Every week or so, like clockwork, someone e-mails to ask me where they can find striped stirrups for their softball team. Or vest jerseys for their kid’s Little League team. Or caps with some sort of special embroidery. I happen to know where to find all of the above, and plenty more, but it usually means sending people to a variety of specialty suppliers.
From now on, though, I’ll probably just point people toward a site brought to my attention by reader Matt Ciccone: Essesco.com. The site itself doesn’t look like much, but start clicking around and you’ll find that they’ve basically created a compilation of athletic apparel catalogs, and it looks like they’ve got just about everything covered. You want baseball or softball unis? They’ve got a ton of options, including uniforms made by Rawlings, Reebok, Majestic, and a bunch of lesser-known brands. You want belts and stirrups? You want jackets and windbreakers? Trophies and ribbons? It’s all here.
And it’s not just baseball — they’ve also got football, basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, track, and swimming uniforms, plus warm-up suits, cheerleading outfits, and a lot more. The site’s interface leaves a lot to be desired (they need a designer, like, yesterday), but if you’re looking to outfit a team, they’ve probably got what you’re looking for — or even what you didn’t realize you were looking for.
Numerology Update: Big, big thanks to everyone who helped out with the “Who wore what number for what reason?” project. Thanks to your efforts, we now have a complete roster from 0 to 99 (including a few bonus numbers you might not have thought of). I literally couldn’t have done it without you, people — thanks a heap.
The full numerical rundown will form the basis of my next ESPN column, which should run tomorrow.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of buying uniforms and such, reader Alan Kreit recently got a pair of stirrups for his Little Leaguer son, Ethan (he says he bought them here). Unfortunately, Ethan wore his pants a bit lower for his actual game, but he still looked better than his teammates. … Wanna see something really weird? Check out the Mizuno-ized versions of MLB jerseys shown here and here (with thanks to Dwayne White). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Mariano Rivera has a Bible verse called out on his glove (with thanks to Jeff Spry for the screen shot). … Also from yesterday: Wondering why the White Sox wear black socks? You’re not alone. … More trademark litigation silliness (with thanks to Seth Horowitz). … Pretty cool Boston Marathon attire — especially if you’re gonna get married (further details here, with thanks to Uni Watch intern Vince Grzegorek). … Northeastern State has unveiled a new logo.

Those Mizuno-ized logos are freaking me out. Is there a big market in Japan for that kind of thing?
Many of the examples are instantly recognizable as being derivative of a Major League logo, while with others the relationship is not so apparent. The Reds/Mizuno logo, for example, looks very generic.

How do teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants break out of slumps if they don’t have an alternate jersey to wear? :) I know baseball players are superstitious, but it still seems silly to start making what is supposed to be an alternate jersey the regular attire. At least the NFL gets it right by limiting use of the alternate jersey… it’s too bad baseball doesn’t come up with a similar policy.

Paul: heres a number for you- back in the mid to late 90’s Ivan Zamorano (Chilean soccer player) was transfered over to Italy to play with Inter Milan. He wanted #9 but that was already taken by Ronaldo, Ivan was under contract with a sponsor (guess who) and I believe was required to wear the number 9, per his contract with them, so Ivan and Inter came up with the idea of having him wear the number 1+8 on his jersey, yep that was 1+8 because when added it truly is 9 (18 is 18, the little + was really stitched in between the 1 and 8)

Northeastern State has unveiled a new logo.
Something about that bird doesn’t look right. No way that head and those wings could be the same bird, or else the bird has a seriously long and contorted neck. Maybe it’s just supposed to be a bird’s head, with some wings behind it, but not necessarily its wings.
It looks good if you just glance at it, but the more you look at it, the more you realize that it looks like a bird head is propped up in front of a headless set of wings.
I’m guessing they did it like that so that the wings and the head would both be centered over the name, and so that they could have the bird looking to the right.

The Bible verse on Mo Rivera’s glove is very popular. For the unknowing, it is (paraphrased) “I can do all things through God, who strengthens me.” I have auto’d cards from Bryce Paup to David Segui that use that inscription. I was an umpire for 15 years, and always inscribed it under my cap. My number for all sports has always been 44, 4 for the 4, 1-3 for the 13th verse.

For all those yesterday who contributed to the discussion about the Minnesota North Stars and the Minneapolis Lakers, I re-post my comment from late last night:
Ok. I just got back from a club and read through allllllll the comments I had skipped earlier when posting.
You guys are KILLING me!!!!! Extensive talk about the North Stars and the Minneapolis Lakers?????? What a way to harsh my high. Wrath of Khan? It has NOTHING on the wrath of a Minnesotan fan scorned. I am going to have to post this again tomorrow to truly convey my angst.
I spotted a North Star shirt at the club tonight, which was bad enough. Now I gotta read this???? I also spotted a Yankees cap and was about to whap the guy–but at least it was a classic cap.
On the beer front: I asked for a Belgian beer. I got a Blue Moon. It was ok for the first three sips, then it started to taste like aspirin. I only have one drink a night, so my quest to find a beer will take a while–unless I give it up totally.

Here’s a sneak peek for you comments section regulars: My ESPN column tomorrow will have a new Uni Watch logo — look here.
The original idea was to come up with something that looked like a clothing tag, to connect with uniforms, clothing, etc., but then it somehow morphed into a pennant (there were a lot of corporate cooks involved in this stew, unfortunately). I don’t like it as much as the logo we use here on the blog, but I like it a LOT more than the jersey logo they’d been using for nearly three years. And they added the “Obsessive Study…” tag line, which I’m quite happy about.
Not perfect, but definitely an improvement.

Their cap is black with a purple brim; their helmet (also a Cool Flo model) is purple-fading-into-black, with a purple and gold logo……

I’m going to defend the trademark lawyers in the little issue mentioned in today’s entry. (I know that everyone is shocked and surprised by that, considering I practice trademark and copyright law.)
TM law’s goal is to have marks that identify the source of the goods and services and to show the quality of those goods or services. One example is McDonald’s vs. Burger King. If you care about fast food, you know the differences between the food both companies serve.
TM law has no provisions for parody (when money is being made from that parody), so if someone takes a mark that is owned and changes it to mock it and then sells it, there is an action for trademark infringement and dilution.
Would you see Best Buy selling anti-Circuit City t-shirts? Or K Mart seeling anti-WalMart t-shirts? No – because that would be one company making money from another company’s mark. We see sports as more free – which is understandable – but it’s analagous – one company (though here it’s a school) mocking the mark of another company.

Paul, love the new logo! The colors are good, too. I like the current green but I’d rather see a two-color logo than three.
BTW, those Mizuno logos need a little explanation. They don’t actually make uniforms with the word “Mizuno” printed on them — rather, they’re templates for people to create their own teams’ logos in the style of the major leagues. Since using actual MLB and NPB team names would be copyright infringement, and since fonts and lettering styles are not copyrightable, the manufacturer will create a generic logo featuring their own name in the style of another team.
My team, for example, has Cubs-style uniforms but is called the Canards, so we have the big C with the “ANARDS” part inside it, just like the Cubs do. Arranging this was a simple matter of indicating product number “MLB-NL-3″ (or whatever) to the jersey maker; saving us the hassle of specifying white shirts, blue pinstripes, blue numbers, red borders, blue cap, red C, white border, shirt logo like so, etc., etc., thouhg teams are of course free to change any and all of those details.
Most of the uniform makers in Japan do this, including Nike (who uses “JUSTDOIT” for some of the team names), Adidas, Descente, and Zett. The “McAuliffe” Red Sox font is undergoing a serious revival these days, as are the striped stirrup socks that the Red Sox technically don’t wear anymore!

Minna, I’ll step up because I offered the North Stars explanation.
Sometimes, you have to give to get. Personally, the North Stars were run by a terrible man with a brutal track record in Norman Green.
Now, the fine people of the Twin Cities can enjoy excellent hockey by the Wild, and not worry about the team ever moving.
Losing the North Stars hurt, but getting a team back who is more competitive in a much better Western Conference would be better, I’d say. Yes, they don’t wear the awesome North Stars colours, but they do have a cool red jersey.
The people of Quebec City have just as much right to complain. The people of Winnipeg are still laughing over the Mess in the Desert (TM). The Coyotes are just as bad as the Jets were, but cost twice as much.
I apologize for opening the old wounds, but I’d take the Wild every day of the week and twice on Sundays over the North Stars. Especially in that gorgeous new arena.

In there own words the “Saw ‘em Off” logo causes confusion: “the similarities among the marks and goods are so great to create a likelihood of confusion.” So someone is going to walk into a store in College Station full of maroon shirts, buy a shirt with “saw ‘em Off” and a logo with no horns and think they are buying a Texas shirt? Someone please explain to me how that is a valid argument.
Also: “defendants have been and continue to be unjustly enriched at UT’s expense by their unauthorized use of defendant’s marks” What Texas expense? So they are saying that out of all the people that bought Texas shirts after they won the national championships a few people bought “Saw ‘em Off” shirts and Texas lost money. Please.
I’m an engineer by trade, and have no legal education. I could see where Texas has a case and a valid complaint. But using those two quotes as their main points just does not make sense to me.

Well, this is where it gets tricky, no doubt. And right now the state of the law is in flux, as last year’s Federal Trademark Dilution Act has yet to make its way through the courts.
But that’s where you start with trademark law and trademark infringement. 1) Are the two marks similar? 2) Is there a likelihood of confusion between the two marks? After last year’s FTDA, there must only be a showing of the likelihood of confusion, not actual confusion.
But you bring good issues – can anyone really be confused that one school would be selling that particular shirt in another university’s store? I’d tend to agree with you there, but other factors may be an issue, too, since I don’t know where else the shirts are sold and if it can be shown who bought those shirts.
So I understand where you’re coming from – but I don’t blame any entity for filing a Tm suit to protect their marks.

Likewise, the Rockies have a purple-fading-into-black batting helmet with a purple and silver logo. They don’t have a corresponding cap with those colors; the closest thing is their Alternate 2 cap, an all-purple model.

Jamie Moyer is great. Always fun to watch in Seattle. He always chooses the home whites (and I imagine grey on the road), when he pitches. I remember the Seattle owners had a rule that the Mariners would have to wear their ‘alternate’ jerseys on Mondays, but Moyer would always fight that when he pitched.
I can recall seeing him pitch in an alternate jersey last year before he left, but I doubt it was his choice.
And how can you not like him after hearing Scott Hatteberg tell the story of facing him in Moneyball?

Teebz, I found your entry very enlightening since I didn’t know the whole circumstance behind the sale. I agree that the Wild! are great (love the red unis), but I really miss the old North Stars unis. Seeing the guy wearing the cheap-ass version last night just underscored how beautiful the logo is. It’s like when you’re with a wonderful new boy/girlfriend who is almost everything you want, but you still can’t forget your first girl/boyfriend who broke your heart.
Now, let’s hear your rationale behind the Lakers/Wolves debacle.
MetsfanAz, I knew ya had my back, even though we don’t see eye-to-eye on the black thing.

I think the Mets themselves refer to the uniforms as “Snow Whites”. It’s probably easier to say “snow whites” than “home alternate uniform 2″.
Even worse, the Mets once had an alternate cap that was all white with a blue brim and button on the top. They called those the “Ice Cream Man” caps.

That’s just how we refer to the Unis without pinstripes. Booker, they’re playing the Rockies. Monte, I like the pinstripes better because the drop-shadow the use works better with the pins, it helps the letters and numbers pop off the stripes. With the snow whites, I feel the dropp shadow looks messy. If there was no drop shadow on the snow whites I would like them better. But I also like tradition, so there is another reason I like the pins better.

I was watching the Brewers game last night, and the Crew’s TV announcers were talking about their Alts. THey said that they are a very supersticious (sp?) team and that so far this year they are 7-1 (now 8-1) in the blue tops. But then they went on to say that it is always the starting pitchers decision what colors they are wearing.. and only sometimes the equiptment manager. Is this true? I also loved the white Mets caps!
And a for why Kashiwada had #18 — Valentine chose it for him. In Japan, the “ace” pitcher traditionally gets #18 because of some kabuki-related thing where some actor’s signature line was associated with the number 18. (For some reason, the word “ohako”, meaning one’s specialty, is often written with the characters for “#18″. I would have to look up why this is.) So Bobby V. wanted to give their young Japanese import a little special recognition — he’s never get that number in Japan, and indeed when he returned and joined the Yomiuri Giants (Satan’s own spawn, they are), he had the number 49, which, though innocuous and relief-pitcher-like in the US, makes Japanese people think of death (”4″ is homonymous with “death”) and pain (same with “9″).
And Minna, if you want a good Belgian beer, look around for Chimay — not cheap (nearly $3.50 a bottle out here!) but well worth it!

its traditional in soccer for the home team to wear white socks. my high school team would have the whole red look at away games. and for those that don’t know, the two teams can’t wear the same colored socks in a game because the contrasting colors help the referee know which team hit the ball out of bounds.

Anyway, the gist was that while the white socks at home might be true of other teams, Liverpool has worn all red since 1964. From wikipedia (but with the documentation to back it up too):
In 1964, then Liverpool manager Bill Shankly decided to send the team out in all red for the first time against Anderlecht, as Ian St. John recalled in his autobiography:
“ He thought the colour scheme would carry psychological impact — red for danger, red for power. He came into the dressing room one day and threw a pair of red shorts to Ronnie Yeats. “Get into those shorts and let’s see how you look,†he said. “Christ, Ronnie, you look awesome, terrifying. You look 7ft tall.†“Why not go the whole hog, boss?†I suggested. “Why not wear red socks? Let’s go out all in red.†Shankly approved and an iconic kit was born.[33]

Matthew, I had no idea that Chimay’s profits went to charity! Yet another reason to drink it! (Though I admit that the main reason is the taste, and second is the fact that my girlfriend dislikes it, so I can keep several bottles in the house without the fear of her drinking them all as she would with other beer. The charity thing is s distant third.)
Forty-four is indeed another number disliked by Japanese players and often reserved for foreign imports. Same for 4 (often given to the imported power hitter) and 42 (which foreign players also like because they get to experience what Jackie Robinson experienced when they come here, despite 60 years of enlightened history having passed back home).

My 2000 WS cap is the all black, becasue that was all i could find out here. Never worn because my head did a Barry Bonds on me. Need to get some autographs on that baby. But my most prized possession is my 1991, blue buttoned, no MLB logo, all blue, Mets cap. The NY is so faded and the shape is horrible and the black thread pokes me sometimes but I am never letting that one go. Wow, good catch. Looks like they’ve been wearing it consistently on the road, but not at home. This is presumably because they wear a vest at home, and the players wears all sorts of different green undershirts (short-sleeved, long-sleeved, loose-fit, tight-fit, Nike-poxed, crew-collared, mock-turtle, etc.), so it’s hard to get everyone to wear the patch.
In fact, I just checked their official uni specs and was surprised to see that the patch is only supposed to be worn with the road and alt-home (i.e., solid-green) jerseys — NOT with the standard home vest. I hadn’t noticed that little detail until now.
So they’ve got an anniversary patch, but they’ve specifically designated that it NOT be worn with their basic home uniform. Man, this franchise truly can’t do anything right….

Gotta disagree about the Royals’ gray hats — I thought the head-to-toe gray was a little too much. Bad things happen when the Royals stray from this — their black hat was pretty ugly too. I need to pick up one of the new shrink-resistant ones as my gigantic melon has outgrown about 6 fitted Royals hats through the years.
I agree with your last statement too. It’s not that I don’t own any other MLB hats; I used to live in Chicago and Arizona so if you dig deep enough in my closet you’ll find Cubs and D’Backs hats. But there’s only one team that’s YOUR team (at least that’s how it should be), and that’s the ONLY hat you should wear.

My two cents: it’s OK to wear a hat of your favorite team and any cool throwback hat, on the condition that they do not represent a currently hated team.
For example, in my book:
Yankees: yes. My favorite team.
Red Red Sox hat with the blue brim: NO!
Any Mets hat: No, but I do support the Ditch the Black campaign.
NY Giants or Brooklyn Dodgers: probably, considering that those teams were never in New York in my lifetime. Nice hats, even though the Mets are supposed to wear a blue Giants hat.
Brewers ball-in-glove, red Twins TC cap, Expos: yes, yes, and yes. Love those hats.
Seattle Pilots: I’m not too crazy about logos on the brim. I much prefer the Mariners simple yellow S on blue.
Mustard chocolate Padres: (reaching for barf bag)

From Gene W. on ESPN (listing his picks for mocking the draft).:
With the No. 8 selection, I mock … the onstage photo op.
It takes about a nanosecond for the NFL to start the marketing process of a first-round pick. Player gets call from team … player leaves Green Room for stage … player is handed NFL-approved baseball cap … player must wear $24.99 cap with $3,499 tailored Armani suit … player looks like idiot; player’s fashion consultant weeps in fitting room … player shakes hands with Goodell and helps hold up NFL-approved jersey with, sigh, No. 1 number. That’s why I wish Joe Thomas would have come to the draft. He could have worn a fishing bucket hat with lures stuck through the sides.
I am cut-and-pasting because my posts with ESPN links don’t go through.

Cool discussion on the caps of other teams thing. Good point by Mike Engle there, I can almost accept wearing a cool throwback, e.g. Expos, Brewers, etc.
One other thing that I thought of, has anyone run into a siutation where they play for or their kids play for a team named after a hated rival? I’m sure this has come up with Little League usually naming their teams after MLB teams. Last fall, my son’s first year of T-ball he played for the “Cardinals”. Not a hated rival but the timing couldn’t have been worse. I feel personally responsible for the early exit from last year’s playoffs. I didn’t wear the cap just a generic red shirt and I think that was bad enough.

I had to play for the hated Cardinals as a Little Leaguer, too!
It’s too bad abot those gray hats disappearing so quickly. I really liked them, though they look bizarre when the team’s jersey has pinstripes but the hat doesn’t, like with the Pirates.
And Minna, this $3.50 for Chimay is in the lowest priced stores! In a restaurant it would be Y900, or over seven dollars. Taxes on alcohol (and cigarettes) are low here, but the high euro is making imports really expensive. Japan is pretty bizarre — in the vending machines near me, a 12-ounce can of Coke is Y120 ($1.00), which feels like an outrage, but a reinforced aluminum can of hot tea is the same price, as is generic beer, and both of those feel like bargains. I think if they started selling hot drinks in cans in the US, they could charge a dollar apiece easily.
