Sheffield United had to put a midfielder in goal today after their keeper was injured against Arsenal. Phil Jagielka is pretty much the Blades' Emergency Goalkeeping Hologram these days... just surprising he doesn't have his own goalkeeper shirt with a 6 yet.
Do you happen to know why the NFL followed the AFL's lead and started putting names on the backs of all jerseys after the merger in 1970.

Also, and this may be a bit obscure, but did ANY NFL team have names on the backs of jerseys before the merger?
The NFL did it because of television. I could be wrong, but I don't think any NFL teams did it pre-merger.

Re Ben's question above: No NFL teams had names on their jerseys until 1970. It was one of the innovations introduced by the AFL in 1960. (I'm not sure if any colleges had had them before then; I seem to recall that Ohio State was the first to do so, but I don't remember when.) Anyway, one of the merger points was that the old NFL teams would add names.

Many other issues had to be resolved, of course. Three that come to mind:
     * Scoreboard clock became official, as in AFL.

     * 2-point conversion eliminated, as in NFL -- but reinstated later, of course.

     * NFL "The Duke" ball becomes official. (Early Super Bowls had each offense use its own league's ball, and the AFL ball was slightly slimmer.)

Probably more info than anyone needed....

I was reading about Chad Johnson's nameplate shenanigans and wondered the following: In the NFL, is it mandatory for a player to have their name on the back of their uniform? Seeing as the NFL has loosened up a bit as far as assigning uni numbers, if a player requested not to have their name on their jersey, would the request be honored?
No. NFL uni regulations call for every player to wear a nameplate.
Also, is it illegal for two players on the same team to switch jerseys during a game as a ruse to try and fool the opposing team?
Yes. A player's uni number must match the one under which he's listed on the roster.
Hey Paul, thanks for the info. Do you happen to know why the NFL followed the AFL's lead and started putting names on the backs of all jerseys after the merger in 1970.

I know nobody will see this because it's at the bottom of an open thread, but tonight I saw the Giants backup QB, Jared Lorenzen, for the first time.
