A really interesting subject came up in yesterday’s comments section: uniform cameos, meaning players who made very brief and easily overlooked appearances with a given team. It’s a great topic, and one that really shows the power of a uniform. Take Pete Rose, for example: It’s one thing to remember that he briefly played with the Expos in 1984, but actually seeing him in a Montreal uniform is pretty jarring. Uni cameos also serve as useful refresher courses in sports history — did you remember, for example, that Mike Piazza was a Marlin for about 10 minutes in 1998, or that Harmon Killebrew finished his career with a forgettable season in Kansas City? I confess that I had no idea Fergie Jenkins once wore a Phillies uni. And even if you know that Randy Johnson came up with the Expos, it’s still a bit of a mind-fuck to see him wearing Montreal threads.
The uni cameo is a flexible concept, so I want to narrow it down a bit. Like, okay, so Todd Zeile played 34 games with the Expos, but so what? The guy played for a gazillion different teams, so it doesn’t seem unusual to see him in any particular uniform. But seeing Franco Harris as a Seahawk, Curt Schilling as an Astro, Brett Favre as a Falcon, or Roger Maris as an Indian are all sort of hard for me to wrap my brain around. And of course certain player/uni pairings will just never compute, no matter how hard I stare at the photographic evidence.
To a certain extent, the question of what qualifies as a uni cameo is a function of personal perspective. The Pete Rose and Randy Johnson cases, for example, might not seem so unusual to someone who grew up in Montreal. Similarly, the sight of Willie Mays in a Mets uni seems perfectly normal to me, since I was a very enthusiastic eight- and nine-year-old Mets fan during Willie’s short tenure with the team. Also, it seems to me that more recent uni cameos (like, say, Armando Benitez as a Yankee) don’t pack as much of a punch, for three primary reasons: (1) Recent examples are fresher in our memories, so they don’t have as much of a surprise factor; (2) modern media coverage ensures that we’ll see much more of a player in a given uniform today than we would have 10 or 15 years ago, further diluting the impact; and (3) players move around so much these days that a cameo stint with a team doesn’t look as weird as it once did — nobody stays in one place long enough to establish a base-level look in the first place.
But that still leaves us plenty of fertile ground. In fact, I like this topic so much that I’m probably going to devote an ESPN column to this in the near future. So let’s compile as big a list as possible — send suggestions, links, and so on this-a-way. Big thanks in advance to all contributors, and bonus thanks to those who got the ball rolling yesterday.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Great tidbit from a reader who prefers not to be named: “Rob Cucuzza, the Yankees’ equipment manager, said that Gary Sheffield was very particular about his uniform, including some bizarre alterations. For example, he said Sheffield ‘would ask for 1/16th of an inch to be taken off his sleeve, but not from the bottom of the sleeve.’ Instead, Sheffield would ask to have the sleeve taken off his jersey, get the 1/16th of an inch taken from the top of the sleeve, and then have the sleeve re-attached. When you think about it, maybe it makes a little sense to give more room at the top of the shoulder, but I’ve never heard of anything like that.” … More on Carlos Guillen and his inside-out pockets: According to the second item on this page, the fine that Guillen was threatened with was $1000. And then there’s this: “Guillen usually wears one pocket out, either the left or right, ‘depending on who’s pitching.’ He called it a superstition and doesn’t see the point of having to change.” (With thanks to longtime Uni Watch Motor City bureau chief Doug Kalemba.) … Mark Liyeos notes that all the cold weather has brought a welcome resurgence of home plate umps wearing blazers. … You know your mesh jersey is too see-through when you can make out the undershirt logo through the jersey (as spotted by Jeremy Brahm). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: For the second time in four months, I forgot that the 1983 Cowboys were not the only NFL team whose captains wore “C” designations. There’s at least one other example: the 1994 Patriots. … Turns out the President isn’t the only one who gets free swag. “It’s from the National Book Festival Author’s breakfast, whatever the hell that is,” writes Marcus Ramsey. “Here’s the thing: That looks like a Clippers jersey, but Baron Davis plays for Golden State and Diana Taurasi plays for Phoenix.” … Really interesting link here describing how baseball caps are made (with thanks to David Soline).

Not sure if it was in yesterday’s comments, but one immediately springs to mind as a New Yorker: Patrick Ewing with the Magic. Actually, almost all of these, although Joe Montana with the Chiefs doesn’t bug me so much, since he did lead them to the playoffs. Rice as 80 on the Seahawks was really weird.
One more that’s just bizarre: Joe Morgan as an A.

There’s a good old time one: Ty Cobb as a Indian. (First row, third from right)
It was a benefit game for Addie Joss’ widow, and Ty forgot his uniform. Considering his reputation, it’s amazing that they let him borrow one.

I’m sure many other colleges are doing some sort of tribute, but I just noticed that Penn State is selling maroon and orange Penn State shirts that students are planning to wear to the spring blue/white game tomorrow. They plan to spell out “VT” in the student section, where they usually spell out a big blue and white “S”.

I’m actually surprised Joe didn’t beat me to it, but what be even more surprising than seeing Kurt Schilling in an Astros uni, is seeing him in this, his rookie O’s uni.
Of course, every O’s fan remembers the infamous Glenn Davis trade, which sent Schilling, along with Steve Finley and Pete Harnisch to the Astros for an aging, oft-injured Glenn Davis, who never got back to form after joining the O’s and drifted into obscurity while the other 3 went on to become all-stars.

He will create the figure in the away jersey rather than the figure’s original introduction in a home uniform. This from the fascinating Guy LaFleur page referenced above:
There was high drama over which number Lafleur should wear with Montreal. Canadiens’ management suggested he wear Jean Beliveau’s retired Number 4, positioning himself as the next superstar of the Canadiens. Beliveau, Lafleur’s childhood idol, concurred in having Lafleur wear Number 4. “The more I think about it, the more I find it’s a good idea,” stated Beliveau at the time. “Why bury Number 4 six feet under as they did Maurice Richard’s Number 9?”
Couldn’t have said it better myself, Jean Beliveau. All those teams who retire piles of numbers should be considering that. (I loved having the Cubs give Mark Grace’s #17 to potential superstar Felix Pie. Hope Pie has the career Grace had.)

Paul –
I scanned the page for “Largent” and didn’t get a hit, so I feel compelled to throw this in – not only is Rice in Seahawk 80 jarring for anyone accustomed to seeing him in red, but for a Seahawk fan 80 refers an entirely different HOF receiver whose number had been officially retired. This also, of course, ties in with the recent Jackie Robinson tribute and takes us off on a new tangent:
How often have retired numbers found their way back on to the field of play?

You know, this thread could get really crazy if you throw in major league appearances in minor-league uniforms. I’m talking about after they’ve made it to the show, then either:
1. Go back for a rehab stint (like Randy Johnson pitching for Tucson last week),
2. Becoming a coach or manager with a team, or
3. Refusing to retire (yes, Rickey Henderson playing in Newark made me think in this direction).

In 1999 Brooks and his production company Red Strokes Entertainment, with Paramount Pictures, began to develop a movie in which Brooks would star. The Lamb was to have revolved around Chris Gaines, a fictional rock singer and his emotionally conflicted life as a musician in the public eye. To create buzz for the project, Brooks took on the identity of Gaines in the October 1999 album Garth Brooks In … The Life of Chris Gaines, which was intended as a ‘pre-soundtrack’ to the film.[17] Brooks also subsequently appeared as Gaines in a television mockumentary for the VH1 series Behind The Music and as the musical guest on an episode of Saturday Night Live which he hosted as himself.
Brooks’ endless promotion of the album and the film did not seem to stir much excitement and the success of the Chris Gaines experiment became fairly evident mere weeks after the album was released. Although critics admired Brooks for taking a musical risk, the majority of the American public was either totally bewildered, or completely unreceptive to the idea of Garth Brooks as anything but a pop-country singer.[18] Many of his fans also felt that by supporting the Gaines project they would lose the real Garth Brooks.[19] Sales of the album were unspectacular and although it made it to #2 on the pop album chart, expectations had been higher and retail stores began heavily discounting their oversupply.[20] Dismal sales of the album and lack of interest in the film brought the film production to an indefinite hiatus in February of 2001 and Gaines quickly and quietly faded into obscurity.

Similar to Messier, Clemens’ years in Toronto are forgettable, but for a different reason. I swear most sportswriters are just trying to pretend that two of his greatest seasons never happened, as if they were somehow a blight on an untouchable storybook career.

Belfour as a Predator doesn’t really count. Nashville had no intention of signing him, it was just exploiting a loophole in the CBA. Due to records, Nashville was eligible for draft pick compensation for “losing” Belfour to free agency, Dallas was not. The same year, Curtis Joseph was briefly a Calgary Flame for the same reasons.

There has to be a better way to do this; at leat half of the players that people are mentioning were done yesterday. I know it’s a pain to go scrolling through the 250+ posts from yesterday, but by that same token, those of us who actually took part in yesterday’s column keep seeing the same players mentioned over and over when their pics were already posted yesterday……
And people are missing the point of the whole column. Joe Montana in a KC Chiefs uniform is not what we’re talking about. Neither is Clemens’ with the Blue Jays. As pointed out above, Clemens’ played two full years with the Jays and won two Cy Youngs. Montana played two full years with the Chiefs. Same thing with Ozzie Smith; he played four full years with the Padres’ before being traded to the Cards. Those pics are easy to find with a simple Google search.
I think what Paul and the rest of us are looking for is players who had the proverbial “cup of coffee” with a team. So, think Brett Favre with the Falcons, Jerry Rice with the Broncos, Franco Harris with the Seahawks, Patrick Ewing with the Magic, John Elway with the Yankees minor league team, stuff like that. Think “obscure”.
This should be more about “I didn’t know he spent some time with that team” and less about “wow, isn’t it odd seeing Montana/Smith/Clemens in something else than a Niners/Cards/Red Sox uniform? It dosn’t seem right to me” column

How about this causing some chaos in our minds:
Michael Jordan a Philadelphia 76er? Julius Erving a Chicago Bull? If Harold Katz had had his way, both might have happened. In an interview for a forthcoming book, Katz, the former 76ers owner, revealed that he offered Erving to Chicago on the eve of the 1984 draft for the third overall pick, which the Bulls used to select Jordan. Then-Bulls GM Rod Thorn killed the deal.

I agree that we’ve seen lots of point-missing and look-at-me antics today and haven’t come up with much that Paul would actually use in a column.
Most of this stuff doesn’t fly in the NFL — everybody knows a lot of running backs hung on too long, like Dorsett, Emmitt, Franco, et al.
Sift through the muck, though, and you’ve got some good ones: ‘Sheed on the Hawks (that’s an A+), Piazza on the Marlins, Gaylord Perry on the Blue Jays, Gibby on the Pirates, Unit on the Astros.
Some more hockey oddballs: Adam Oates on the Flyers. (This is a direct predecessor to Tkachuk on the Thrashers; trade for a big-timer and flop out of the playoffs anyway.) Also, few seem to recall Esa Tikkanen with the Capitals in the ‘98 playoff run. Dale Hunter washed up with the Avalanche for a brief stint. Everyone seems to recall that rent-a-player Doug Weight played for the Cup-winning Hurricanes last year, but it seems forgotten that they also rented Mark Recchi, who really didn’t look right in that uni.
All Phillies should be disqualified: they’ve bailed out on so many future All-Stars (Sandberg, Jenkins, Franco, George Bell) and brought in so many has-beens (Lance Parrish, Gregg Jefferies, Danny Effing Tartabull) that nothing should be a surprise to any baseball fan.

Can’t find a Pic, but ESPN classic flashed a shot of Kobe Bryant in a Hornets hat right after he was picked in the 1996 NBA Draft. Right before, of course, he was traded for Vlade Divac.
I knew we were going to get there. Let’s post all the pics of the players with their draft caps on regardless of what happened later that day. For someone who clicks on every single link every single day (ok not the soccer ones) I have clicked on less that 10 today. And someone ruined my Garth Brooks joke with a 2 page explanation and I am still waiting for the picture of Shawn Kemp to come up. Let’s just say I am not having as much fun with this as the rest of you. Just a rant… first time a topic hasn’t interested me at all.
I guess that’s what I get for saying someting remotely positive about Kobe Bryant. Lord knows I loathe the guy. It won’t happen again…

In hockey, the only time a player, in my opinion, would qualify as a “cup of coffee” player is if he was picked up the deadline and then left in the off-season. If a player played more than 25 games with a team, he is not a “rental” in my books. It’s the same for rookies in the NHL: to be classified as a rookie and eligible for the Calder Trophy, the player has to play in 25 games during the regular season.
Some of these suggestions (Shanahan and Pronger on the Whalers, Naslund and Robitaille with the Penguins, Leetch with the Leafs and Bruins, Martin St. Louis with the Flames) are far from cameos. Guidelines have to be set here, otherwise this will get out of hand (if it already hasn’t).

There is actually a very practical reason for Carlos Guillen to keep his rear pockets tucked in. As a softball player, I would keep my Palmguard in my back pocket when I went up to bat, but was sometimes required to make sure that it was tucked entirely into my pocket. This was a superstition for me and I was frustrated, so I asked why. The explanation given was that the umpires did not want to have to deal with a controversial hit by pitch or tag play involving the dangling piece of uniform, which, to me, actually seems pretty reasonable.

Then the Boston mascot walks by and sees it drops his stuff and just walks off. Just thought it went with the Jersey cameo theme.

This might pay credence to the article posted here (last week?) saying that Manny will take any teammate’s gear who happens to be hot. Ortiz has been on fire lately and Manny has been snakebitten. Manny hit his first homer yesterday, not sure if he wore Ortiz’s things then, though.

So I’m gonna quit throwing in useless and somewhat inaccurate comments after this one.
Can anybody find a picture of David Wells with the Reds (11 games? I don’t know if Wells is worth reporting on because he has had several other brief stints throughout his career (16 games; White Sox and a briefish 34 total games; Orioles).
Jeromy Burnitz has played 14 seasons for 7 teams, but some of those terms were especially short. He appeared in 61 with the Dodgers and 80 with the Indians. These “cameos” were also too recent to be shocking.

I’m probably one of the few people in this world that like those green Red Sox jerseys. Though, I’d like someone to explain to me the logic of honoring a man named “Red” by wearing a green uniform. That seems to be more honoring the team (the Celtics) than the man, and the Sox do have a red alternate jersey.

Paul,
Having been a confirmed uniform geek for well over 40 years, I really enjoy your columns and your blog. One quibble, though. Why do you think it’s necessary to use the word “fuck”?
I am not a prude by any stretch — as a matter of fact, I made my living as a stand-up comic for 10 years, so the word is certainly in my vocabulary. In adult venues I have no qualms with its use, but if, as I suspect, your readership includes a number of young people as well, why use inappropriate language? There is certainly enough coarseness and vulgarity in the world without adding to it in a forum that really doesn’t need it.
Thank you,
George
