While I was in San Francisco last week, Uni Watch pastry chef Liz Clayton took me to Kayo Books, which specializes in old comics, pulp novels, and related sleaze. Pulp novels occasionally had uni-related cover art, so I was hoping to hit paydirt with something that struck the perfect balance between sex and uniforms. I was only partially successful (more on that in a sec), but I did manage to turn up some more conventional sports titles, with lots of great uni-related content. Here’s a quick rundown:
Curling with Ken Watson, by Ken Watson (Harlequin, 1958). Not to be confused with the similarly titled Ken Watson on Curling (I always get them mixed up, don’t you?), this 222-pager features lots of amzing curling sweaters. I love the crossed-brooms patch shown here, and look how nubby this one is. But apparently some teams just wore plaid shirts, which doesn’t even seem like a fair fight. Best photo of the bunch: this dude, with his dangling cigarette.
1962 Pro Football Handbook, by Don Schiffer (Pocket, 1962). This book includes both NFL and AFL coverage, including some good shots of the Dallas Texans, an early AFL official (you can’t tell from the b&w photo, but those stripes are actually red, not black), an excellent view of the Packers’ early-1960s triple-striped pants, and heartening evidence that the Bears’ socks haven’t changed one bit in 45 years.
1969 NFL-AFL Illustrated Digest, by Don Smith and Ed Croke (Poretz-Ross, 1969). By this time, the merger was imminent and the Jets had beaten the Colts in Super Bowl III, which may explain the hierarchy of logos on the back cover. Tons of great stuff here — better break it out into a list:
• There’s a six-page feature, called “The Evolution of Football Equipment,” in the middle of the book. You can see some of the better bits here and here.
• Most of you know that the Cowboys’ equipment staff has always put Dymo Tape name labels on the team’s helmets. Looks like the Browns used to do this too, as seen here and here.
• Look at that last photo again. See how the Saints’ helmet and pants striping goes in the familiar black-white-black sequence? After the second game of the 1968 season, the team inexplicably reversed the sequence, so that the helmet and pants striping both went white-black-white for the rest of the season. In 1969, they went back to black-white-black.
• Here’s Sonny Jurgensen playing, as he often did, without a chinstrap.
• Look how huge the Giants’ helmet numbers used to be!
• The thing I miss most about straight-on placekickers: square-toed shoes.
As for the sports/sleaze intersection, the best I could find on Kayo’s shelves was this, but it’s a real stinker, uni-wise. Like, is that the sorriest excuse for a football helmet you’ve ever seen or what? The earhole isn’t even in the right place! This shoddy illustration work no doubt explains why the guy sitting next to me couldn’t stop staring at the cover as I read this book on the flight home.
Party Report: Speaking of last week’s road trip, the two Uni Watch parties were big successes. The San Francisco gathering was a particularly raucous caucus, with a sizable crew showing up at Lefty O’Doul’s, where there was lots of memorabilia on the walls and no shortage of light, nourishing fare on the menu. Among the attendees:
• Here’s the very jovial Al Cummings, who kept me entertained with stories all night long and also went above and beyond by presenting me with a set of stirrups from Serra High School (”They’re post-Lynn Swann but pre-Barry Bonds,” as he put it), which I immediately pulled on. Not only that, but Al says his daughter works as a colorist for a major sportswear company and has promised to arrange a Uni Watch interview with her. Thanks again, Al!
• David Arnot looked sharp in his Uni Watch cap. But Aaron Strickland went a step further, by having me autograph his Uni Watch sweatshirt (he even brought along a green marker, so the signature would be color-coordinated).
• John Moist wore my favorite jersey of the evening — a 1942 New Orleans Pelicans beauty.
• Here’s Paul Hirsch, who not only wore a gorgeous 1960s Reds vest but also brought along an amazing piece of ephemera: a postcard from Marc Okkonen, author of Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century. Apparently Hirsch had written to Okkonen to point out a few errors in the first edition, and Okkonen responded in hilariously impressive detail.
• At first glance, it looks like Tim Cook is wearing an ancient, battered T-shirt. But it’s actually a brand-new “pre-distressed” model from Reebok, which he purchased only an hour or two before the party.
• Pilar Olivas is already bemoaning Trot Nixon’s defection to the Indians, for obvious reasons.
• I liked Mark Campbell’s understated Calgary shirt and John Mandsager’s KC A’s cap. But the most interesting merchandised product of the evening was Richard Craig’s briefcase, made of genuine Rawlings glove leather.
• No jersey, cap, or briefcase for Brandon Davis, but he did bring along a lacrosse helmet from Dominican University, where he works. And get this: As you can see from the helmet, the team is called the Penguins — and that’s because Dominican is a Catholic school that used to be run by nuns.
Things were a bit more low-key the following night in Dallas, but there were still some good shirts on display, most notably William Denton’s Danbury Trashers T-shirt and Ian Voorn’s Asian jersey of uncertain origin. Jesse Ghiorzi, who works for the Texas Tornado hockey team, brought along a jersey for me to try (it was just a little big), and Robert Eden, Patrick Woody, and Alicia Stepp showed me plenty of Texas hospitality.
Big thanks to all who came out — it was great meeting all of you.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The Dolphins plan to tweak their uni number font for next season. … You can read about the Hurricanes’ reactions to the new NHL unis here (with thanks to Matt Brukman and Clayton Hollingsworth). … Jorgen Jonsson recently played his record-setting 273rd game for Swedish national hockey team, and had a special jersey for the occasion (with thanks to Antti Salmi). … Some interesting uni-related eBay items here, here and here. … Good article here about the guy who makes NHL stick-curve gauges (as spotted by Jerry Wolper). … And here’s a decent piece on MLB “cap surgery.”

Not every Hurricane was eager to dissect the intricacies of what amounted to a league-sponsored fashion event. Team captain Rod Brind’Amour shrugged. “I’m the wrong guy to ask. I could care less,” he said. “As long as I got a number and a name on it, it’s fine.”

Regarding the artwork on those pulp novels, Fred Fixler used to draw several of those covers, mostly for the Brandon House publishing company. As a contract artist for Coca-Cola, Fixler also designed several basketball and football game programs, which were used by high schools, colleges and minor league teams for their game programs (Coca-Cola kept the center page for advertising purposes). I have a gallery of Fred Fixler covers, as well as several other Coca-Cola artists from the “mayonnaise school” of advertising art, please visit my CBA Museum page with a subsection on Coca-Cola program covers.

The “cap surgery” looks like a lot of work, considering the end product does not look much different than the original cap. Perhaps photos of the hat being worn would have better demonstrated the results.

It could be, since the Raiders helmets didn’t have a decals on then until 1963. Their unis also had those triple stripes on the sleeve jerseys at the time – but with gold outlining around the numbers.

The cap looks completely different after the “new era” surgery. We used to do it for baseball in college to our 5950’s. It takes about an inch off the top and they are much more comfortable.

#41 by Josh on 02.13.07 12:02 pm |
Cutting the guts out of the fitted hat is completely unnecessary.
All you gotta do is completely immerse it in COLD (not hot) water, ring it out, and put it on. Once it’s on, smooth it out on your head and it will take the well worn shape you like. Keep it on your head until it dries completely (the bill is hard) or else it will shrink.
#42 by timmy b on 02.13.07 12:03 pm |
not only have the bears kept the same sock stripes since at least 1961, they have kept the same stripe combo on their white pants (navy-orange-navy) since 1941. while the width of stripes may have changed here and there, it is oldest design of an nfl uniform still in use. (67 years!)

Nearly all hats in the stores seem “low-rise” to me except for the 5950s. When buying a hat, it’s definitely better to have a small head than a big one. Even if I can get a hat with a big enough circumference, it’s often not tall enough.

That’s a good point because I think New Era’s new hats (which are not wool) are designed not to shrink (or shrink as little as possible), so I’m not sure just getting it wet while wearing it will work as well as it did for the wool New Eras. It’s too bad too, because that’s how I broke in my wool Astros hat: wore it while moving to a new apartment in the rain.

Hey, I’m the guy who wrote the “surgery” article, thanks for checking. It doesn’t work too well with already worn hats. I’ve tried it a coupla times but it doesn’t have the same effect as it does with a brand new cap. You can “unshrink” you cap by popping the inside seams (the last step). hope that helps.
Metsfan AZ said:
Buy the same size cap you would normally buy, basically buy the cap that fits your head. It will shrink a little, but like I said, you can pop the seams and it will fit again. By “synthetic caps”, do you mean the spring training ones? I never tried it with those, only regular New Era 5950’s.

That Packers picture has to be from ‘61; they didn’t have the G on their helmets in 1960 and by 62 had switched to the wider green-white-green stripes similar to today. What’s also notable is the San Francisco uni in that foto – shoulder stripes, no drop shadows and a SILVER helmet! I still can’t figure out who thought it would be a good idea for a team named after gold miners to wear silver.

Hear, hear Paul. I recently tried in vain to find looking for the second worst NBA uni of all time–the 1989-90 Washington Bullets’ home whites (not quite as bad as the mid-90s Cavs road unis).
If you remember, the classic lowercase “b” in the team logo was capitalized and outlined in red, making it all but illegible. The rear nameplate had a capitalized first letter with the rest in lowercase–the whole nameplate was also outlined in red, making it look like an ink spill.
They did tweak it for the next year, taking out the superfluous trim and making the nameplate all caps. Still the “improved” design (which survived until the name change to Wizards in 1998) has got to at least be the most boring uni in NBA history.
Either way, I can’t find a good photo of this monstrosity. Can anyone help?

Pete was under contract with Mizuno. I had (still have in the closet) a Mizuno windbreaker that my high school baseball team wore. They were to trap the heat during the spring and keep our arms warm. I am guessing that is what he is wearing.

He should be banned for his hair alone.
Remember the rat-tail he had when we broke Ty Cobb’s hit record? Brutal.
Worst hair in sports history? Pete?
Several nominations:
Whitey Herzog
Mitch ‘Wild Thing’ Williams
Mitch ‘Blood’ Green
Brian Bosworth
Randy Johnson
Don Sutton (now)
Marv Albert (not sure if that even qualifies as hair)

My guess is that it is an old picture. Wigan was sponsored by Adidas in late 90’s, which was before JJB started making jerseys.

Check out what Gilbert Arenas is doing for the all star game:
“Arenas will take to Las Vegas 100 All-Star jerseys with the word “Agent” instead of “Arenas” above his number zero on the back. He’ll toss them to fans — similar to the way he tosses his own jersey into the crowd after Wizards games — and then plans to wear one when he takes the court for the game.
Arenas said he’ll get away with it because he’s starting the game.
“They won’t know until the game starts,” he said.
So much for the secret. In any event, such a gimmick could draw a fine.
“It’s worth getting fined for,” Arenas said, “because all those people who got the Arenas Zero jerseys are going to feel special.”

I think the hat Igawa is wearing is one of the new 5950 gameday hats, and both of the sox pictures showcase old equipment: both are wearing the old fleece tops rather than the new thermabase ones, pappelbon’s old BP hat, Lester appears to be wearing the 100% wool 5950’s worn last year.
look over beck’s ear, it looks like the new bp hat…

don’t think I’ve seen this discussed here yet, the EPL (English Premer League soccer) is coming out with its new logo and I personally like the change!

And I always do surgery on my formed hats. The only changes I make from the article are 1. After the intial cut, I use a finger to loosen large areas from the outer fabric and cut them out. 2. As others have stated I get the hat wet and wear it until 100% dry when finished with the surgery.

Hey guys, I was looking for this jersey from the Oakland/California seals. I can find jerseys for the Golden Seals that just say seals across the front, but not with the seal logo.
I am sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but it seemed like my best bet to post here with other uniform fanatics. And I hoped someone could help me locate a jersey with that logo. Thanks alot guys.

All Bruins players wore “9″ patches on their right shoulders for John “Chief” Bucyk Night. They honored him for his 50 years of Bruins service, both as a player and in the front office.

Ian, I was actually kidding about the name of the player, but the company, Taiyô Bijutsu Shikô (Sun Papermaking) in Okayama Prefecture is very real.
You can see the company’s web site here:

I would be more than happy to give them a call and ask about the jersey if you’d like. It looks to me like it’s from the late 1980s or early 1990s and was surely used in an industrial league that the company played in.

Yes, that’s the road red from that year! The capital B! The horrible italic number! But the home whites are missing from the internet.
I even searched for that team’s two big stars–Bernard King and Moses Malone–but came away empty. I found Moses in about 15 other uniforms–Paul should do a piece just on him!

Ads at Wrigley
For some reason this does bother me that much, although I know it will upset some. Fenway brought back the ads on the Green Monster, but the original monster was covered with ads – so it isn’t entirely a new trend.
