If you think I was a Scrooge for giving the thumbs-down to MLB’s pink Mother’s Day wristbands, that’s nothing compared to what umpire Bill Welke did in Houston on Wednesday night.
To explain: Astros pitcher Chris Sampson’s wife gave birth to the couple’s first child on Tuesday. When Sampson took the mound for Wednesday night’s game, he was still wearing his hospital wristband/bracelet thingie — which, by coincidence, appears to have been pink, as you can see on his left arm here. But before he could throw his first pitch, Welke — who was umpiring the plate — walked out to the mound and then gestured toward the Houston dugout. Out trotted a trainer, who huddled with Sampson and Welke and then cut off the offending bit of wristwear.
Sampson didn’t appear too upset about all this, and we all know pitchers aren’t supposed to wear anything distracting, but come on — couldn’t they at least have let him throw a pitch or two in his baby’s honor before making him snip off the wristband? Jeez.
Little-known fact that Elias won’t be telling you: The last MLB player to have something scissored off of his person while standing on the field of play was Scott Williamson, who was ordered to remove his Nike-pox sleeves last May 12th.
Membership Update: In case you missed yesterday’s entry, scroll down to it to see the big news about the official Uni Watch membership program, which should be ready to roll in another week or so. Big, big thanks to the many of you who’ve already expressed your enthusiasm and support for this idea. One change I’ve decided to make after getting lots of feedback yesterday: The membership “uni numbers” will be non-exclusive, so you can have whatever number you want on the back of your membership card, even if someone else already has that number (which should be good news to the roughly eight gazillion of you who tried to call dibs on No. 21 — why is that number so popular?).
More details to come soon.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Fantastic photo gallery detailing the history of women’s basketball uniforms here (with thanks to Todd Krevanchi). … Excellent article about the Jaguars’ equipment crew, plus a video link at the top of the page, here (with thanks to David Chisholm). … WVU’s new football jersey is visible in these shots from the Playboy Pre-Season All American photo shoot. That’s Steve Slaton is wearing the gold No. 10. (Good find by Jonathan Eskridge.) … Boise State’s new football jerseys will be unveiled late this afternoon. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Lots of chatter about the Orioles wearing “Baltimore” on their road jerseys next season. … Also from yesterday’s comments: All ACC football teams will wear a black armband this season, in remembrance of those who died in the Virginia Tech shootings. … Remember our recent discussion of FieldTurf baseball diamonds? Glenn Chamberlain sent along this shot of the Washington State field — even the home plate “dirt” area is FieldTurf. … “I wanted to send along some more info about Lamar Hunt tributes that you mentioned on Tuesday,” writes Scott Whaley. “The Hunt family also owns the Columbus Crew in Columbus, Ohio, and Lamar paid for the construction of Crew Stadium, the first soccer-specific stadium in the United States, out of his own pocket (not a dime of taxpayer money) in 1999. The Crew are also doing a lot of tribute items for Lamar this season, including an ‘LH’ chest patch logo. This same logo is being used in all sales and marketing materials for this season, and also appears on a flag flying in the stadium.” … Interesting side decal placement on the batting helmets used by Hunters Lane High in Tennessee (good catch by Lee Wilds). … “Schutt has created a couple of different DNA facemask designs that are apparently tied in with their agreement with the AFL,” writes Matt Olson. “The letters ‘AFL’ are even included in the mask names, the AFL-EGJOP and AFL-EGOP. This is the first time in my experience that masks have been marketed to a specific league. I’m assuming they’ll also be available to players outside of the AFL, but we’ll know for sure in the coming months.” … On Wednesday I mentioned how the scoreboard at Minute Maid Park inexplicably lists players with single-digit numbers as “09″ and “07,” but I didn’t have a photo. Happily, Jason Mintz just provided one. … Marcus Ramsey reports that the Rangers’ broadcast team was none too thrilled with last night’s green-vs.-blue display — and neither was Ramsey himself: “It was bad enough that the Rangers can’t beat the Rays,” he writes, “but they’re playing at a spring training park and this made it look like a spring training game.” … Speaking of the Rays, auto racing legend Richard Petty threw out the first ball the other night and donned a green jersey for the occasion. … Remember yesterday’s photo of the horse with the wrestling-esque mask? Here, apparently, is the actual mask on which it was modeled (good follow-up by Jeremy Brahm). … Latest MLBer whose pant leg cuffs appear to be elastic-free: J.D. Drew (as spotted by Adam Bachelder).

The Schutt AFL masks were available last fall as well, and, similar to the league itself, drew very little interest.
I will say I do like the style of the masks, which are only slightly different than the original models EGJOP and EGOP. If they are marketed correctly (read: drop the AFL connection and put one on an NFL player) these will be very popular masks.

That band Sampson was wearing is often used by hospitals in the maternity ward to prevent baby snatching. The only people allowed to take the baby or in the nrusery are the mother and father who are given the bands at birth. I was told not to take it off until discharge even though I was not officially admitted. Hope Sampson can still get into see his kid

From yesterday:
By the way, does it seem wrong to anyone else that a pro baseball team is named after a guy who DUMPED A FREAKING WORLD SERIES??? I blame Field of Dreams. I also blame FOD for casting an Italian guy from Newark NJ as Jackson, and letting him bat righthanded in the movie.
I have my 10th graders now reading W.P. Kinsella’s Shoeless Joe, the book upon which Field of Dreams is based. It’s a wonderful book. Highly recommended reading for all.
The book doesn’t mention whether the ghost of Shoeless Joe bats or throws righty or lefty. The Everbind school edition cover illustration shows him batting lefty.
There’s obviously a lot in the book that’s not in the movie, as there always is with such adaptations. The most obvious change is that James Earl Jones’ “Terence Mann” character is J.D. Salinger in the novel. There’s also a character named Eddie Scissons, “the oldest living Chicago Cub,” from whom Ray bought his farm, and Ray has a twin brother Richard, whose name appears in Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye (Ray’s name appears in an obscure 1940’s short story by Salinger called “A Young Girl in 1941 with No Waist At All”); Richard was the one who “said something awful” and walked out on their father as a teenager. The story in Shoeless Joe takes place about 10 years earlier than in Field of Dreams, in the late ’70s, and uses Moonlight Graham’s real-life biography (b. 1879, d. 1965, played one inning in the field for the Giants in 1905; the film moves each of these dates forward a number of years.)
I really like the Shoeless Joes’ logo and color scheme.

Not just a change in jersey…that happens a lot. I’m talking more like when the Pistons had that horrible mustard and teal jersey for a few years…then they wised up and went back to the old jerseys. What other teams have had such a bad change that they eventually went back to the old jersey, trying to pretend it never happened?

The next major change for the Cards came in 1964, when they introduced red hats at home. Through all of baseball’s uniform changes since then (pull-over jerseys, doubleknits, powder-blue road unis, and the addition/removal of front jersey numbers), the Cardinals have (rightly) retained the “Birds On The Bat.”

i’ve never understood why artificial surfaces were ALWAYS green, and, in this circumstance, why its brown. are the actually trying to trick us into thinking its the REAL THING?
boise st. had it right when they did the blue turf. yes, it looks funny but at the same time they are saying, “yes, our playing surface is artificial, but by no means are we going to try to “trick” you into thinking its really grass by making it green.”
now wazzu is taking it a step further. “we better make the batters box brown because we wouldnt want anyone to think our field is all synthetic.”
i guess people have always thought this way, “if we have fake grass, we better color it with fake chlorophyll.”

Granted their grey kit isn’t as red as the home one, there will be some overload at PNC tonight. (AZ doesn’t wear their red jerseys on the road do they? That’d be terrible).
Thank goodness for MLB Extra Innings because for visually pleasing unis, I’ll be watching the Brewers hosting the Twins on a Retro Friday. (It’d be cool if the Twins sported the powder blue, Kent Hrbek-era unis). Milwaukee is a team that gets it as far as an alternate uni.

I’m sure it was snipped off for a simple reason: Pitchers are not allowed to have any foreign substance or object on their person when they are pitching, other than rosin from the rosin bag. That includes of course emery boards, thumbtacks, vaseline, and any object on the hands or wrist. Personally, i’d like to see this rule enforced to get guys to take off their gold chains, too, but we can’t get everything we want.
I remember at a Montreal-Rockies game some years back, pitcher Zach Day was ejected after he was found to have super-glue on his hand. It was put there by his trainer in an attempt to close a cut that had opened up on his index finger. Ump Bill Miller ejected Day after seeing the offending substance, though he also didn’t believe that Day was trying to doctor the ball at all. The rules are clear, anything of that nature means you’re out of the game. A bummer for Sampson for sure, but more of a bummer if he’d thrown a pitch first, and then been tossed.

With the NHL apparently changing every team’s uni to suit the “new” Reebok sweaters/socks, get ready for howls of outrage — and one-season “cameos” for the worst of those (still-unseen) designs!

Tomorrow I’m playing in a vintage base ball (yes, two words) game on a team from work. The team we’re playing, the Wichita Bull Dozers, is based at the Old Cowtown Museum and is providing uniforms for our team (hopefully they’ll have one that fits my 6′10″ body!). I asked and we can wear cleats, so tonight or tomorrow morning I’ll be taking a Sharpie(tm) to the logos. I’ll try to post pictures on Monday or Tuesday.
BTW, the exhibit that the game is in connection with has some uni-related items, including Wilt’s all-star jersey (on loan from the Basketball Hall of Fame) and Lynette Woodward’s Globetrotters’ jersey (both played at KU). Unfortunately there aren’t any online photos.

How is that a “lame attempt” at a throwback? The Colts did use to have gray facemasks and black cleats, so it’s not like they pulled that look out of the air in order to come up with a throwback look. In fact, I wish they would go back to the great striped socks they used to wear instead of the solid blues they use now.
If any team made a lame attempt to look throwback, it was the 1994 Jets, who totally botched the old Joe Namath-style unis and decided to wear a green helmet that they had never used. It was more a “pseudo-throwback” look. I guess they were just too attached to those green helmets they wore at the time.

As a native New Orleanian and die hard Saints fan since birth. I have to say the black helmuts wouldn’t look bad if they only worn the once or twice a season but the No Fun League put the kabosh on the Seahawks attempt of two different helmets a few years ago so I don’t think it will happen.
Another rule that the NFL should change is to allow players to wear whatever number they would like. It would be great to see Reggie wearing number 5 and I know LeCharles Bentley wanted to wear 00 for the Browns. Just another silly NFL rule that needs to be changed.

When I umpired softball, pitchers were not allowed to have anything on the pitching hand or arm, but were allowed to wear things on the glove hand or arm, e.g. a wristband, or a batting glove or golf glove under the fielder’s glove. I played college ball at a small school in MA. Numerous times we played games where the entire field was completely frozen (dirt and grass). Making sliding and diving no fun at all. Pullman is about as bad as it gets weather wise, so I’m guessing that’s the reason there’s no dirt. And keeping the colors kind of makes sense when you think about runners needing to be within the basebalines, infield fly rule, etc. But yeah, it does look horrible.

I’ve been wondering this for years with college football. My Ducks would probably make the lines yellow if they could (sigh…). But schools have colors that are a more ‘natural’ than blue. from Deadspin, regarding an Ogden Raptors promotion:
From the Raptors’ latest press release: “I am often asked what one new thing will we be putting on this season. One new item will be “Bassackwards Night”. The players will be wearing shirts with the Raptors name and numbers displayed backwards. All fans will be admitted free but will have to pay to get out. In other words, if you leave in the 1st inning, you will pay $9.00. It will decrease a buck an inning. If we go extra innings, I will give every fan a $1.00 Raptor Buck for each extra inning. Also, the game will start in the 9th inning and work backwards.”

Regarding the NFL’s number rule, I’m all for being more liberal with that but to an extent. I would love to see Bush wear #5 or Larry Fitzgerald or Braylon Edwards going back to their college #1s. However, I think you have to keep some system in place because of lineman and eligible receivers. I think it would be odd to see an interior lineman on offense wearing a number less than 50 (The #00 would be OK since Jim Otto sported it for years). I think with defense it would be the opposite, it really wouldn’t look right to see a DB in a number bigger than #49. Plus you go throwback to when DL wore numbers in the 80s. Here’s my proposal:
QB, K, P: 1-19
RB, WR: 1-49; 80-89
TE: 80-99
OL: 50-79
DL: 50-99
LB: 1-59; 90-99
DB: 1-49

I have a couple theories on long/baggy pants. My college roommate once made the comment to me that with your entire leg covered it is harder to tell an actual strike zone by the pitcher, i.e. can see the knees as easily. When you blur those lines, it may be harder for a pitcher to pinpoint. While a major league pitcher is gonna be on target alot, a batter may get lucky once in a while. As far as being baggier, just take a look at jeans over the past 10 years. You don’t see anyone in wrangler stranglers walking around unless they just roped a calf. Clothing in the general public has become much more relaxed fit, it just filtered into sports. Same thing happened in basketball.

I first started noticing the mlb baggy uniforms a couple of years ago when steriods started being a topic. It seems the players we saying, “Not me, look my uniform is baggy, it is not stretched tight on my overly large, bulky muscles.”
Now for the long pants, I think that is more of a fashion trend. However, when I looked at the hemmed, not elastic pants cuffs on JD Drews photo today, my first thought was I wonder how long it is going to take the pendulum to swing to a wider, dare I say, semi-bell bottom look to the pants.

Speaking of short-lived designs…
When the Royals redid their uniforms for 2006, there were four jersey options: White, Blue, Gray, and Black.
The white and blue had the home “Royals” script, while the gray and black had road “Kansas City” script (a throwback to 1970, fwiw).
To the best of my knowledge, the black jerseys haven’t been seen since sometime in May 2006, and they don’t carry them in the online shop anymore.
Good riddance. Maybe that “ditch the black” campaign worked, it just missed the intended target.

Anent T-shirts under basketball jerseys … if players persist in wanting to sport them, despite that this looks damned tacky, why don’t coaches insist on reverting to T-shirt jerseys? Back in the day, LaSalle, LSU, Evansville, LIU, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Tulane, and the St. Louis Bombers, and the old (very old) Baltimore Bullets inter alia wore them — and they looked just fine.

Maybe for a team like the Ravens that haven’t had the uni history that the Saints have. Even though they’ve been pretty miserable for nearly the entire existence of the franchise, their unis have been around longer and (since I think they look great with the gold-black-gold combination) don’t really need any bit of change.
That being said. I could be OK with black pants with white jerseys and gold pants with black jerseys. I think that with either of those combinations a black helmet would work. But I want to VOMIT when I see teams in the “unitard” look, all-black or any other color.
To me, THIS is just as bad as THIS. The only thing that makes it worse is when the helmet matches the jersey and pants like THIS and THIS.

I have to say, the Australian women’s basketball unitards are kinda nifty. I wish the WNBA would adopt that or the post-1940’s satin look. As I mentioned during the discussion of the WNBA uniforms, the current look is kinda frumpy and look like hand-me-downs from bigger NBA guys. At least with either the unitard or the satin uniforms, the league would be adopting a unique identity that wouldn’t look half bad on the players.

A note on the thought of different colors on a football field, after Boise State debuted the SmurfTurf, the NCAA outlawed fake grass for NCAA football fields being any color other than green, except for the endzones.
Boise State was grandfathered in, which is why when they switched to field turf, there was a major discussion about it being blue or not….if they went green, they could never go back to blue. If they stayed blue, they were fine.
Idaho State will not have an orange field thankfully!

I’m watching Roger Clemens’ Class-A start on ESPN2, and I’ve noticed that Clemens has changed his cleats since the start of the game. He started out the game wearing these (the newest version of the adidas Excelsior), but since then changed into an older pair adidas Excelsiors (no pictures have been posted since his early innings, but they’re pretty much these) in the second inning after giving up a bomb in the first.
I’ll have to check into it again later, but the cleats he changed into appeared to have different colored highlights in the 3 stripes on the sides. They could be potential holdovers from his days with the Astros…

I give up. Anyway, some New York politicos want to pass a bill to ban the Giants, Jets and Red Bull from using New York because they play in New Jersey. A good idea, even though I have no idea how they can enforce this.

I’m a big English soccer fan and while I was browsing ESPNsoccernet I noticed Harry Kewell, who plays for Liverpool F.C. in the EPL, was missing the “Carlsb” from the heat applied Carlsberg sponsorship logo on his training jersey during a recent practice session. Here is a different player in a similar jersey showing what it should look like.

I’d like to make a plug for another good journalist, Gregg Easterbrook, the Tuesday Morning Quarterback. He’s got it right. The Giants and the Jets are “Jersey-A” and “Jersey-B.”
On a uni note, in the Nets/Cavs series, why have the Nets not worn navy and the Cavs not worn red?

Count me in with my fellow RU grads (’97 here) on keeping the “New Jersey” name out! Rutgers was founded in 1766 (under the name “Queen’s College”; rival King’s College changed to Columbia after independence and for a while our football teams were equally weak) and has too much history behind it to become another generic “Blah State U.” school.
I don’t mind the plain R but would rather see it be blocky and old-style. Whatever the school was using in 1869 when RU played the first-ever college football game, that’s what they should use. They can use the knight as the secondary logo; in the mid-1990s they had a great one riding a horse and carrying a lance. Very serious and tough-looking.
And as for the big baggy uniforms — anyone have the 1989 Sports Illustrated baseball preview issue? I remember reading it long ago and seeing the article on Marc Okkonen and his history of the White Sox uniforms. There were some quotes from players about their own styles, and I think I recall Ron Darling talking about how his long pants were in the spirit of Puritanism or some such. At the time there weren’t too many long-pants guys.

Here’s a photo of the bad helmet RU wore when they tried to make NJ more prominent.
Don’t think we can take alogo from the 1st game against Princeton, being as it was probably played in shirtsleeves. Not a whole lot to take from this early photo either, but at least they had the high socks look going.

THe Mets went all-black tonight, and as long as they keep beating their cross-town rivals, they can wear blue, black, orange, purple, or rainbow as far as I’m concerned.
OK, maybe not purple……

Boise State’s new uniforms are here.
Here is an article about them.

Any pics, Mr. Met? I would like to see that.
Kerry, I like the Lifesaver look. Ok, maybe not the orange, but the all-green looked good. The all/red was a tad bright, but doable.
Long live The All Blacks!

When I say “all-black”, Minna, I mean, black cap, black undershirt and black jersey: Like so.

Here’s an interesting photo from the Cubs-White Sox game (won by the Cubs, 6-3):
Angel Pagan
I spotted it on Yahoo’s summary of the game and thought for a moment that the Cubs had brought back the infintely-superior number-only home jerseys for the White Sox series. On closer inspection it turns out that the sun is positioned in just the right position to bury the player’s name in the glare. Bizarre.

I wouldn’t mind it if they used it as an alternate, like it’s supposed to be.
Unfortunately, they tend to use it as a regular uni more than their pinstripes,
Truth be told, I have more than one black Mets jersey in my closet.

Nice little exchange between Steve Berthiume and Orestes Destrade on Baseball Tonight regarding the Pirates’ red vests:
SB: I don’t know about those uniforms…
OD: Noooooo…
SB: They don’t ever do grow on you.
OD: I’m not about those right there.
Those things really are hideous. The caps, though, are nice.

No! Say it isn’t so! I would suspect more than one Mets fan on this board has a black jersey tucked away–you can’t be the only one.

I have one black Reyes home jersey, one black Beltran home jersey, and one black Wright road jersey. I also have one pinstripe Wright jersey, one snow-white Wright jersey, one snow-white Reyes jersey, and a grey Beltran road jersey.

Darling referred to his long-pants look as his “no-nonsense uniform.” I referred to it as, um, something else.

All things equal, though, I would much rather go with Ronnie’s look, because you at least had some stirrup showing, as opposed to what passes for the norm today: The quasi-bell bottom look.

Slightly old news, and probably hard to confirm: Yesterday (Thursday) the A’s trainer Larry Davis appeared to be wearing white uniform pants. They were bright white and looked like they had elastic in the cuffs.

Whoops, it seems it’s a common thing for him: Here he is in road greys (also rocking a fanny pack and some AM 360’s!).
Is this a normal thing for trainers or is he just special?

No, he’s over here!

If anyone read the article in the New Yorker it explained how Manny Ramirez started wearing baggy pants. In true Manny fashion, he stole them from another teammate who was “hot” at the time, the same way he takes undershirts and other stuff. He took them from the team’s catcher in Cleveland, who was about 3 sizes larger than Manny. Ever since then the baggy pants have been a staple of Manny.
BTW, if you have a few extra minutes, read this…

It’s amazingly interesting.

Thinking back again, now I recall Ronnie mentioning Calvinism, not Puritanism. Or maybe he mentioned both. Whichever it was, my junior-high history teacher from that year will probably be disappointed that I’m getting them confused!
