New ESPN column today — here’s the link.
Meanwhile: When NFL teams go the throwback route, the retro uniform usually includes at least some of the colors from the team’s regular color scheme.
That’s why yesterday’s move by the Eagles is so interesting. To mark the team’s upcoming 75th season, the club unveiled a commemorative logo (which will be worn as a patch on the home and road jerseys) and a throwback outfit — complete with its own helmet — that bears exactly zero resemblance to the team’s current look. Green? Silver? White? Fuhgeddaboudit.
The colors, however incongruous they may appear, are rooted in Eagles and Philly history. The team originally wore blue and yellow — the same colors found on the Philly city flag — back in 1933, and the original design has long been featured in historical illustrations like this (here’s a fridge magnet version) and has also been available for purchase as a throwback garment.
Too bad the new throwbacks don’t have long sleeves like the originals did. And why is the yoke so shiny? Like, is it made of recycled Schmidt’s cans or what? Still, I kinda dig the Nordic colors, especially since they’ll only be worn once (Sept. 23rd, against the Lions), and the helmet is sort of endearingly clunky. I like that they went without TV numbers, too. And best of all … wait for it … striped socks! Now let’s hope they don’t screw up the look by Philly tagging it. (You can see a bit more of the throwbacks in this three-minute video, and there’s an extended sequence beginning at the 21-minute mark of this video.)
Incidentally, the Eagles also unveiled a virtual museum yesterday (strong suggestion: click on the “Skip Intro” button), and it’s got some killer stuff, including footage of Steve Van Buren running through the blizzard in the 1948 NFL title game, and Bob Brown playing in some serious mud. Kudos all around.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Ryan Dempster is really setting new standards in cold-weather gear (but hey, good for him for keeping his pants high-cuffed, even if it means his shins are chilly). … Carlos Guillen’s game has apparently gone straight down the crapper ever since the league office told him to tuck his pockets back in. … Speaking of things that need to be tucked in. … The saga of Curt Schilling’s bloody sock is getting weirder all the time.

Honestly, if you look at that picture, Curt has a red stain on the back of his ankle already. Since hospitals don’t use Gatorade towels, this picture was not taken at a hospital. In fact, doctors and nurses are required to clean the area before and after the surgery is done, meaning this red stain on the back of Curt’s ankle wouldn’t be there.

As far as teams ditching a color scheme, Green Bay used to be navy and gold instead of green and gold. Geez, people will believe anything they hear on TV these days. As someone who’s had stitches pull open (only about 8, and they more like ripped open rather than pulled open, but it leaves a wonderful scar), I can tell you emphatically that they don’t usually leave “puddles” of blood when that happens. Wounds are stitched on multiple levels, starting with the deepest part of the incision first. Only if that part of the wound pulls the stitches will you bleed puddles. If, as is likely the case with Schilling, you pull the epidermal stitches only, you’ll bleed a bit. In fact, you’ll bleed just about enough to make a large spot on a sock. Those of you doubting his injury or the bloody sock are real are of course welcome to test your theory by slicing into your own tendons, suturing your wound, then throwing a few innings while wearing sanitaries and stirrups. Let us know the results, k?

Joke, if it wasn’t reported in by a member of the media, no one would question it. I have received numerous stitch jobs from my hockey-playing days, and I can certainly tell you that a gaping wound on a joint bleeds for a while when it is being used. Why? The blood doesn’t scab. You keep breaking the scab, it keeps bleeding.
If there is cloth against a bleeding wound, the scab forms with the cloth stuck to it. If that happens, anytime the cloth pulls the scab off (like when a player moves), the wound would start bleeding again until it scabs over again. I’ve had to pull shinpads off my leg, and literally peel a scab off a cotton cushion in behind my shinpad because the sweat soften the scab to the point where it stuck to the cotton.
Again, what Schilling did is amazing. If he hyperbolized it, that kind of diminishes the heroicism.

Alright, I am a Red Sox fan, and can admit Schill can be an asshole, so I can see where people would question it. But as far how much blood coming in to question, and saying there should have been a lot more is inaccurate because he didn’t have a cut, or a gash or any kind of typical wound that would require stitches. The blood came from Dr. Bill Morgan stiching his skin down to whatever he did so the tendon wouldn’t move, so the blood came from the actual stitchs, so there wouldn’t have been a lot. As far as it turning brown, it does, but when it dries. I’m sure he was sweating a bit and that kept the sock wet, as well as the blood. Whether it’s fake or not, I don’t know, and don’t care. Schill can be an ass, but that was a gutsy performance real blood or not, and if it was fake, and it got into everyone’s head, good job on his part by using the injury to his advantage in the playoffs.

Rather than focusing on the fact that the fans got to see 12 innings of great baseball played by the best in the league, including one of the most amazing catches in baseball history, everyone whined it ended in a tie. The reason they switched in 1979-80 was to join the other two Pittsburgh pro teams so that the city had one colour scheme. The Boston Bruins fought the Penguins over this colour change because the Bruins said that black and yellow were synonymous with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins lost the fight, and the Penguins switched over. The Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins all wore black and yellow, and those colours became synonymous with Pittsburgh pro sports.

I’m a devoted number-only advocate, but in football the names don’t really look that bad because the way the jerseys are constructed, there’s a few inches of blank space above the seam separating the shoulder portion from the body, and without a nameplate, that would have to be blank since the number can’t cross over that seam. The problem with the Eagles is that they put both the name and the number below it, making it look a little goofy.

I’m just gonna throw this out here, but my dream World Series would be Yankees-Giants, these teams have my favorite looking uni’s in MLB to me, maybe because I follow them closely, but they share the same concept when it comes to uniforms, both home jerseys have no names on them, they each only have two [home/road] uni’s, basic colors, and original black colors..these teams just look proper in black. They haven’t switched every 3 years like some teams to keep up with gangsta-playa stuff. Also, after what Bonds said about A-Rod, my guess would be the whole baseball world would love to watch, and make for some sweet uni-watching.
Yes I’m biased, cause I love these teams..

In general I hate when this forum turns into cap watch. I think we can all agree that New Era, Nike, Reebok, etc. can make some pretty hideous stuff. that being said, I think it would be hard to design these caps. People that wear caps come from all walks, from people like me that only wear what’s on an MLB field to rappers who wear a brand new 5950 every day. (I would love to see LL Cool J’s closet). So to appease everyone they make a ton of crap – I mean caps. It’s almost like “let’s throw it all against the wall and see what sticks”.

I am on the side of the minority that does not like the Iggles’ throwback. Too shiny and too powdery blue.
I am for the Iggles’ black unis as I love black and would like to see all teams with a black alternate (except for the Mets, of course).
The bouncers at the club I went to Tuesday night were wearing scrawl caps. They were lucky the hats had 612 on them (Mpls area code) and not a team logo, or I would have had to do something about it.
Mark in Shiga, thanks for clearing up the Chimay price confusion. Yes, that is a bit pricey.
#107 by ESS on 04.26.07 2:16 pm |
The Eagles having a throwback to the Frankford Yellowjackets is a bit misleading. The Eagles did not spring from the Yellowjackets, but were formed 2 years after the Yellowjackets folded. The Eagles’ original owners bought the actual franchise rights to the area and formed the Eagles, quite separately from the remains of the Yellowjackets.
This website is an unbelievable resource for Philadelphia football history, much of which even this lifelong Eagles fan had been ignorant of.
And Sweden on the Delaware is a perfect title, seeing as how there is a museum dedicated to the Swedes that settled this area 3 minutes from my office and almost directly across the street from the Eagles’ corporate offices.

The Eagles throwback brings up a question: How many other teams have entirely ditched a colour-scheme to go in a new direction?
The “official” colors of the University of Colorado are silver and gold. Most of the time, they use black as the accent color, but for a good part of the 80s they used sky blue.
It looked fine on their teams, but not so much on the marching band. 200+ kids in sky-blue western-style jackets with yellow fringe….it was like a bizarre Porter Wagoner cult.

ok, so the All Star jerseys are just for BP and not for the game, it would be cool if they designed all star ball caps, base the colors of the home team holding the all star game, and the visiting league could have the previous World Series winners colors.
Like this year, make the NL ball cap Giants colors, a simple NL backed up by a star, and the AL would have Cardinal colors, a simple AL backed up by a star. Then the all star game would actually have a little more meaning. The winner of the World Series would get recognition even at the all star game.

I wonder… did Heinze with his 57 get any kickbacks or sponsorship from the company?

Lemieux has never publicly stated it, and he hated the comparisons to Gretzky.
“Lemieux began wearing No. 66 during his early junior days. Whether he flipped Gretzky’s number on its head as an homage or in defiance is unclear. But it would set in motion a career’s worth of comparisons that Lemieux would spend much of his time discouraging.”

Some association football related colour scheme shifts:
Northern Ireland went from Blue and White to Green and White at some stage before World War II, primarily to avoid a clash of colours with Scotland in the Home Nations Championship. In the late 90s they adopted a Green and Navy quartered home strip (with White and Red away version,) and they currently have Green and White home colours, with a Blue, White and Black away.
Austria started out with Germanic White shirts and Black shorts, with a Red and White flag-inspired away; they reversed this only in this century, iirc.
Juventus famously went from Pink and Black to the familiar Notts County stripes in 1903, occasionally using pink as an away colour.
Leeds United originally wore yellow and blue (town colours)… manager Don Revie changed them to all white in the early sixties to emulate Real Madrid. European Trophies won by Real Madrid: 12, European Trophies won by Leeds: 2
Dundee United originally played in White and Black, until they ditched the White(!) for Tangerine in the late sixties.
Aberdeen were formed in 1903 wearing the black and gold (but not being anywhere near Pittsburgh) before taking up an all red effort in 1939, crucially before Liverpool had a similar idea.
Yeah, that’s all I can remember off the top of my head for now…

I’m really shocked that, 167 posts into this mess, no one has mentioned the preposterous amount of advertising Reebok has received from this three-year imbroglio. Is there a baseball fan in America who doesn’t know offhand what kind of spikes Schill wears?

Paul, thanks for the love for my former Portsmouth, Ohioan Al Oliver. There is a mural on the floodwall for Al, but I can’t find a picture of it anywhere. Its got a great picture of his old pirates uni as well as a number of older baseball uniforms.

The D-backs did it this year. The Astros a few years ago. Going back a few years, the Phillies went from all blue in the mid 40s to a red-blue combo then to all red. I believe the Giants used to wear blue in the 40s as well before moving to the black/orange they’ve worn since. The As changed from red/blue to green/gold in the early 60s.

First off, I’ve always been a fan of the reason people wore their numbers, mainly because I always tried to wear 4 (I’m the John the fourth) or 00 (Baseball players just don’t wear #00), so it a great article. Nice job of bringing all those great anecdotes to one place.
The Eagles jerseys, in my opinion, need to lose the shininess, otherwise they look sweet. That may be the only Lions game I’ll watch this year.
Lastly, Schilling has no say in what the media says about his sock. The media as we all know will exploit any angle it can to garner interest. It’s not Schill’s fault the media made such a big story out of it. As for Curt’s personality, I think it’s refreshing to see an athlete get involved in something other than self-promotion. The guy is involved with numerous charities, including K ALS, he’s involved politically, and he seems to take the time to research what he gets involved in, unlike most athletes who look at getting involved in something as “good PR.”
Once again, phenomnal article over on ESPN, Paul. Keep up the great work.

Random thought about numbers: suppose Acie Law IV (the dude from Texas A&M) were to go to an NBA team. #1) do they let his nameplate read LAW IV? If no, #2) how sweet would it be for him to wear #4 as opposed to his college #1 (or any other number)? There hasn’t been such an obvious player/number fit since that May 17 guy.

Awesome ESPN column today. That really turned out to be a fascinating list.
I knew about John Buck’s reason for wearing #14, but not before the Royals had already had John Buck Jersey Night featuring his #2 jersey. At any given Royals game you’ll still see several of those obsolete “BUCK 2″ jerseys.
Also, I couldn’t find any pictures of Junior Ortiz wearing #0, but I distinctly remember him switching to it in 1991 or so. I thought it had something to do with his last initial, but I also recall Ortiz being quoted as saying “anytime you want to do something, what do you do? You dial O.” I don’t think I’ve ever gotten so lonely on Friday night that I’ve called the operator, but whatever. That stuck in my mind for some reason.

The story on Griffey’s number in today’s column is not entirely accurate. When he joined the Reds, he wanted to wear 24 but it had been retired (for Tony Perez) by the Reds and Tony would not allow it to be un-retired so Griffey could wear it. The number 30 was his second choice.

Rumor out of Green Bay is that the Pack have offered to give up their 1st and 4th round picks to Kansas City for Larry Johnson. That would be weird to see LJ in Green and Gold… but really good at the same time for us Packer fans!

That is a nice throwback Eagles hat at the top of the page. Is that a real design or is it just wishful thinking? I am skeptical about it because it is too straight-forward, not fussy enough, and the Reebok vector is monochrome, making for logo camouflage, as opposed to logo creep. (Wow, I really am a pessimist, aren’t I?)

Oh PS re: the numbers article: great to see some of my suggestions get in. I know they’re mine because they sound like what I sent Mr. Lukas in an email. (I submitted Mike Ricci #40, #92, and #98 at the very least.) Thanks, Mr. Lukas! Anyway, I thought Barry Zito picked #75 because he thought it made a “neat shelf” for his last name.
And by the way, a bonus number could have been 100. I do not recall the link or the player’s name, but had a photo gallery of the best NCAA football players by number. For the centennial, one player got to wear 100.

Also, did you happen to notice that the new Argentine midfielder for the Wizards, Carlos Marinelli was either wearing his shorts backwards, or his number 10 was printed on the rear of the shorts by mistake.
I went back and looked at the video highlights, and the number must have been put on the back of the shorts by mistake. The Wizards’ crest is on the front of the right thigh of Maranelli’s shorts, which is where it should be. In fact, if you look at the game photos on this page you can see Maranelli with the number in the right place and the wrong place.
It rained hard during the first half of the game. I wonder if he wanted to change at halftime, the staff couldn’t find another set of #10 shorts, and screwed up the heat transfer while trying to get something together in a hurry.

2+3=5
3+5=8
5+8=13
8+13=21
13+21=34 (not 44)
21+34=55
I have zero interest in math, but that pattern struck me. Also {2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23} are all prime numbers.

Several NYRB players have very odd configurations on the back of their jerseys, both home and away as I’ve suffered through 2 defeats of my FC Dallas team.
Anyway, too late for the column, but #60 Jeff Parke apparently wears 60 because he was the 60th and final pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. I thought that was pretty creative.
And totally not uni-related but I cannot STAND Eric Wynalda. Tommy Smythis excellent but Wynalda will not shut up and let him talk. Just my opinion.

Post-gazzett.com says the Steelers will display a uniform to be worn one game this season today. Also a question for you PAC-10 Bball fans…”When did UCLA darken the color of their road jerseys?” Refering to the uniform they wore in the Final Four is that their normal road uni or is it an alternate?

Funny I thought that the title was referring to Sweden’s colors on Delaware’s football helmet. But perhaps you need to be a Blue Hen like me before you start thinking that way.
#215 by Elijah on 04.29.07 9:13 am |
Hey, Paul! How about some love for the Steelers Throwbacks? At least we’re consistent. We’ve had the same colors throught our history… Which, oh by the way, includes more NFL Championships (5) than the UCLA/ Sweden/ Philly Eagels have (3).
#216 by Win on 05.12.07 7:44 am |
Someone brought up the Phillies, for having just been baby blue and maroon(I want to see that back, at least the maroon) They were at one point wearing blue, they were also called the blue jays for eventual irony and heartbreak in 1993. The 76s sort of ditched their old style for something I have trouble describing. The Diamondbacks did it really recently if I remember correct. Its just hard to remember because most of the teams involved with color changes aren’t memorable when they do.

The Kansas City midfielder was wearing his shorts backwards.
Also, nowhere in civilization’s history has a group dressed as bad as the first year MLS set of uniforms for all their teams.
Real, real tacky.
