Every week or so, like clockwork, someone e-mails to ask me where they can find striped stirrups for their softball team. Or vest jerseys for their kid’s Little League team. Or caps with some sort of special embroidery. I happen to know where to find all of the above, and plenty more, but it usually means sending people to a variety of specialty suppliers.

From now on, though, I’ll probably just point people toward a site brought to my attention by reader Matt Ciccone: Essesco.com. The site itself doesn’t look like much, but start clicking around and you’ll find that they’ve basically created a compilation of athletic apparel catalogs, and it looks like they’ve got just about everything covered. You want baseball or softball unis? They’ve got a ton of options, including uniforms made by Rawlings, Reebok, Majestic, and a bunch of lesser-known brands. You want belts and stirrups? You want jackets and windbreakers? Trophies and ribbons? It’s all here.

And it’s not just baseball — they’ve also got football, basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, track, and swimming uniforms, plus warm-up suits, cheerleading outfits, and a lot more. The site’s interface leaves a lot to be desired (they need a designer, like, yesterday), but if you’re looking to outfit a team, they’ve probably got what you’re looking for — or even what you didn’t realize you were looking for.

Numerology Update: Big, big thanks to everyone who helped out with the “Who wore what number for what reason?” project. Thanks to your efforts, we now have a complete roster from 0 to 99 (including a few bonus numbers you might not have thought of). I literally couldn’t have done it without you, people — thanks a heap.

The full numerical rundown will form the basis of my next ESPN column, which should run tomorrow.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of buying uniforms and such, reader Alan Kreit recently got a pair of stirrups for his Little Leaguer son, Ethan (he says he bought them here). Unfortunately, Ethan wore his pants a bit lower for his actual game, but he still looked better than his teammates. … Wanna see something really weird? Check out the Mizuno-ized versions of MLB jerseys shown here and here (with thanks to Dwayne White). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Mariano Rivera has a Bible verse called out on his glove (with thanks to Jeff Spry for the screen shot). … Also from yesterday: Wondering why the White Sox wear black socks? You’re not alone. … More trademark litigation silliness (with thanks to Seth Horowitz). … Pretty cool Boston Marathon attire — especially if you’re gonna get married (further details here, with thanks to Uni Watch intern Vince Grzegorek). … Northeastern State has unveiled a new logo.

Ditch the black! Ditch the Purple!

Those Mizuno-ized logos are freaking me out. Is there a big market in Japan for that kind of thing?

Many of the examples are instantly recognizable as being derivative of a Major League logo, while with others the relationship is not so apparent. The Reds/Mizuno logo, for example, looks very generic.

Someone a couple days back called the Brewers alternates the best around…I guess the Crew are playing well in them, possibly at the expense of the ‘82 throwback getup.

http://www.jsonline....

Those Mizuno things must be logo creep in the first degree, but at least they know how to make a Mets logo without any black.

Wow, that site would have come in handy when I had to order the company softball unis last year.

Weird. I don’t like the Olde English M. I’ll take my D.

Is any else having a problem seeing the mizuno stuff

How do teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants break out of slumps if they don’t have an alternate jersey to wear? :) I know baseball players are superstitious, but it still seems silly to start making what is supposed to be an alternate jersey the regular attire. At least the NFL gets it right by limiting use of the alternate jersey… it’s too bad baseball doesn’t come up with a similar policy.

I thought the Giants did have alternate jerseys.

I never got to play little league on and filed 1/16 as nice as the one Ethan was playing on? I didn’t see one piece of broken glass or a bare dirt spot at all!

And I never played on a field with a fence until I was in High School! Man Ethan, you have it good!

My bad, these are the Giants alternate jerseys.

Paul: heres a number for you- back in the mid to late 90’s Ivan Zamorano (Chilean soccer player) was transfered over to Italy to play with Inter Milan. He wanted #9 but that was already taken by Ronaldo, Ivan was under contract with a sponsor (guess who) and I believe was required to wear the number 9, per his contract with them, so Ivan and Inter came up with the idea of having him wear the number 1+8 on his jersey, yep that was 1+8 because when added it truly is 9 (18 is 18, the little + was really stitched in between the 1 and 8)

Anyone else see the white GT batting helmets last night at the GT/UGA game at Turner Field. Never seen anything like that…anyone have a pic?

Here’s a pic of Ivan Zamorano.

I thought the Giants did have alternate jerseys.

I thought this was it? hehe

Northeastern State has unveiled a new logo.

Something about that bird doesn’t look right. No way that head and those wings could be the same bird, or else the bird has a seriously long and contorted neck. Maybe it’s just supposed to be a bird’s head, with some wings behind it, but not necessarily its wings.
It looks good if you just glance at it, but the more you look at it, the more you realize that it looks like a bird head is propped up in front of a headless set of wings.
I’m guessing they did it like that so that the wings and the head would both be centered over the name, and so that they could have the bird looking to the right.

Kudos to Alan Kreit. Now that is fine parenting. Teach ‘em the right way when they’re young.

me too. im still trying to figure out why those “logos” were even developed. probably a mizuno intern with graphic design experience who wanted to stick out put them together…

in reading that article it stated that the bucks may take brandan wright with their pick. which would be somewhat interesting.
in 2006 the bucks chose david noel, #34 from UNC
in 2007 they could potentially choose, brandan wright, #34 from UNC

2 consecutive years of drafting a player from the same college, who wore the same number… i cant see that its ever happened before…

The Bible verse on Mo Rivera’s glove is very popular. For the unknowing, it is (paraphrased) “I can do all things through God, who strengthens me.” I have auto’d cards from Bryce Paup to David Segui that use that inscription. I was an umpire for 15 years, and always inscribed it under my cap. My number for all sports has always been 44, 4 for the 4, 1-3 for the 13th verse.

So, I haven’t really followed the NBA closely since Jerry Krause destroyed my beloved Bulls, but I was watching the Bulls-Heat gmae night, and a question occurred to me. Has adidas really sanitized all the team warm-ups to be identical, except for color and team name on the front? Did they really get rid of these and the even better white version, as well as countless other great team-specific warm-ups?

If you go the the Northeastern website and poke around, you’ll see that not only is the logo new, but the name is, too. They use to be the Redmen and the Lady Reds. Weird thing is that the color is not new–they went by Redmen and Lady Reds while wearing green.

I meant Northeastern State, but you knew that.

If somebody has video or pictures of the starting pitcher for the Indians last night, he had some white deal on the black underbill of his hat. I could never get a good look at it.

Crap, I meant to say 4 for the CHAPTER and 1+3 is the verse so I used 44.

Anyone else see the white GT batting helmets last night at the GT/UGA game at Turner Field. Never seen anything like that…anyone have a pic?

Several people have mentioned this to me, but nobody has a photo, and I can’t find one. Anyone..?

I’m very shocked that the SF Giants rally cap giveaway day came and went on 4/20, and no one mentioned it.

Well, there are a few currently on Ebay…….

http://cgi.ebay.com/...

I love that “Tim Hudson sees something weird” commercial. Good way to start the day. I think it would be uncomfortable to wear that bride’s outfit for running, and the fake tux looks silly.

For all those yesterday who contributed to the discussion about the Minnesota North Stars and the Minneapolis Lakers, I re-post my comment from late last night:

Ok. I just got back from a club and read through allllllll the comments I had skipped earlier when posting.

You guys are KILLING me!!!!! Extensive talk about the North Stars and the Minneapolis Lakers?????? What a way to harsh my high. Wrath of Khan? It has NOTHING on the wrath of a Minnesotan fan scorned. I am going to have to post this again tomorrow to truly convey my angst.

I spotted a North Star shirt at the club tonight, which was bad enough. Now I gotta read this???? I also spotted a Yankees cap and was about to whap the guy–but at least it was a classic cap.

On the beer front: I asked for a Belgian beer. I got a Blue Moon. It was ok for the first three sips, then it started to taste like aspirin. I only have one drink a night, so my quest to find a beer will take a while–unless I give it up totally.

Harumph. I’m going to bed. Mad.

Thanks, MetsfanAZ for having my back. Or were you just trying to incite the crowd?

Randy Messenger of the Marlins was wearing his beak without an arch last night vs the Braves, no pics of him on the field but you can see it a bit in the link.

Re Ivan Zamorano:

When Becks moved from ManYoo to Real, he had to ditch #7 (worn by Raul) and Real wouldn’t let him do something similar, so he took 23, claiming to be a Jordan fan. Yeah, right.

Someone just sent me photos of the Ga.Tech batting helmets, and holy shit are they something to see. Not gonna share them just yet — instead, I’ll make them the lead item for tomorrow. (If anyone else has pics, feel free to forward them to me, but please don’t post them in the comments — let’s save the full impact for tomorrow.)

Another thing I noticed during the Marlins-Braves game Rick Vanden Hurk (56) last name looks like two names on his jersey.
The only name I remember with ‘Van’ in it that looked ok was Van Slyke.

Kudos to Alan Kreit. Now that is fine parenting. Teach ‘em the right way when they’re young.

Thanks….but try telling that to my wife.

I feel the Wrath of Minna.

I’m sorry if i missed this before but does anyone have a pic of the DC United jersey they are wearing as the VT tribute?

Didn’t medics in some war movie wear white helmets with a Red Cross logo on the front? They might provide an interesting comparison to the GT helmets.

Here is an example: http://www.german-he...

Here’s a sneak peek for you comments section regulars: My ESPN column tomorrow will have a new Uni Watch logo — look here.

The original idea was to come up with something that looked like a clothing tag, to connect with uniforms, clothing, etc., but then it somehow morphed into a pennant (there were a lot of corporate cooks involved in this stew, unfortunately). I don’t like it as much as the logo we use here on the blog, but I like it a LOT more than the jersey logo they’d been using for nearly three years. And they added the “Obsessive Study…” tag line, which I’m quite happy about.

Not perfect, but definitely an improvement.

That “W” in the logo looks an awful lot like the Nats curly “W” cap.

Hey Paul, in response to one of my questions, you answered the other day that the Mets were the only MLB team that had a different batting helmet paired with their caps (that blue-fading-into-black Cool-Flo model paired with the black/blue caps), but watching todays Mets - Rockies game, the Rockies also use a batting helmet that dosn’t match their cap. Their cap is black with a purple brim; their helmet (also a Cool Flo model) is purple-fading-into-black, with a purple and gold logo……

I’m going to defend the trademark lawyers in the little issue mentioned in today’s entry. (I know that everyone is shocked and surprised by that, considering I practice trademark and copyright law.)

TM law’s goal is to have marks that identify the source of the goods and services and to show the quality of those goods or services. One example is McDonald’s vs. Burger King. If you care about fast food, you know the differences between the food both companies serve.

TM law has no provisions for parody (when money is being made from that parody), so if someone takes a mark that is owned and changes it to mock it and then sells it, there is an action for trademark infringement and dilution.

Would you see Best Buy selling anti-Circuit City t-shirts? Or K Mart seeling anti-WalMart t-shirts? No - because that would be one company making money from another company’s mark. We see sports as more free - which is understandable - but it’s analagous - one company (though here it’s a school) mocking the mark of another company.

I saw the white helmets that Tech was wearing last night, and as a Tech alum I am MORTIFIED. Embarassing to say the least.

Paul, love the new logo! The colors are good, too. I like the current green but I’d rather see a two-color logo than three.

BTW, those Mizuno logos need a little explanation. They don’t actually make uniforms with the word “Mizuno” printed on them — rather, they’re templates for people to create their own teams’ logos in the style of the major leagues. Since using actual MLB and NPB team names would be copyright infringement, and since fonts and lettering styles are not copyrightable, the manufacturer will create a generic logo featuring their own name in the style of another team.

My team, for example, has Cubs-style uniforms but is called the Canards, so we have the big C with the “ANARDS” part inside it, just like the Cubs do. Arranging this was a simple matter of indicating product number “MLB-NL-3″ (or whatever) to the jersey maker; saving us the hassle of specifying white shirts, blue pinstripes, blue numbers, red borders, blue cap, red C, white border, shirt logo like so, etc., etc., thouhg teams are of course free to change any and all of those details.

Most of the uniform makers in Japan do this, including Nike (who uses “JUSTDOIT” for some of the team names), Adidas, Descente, and Zett. The “McAuliffe” Red Sox font is undergoing a serious revival these days, as are the striped stirrup socks that the Red Sox technically don’t wear anymore!

I love that “Tim Hudson sees something weird” commercial. Good way to start the day. I think it would be uncomfortable to wear that bride’s outfit for running, and the fake tux looks silly.

I was trying to stop them. I know how you feel about those teams leaving the TC and not having the courtesy to change names, especially area specific names. You’re on your own when it comes to all black unis but I’m right behind you on this one.

Minna, I’ll step up because I offered the North Stars explanation.

Sometimes, you have to give to get. Personally, the North Stars were run by a terrible man with a brutal track record in Norman Green.

Now, the fine people of the Twin Cities can enjoy excellent hockey by the Wild, and not worry about the team ever moving.

Losing the North Stars hurt, but getting a team back who is more competitive in a much better Western Conference would be better, I’d say. Yes, they don’t wear the awesome North Stars colours, but they do have a cool red jersey.

The people of Quebec City have just as much right to complain. The people of Winnipeg are still laughing over the Mess in the Desert ™. The Coyotes are just as bad as the Jets were, but cost twice as much.

I apologize for opening the old wounds, but I’d take the Wild every day of the week and twice on Sundays over the North Stars. Especially in that gorgeous new arena.

New logo for ESPN column - UPGRADE.

Looks good. Hope it’s a continual evolution into the tag look, but it’s a process. For now, looks good, and major upgrade over what they’ve got up now.

I think you are correct in your assertion that the the Texas A&M t-shirts are actionable. However, those shirts have been around for years, and the folks at UT only decided to sue after they lost the football game. It reeks of sour grapes, which I understand is not a defense to copyright infringement, but at least they are calling it what it is.

Old man Moyer was sporting his stirrups last night.

Wow, that rally-cap abortion is up to $31 on eBay. For something you could have gotten free at the park.

He destroyed the Bulls, huh? At least he didn’t throw 40 years of history out the window and create a PR nightmare to alienate the team from politicians in the area so that when he sold the team to out-of-state owners, there would be virtually no other option but to move the team. Stupid Howard Shultz.

Sorry, I’m just a bitter Sonics fan (and I’m not real hopefully that Washington state politicians will do what needs to be done to keep the team in the Seattle area)…

*sigh*

I’m an Aggie, so I’m 100% biased, but I’ll try and be objective. I’ve never been a big fan of “Saw ‘em Off” I think we should promote A&M rather than put down Texas, but that’s just me. I’ll even link to an article from the Texas newspaper. Link
In there own words the “Saw ‘em Off” logo causes confusion: “the similarities among the marks and goods are so great to create a likelihood of confusion.” So someone is going to walk into a store in College Station full of maroon shirts, buy a shirt with “saw ‘em Off” and a logo with no horns and think they are buying a Texas shirt? Someone please explain to me how that is a valid argument.
Also: “defendants have been and continue to be unjustly enriched at UT’s expense by their unauthorized use of defendant’s marks” What Texas expense? So they are saying that out of all the people that bought Texas shirts after they won the national championships a few people bought “Saw ‘em Off” shirts and Texas lost money. Please.
I’m an engineer by trade, and have no legal education. I could see where Texas has a case and a valid complaint. But using those two quotes as their main points just does not make sense to me.

Not meaning to be callous, nothing like that, but after a couple of years, when the VA Tech massacre is not at the forefront of the news like it currently is, this individual is going to sit back and wonder why he paid $200+ for a cap that is sitting in his closet gathering dust.

Mindless speculation, but I bet one of the bonus numbers for tomorrow’s column is 00. Worn by Omar Olivares for most of the teams he played on. He said it wasn’t his number, it was his initials.

The cheerleader in the background of the Essesco.com site has “Green Wave” on her uniform.
Why didn’t they choose a better team name for their home page background…like “Red Storm” or something?

Maybe because St. John’s University has “Red Storm” copyrighted.

I loved that couple running the marathon. First I saw the guy, and I was thinking, “I’m always cool with a tuxedo t-shirt.” Then I saw his bride to be, and I got it, and I started dying and cheering my ass off for them. It was definitely one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen on Marathon Monday.

What kind of undershirt is he wearing??

philadelphiaeagles.com unveiled the eagles 75th season patch and throwback unis from 1933 they will be wearing sometime this season. They are blue and yellow it appears. There are a couple of photos on the site.

Why didn’t they choose a better team name for their home page background…like “Red Storm” or something?

Maybe because St. John’s University has “Red Storm” copyrighted.

Actually, all of the St. John’s RED STORM trademarks are dead according to the USPTO (which only means they don’t have federally registered trademarks - they probably still have other trademark rights called “common law” trademark rights).

Mindless speculation, but I bet one of the bonus numbers for tomorrow’s column is 00. Worn by Omar Olivares for most of the teams he played on. He said it wasn’t his number, it was his initials.

I always intended double-zero to be part of the rundown. Not really a “bonus” number — just part of the basic roster.

Well, this is where it gets tricky, no doubt. And right now the state of the law is in flux, as last year’s Federal Trademark Dilution Act has yet to make its way through the courts.

But that’s where you start with trademark law and trademark infringement. 1) Are the two marks similar? 2) Is there a likelihood of confusion between the two marks? After last year’s FTDA, there must only be a showing of the likelihood of confusion, not actual confusion.

But you bring good issues - can anyone really be confused that one school would be selling that particular shirt in another university’s store? I’d tend to agree with you there, but other factors may be an issue, too, since I don’t know where else the shirts are sold and if it can be shown who bought those shirts.

So I understand where you’re coming from - but I don’t blame any entity for filing a Tm suit to protect their marks.

(Ok. I’m done. Back to uniforms for the rest of the day.)

Looks like a Nike Revolution. Nike doesn’t make all the shirts with distinguishing (read: fucked-up) sleeve markings i.e. dot-matrix. Some of the shirts have plain team-color sleeves.

I suppose that counts. I was thinking more along the lines of the airbrushed (for lack of a better term) two-tone Cool Flo helmets. The Reds have an all-red cap; the Mets, on the other hand, don’t have a blue-fading-into-black cap with a black NY logo for a cap design; the closest thing is their spring-training/batting practice caps.

Likewise, the Rockies have a purple-fading-into-black batting helmet with a purple and silver logo. They don’t have a corresponding cap with those colors; the closest thing is their Alternate 2 cap, an all-purple model.

Is it just me or does Ethan have one stirrup on correctly and the other backwards?

Nothing gets by this crowd, good catch.

One of the Reds players was wearing a similar undershirt last night, and it caught my eye. Is the grey/colored-sleeve undershirt a new trend?

Not really. Players have been wearing them since at least season. I know Carlos Beltran wore a blue one (royal blue sleeves/ gray body) last year when the Mets wore blue at home, since Nike didn’t make a Revolution shirt in blue.

Nicely enough, this year Nike does make a Revolution in royal blue for the Mets, as well as a what’s-become-the-norm black one.

I should have said, Nike didn’t make a dot-matrix Revolution shirt last year for the Mets in blue. They did have a plain sleeved model with blue sleeves.

Alright!, Mets in blue caps and undersleeves today. Snow white Unis though.

Sorry, here’s the Moyer link.

What kind of undershirt is he wearing??

Jamie Moyer is great. Always fun to watch in Seattle. He always chooses the home whites (and I imagine grey on the road), when he pitches. I remember the Seattle owners had a rule that the Mariners would have to wear their ‘alternate’ jerseys on Mondays, but Moyer would always fight that when he pitched.
I can recall seeing him pitch in an alternate jersey last year before he left, but I doubt it was his choice.

And how can you not like him after hearing Scott Hatteberg tell the story of facing him in Moneyball?

Teebz, I found your entry very enlightening since I didn’t know the whole circumstance behind the sale. I agree that the Wild! are great (love the red unis), but I really miss the old North Stars unis. Seeing the guy wearing the cheap-ass version last night just underscored how beautiful the logo is. It’s like when you’re with a wonderful new boy/girlfriend who is almost everything you want, but you still can’t forget your first girl/boyfriend who broke your heart.

Now, let’s hear your rationale behind the Lakers/Wolves debacle.

MetsfanAz, I knew ya had my back, even though we don’t see eye-to-eye on the black thing.

Anthony V., you were inciting! You wanted to see the Wrath of Minna. That’s ok; I’m (mostly) over it now.

Paul, I like the new logo. Glad to see that you are supporting my high school, Irondale High School. Can’t wait to see the next incarnation of the logo.

When did white become snow white? Is that the official color?

who the Mets playing today? Yankees are up against the Blue Jays, at least we know what the Yankees will wearing..Blue Jays? probably BLACK

I prefer the look the mets are sporting today. I know the pinstripes are old school, but I just don’t like them imitating the yankees. Why not just take the elements of the old NL teams? I’d love the mets to ditch the black and the pinstripes.

Picky, picky! I’m not perfect you know.

Also, Pelfrey and LoDuca are definitely wearing the old caps w/ the grey underbrim. Haven’t seen any others yet.

Minna, if you were wondering who brought up the Minn.Lakers yesterday, it was me. I had no idea the Los Angeles Lakers inherited the team from Minneapolis. Also, I’m very interested in seeing what the uni looked like.

When did white become snow white? Is that the official color?

I think the Mets themselves refer to the uniforms as “Snow Whites”. It’s probably easier to say “snow whites” than “home alternate uniform 2″.

Even worse, the Mets once had an alternate cap that was all white with a blue brim and button on the top. They called those the “Ice Cream Man” caps.

I love the throwback Eagles uniforms. They sound like they will be very nice. They’re going to wear them on Sept. 23 against Detroit.

That’s just how we refer to the Unis without pinstripes. Booker, they’re playing the Rockies. Monte, I like the pinstripes better because the drop-shadow the use works better with the pins, it helps the letters and numbers pop off the stripes. With the snow whites, I feel the dropp shadow looks messy. If there was no drop shadow on the snow whites I would like them better. But I also like tradition, so there is another reason I like the pins better.

who the Mets playing today? Yankees are up against the Blue Jays, at least we know what the Yankees will wearing..Blue Jays? probably BLACK

Sadly, you’re probably right. Since they wear the black jerseys both at home and on the road, it seems like the Jays wear their alternate jersey more than either of the regular home or away ones.

Reyes.

apparently the black ’sells’ according to Paul Godfrey and Ted Rogers. I hate that, what do they know! I’m in Toronto every once in a while, and never see a Black Jay! They’re always Blue.

I’d assume one of the bonus numbers is 1/8, for Eddie Gaedel of the St. Louis Browns. Although I can’t think of a specific reason he wore 1/8, except that he was a midget.

Broker75, here is a link to the history of the Mpls Lakers. Not sure how accurate it is, and I guess I have to come to grips with it sometime that LA stole our Lakers.

Yup. I was including the drop shadow in my ditch the black comment. I’m fairly certain that the first year the mets went w/o pinstripes (no names on the back of the jerseys either) there was no black at all in the uniform. I’m pretty sure they did it in 97 for the first go round of Jackie Robinson celebration. Having trouble finding a picture though.

Snicker. That’s funny. You made up that last bit, didn’t you, Mr. Met? It’s simply too incredible to believe.

Last word on Lakers/North Stars. While it is the uni I miss for the North Stars, it’s the name for the Lakers.

Ask and ye shall receive. Not only did the “Mets” on the front not have a drop shadow, you get a glimpse at the wonderful (tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek) Ice Cream Man caps:

Here is a throwback verision of the Uni

what does mpls stand for? Now if it was MSPL that would make sense to me (Mineapolis St. Paul Lakers)

I wish I had. The only joke here is those caps.

I was trying to post about the Gaedel number as well when the site ate my post. Other ones that I can think of are the three digit numbers worn in Japanese baseball that were recently discussed here and this.

The Mets announcers talked about those white hats last night. They said the Mets only wore them for 6 games before they pulled the ripcord…..

They really were terrible. I love those uniforms though. Assbags really snuck in the black on us.

Yeah, that. It was the Minneapolis Lakers, and that’s how we abbreviate Minneapolis.

I just got a post eaten up while trying to post a link to the history of the Mets’ unis that included that same pic of Bernard Gilkey in his ice cream man cap.

Any idea where I can get me one of those?

I’m kidding, Mr. Met and all the Mets fans. If you ever saw me wearing that hat, it would be your civic duty to whap it off my head.
