For last Thursday’s entry about team captains, I put a photo of Captain Kirk at the top of the page. It now occurs to me that the original Star Trek series, which I watched a lot of as a kid (insert all the usual geek clichés here), had a very formative effect on my uni-watching predilections, because I was pretty obsessed with how the various characters’ Starfleet ranks were indicated by the gold braid on their sleeve cuffs (sort of like this). A quick recap:
• Kirk was a captain, so he had two solid braids with a dotted braid in between. Occasionally they dressed him in that green tunic-y thing (I believe because William Shatner had put on too much weight to look good in the standard uniform top), and it always bugged me that the tunic sometimes had the standard sleeve braids and at other times mimicked the sleeve braiding on the shoulders with the sleeves left blank.
• Commanders, like Spock, wore two solid gold braids.
• Lieutenant commanders, like Scottie, had one solid braid and one dotted.
• Lieutenants, like Sulu and Uhura, had one solid gold braid.
• Ensigns, like Chekov, had plain, unadorned sleeves, which always struck me as a bit of a gyp. Like, shouldn’t they get a single dotted braid or something?
• The occasional appearance of a Commodore, like Stocker or Decker, was marked by two gold braids with some sort of metallic foil in between.
There’s more, like all the different badges and such, but I never got into that stuff as much — then, as now, I was always more interested in the sleeve stripes. (Those who really wanna dork out on this stuff should look here, and there’s a doozy of a PDF file here.)
Much later, in the early 1990s — several years before I came up with the idea for Uni Watch — I got into the great 1960s TV series The Prisoner, and I noticed an ongoing discrepancy in the white piping on Patrick McGoohan’s signature black jacket. Sometimes the piping ran straight through the notch between the lapel and the collar (as seen here, here, here, and here), but at other times there was a small break in the piping (here, here, here, and here). Sometimes these two styles appeared within the same episode — or even the same scene. Bizarre. The people who produce The Simpsons must have noticed too, because they used both styles in this frame.
Obviously, it’s completely shocking that I was watching all this non-sports programming, but think of this as Uni Watch in its embryonic stages. I assure you that I was obsessing about stirrups and sleeve lengths and all the usual minutiae the whole time anyway.
Meanwhile, in actual sports news…: I’m trying to put the finishing touches on the roster of players who’ve worn particular uni numbers for particular reasons. As you’ll recall, I’m trying to get at least one example for each number from 0 through 99 — a tall order, it turns out. Here’s what I’m missing: 35, 48, 54, 59, 61, 63, 64, 67, 78, 82, and 86. (Update: Thanks to a slew of extremely helpful readers, all I’m missing now is 64 and 78.)
If you know of a player who’s worn any of these numbers for a specific reason, please get in touch as soon as possible.

Not to show my geekiness too much. But I was always interested in the different color uniform tops for the crew of the Enterprise. Blue for Science/medical, Red for communications/Engineering/Security. Gold for command/navigation etc.
On another note, it was just announced that DC United will, indeed, honor VT by wearing special maroon jerseys with the VT logo this Saturday. The game worn jerseys will then be actioned off to benefit the Hokie fund. Link here http://dcunited.mlsn...

It is not a super interesting reason, but this article quotes Tony Esposito as requesting #35 because he wanted “something different – something to make me stand out and for people to notice.” At the time, it was a nontraditional number for a hockey goalie to wear.

I never really paid attention to the sleeve stripes on the uniforms. It pretty much mimics the Navy’s officer insignia though. I’ve always preferred TNG over TOS though.
I miss Bloom County. I have a great Billy and the Boingers Bootleg Tour t-shirt that I never wear because I can’t replace it.

i was alway under the impression that it was because as a youth player in italy he wore 8. and the reason he wore 8 as a youth was because current phoenix head coach mike d’antoni was his favorite player, and that was his jersey number.

With all due respect Paul as I’m sure the Star Trek topic was well researched and all ready to go, the Canucks fashion show should have made some mention, at least. Also, it is another example of just how clueless Gary Bettman and his adminastraiton is to not encourage throwbacks as a 3rd next year.

From the number of alternates in the crowd last night at GM Place, it would be foolish for the new ownership group not to consider the alternate as a possibility.
Gary Bettman is eliminating the third jersey due to the fact that 30 teams will have new uniforms next season. In terms of marketing, Bettman wants the new jersey designs to be the feature, not some alternate being used as a cash grab.
After all, it worked for the Minnesota Wild. They’re keeping the red jerseys, and ditching the green. The prevailing rumour out of Edmonton is that they will use their third jersey design as their home jersey as well.

Paul, if you’re gonna start with the original Star Trek, you need to carry on through the uniform re-designs as well. Star Trek: The Next Generation wore little gold buttons on their collars to designate rank. I was never a follower of the Star Trek TV shows, but I’ve seen the movies. Deep Space Nine and Enterprise also have different uniform configurations from what I’ve seen, although DS9 was similar to the Next Generation.

Here are my problems with the Northeast Eagles (yellow team) uniforms.
First of all, yellow? It looks absolutely horrible. I didn’t even know you could find yellow vests anywhere. 2nd, I’m not opposed to useless trim like you guys are, but the white trim with grey pants is not a good match.
Third, I have the pet peeve that with few exceptions, when you’re on the road, you’re jersey should have the name of the city/school. If you look at the majors, it’s common practice with a few exceptions. “Eagles” doesn’t tell your opponents where you’re from…or who you are.
Then, if you look at the 2nd photo, you’ll notice that they decide to rock a white hat….with gray pants. That puts the checklist at white hat, yellow jersey, gray pants, blue socks. If you’re going to spring for the white hat, you need a different hat to go with the road gray’s.
I can’t tell the font on the jerseys, but it seems like a Pirates-esque font. Anyways, I thought you guys would get a kick out of these beauties, and I welcome your opinions.

When Josh Towers (currently a Blue Jay) came up with the Orioles in 2001, he specifically requested number 35 — recently vacated by Mike Mussina’s departure. It was basically all about saying “I’m going to be just as valuable as that guy was.” The anecdote always stuck in my mind because Towers started out on a tear — for awhile it looked like he might actually do it.

He wears 7 with the Jays, which to me makes the whole 35 thing even more interesting. It really wasn’t about Towers as much as it was about Towers making a point with the number. Gotta love that.

In response to number 61: What are you so bitter about? You do not need to read the blog and if you think it ought to be differently done please start your own and control it as you wish.
On a different note I will tell you what I am bitter about: the logos of the major schools in my state have each been changed in recent years for marketing purposes, each for the worse. I cannot stand the santitized dullness that marketing majors have been foisting upon us lately. Please try a little imagination and taste.
Oh and by the way I live in Oregon so you know the schools that I am talking about.

re: Rob Mackowiak wearing #59. He is a Southsider, and I think I do remember hearing the Pirate announcers reported that he was wearing #59 as a tribute to the 1959 AL Champion Chisox. I can’t find proof, though.
Interestingly, in his last year with the Pirates, Mackowiak switched from #59 to #3. Then last year, Buccos reserve OF Nate McLouth wore #59, but this year, he switched to — you guessed it — #3.

Pardon me while I geek out on everyone, but what a wonderful convergence of two of my passions in this post — uniforms and Star Trek.
My favorite Trek uniforms are the ones from the movies Star Trek II to Star Trek VII, which had the virtue of being more, well, uniform. All officers wore maroon jackets and the department colors were more subtle, on a shoulder sash, undershirt collars and piping on the pants. Department colors were changed to white, gold, olive green, gray and red.
The Next Generation brought back some of the color sensibilities of the Original Series, but turned one convention on its ear by putting command officers in red. As you may remember, the “red shirts” from the Original Series were security or engineering guys. With the exception of Scotty, their main purpose was mainly to be fodder for aliens to kill.
I’ve probably bored some of you already, so I’ll return you to your scheduled program.
P.S. Have I missed the details of the May 12 UniWatch convocation? I’m planning on being there!

When Rickey Henderson started his illustrious career, his first number was 35. He was awesome with the number 35. I wanted to wear 35, because two of my favorite A’s wore it, Henderson and Vida Blue.
When Henderson was traded to the yankees, he took the number 24, because Willie Mays was his hero. I always thought it was lame, because Henderson was Henderson and 35 was his number. When Rickey returned to the A’s, he kept the number 24. Which brings me to this …

Hey Paul, I sent an email to that link, but i have no idea if it’s gonna make it to you, cuz i’ve never sent anything in before. But I submitted that Benoit Pouliot, a prospect for the Minnesota Wild, wore #67 during his brief callup this season, he also wore #67 during his time in junior hockey at Sudbury. He wears #67 as a tribute to his two favorite players, Mario Lemieux(66) and Jaromir Jagr(68) because it’s right in between their numbers.

(It was the first legit confirmation that the Caps would be going back to the old colors). The Wizards are still owned by Abe Polin (Ted Leonsis’ Lincoln Holdings has majority of the Caps and Mystics) so what happens with the Caps/Mystics won’t necessarily have an impact on the Wiz…is my guess.
My guess/hope with the Caps redesign is that the logo w/ the Capitol dome stays the same…and possiby the bronze they’re using remains an accent color (the same way the Nationals use Gold along with their Red White and blue.) I just hope they’re simple and clean…and not over designed in the armpit/side panel area.

In nascar when a team selects a number they generally hold onto it. When Jeff Gordon broke into Nascar, Hendrick’s top team was the #5 Tide car driven by Ricky Rudd. Rudd eventually left Hendrick and took the Tide sponsor with him, but the number remains with the team, so Rudd was driving a #10 Tide car.

Update on Robert Svehla and number 67. After a quick Google search, I can confirm that he chose the number 67 when he was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs because his usual number 24 was taken by Bryan McCabe. Svehla acknowledged that he knew ‘67 was the last year the Leafs won the Cup, but in the only direct quote I could find, he claimed to like “high numbers” and did not mention the 1967 connection to his choice of 67.

Re: #64 — According to this page (scroll all the way down), Dwight Gooden wore #64 in spring training in 1993 because that was the number he had been assigned at his first ST in 1984, and he was hoping his ‘84 self would rub off, apparently. That’s a really flimsy connection, IMHO, but if you don’t find anything better you might want to use it.

In ‘82 and ‘83 the A’s and Giants both had uni-related commercials. The plot of the A’s commercial was how they would choose the color of their jerseys based on scientific data. The Giants’ one was based on Frank Robinson choosing the new design.
Both were funny.

I don’t have a screen shot, but has anyone noticed that Charlie Sheen’s Ricky Vaughan character is wearing two different uniforms in his commercial for an HDTV? Actual movie footage shows Sheen in the Indians home uniforms without side or shoulder striping. “Current” clips of him (while he’s talking to the camera) in the same ad show him wearing navy and red side and shoulder stripes. Now, I’ve always felt since they heavily weigh the Oakland years that they should retire 35 for Vida Blue since he was huge for the A’s in the 70’s dynasty years.
That would leave 24 open for Rickey.
However, I’ve heard rumblings that they may be doing something for Rickey this year, and it oughta be noted that noone has #35 for the A’s right now, but Shannon Stewart is wearing 24.
I imagine they’ll leave it up to Rickey to choose.
I’m hoping they do a Yankees/Berra/Dickey and retire 34 a second time for Dave Stewart soon, too.

Here at the University at Buffalo we also have the Bulls as our mascot. UB’s women’s team originally went by the nickname Lady Blues during the mid-70s but changed to the Royals (after the school colors) in 1977 as a result of a student contest conducted in the student newspaper. The original logo was a crown with the initials UB incorporated into the points, and in 1978-79, the script Royals was substituted for the crown. In the summer of 1997, the women’s teams changed to the Bulls to unite the men’s and women’s athletic programs.

Does anyone remember the A’s having red in their uniforms during sometime in the early ’80’s?Maybe ‘81, ‘82 or ‘83? It’s not in the Dressed to the Nines database but I could swear they wore red and yellow trim on their unis sometime in that time frame.
You may be thinking of the time they wore Oakland Oaks throwback uniforms. I think it was ‘97.
Or maybe you saw it on a baseball card. Remember when Topps would airbrush new uniforms on traded players?

The USC Women’s teams are the Women of Troy. Almost makes violets sound like a good nickname.
My undergrad college’s (Ithaca) teams were/are nicknamed the Bombers. Some bright bulbs on the faculty while I was there wanted to drop the nickname since it was too violent, and change to the Big Blue. As Cornell (the Big Red) was on the other side of town, this smacked of a major-league inferiority complex. A student humor magazine recemmended changing the name to the Daisies instead.
Sorry for the long, almost pointless story. The Fighting Violets reminded me of it.

On a different note I will tell you what I am bitter about: the logos of the major schools in my state have each been changed in recent years for marketing purposes, each for the worse. I cannot stand the santitized dullness that marketing majors have been foisting upon us lately. Please try a little imagination and taste.
Oh and by the way I live in Oregon so you know the schools that I am talking about.

I disagree about the O. It was sort of neat when it came out but the reason the University changed logos was that they could not sell any gear with the Duck outside of Portland and Eugene. Before the Toronto Raptors were born, there was speculation that the team was gonna be called the Toronto Great Lakers, pretty cool cause the city is surrounded by the Great Lakes. But Jurassic Park was huge back in the day they were born, so they went with ‘the times’, instead of ‘the meaning’ behind the nickname.

The best team name out of all comes from minor hokcey: the Macon Whoopee.
However, the NHL has lots.
- the Ottawa Senators play in Canada’s capital, which houses the Canadian Senate.
- the Washington Capitals play in America’s capital, not to mention they play just down from the Capitol building.
- the Dallas Stars are a reference to the Lone Star State.
- the Edmonton Oilers refer to the vast oilfields in northern Alberta.
- the Atlanta Thrashers honour Georgia’s state bird, the brown thrasher.

The jacket-and-turtleneck uniforms from the TOS films II-VI were the best, hands-down.
It is odd how Trek fans regard these the same way we sports-uni fans on this board regard the sartorial expressions of our favorite teams. Hmm…

Around 1988 the Hofstra Pride Club was founded. All of the university’s sports teams began wearing circular patches on their uniforms bearing the school’s crest, with the words “HOFSTRA PRIDE” circumscribed. Even though the nickname was “Flying Dutchmen,” these ubiquitous patches gave a lot of people the idea that the teams were called Hofstra Pride. Rather than have to constantly keep explaining the discrepancy, the school probably figured it might as well go all the way, and officially changed the nickname to Pride a few years ago.
Hofstra has always had the rampant lions as part of its school crest, and had lion and lioness mascots when I was there in the late ’80s-early ’90s. I don’t know if this had anything to do with the naming of the Pride Club in 1988, but that’s supposedly the basis for the nickname now.

Some say that it was always Green’s intention to move the Minnesota franchise to Texas where Dallas was willing to pay whatever it took to bring an NHL franchise to the state of Texas. Removing the word “North” from the name, but leaving the “Stars” looked a little suspicious. In 1995, the Stars were sold to Texas billionaire Tom Hicks in what would be Green’s last transaction as the owner of the team.

This may be old news, but it finally came to my attention. What is up with the large brim caps worn by the Yankee pitcher last night and the Oakland pitcher? I much prefer the Andy Pettitte look, if hiding/intimidation is the goal.

It probably doesn’t matter though cause the Grizz won’t last too much longer in Memphis anyway. If they had picked a more apropiate name, they probably wouldn’t have sucked so much and people might have actually gone to the games.

Green Bay Packers – Named Packers for Green Bays Packaging company right on the bank of the Fox river.
Milwaukee Bucks – Named Bucks for the over abundance of deer in Wisconsin and the great hunting of Whitetails.
Milwaukee Brewers – Named obviously for Milwaukee’s Miller Brewing Company (which in my opinion makes one hell of a great beer)

The Brewers aren’t named after Miller despite their current stadium and logo. There were many breweries in Milwaukee at the turn of the century–the Milwaukee Brewers debuted in 1901 and last all of one season. When they reappeared in the sixites, the biggest beer in the city of Miller, Pabst, and Blatz was actually Schlitz (the beer that made Milwaukee famous).
Indeed, Wisconsin does have the best nicknames–both Packers and Brewers are named after labor reflecting their fan base and sensibility.

I wear (and when I say wear, I mean choose when creating myself in videogames) #58, because two of my favorite Red Wings are Nicklas Lidstrom (5) and Igor Larionov (8). Patr Klima wore 85, so I picked 58 instead.
I just found out that Dustin Moselely wears 58 for the LAAOFAINC, so he is now my new favorite non-Tiger.
Anyway, I’d like to know who you have for #58.

The origin of the New York Rangers nickname is pretty clever. The President of Madison Square Garden at the time of the team’s creation (1926-27) was G.L. ‘Tex’ Rickard. Sportswriters began calling the team “Tex’s Rangers,” and the name stuck.

personally my favorite college non-threatening mascot is the Heidelberg Student Princes in Tiffin, OH.
in Norwalk, OH their high school is the Truckers. there is history behind this, but how intimidating is that?

The worst has to be the Memphis Grizzlies…if they changed the name to blue suede shoes when they moved from vancuver even that would have been better.
I say No way. Grizzlies is a cool name – they had a great original logo (the new one is ok) and the name can be shortened to Griz. I think the word GRIZZLIES looks cool stitched on a jersey.
- it doesn’t fit Memphis necessarily but are there Tigers roaming Detroit sidewalks? It’s better than the singular names Magic, Heat, Jazz, etc.
It would be weird if they changed it now – 7 yrs after the move.
When the Grizzlies were first moving to Memphis and FedEx was getting the naming rights to the arena, they proposed renaming the team the Express…Which was promptly (and rightly) shot down by the league. FedEx is famous for trying to pimp their brand for free.

Apologies if this has been brought up before, but check out the left sleeve cuff of Brian Bruney’s (NYY reliever) road jersey. It looks longer than the right sleeve, with a broad navy stripe above the standard sleeve-cuff striping.

My name is Ryan, I work for the grounds crew for the Rochester Red Wings(AAA Baseball affiliate with the Twins, Rochester New York). In early April i would like to point out that the entire Ottawa Lynx team wears high red socks during road games, and i know how uni-watch as well as myself support the cause. Whats everyones opinion on flat brimmed caps? Also, did you catch the Red Wings take on the Twins “TC” logo? (Rochester is the Flower and Flour City) WE changed the T to an F. It Looks Sharp! Maybe you could do a story on how Minor league teams adapt their affiliates logos?
All that is just some food for thought.

Hey Paul, in response to one of my questions, you answered the other day that the Mets were the only MLB team that had a different batting helmet (that blue-fading-into-black Cool-Flo model paired with the black/blue caps), but watching todays Mets – Rockies game, the Rockies also use a batting helmet that dosn’t match their cap. Their cap is black with a purple brim; their helmet (also a Cool Flo model) is purple-fading-into-black, with a purple and gold logo……

Ha-ha-ha-ha! I just saw the T-Mobile commercial with Dwyane Wade and Charles Barkley. Sir Charles is showing highlights from his glory days and invites Wade to agree that his play is indeed impressive. Instead, Wade says what is really impressive is how Sir Charles squeezed into those “little shorts … sexy!”

Ok. I just got back from a club and read through allllllll the comments I had skipped earlier when posting.
You guys are KILLING me!!!!! Extensive talk about the North Stars and the Minneapolis Lakers?????? What a way to harsh my high. Wrath of Khan? It has NOTHING on the wrath of a Minnesotan fan scorned. I am going to have to post this again tomorrow to truly convey my angst.
I spotted a North Star shirt at the club tonight, which was bad enough. Now I gotta read this???? I also spotted a Yankees cap and was about to whap the guy–but at least it was a classic cap.
On the beer front: I asked for a Belgian beer. I got a Blue Moon. It was ok for the first three sips, then it started to taste like aspirin. I only have one drink a night, so my quest to find a beer will take a while–unless I give it up totally.
Harumph. I’m going to bed. Mad.
