Derek Lowe is scheduled to pitch tonight for the Dodgers. I’d been looking forward to this, because several readers reported over the weekend that Lowe was spotted in the dugout during last Saturday’s game with a captain’s “C” on his jersey. Unfortunately, nobody provided a screen grab or even specified the inning in which Lowe was visible, and I haven’t had the patience to scroll through the entire gamecast to find the appropriate shot (or the heart to ask Vince to do it), but I figured we’d all get to see the C when Lowe took the mound this evening.
The thing is, I couldn’t find anything on the web about Lowe having been named the Dodgers’ captain. So yesterday I called the team’s PR office, where a spokesperson let all the air out of the balloon: “He’s not the captain. That was just a joke that the other players played on him — they put the C on his jersey as a prank.” Too bad. This means Jason Varitek and Mike Sweeney maintain their status as MLB’s only current C-clad captains. (Derek Jeter is also a team captain, but he doesn’t wear the designatory letter.)
The reason the Lowe situation was so intriguing, of course, is that pitchers almost never serve as team captains. C-clad pitchers are rarer still, and C-clad starting pitchers rarest of all — rare, but not unprecedented. Back in 2000, the Cubs had four captains, all of whom wore C sleeve patches (a confusing protocol, since “Chicago” and “Cubs” both start with C): Sammy Sosa, Mark Grace, reliever Rick Aguilera (you can just barely make out his C here), and starting pitcher Kevin Tapani (the best shots I’ve been able to find are here and here).
So at least for a day there, Lowe was an honorary member of a very exclusive club. Maybe he’ll be a real captain someday — but first he really needs to something about his pants. That’s no way for a person of stature and responsibility to dress. Meanwhile, if anyone recalls roughly when they showed Lowe during Saturday’s game, I’ll do a screen grab to preserve the moment for posterity. Uni Watch News Ticker: Nice gesture last night by the Nationals, who acknowledged the shootings at Virginia Tech by wearing Hokie caps — or, more specifically, a variety of Hokies caps (much like the assorted first responder caps that the Mets wear annually on September 11th). The Nats actually wore their regular caps in the 1st inning before coming out in the Virginia Tech lids for the top of the 2nd, because the truck with the collegiate caps got stuck in traffic (details here). This may have been posted last night, but did anyone see Willie Randolph, and then the umpires make Freddie Garcia change his glove last night before the Mets/Phillies game. It was bright red. He went into the dugout and came back with a black one. I was watching on SNY, and their announcers thought they had changed the rule about colored gloves. They thought you could wear any color as long as it wasn’t white. Does anyone know anything further?
Also from that game, Jose Valentin was wearing glasses for some, but not all of the game.

D-Lowe is far from captain material, and I highly doubt we’ll EVER see that C on his jersey legitimately. While a terrific pitcher on the field, he has zero leadership qualities and some serious character issues. (Cheating on his wife with an LA news reporter, notorious for drinking and gambling to excess…)
Staying on the captain’s issue… does anyone know if they name captains for Olympic hoop teams, and if they have some sort of Uni-designation?

Looking at the new Premier League number font guidelines here, and while I’m absolutely against the idea of a league forcing every team to use the same font, it at least looks better than what they had last season.
In particular, I like the proportions: giant 253-millimeter* numbers, yet the names are small and unobtrusive at 53 mm, or only about one-fifth as big as the numbers. Massive surname lettering can spill right off the jersey and look quite ugly.
I wish the league would let the teams show some originality. Baseball has already forced all the teams to use the same manufacturer — next thing you know, Bud Selig will be implementing something like this in baseball and eliminating the venerable Cubs and Red Sox fonts!
* – Why 253? Why not a nice round 250, or 254 (which is exactly 12 inches)? Was it some kind of compromise between the metric faction and the English faction? “OK, then, we’ll use a number that isn’t round for anyone!”

I have heard another reason for the reverse flag. On the side of things in motion(vehicles, planes, or on sleeves) the flag is supposed to look like it is affected by the wind. So, on a person moving forward, the flag on the right sleeve should be reversed.

Here is the section of the U.S. Flag Code that talks about the display of the flag on the sleeve. Here is the link.
§176. Respect for flag
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

At last night’s Rangers/Thrashers game, I noticed that Greg deVries’ name appears on his sweater with the “DE” in smaller font, but in capital letters. You can just make it out here: http://fantasyhockey... and here: http://images.google... (you need to scroll down a little on this one).

Maybe I’m an Under Armour apologist because I’m in Baltimore (and a Terp), but I don’t think the USC unis are that bad. I think they are superior to the wrap around bib look Nike has been parading around…and I’m sure during cold games their sleeves will be the same color too!
USA unis – Why does the shirt say the full “USA” and the hat just the “US?” Pick one and go with it! I like “USA” on the jersey and maybe a nice graphic only flag style logo for the hat.

I was at the Braves/Nats game last night. I really thought the Braves might protest some of the V-Tech hats. A couple of their releivers, Ryan Wagner and Jesus Colome, wore the hats with a bright orange front. I thought the Braves might consider that a bit too distracting for a pitcher to wear, and ask them to wear an all-maroon hat.

USA baseball should go old school, and design a classic uniform for the team. We invented the game, after all. I’ve always been a big fan of Stanford’s unis, and I think a simple “United States” across the front, with an interlocking “USA” cap would be great.

Regarding the USA Baseball unis. I like the current jersey, and in fact bought one during the WBC last year. The caps are awful, though. They should either come up with a logo of some sort that doesn’t include any letters, or find a way to superimpose the letters onto each other, like the middle one on this page. I’ve never been a fan of long, horizontal lettering on caps.

I think the second option is the best choice, just because the font reminds me of the US military (to fit the charging flag). If we’re using the uniforms to defend our nation’s sport, it makes sense.

Teebz, when you read this, can you explain some of the duties of the captain (and assistants) in hockey? I know goalies can’t wear the C or A anymore because they would have to leave their crease to speak to refs, which they’re not allowed to do. What else do captains do?

Sorry if this was already posted, but here are little more details about the South Carolina Under Armour deal here I found it interesting that this is a football only deal. For such a big school I would think under armour would attempt to outfit some of the other sports. I mean I know their are programs out there similar to this, but none the less I still found it interesting.

The Captain also is the spokesperson for the players to the coach, they tend to be the intermediary between the coaches and players. In hockey it truly is a leadership role every day, not just for game days, but for practices, and off days as well.

Former Virginia Tech Hokie and current Los Angeles Angels pitcher Joe Saunders is planning his own tribute in the fallen students honor when he takes the mound Friday according to this article.
“You can’t do anything on your uniform,” Saunders said. “I was going to do a black VT on my hat. I’ll put a black VT on my cleats, write Virginia Tech [with his cleats] on the back of the mound.”

Kevin Gregg of the Marlins was wearing sunglasses on his hat when he came out of the bullpen last night, and then proceeded to pitch with them on (in the normal, eye covering, position). This was in the first inning after Sergio Mitre had to leave the game… the announcers commented that they thought he had forgotten the glasses were on his had as the roof in Arizona had recently been closed.

I say that from the standpoint that it’s just plain disrespectful to put a flag on a uniform that is designed to get dirty and often ends up on the ground. Outfielder Chris Snelling donated his hat to the Baseball Hall of Fame, where it will go on display alongside the caps used by the Yankees and Mets after 9/11. At least six other game-worn caps were signed by players and will be sent to the Virginia Tech athletic department.

But if I remember correctly, the guy who was QB for the Ravens at the time (whose name escapes me, but I think he also played at Louisville, where Unitas went to college) wore a pair of “illegal” black high tops in the first game played after Unitas died.
You also may remember the NFL shutting down Marshall Faulk’s request to wear #34 the weekend after Walter Payton died.

Chris Redman wore the black shoes in a 25-0 home loss against the Buccaneers, who went on to win the Super Bowl that year. The game was noteworthy in that the Bucs wore the rarely seen red jersey-white pants combo. All kinds of photos out there of Redman getting sacked, but they all cut off just above the shoes.

last night i was watching sportscenter, and it showed a shot of the D’Backs second basemen making a Top 10 play, and they had on the brick red alt’s. When I first saw it I thought that it was the Astro’s and i was kind of excited to see that they actually made a good play. I remember Paul saying the D’Bags copied the Astros but now I completely agree. Why did they choose the same colors?

I am an Auburn student, and we wear Under Armour in every sport. our basketball team wears under armour uniforms and AND1 sneakers, our women’s hoops team wears UA unis and Nike sneakers. baseball, softball, football are UA head to toe. our track team wears nike only until their contract expires then they must switch to UA. the university signed a contract to outfit all the varsity sports as soon as UA has the apparel, i.e. they need to start making swimwear before we switch to them for swimming and diving, but as soon as they do, we will be UA in all sports.

I don’t know that there’s many NASCAR fans here, but NASCAR has announced that entries in its three national series (Cup, Busch, Truck) will display a Va. Tech decal for the next three weeks.
It’s supposed to be the “VT” logo on a black background behind the drivers’ safety nets. I don’t have a link, but the release was just e-mailed to us.

South Carolina is currently in the middle of contracts with other companies for the other varsity sports. Under Armour’s CEO said Saturday they hope to supply all South Carolina sports when the other contracts expire.
As a Gamecock fan I love the uniforms. We’ve been screaming for the past 10+ years for a change from Russell to any of the major brands. Signing with Under Armour, which is still pretty exclusive with few teams in college football, is icing on the cake.

Im not sure if this has been mentioned before….but the flag is backwards on the jersey because it is on the player’s Right sleeve. This gives the impression that when the person is running, the wind is “flowing” through the flag as if a breeze is blowing the flag in that direction. If it were on the Left sleeve, the flag would appear as it appears on pretty much every other item.

I just lost a post that took me about 10 minues to get it fully linked up with pictures of our boy Juan Pierre over the years. I am not going to search out all of the pictures again, but basically what I found was that the green underbrim would be something new for him. No pictures from the Rockies, Marlins, or Cubs show him wearing green.
I do have to include this picture that I found of him. Is that Billy Dee Williams reppin’ Colt 45??

I am glad that they are going back to black for their home jerseys though. The pants look OK, but nothing special.

What is it about Bay Area athletes not being able to keep their pants up? In the Warriors/Blazers game Mickael Pietrus just pulled an Antonio Bryant: he had his shorts pulled down below his ass by a a Blazers defender. Sorry, not able to get a screen grab — anyone? (It happened at a bout the 3:10 mark of the 2nd quarter.)

I know it’s small, but I’ve always loved the Portland Rockies old logo. Never mind Portland Rockies makes no geographical sense. And no complaints about the purple either. It isn’t that bad.

Not a one of those USA baseball unis looks like anything but crap. How about something a little more tasteful? We don’t need stars and stripes, that’s what the flag is for. Maybe just blue unis with white script “USA” shadowed in red. And yeah, those are terrible lids.

I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned it before but Paul Konerko is the captin for the Chicago White Sox. When asked if he wanted to don the “C” on his jersey, he refused, claiming that he didn’t want to stand out in front of his teammates. This is an example of a true team leader — that and winning the World Series.
I know I’m a little late but I thought that you would like to know.

I say this because i’m fairly certain that most of the US infantry troops wear flag patches, and they tend to get much dirtier than your average ball player.
