Picking on the Pro Bowl is almost too easy, but here’s something that’s been bugging me: Why do they keep putting the term “All-Star” on the jerseys? In past years it’s been on the front, and this year it was on the back, but I always find it confusing. Like, they’re not all-stars — they’re all-pros, right? And just what is the difference between an all-star and an all-pro? And if they’re all-stars, why isn’t the game called the NFL All-Star Game? Shouldn’t the name “Pro Bowl” be reserved for the Pro Bowlers Tour or something?
Such metaphysical imponderables notwithstanding, this year’s game was the usual aesthetic train wreck. Whose bright idea was it to put all that blue detailing on the AFC jersey? Or the red detailing in the NFC design? And why do they insist on using those embarrassing star patterns? And why do they keep putting the Pro Bowl logo just above each player’s butt crack each year? And did anyone honestly believe that the Vikings/Cardinals-style pants template was the best option available? And why did they have the AFC wear red socks with red pants? And, and, and …
Okay, enough. A few specific observations from Saturday’s game:
• Devin Hester wore an amber visor (a no-no) with Oakley-branded tabs (a double-no-no).
• The two Broncos players in the game — John Lynch and Champ Bailey — asked the league if they could all wear No. 27 in honor of the late Darrent Williams, but the league said no. They wore “27″ helmet decals instead.
• Chad Johnson wore his orange chinstrap. This is the only game pic I could find, but here’s a practice photo from earlier in the week.
• Several players on both squads wore star-spangled shoes (AFC, NFC).
• Several AFC players wore red shoelaces.
And if any of you actually watched the game, I don’t even wanna know. Just pretend you were doing something more constructive, like taking a nap.

There is a distinction between Pro Bowl and All-Pro–not all Pro Bowl All-Stars are All-Pro. The Pro Bowl is a popularity contest and only the AP writers vote for the All-Pro team.

Love Coach K’s all-white sneakers. Hopefully he had time after the game to take them back to his grandma’s closet before she noticed her mall-walking shoes were missing. Wonder how much he’s getting paid for that footwear endorsement deal with Dexter.

I found this article in the St. Pete Times this weekend. It looks as if new infielder, Akinori Iwamura, from Japan will be sporting a new glove this season. He will wear an alligator skin glove (paragraph eight) in honor of his new Florida home. Has anybody ever worn a glove like this before? I guess they don’t have PETA in Japan.

I was at the Caps-Rangers game Saturday and never noticed Jagr’s sweater tucked in. I did leave with about 2 minutes left, which is about when he scored that goal, so maybe he tucked it then…..

Paul, I thought the cleats had a Hawaiin flower theme and not a star spangled theme. This was mentioned a couple of days ago(?) in the comments section with a couple of examples from last years game selling on eBay. (The cleats last year had the flowers only on bottom while this year you could actually see them.) I’ll check the comments to try and find it.

I was watching the typically fantastic “America’s Game” on NFL Network last night and they were showing the ‘72 Dolphins team that went undefeated, and while they had a perfect record their uniforms were decidedly imperfect. Some of the guys that had the number “2″ on their jerseys had DIFFERENT 2s on the front than on the back!
As you can see in this photo of Mercury Morris, the front of his jersey has a 2 with a little serif on the end, but his on his sleeve the 2 is missing the serif. The back of his jersey had 2s like the sleeves, not the front.
If you go to ag.nfl.com and click on the ‘72 Dolphins photo gallery there is a photo of Paul Warfield making a catch with his back to the camera and his 42 with the different numeral clearly visible.
The other weird thing was that not all of the Dolphins had mismatched 2s. Bob Griese’s 12 was consistent on the front, back, and sleeves. Miami’s punter wore #20 and his 2 was mismatched, along with Warfield’s 42, Jim Kiick’s 21, and some other guys. HOWEVER, they showed a quick shot of #32 on the bench and HIS 2s were the same front and back.
I went through a whole lot of “Am I seeing that right?” while watching that show. Lots of great 70s unis as well.

Ok, I know you have a problem with Nike. But I have one with Reebok. Nike’s logo is streamlined and represents sports in a positive way. Reebok’s logo is quite bulky, big, and most of all…ugly. Reebok’s choic of designs for the NFL have been terrible, there patterns on fan apparel along with uniforms and coaching gear is awful. It seems at times that Reebok is stuck in the 90s with all the big bold designs. As for those shoes worn in the Popularity-Bowl….absolutey hideous, and quite tacky. As if the coaching shirts werent bad enough. I liked the practice jerseys, and I would not mind seeing next year that they go to solid uniforms no freakin striping no damn flowers. I wonder if Hester will be fined for his visor, knowing the league I am sure they will.

Whatever happened to those nice, conservative Pro Bowl uniforms from the 1980s? The AFC wore white with red numerals, the NFC blue with white numerals, and the jerseys read “AMERICAN” and “NATIONAL,” respectively, across the front. Basic striping, basic numerals, that’s it. Where did they go?
That said, this year’s version wasn’t as bad as it’s been in recent years, what with the color-fades, the NFL-Europe-inspired miniature numerals on the front, etc.
I think it might be too confusing for the QBs to have everyone wear their own jerseys, particularly on the team wearing dark colors (easier, obviously, for the team wearing white). The NHL probably doesn’t do that for the same reason; just too difficult to instantly spot a teammate. I always liked seeing all the different helmets worn over the Pro Bowl uniform. No need to change that.

For what it’s worth, Jagr has worn his sweater tucked-in (at least off-and-on) ever since his Pittsburgh Penguin days. Just guessing here, but maybe he does it to make it harder for the opposition to grab onto his sweater! (Wayne Gretzky had the habit of tucking one side of his sweater into his pants, but he developed that habit as a kid, playing against much older players and wearing sweaters that were a bit too big for him!)

One note about the red Sixers jerseys from the original article. They aren’t V-Day specific; they’re going to be the permanent 2nd road uniform, and as I recall, they’re to be worn no fewer than 6 and no more than 15 road games per season.

The Pro Bowl is a circus. They uni’s make them look like clowns, so in a way they fit, but it makes me want to puke.
Has anyone mentioned/ thought of the “300 lb. test”? What I mean is do the uni’s look good on the big guys especially? As with the Oregon football uni’s they look bad on everyone, but they REALLY look bad on the linemen. Just like seeing a regular joe wearing bright, trendy, or flashy XXXXLs from the Big & Tall…terrible.

“All-Pro” means you have been voted the #1 player at your position for the past season. Only 22 position players are named “All-Pro.” The Pro-Bowl is voted on by players, coaches, and fans. Multiple players from each position are selected. Being a “pro-bowler” is nice, but being “All-Pro” is highest honor, short of MVP or POY.

the philadelphia eagles from 1970 thru 1973 wore the exact same style fonts (front, back, sleeves) as did the 72 dolphins’ white sleeve striped jerseys.

Also, in football, the Bears’ sleeve numbers look different compared to the numbers on the front and back. Maybe because they’re only half as tall but more than half as thick, the “8″ is really squashed on the sleeves. I don’t find it annoying but I’m sure some people do.

I watched the Grammy Awards last night and it looked like Stewart Copeland (drummer for The Police) was wearing a Nike iD shirt. The left arm had the tribal image (similar to this image) and what looked like a Swoosh. I never would have recognized the tribal image but thanks to my devotion to this blog it caught my eye.

It’s not uncommon for teams in the NFL to have different styled numbers for the fronts/backs and sleeves. Sleeve numbers tend to be wider proportionally. In some cases (like Green Bay), the 5’s are different. In Chicago’s case, the numbers are more compact, and look bolder.
I like the way Chicago’s sleeve numbers are different from the fronts (which in some numbers are also different than the backs…check out the 4….the bar is lower on the front than the back). It’s easy to spot the fake “authentic” Bears jerseys that way. If the sleeve numbers look like the fronts and backs, it’s not an authentic on-field jersey.

As was mentioned on Friday in the comments section, the print on the Pro Bowl players cleats is that of a floral print, namely a Hibiscus print. It’s the state flower of Hawaii.

UA also made another blue uniform that looks identical to this one except it has AU on the left chest and the numbers low on the right front. they also made a white, an orange, and a grey uniform for Auburn. i can’t find any pictures of them, but Hofstra wore some ridiculous blue, white, and yello pinwheel-style caps on friday with a very subdued grey uniform.

What I’ve never understood about the Pro-Bowl is why they even play it at all? Most All Star events are pretty trivial, but the Pro-Bowl makes less sense than any of the other pro sports all games.
It kills me how every year everyone (the media) makes a big deal out of the selections, and players and coaches are constantly asked about people who were “shafted”, by not getting voted in. The player’s responses are always the same, but you know they’re thinking, “Thank God I don’t have to do that!”
Most of the guys that do play are more worried about thier contracts and keeping healthy than the outcome of the game (rightfully so), so the fans don’t really care who wins.
And 3rd, it takes place after the season is over! At least other sports do these events mid season when fans are still locked in. You know almost every player on that sideline just wants to go home and relax with his family before starting practice for the next season, esspecially those guys from playoff teams that may have just finished 18 to 19 games seasons.
The game doesn’t even rotate around host cities that can use the event to draw tourism revenue, so I can’t image the team’s sponsor cities would even care if the event went away.
If getting voted onto the Pro-Bowl team is an honor, we all get that–so let the all star voting continue, but just ditch the game.

The logo itself isn’t bad. What is bad is when that logo is plastered on the hat, on the sleeve, on the neck of the undershirt, on the ball, on the bases. If you are watching the World Series on TV, what are the chances that you don’t know that you are watching the World Series? We, as viewers, do not need to be constantly hit over the head with the logo.
A simple, proportional sleeve patch would suffice.
I guess I hadn’t thought of this before, but what is the purpose of the WS or SB logos? Like Stuby just said, what are the chances we won’t watch it? Like if they had not released the logo in February we would assume they aren’t playing the WS this year? I can see wanting the logo on your team’s gear if they make it. (I have a 2000 WS logoed Mets cap). But other than that, what’s the point? and why pre release it?
because it’ll be great to see the logo the mets will be wearing on their jerseys and hats come october a little early ;) i kinda dig the logo i won’t lie. i like the incorporation of yellow back into it, the one thing they need to fix this year from last is usually the caps have a smaller version of the logo on them. but the cards and tigers had the full logo on their hats and it looked ridiculouly too big. still though best ws logo was 2000.

That design is league-wide. The OKLAHOMA CITY (for awhile longer) Hornets warmups are teal with the black sports bra look, and all visiting teams are similarly designed. I noticed that the first game I went to this year. Weird. Don’t know if it’s NIKE deal or Reebok or what, but someone screwed it up…

Actually, Paul’s always been really clear about stuff he likes…horizontal stripes on socks, simple, clean unis (there’s lots of stuff, but I have a headache, and he’ll be able to defend himself better than I could)
I’m a nike fan, but certain things they’ve done, ie the mismatched sleeves, swooshes in every possible spot (like the knees of hockey socks – which, in fairness, I saw on CCM/Reebok stuff first) are a little too much.

Those Sixers’ jerseys are amazing! I wish they would make that their pimary jersey. They went from having some of the best jerseys in NBA history to wearing some of the ugliest. They are so close to redeeming themselves with the Valentine’s Day jerseys. If only they could be worn for more than one game. I LOVE the red (as opposed to the copperish/blackish and the blue). I also love to see the PHILA across the front. It reminds me of the good old days…which I wasn’t alive for.

Maybe someone already mentioned this but the mannequins on the main picture of Saturday’s open thread featured the AFC Pro Bowl unis in an all white presentation and the NFC in a blue jersey and red pants but during the Pro Bowl the AFC wore the red pants to the AFC and the NFC wore the white pants. I’m in agreement with many of you that the Sixers’ red unis are sharp. I’ve never been a huge fan of their current uniforms, but I always thought they worked well because Allen Iverson was THE identity of that team, and the look of those black uniforms seemed to fit in with him really well. Now that he’s moved on, and the team will need to find a new identity, I think it would be the perfect time to switch things up and go back to the red-blue color scheme. Any thoughts?

Freedom of speech is not absolute. It is the principle that “Congress shall make no law…” requiring U.S. citizens to say, think or write, or refrain from saying, thinking or writing, any particular thing. That’s all it is.
Even under this Constitutional principle, not all speech is protected. “Shouting ‘Fire!’ in a crowded theatre” is the most ubiquitous example. Hate speech is another. There is no “freedom of speech” defense for libel, slander, defamation, sexual harrassment, conspiracy, solicitation, etc.

Regarding different-styled numerals on the same team…
Take a look here at the cover of the 1989 NY Jets yearbook. Compare the numeral 2 on Mickey Shuler’s jersey on the left, and Erik McMillan’s on the right.
I think the Jets back then (late ’80s, before the black trim was added) had warm- and cold-weather jerseys, each of which used slightly different numeral and lettering fonts. The warm-weather jerseys used the “diagonal” 2 and thick, rounded lettering ont he nameplate, while the cold-weather jerseys used the “squared” 2 with thinner, block lettering. Note that the Jets almost always wore white from ‘85-’89; coach Joe Walton preferred to wear white at home because he felt it made the players look bigger.
Here’s something I could never figure out: the Jets never used serif lettering on nameplates in their history, until the “throwback” game they played in ‘93 against the Bengals. This gave someone the idea that they had used serif lettering on the Namath-era jerseys. They used it again on the throwback unis in ‘94, started using it regularly around ‘95 or so, then adopted it when they made the uniform change in ‘98. Why didn’t anyone at the Jets catch this?
(Strangely, the Giants switched from serif to sans-serif lettering the same way, at the same time…)

yes, any involvement of the actual words “Oklahoma” and “City”, whether on a warm up, the little “OKC” patch, their three letter abbreviation used on tv, the valentines day jersey, and, most importantly, their name, disgusts me when it comes to the hornets. they are the NEW ORLEANS hornets. they’ve just been relocated due to tragedy. its really annoying.

The NC State baseball team unveiled their new shoe deal with New Balance over the weekend. Friday & Sunday they went with white cleats and Saturday they sported red cleats. Also note, that they wore a white hat w/ red bill on Friday & Sunday and a solid red hat on Saturday. The Friday unis are very reminiscent of the Atlanta Braves with the piping around the belt loops.

The “ice cream” hats for LSU baseball are only going to worn on saturdays, and i believe only saturday home games.
friday games are white unis and our normal purple hats
saturdays- purple jerseys and white caps
sunday- gold jerseys and purple caps
midweek- pinstripes and purple caps
