum helmet (or his astronaut helmet). Would’ve loved those uniforms sets!

eeek… not ‘dolls’. “Action Figures” ;)

eeek… not ‘dolls’. “Action Figures” ;)

Exactly. I have quite the collection of McFarlane figures and my wife always calls them dolls, but I insits that they’re action figures.

Intersting note, the Torii Hunter McFarlane figure has an underbill inscription with his 48 on it. I’d take a picture, but I have it at my desk at work.

You can add Kevin Durant to the list of why athletes wear a certain number by looking here

Check out this jersey. As far as I can tell the uni tagging is done on the inside of this jersey as opposed to the outside as is the norm. I guess it is one way to prevent guys like Rent-a-rocket Clemens from simply romving the tagging altogether. First time I have ever seen anything like that.

I found the Everblades 10th anniversary jerseys, and it angers me.

First, a patch would suffice. Anniversary jerseys are the epitome of stupid in hockey. They can only be worn for one season ever. Just slap a patch on the sleeve or chest, and be done with it.

Second, they are clearly using the Nike Swift template which, in my opinion, sucks. The vertical stripes look horrid, considering that the side panels have what appears to be a scale image on them.

Third, why are they copying the Barney Rubble Hairpieces in putting the numbers on the front of the jerseys? What purpose does it serve?

Honestly, I am thoroughly disappointed with these jerseys.

Does anyone remember a similar nameless action figure from the early 1980’s? The figure would mount on a stand like Johnny Hero but only the stick-on numbers were .

If you look at the other jerseys the guy has on ebay, it seems that all the Pittsburg jersey are tagged like that. Even the Cool-base jersey is tagged on the inside.

That’s not really a uniform logo, more of a “corporate” logo. Most teams have them in addition to their “logo(s)” on their uniforms.

Look here:

Most of these logos are never on a uniform.

It’s a beautiful park, but if you ever do get there what will really strike you is how CLEAN the concourses are. If I had dropped my Dodger Dog, I wouldn’t have thought twice about picking it up and still eating it (5-second rule applies) . . .

I don’t get why teams continue to go the Camden Yards route with new ballparks. Symmetry is OK and there is no need to be quirky just for the hell of it (see: Houston). Dodger Stadium is gorgeous; hard to believe its about 45 years old.

Sorry if this gets mentioned, I haven’t read all the comments, but being a Giants fan, the longest combo I can think of is Van Landingham to Manwaring, which comes up short at 33 total or 22 last name only . . . I saw this combo on several occasions at Candlestick.

Does anyone remember a similar nameless action figure from the early 1980’s? The figure would mount on a stand like Johnny Hero but only the stick-on numbers were .

No, but there is this. Comes in every MLB team I believe.

Sorry if this gets mentioned, I haven’t read all the comments, but being a Giants fan, the longest combo I can think of is Van Landingham to Manwaring, which comes up short at 33 total or 22 last name only . . . I saw this combo on several occasions at Candlestick.

Yup. Post #23. I love that Van Landingham’s teammates nicknamed him ‘Shemp’ because of his hair. After a while, my buddy Ray started calling him ‘Van Launching Pad’.

The Yankees just made a $1M donation….who cares when they did it… how much did your favorite team donate to VT?

Do you really think that the President of Virginia Tech could have made it to NY much sooner than he did? With all the things that he had to do since the tragedy that happened at his school, not to mention the damage control that he had to take care of, im sure being at Yankee Stadium wasn’t first on his list. The Yankees worked it around his schedule, and let’s face it, they also gave 1 Million dollars, and will bring a lot of positive press, not to mention a lot of money to Virginia Tech when they play a game on or around the VT Campus. For once, can people stop looking at all the negatives and just focus on the positives?

Anyone notice the “PISTONS” written on Tayshaun’s Prince’s socks? YOu can check out the picture in last week’s Sports Illustrated (pg 45)

Great column today. As someone who has never been to Dodger Stadium, what I liked best was this panoramic shot of the ballpark. Gorgeous.

I don’t get why teams continue to go the Camden Yards route with new ballparks. Symmetry is OK and there is no need to be quirky just for the hell of it (see: Houston). Dodger Stadium is gorgeous; hard to believe its about 45 years old.

Camden Yards was and is a great place to watch a game, but I have never liked how so many teams “copied” the design. I was really glad to find out that DC’s new ballpark, slated to open next year, went with a different approach. The designs not only look fantastic (IMO), but have look and feel completely different from that of The Yard.

We know the Washington Capitals will debut their new uniforms on draft day, but what about the other teams? Has this been discussed regarding other teams?

The NHL draft will be televised and in the past when teams make their player selections, the player heads up to the stage and puts on his jersey over his shirt and tie, puts on the cap and smiles for photo-ops with the front office staff.

Will the draft be the first sightings of the newly designed jerseys everyone’s been talking about?

I’m just excited to see Vancouver’s new uni’s. Their current ones are putrid..but not the hockey stick.

Nope. As it stands, Washington is the only team slated to debut their new threads on the 22nd. Vancouver is later - the guy who runs the team shop out of GM Place was told he had to order the jerseys sight unseen.

From what I understand, there will be further unveilings in August and September. No other teams, from all I have read, have even set a date.

I was at the yard (free club level seats!) last night and was thinking about how great it still looks after 15 years…no special patch for that, huh Pete? Although they are building a hotel just beyond center field that may block some of the view of the Bromo Seltzer tower…not a fan of that.

The DC stadium renderings do look sweet!

It took me 10 mins to find the swoosh!

They had to ruin it by putting the cheerleaders in Oregon Football unis in one of the pics, did’nt they?

That’s an expensive sandwich in the picture. $299? I hope there’s Kobe beef and caviar in it!

Thanks for the follow-up looks like the players that get drafted will have to put on last season’s version.

Hoping for the Canucks stay with the throwback look. But I have a feeling it may be an updated version.

Paul- A while back I seem to remember chatter about a hockey goalie who used a blocker on both hands. Am I crazy? Do you or anybody have a pic you can link to? Thanks

Why did the Yankees have to wait until the President of Virginia Tech could come to a game to honor the school. It just seemed like odd timing.

Yes, I know! I can’t believe they are buiding that Hotel–I’ve been pissed ever since they broke ground. The skyline view of the city from the yard is one of it’s great aesthic elements. I fear that in the future the only view will be of the new hotel.
