The e-mails started coming in on Tuesday evening — not a ton of them, but a steady trickle, all from readers who said something like this: “I’m watching the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech baseball game, and Tech is wearing some seriously weird-ass batting helmets.”
I couldn’t find the game on TV (apparently it was on Fox College Sports, or some other channel I don’t get), so I started poking around Ga. Tech’s web site, figuring I’d find some photos from other games. But all the pics seemed to show pretty basic batting helmets.
Fortunately, reader Brent Hardman was at the game (that’s him and his wife, Christy, posing with the UGA mascot, Hairy Dawg), and he had his camera. To see what he saw, look here, here, and here. Yowza! “Looks like a cross between the Arena League and Top Gun-style fighter helmets,” writes Hardman — a pretty astute analysis, I’d say.
As you can see, the helmets say “Worth” on the back. I’d heard of the Worth brand before but didn’t know much about it, so I went to their site and discovered that they’ve been around since the early 1900s and were among the pioneers of aluminum bats (which, according to their corporate timeline, were at one point used by prison guards to quell an inmate riot — gee, there’s a proud moment). Their current line of fielder’s gloves all have comic book-esque names like the Silencer, the Mayhem, and the Avenger, which should give you an idea of what sort of market they’re aiming for these days. They also make a chest protector that sort of looks like it has pockets.
Anyway: The helmet model being worn by Georgia Tech is the Worth Prodigy. Obviously, all the stripes and color inlays are designed to create a branded look, same as with the Cool-Flo (no surprise, since Worth and Rawlings, which makes the Cool-Flo, are both owned by K2).
One thing I noticed right away is that the Prodigy shown in basic stock photos has a dial in the back (this is presumably what the Worth web site describes as the helmet’s “dial-adjustable ring fit system”), but this dial is missing from the Tech helmets, which seems to leave the lower part of the head exposed. And I’m not the only one who noticed that: When I called Tech’s sports info department to learn more about the helmets, spokesperson Cheryl Watts told me, unprompted, “I don’t know if you noticed, but it comes up very high in the back. Some of us in the press box were like, ‘Does that cover his head?’ ”
Watts also explained that Tuesday wasn’t the first time Tech had worn the new lids — they’d also worn them last weekend against N.C. State. “Worth, who’s our bat and glove sponsor, approached us earlier in the season, and Coach [Danny] Hall said we could try them out,” she said. “That’s how we got started with them. When we saw them, we were all like, ‘Oh, gosh,’ just because they look so different.”
I asked Watts a few additional questions, and she later e-mailed back with the following info:
• Worth had a prototype at the last Coaches’ Convention and asked if Tech players would wear the helmet, and Coach Hall said that they probably would.
• The team just received the helmets in recently, which is why they hadn’t worn them earlier in the season.
• They intend to wear them at home games only, and it won’t be every home game either. We have a huge helmet case that we travel with, which can only hold one of the two sets of helmets that we have — and since we have worn the blue with everything in the past, it’s just more logical to take those.
Watts had also hoped to provide me with some reactions from the players, but that hasn’t happened yet. Meanwhile, the most interesting thing about the Prodigy is that is that it continues the move toward batting helmets that look nothing like caps. I’ll let you decide whether you think that’s a good thing (I’m sure you can guess where I stand).

Research Project: Reader David Smalling suggests that all the fuss regarding Schilling’s sock presents a good opportunity to create a gallery of bloody uniforms — a good idea, if we can get enough of them. Know of any good pics? Send your tips here.
Meanwhile, XXXXXL-sized thanks to everyone who contributed numerological suggestions for yesterday’s ESPN column. I literally couldn’t have done this one without you, people — can’t even begin to tell you have much I appreciate it, and I’m truly sorry I couldn’t thank all of you by name.
Hell Jade on Wheels: I’m in the market for a used car, and I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that I’d like it to be green. Thought I had a deal last week to buy a green Civic, but it fell through (don’t even ask), and I’m having a tough time tracking down another emerald chariot. So: If anyone in the NYC area knows of a small-ish used green car for sale, $10,000 or less, please get in touch.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Interesting article here about how several of the Red Sox are wearing little pedometers on their shoes. … Man, I warned them about this way back in November. … Great article here about the patches worn by New York City firefighters. … Rugby news from New Zealand, where the All Blacks have a new jersey (with thanks to Caleb Borchers). … Nice catch regarding Carmelo Anthony’s out-of-date sweatpants here. … Latest reason to move to St. Louis: According to an item toward the bottom of this page, most of the Cardinals have stopped wearing the new BP caps (good catch by Adam Morris and Elena Elms). … Interesting note from Greg Necastro, who ordered himself a Montgomery Biscuits cap (yes, best team name ever, best mascot ever, and so on) and was surprised to discover that “the majority of the graphic is an appliqué sewn onto the cap, but the feet are separate and [embroidered] directly onto the hat panels. … I emailed the retail manager for the Biscuits. He said he really didn’t know why the cap was done like that but that it’s been that way since New Era made the first hat back in 2003.” … Shouldn’t there be some rule about yellow vs. orange? Additional pics here, here, and here, but trust me, none of these shots really captures how bright this game was. I don’t think they even bothered to turn on the lights in the arena. … Wondering where Michael Irvin gets those bizarro suits? Okay, probably not, but look here anyway (with thanks to Randy Miller). … Brian Urlacher’s contraband cap is doing brisk business on eBay. … According to a small item buried at the bottom of this page, the Steelers will unveil a 75th-season throwback uni today. If they follow the Eagles’ example and try to match their 1933 design, they’ll end up with something like this (much like what they wore for the NFL’s 1994 throwback program). … Update: No such luck regarding the Steelers’ throwbacks — full gallery of pics available here.

Just to add to the “why do they wear that number?” thing, since there was only (by my count) one soccer player on the list:
Jeff Parke of the New York Red Bulls wears #60 because he was the 60th and final player taken in the 2004 draft.
Jeff Cunningham of Real Salt Lake switched his number to 74 before the 2006 season because he had scored 74 regular-season goals in his career in MLS. He scored 16 goals last year, so he wears #90 this year and plans to petition for a three-digit number if he scores 10 or more this year.
Jaime Moreno of DC United used to wear #9, but switched to #99 when Freddy Adu joined the league in 2004 and took #9. Now Adu has been traded to Real Salt Lake, but Moreno still wears #99.
And Real Salt Lake’s Andy Williams switched from his longtime #7 to #77 this year, but I have no idea why.

If the Cool-Flo and the Worth Prodigy really take root, and the trend toward football-looking helmets persists, I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing logos on the sides of the helmet instead of the front.

From the front those helmets don’t look too bad (not great, but not awful). I don’t like GT having a the two color stripping though. But from the back those helmets are hideous.

Regarding the ESPN number roster. You have Yzerman wearing #19 in honor of Trottier, well when Joe Thornton was still in Boston he switched from the #6 to the #19 in honor of Yzerman.
The reason he originally wore #6 was his agent suggested it. He told Joe that it would be good luck to wear a single digit in Boston because all of the other single digits (except #1) were either retired or about to be.

That same season, 1994, I just remember a monday night game on Halloween (I think) between the Packers and Bears, both wearing throwback unis from the 20s or 30s. I haven’t been able to find a picture from that game on the web…but it was awesome to see those two teams playing in the old throwback unis. (The Bears, Packers, and the Steelers that Paul linked to today were the best, I thought.)

As far as purple. I’m not a fan of it for most teams. I do like it on the Ravens. (I like when they play at night, and the purple kind of skews more toward a sort of blue, under the lights.) I hate it when mixed with Orange for Clemson…but I don’t loathe the color the way many around here do.

I saw the Malarchuk game on TV when it happened, and my thought as a goalie was “HOLY CRAP HE’S A DEAD MAN”….he owes his life to the training staff….horrid…what was worse was his backup Jacques Cloutier, who was the starter until Malarchuk’s hot streak, came in and had to play and he had WHITE PADS…..not a good sight.

So yesterday somebody posted a pic of the ‘99 Rangers uni’s. As I looked at them they looked a lot like the current Angels uni’s. So I did a little Photoshop (I’m not very good at it), removed the R and increased the size of the A and to me they look very similar.

‘Burgh throwbacks: WEAK.
And, judged in light of the criticism the Eagles’ throwbacks received here yesterday, even the ‘94 ones (Barry Foster!) are pretty severe miscarriages of the ‘33 models. The design is there, but the cut and fabric are way off. (ie, same problem the Iggles’ 75th-anny ones have.) The 75th-anny Steelers garb is just totally half-assed. Edge: Iggles throwbacks.

What is the story behind this?
Got his carotid artery slashed by a skate. Blood spurted out like 10 feet, it was horrible. Fortunately a trainer on the scene was a former combat medic and knew what to do, and he was all right. He could easily have died, though
The game was at the Aud, which had both teams’ locker rooms on the same end of the ice. Malarchuk was fortunate to be at that end of the rink when he was injured, resulting in a quicker trip to the hospital.

You might try a hat stretcher. You could also try the trick of putting it over your knee and pulling until you hear 2 “pops.” This was actually recommended on the New Era site. The link I had is gone now, but here is what it said:
A little too tight?
What happens is the sweatband does its job and collects any moisture when you are wearing the cap. Without a head to hold its shape and size, it will shrink as it dries. For starters, grab your cap from the rear of the cap, place it over your knee and give a good hard yank. You will hear some popping noises. That’s O.K. Stop pulling after you hear a couple of these noises. If you pull too hard and too long, you could rip a seam. We DON’T want that!! What you are actually doing is breaking the sizing, which is a stiff plastic strap that we sew into the cap for shape and size maintenance.

It’s a shame that the Eagles and Steelers aren’t playing each other this year. You could have both teams wearing Phil-Pitt Steagles throwbacks and it would look like an intrasquad scrimmage. Only problem there is that in those days, teams only had one jersey, so you couldn’t pull off a “dark vs. white” game.
#134 by Mike on 04.27.07 3:24 pm |
Does the NFL have a rule not allowing teams to wear colored jerseys in the same game, or it’s just teams opt to wear the white when the opposing team wears the colored jersey?
#135 by JeffB on 04.27.07 3:26 pm |
Having just read the ESPN jersey number column, I was reminded of one of my favorites, Jordin Tootoo. When he first got to Nashville his preferred number 22 was taken, (get it? Two-Two) so he went with 55, or 22 upside down.
#136 by KT on 04.27.07 3:34 pm |
I THINK the NFL rule is that someone has to wear white, but I’m not 100% sure.
In soccer, you can have a red against a blue or some other contrasting combination, but I am not sure it can happen in the NFL.
I do like the Steelers’ throwbacks, too, and am glad they didn’t go quite as far back as they did in 1994 for inspiration.

I don’t know if someone’s already discussed this or not but in the last few days a lot of people mentioned the Charlie Sheen commercial and the difference in the jersey stripes between one shot and the other. I just saw an alternate version of the commercial, I’m not sure if it’s a shorter version of it or if it’s just purely because they noticed the inconsistency in the uniforms so they fixed it.
Sorry if someone’s already discussed this…

Thanks, but I’m not blind. I think I’m able to tell the difference between this and this. In fact, they showed David Wright twice during batting practice, and he was definitely, absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, wearing the home blue cap.
Brian K., that makes a lot of sense, since a few Cardinal players are moving away from the BP cap and wearng their regular 59FIFTY cap. But, how odd that the Mets would choose to use their home blue cap, which they don’t even wear at home, and use it for BP on the road. Not that I’m complaining, but I’m surprised they didn’t just use the black caps or the black/blue caps, since that is presumably what they’re going to wear this weekend. Unless they wear the black alternates this entire weekend series, that means they packed all three of their caps for this road trip.
On the other hand, this is team that wears their self-proclaimed road caps almost exclusively at home, so who knows what goes on inside their heads?

I like the Steelers throwbacks a lot! I think they did an excellent job of duplicating the entire uniform– jersey, pants, socks.
COMPARE
I’m not sure why people are disappointed that they didn’t use the 1933 design. For one thing, they already did that once– they’ve never made a throwback for this one before, and it was used for a lot longer period of the team’s history.
For another, it’s simply not possible to duplicate the look of those rugby-style uniforms very well with current uniform materials and padding on 300-pound players.
The only thing is that I’m not sure the helmets are accurate– the Steelmark symbol was only used on a yellow helmet for part of one year– 1962– and it said “Steel,” not “Steelers” on it. I think the change to “Steelers” came either after or at the same time as the change to a black helmet. Haven’t been able to confirm this for sure, though, as there is conflicting information about it out there.

Paul, SNY is going to show a replay of the game Saturday at 1 PM. If you get a chance to watch it or Tivo it, you’ll be able to see it. It was early on in the game, maybe around Wright’s first at-bat, because they were commenting about how Wright was getting batting tips from Carlos Beltran (who also was wearing a blue cap). I’ll set my box to record it and maybe see if I can get a screen shot of it.
On another note, they showed a close-up of one of the Nationals’ players wearing stirrups, REAL stirrups, not the red socks, and Ron Darling made a comment about how beautiful they looked. Then they (Darling and Gary Cohen) commented about how the player (who I can’t recall right now) probably had to look through an old box full of uniforms from the old Senators in order to find those, or maybe he borrowed them from one of the coaches. Good stuff.

Wish Hines Ward would have gone with black cleats…… maybe they’ll wear black cleats the day of? Any time a team uses throwbacks, they should go with black cleats (unless of course, they didn’t use black cleats when they used those unis i.e. 49ers with the “Montana-era” throwbacks).

With apologies to our host (and the A’s), those Suns-Lakers shots remind me why I hate fluorescent orange, green, and yellow. They are worse than any purple. If it works on a highlighter, it probably makes a bad uni.
And, Paul, was it you who stole my metallic green 1977 Impala in the summer of 1991? ;)

Pittsburgh Steelers throwbacks, I like the helmet, but I think the jersey looks cheap. It also looks bad with white pants. Fake human mascots scare me, but Hines Ward is a looker. To those who say it’s just one game, true. However, this is UniWatch, which means, we watch unis–including those worn for one game.
22 upside down is still 22. Yes, I did write it on a piece of paper and turn the paper upside down.
New Zealand All-Blacks, that is not black. At best, the new jerseys are dark gray. However, they still remain my favorite aesthetic team, and the guy on the right (with the tat on his arm) is FINE!
The Phoenix Suns need to burn those orange unis; they are burning my retinas and causing irreparable harm.
Bloody uniforms, gross. Fat guys in uniforms, funny.

I came across this tonight. Does anybody know of other non-sports related people to have a number retired and does this mean none of the teams at MSG could ever use 12? FYI, Billy Joel’s number was retired when he set a new MSG record for most sell-outs there in a single tour at 12. At the same time he set a record for most concerts there with 48.

on the 22/55 thing…don’t spin the paper; flip it over and look at the number through the back of the paper.

Then that would be backwards and not upside down as originally stated.
Watch the ‘Video of the Day’ commercial. Funny, and somewhat uni-related. Clever.

From TMQ and his mocking the draft:
28. New England Patriots: Vera Wang, couturière
Bill Belichick must stop wearing ripped-sleeve hoodies on the sidelines. Maybe if Wang designed a smashing selection of ball gowns and cocktail dresses for him…
TMQ is getting into ‘uni’ critiquing as well.

Two things I seem to remember about Bobby Layne: he didn’t wear a facemask; and he once drove his car into a Pittsburgh streetcar — and later claimed the streetcar should have swerved to avoid him.

The NFL should ban the hoodie from the sidelines as they promote a “gangsta culture.” Give the coaches a dress code simular to the players. Fine ‘em $10K for wearing sweatshirts on the sidelines.

Perhaps the Steelers should debut these throwbacks against the Eagles in preseason? The Eagles could wear their yellow throwbacks against them.

Noticed that too. Not only were they some killer stripes, but stirrups too. Too bad they didn’t help him win.

I’m not sure if anyone else mentioned this yet(don’t have time to sift through the comments) but does anyone think thats it wierd how the article referring to the Cards BP caps compared Hancock oversleeping to Darryl Kile and now he has been victim to the same fate. I got chills after reading it.
