I have a new gold standard for uniform dreck. I caught a french rugby match featuring Paris Stad Francais. Their uni’s are truly horrible : bad colour scheme, unnecessary piping, and adds all over the place.
Yesterday’s Pirate fans can take some solace that they were not born in Paris.

Here’s a pretty late entry to Paul’s list of sailor-cap wearing college mascots.
Back before “Hokies” really took off as the knickname for the university, Virginia Tech was known as the Home of the Fighting Gobblers. (Back in the day VT even had an actual, real life Gobbler walking around the football field.) Well, there used to be this scoreboard with a cap-wearing Gobbler head that would gobble whenever the home team scored.
BTW, that photo is from 1972, back when Virginia Tech wore the Commonwealth of Virginia-TECH helmets (sans Eastern Shore). I always liked geographically-oriented logos like that.

this board has been too whiny lately. I think the all star NBA jerseys look really sharp. I think the patches give the warmups a letterman’s jacket feel. The Vegas themed card suits make it even more cool.
#12 by B Wach$ on 01.28.07 1:16 pm |
The cards suits look kinda tacky, but the idea is in the right place. And with so many players with different numbers of patches, it just doesn’t look uniform.
#13 by Matt B on 01.28.07 1:27 pm |
This might be a little heretical, but I’d like to see college hoops teams switch to wearing colors at home. There’s often an emphasis on the crowd wearing the school’s primary color (Grateful Red, Orange Crush, etc) which is great, except that the team the crowd is cheering for is clad in white. Last night OSU had the White Out going vs MI State, which was nice except that (1) white could represent ANY home team and (2) white isn’t even one of OSU’s colors. I suppose a Gray Out wouldn’t have worked as well.
Anyhoo, the teevee is showing UVA at Clemson. the fans are dressed in orange (though not overwhelmingly), and so are the visitors.
That said, I think the NHL move to colored home unis was a shameless grab for merch sales.

I LOVE the warmups and really dig the “East” “West” script on the jerseys. I had forgotten the game was in Las Vegas and when I saw the unis I immediately thought “VEGAS!”.
I dislike the back of the unis with the name under the number, and the colored backpiece. Also, I dislike the stripes down the side but for different reasons. I usually like the adidas stripes and think it’s more classic than logo creep, but on the All Star unis it’s way too busy.

The University of Tulsa men’s basketball team wore 1980 throwbacks last night when they inducted Nolan Richardson into the TU Athletic Hall of Fame. One of the more interesting, to me, parts of the uniform is the blue and white “cloud” pattern on the side panels of the jersey and shorts. It really works with the team name “Golden Hurricane”.
There are several really great shots of the uniforms, and a few other uni-related pics at this link:

Gotta love that Carroll Dawson is still sporting the same old man, thick framed glasses that he’s been wearing since the 1980s. Now that’s tradition.
Someone asked how McGrady was elected to the ASG ahead of Nash and Kobe? It’s the same reason that Yao was elected (even though he’s been injured since mid December and had already said before voting ended that he wouldn’t play if elected) and Shaq was elected (even though he’s barely played): it’s a popularity contest.
McGrady happens to be a pretty likeable guy (he’s never been accused of what Kobe did or didn’t do in Colorado a couple of years ago) and he’s a somewhat flashier player than Nash (this is arbitrary, I’ll concede). It’s not as though Tracy is having a bad year either. Yes Nash probably deserved it more, but the ASG is about popularity amongst the fans and not stats.
And to make this uni related, I really like the All Star duds this year. Given that the game is being played in Vegas, the league could have very easily gone over the top with the uniforms, but instead kept them simple but cool. Sometimes restraint is a good thing.
#27 by Patrick on 01.28.07 2:59 pm |
Tracy McGrady gets into the All Star Game for the same reason that Yao Ming gets elected. The large number of votes that come from China help any player for the Rockets get into the game. The same thing happened a few years ago when Steve Francis was elected as a starter, now that he doesn’t play with Yao he doesn’t receive the help of the China vote. All Star voting is for the fans and the fans get to see whoever they want.

As for the NBA all-star stuff, i love the uniforms and the varsity jacket feel of the warmups. It’s the best that the NBA has done in a while for the all-star game. It’s cool that they have a Stardust theme on the shorts in the same time that the Stardust Hotel is getting demolished…I see it as a nice little tribute.

It wouldn’t be as obvious, but instead of a patch for each appearance, how about a playing card on each sleeve with the value equaling the number of appearences? If this is your second game you get a 2. seven = 7. It gets a little tricky after 10, but if you did Jack = 11, Queen = 12, and King = 13, it would be OK. No one has more than 13, do they?

#35 by BurghFan on 01.28.07 4:02 pm |
I’ve figured out exactly what bothers me about the red Pirates jerseys, and it’s the same thing that bothers me about so many of the black alternates: it’s not one of the team’s colors. When I see a two-second clip of onfield action, I can usually figure out what teams are involved. But when the Royals are wearing black, or the Pirates are in red, it’s much harder, because it’s not a color I associate with the team. (New uniforms when a team changes its color scheme are different from adding an alternate in a “new” color while leaving the regular uniforms essentially the same.)
Obviously, there’s an aesthetic component on top of this. A jersey can be beautiful or ugly whether or not it uses the proper team colors, but even a beautiful one is wrong when it doesn’t fit the team’s look/brand.
This touches on #31, where the sadness isn’t that Nike beat adidas, or if adidas had beaten Nike, but that adidas and Nike beat Gonzalez and Federer.

There’s something to what you say. It’s very disconcerting when, say, the blue on a helmet doesn’t match the blue on the rest of the uniform. And, yes, the Cowboys are major offenders when it comes to choosing and sticking with a particular shade. Over the years their blue has yawed from (what to me is) a dark Columbia to a royal to a navy and to a [what on earth?]. But those Dallas owners have always had more money than a sense of style and class. :(

A lot of teams struggled matching the helmets to the jerseys. The Vikings bothered me the most, if only because the purple on the helmet was such a lousy color. Also in that NY Post article I was surprised that no NFC north division teams were mentioned. Aren’t the Bears’ “C”, Green Bay “G”, Lions’ lion and Vikings’ horns just as iconic if not more so than the Giants’ NY? Also not mentioned: the Rams’ horns, the Steelers’ steel logo (bonus for only putting it on one side of the helmet) and the Eagles’ wings.

Here’s a football card of Cleveland Rams QB/HB Parker Hall. It was obviously a B&W picture that had been color-tinted. But it supports the idea that at least the pants were “yellow”-gold. Essentially the same colors that the Rams had all of their time in LA and up through the Super Bowl year in St. Louis.

I once saw a color poster or media guide on EBAY showing the early Cleveland Rams having Maroon and Yellow/Gold as their colors.
Also, I’ve read on more than one occasion that the LA Rams were discouraged from wearing their Yellow/gold jerseys by the NFL in the late 1950’s because the television audiences (with the broadcasts in black & white) could not easily tell the teams apart
