My family doesn’t celebrate Christmas (chosen people and all that…), but Uni Watch hedge fund analyst Jenny Strasburg and I had our own little Christmas celebration last Wednesday, before she had to fly home to spend the real holiday with her family. And even though I stayed away from the computer for most of the day, the specter of Uni Watch seemed to hover over me all day long.
We began by checking out the Design Triennial exhibit up at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. There was one entry that included a critique of corporate branding, including the Nike swoosh, so of course I enjoyed that. But there were also two entries that featured actual Nike products, including — get this — a purple Nike running suit. Jenny saw this before I did and tried to steer me away from it, but it was no use. After staring, transfixed, for about a minute, I vomited all over the display.
Okay, not really, but I wanted to.
The exhibition also included some work by a menswear designer named Thom Browne. I’d never heard of him before, but the little placard accompanying his display included the following quote from him: “I love uniforms. They make everything so easy.” And sure enough, his work features lots of stripes, piping (sometimes lots of piping!), even striped socks. I’d never wear any of this stuff, natch, but it was still cool to see uniform details seeping into haute couture.
From there we went down to the New York Public Library, where they had an exhibit on the history of “rakish” menswear. Lots of great stuff, as you can see here and here. But what really stopped me in my tracks was an illustration of a dude with one vertically striped pant leg, accompanied by the following caption, which I copied down on the spot:
As early as the Middle Ages, striped cloth had achieved a reputation as the “Devil’s Cloth.” Stripes were associated with deviance and criminality. Even after striped garments like hose had become socially fashionable and a hallmark of heraldry, the design evoked licentious connotations. Young Renaissance warriors (and civilians) wore their eye-catching stripes with bravado — knowing that their rakish appearance would test their society’s tolerance level.
Explains a lot about my preoccupations, no? (Maybe explains Sean Taylor, too.)
We eventually made our way back to Uni Watch HQ, where we cooked this into this, and then it was time for presents. Let’s just say Jenny knew who she was shopping for. Among other treats, here’s what I scored:
• Two pairs of striped socks.
• This book, published in 1952. It would be worthwhile for its cover photo alone, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Imagine my reaction, for example, when I saw the title of Chapter 7. There’s a fair amount of uni-centric text scattered throughout the book, including the following account of the players lining up to receive their uniforms:
Each boy stood patiently until he received his equipment. Then with a shrill yell he rushed over to the grassy part of the field, carefully laid down his pile, and hastily began pulling on the uniform on top of his T-shirt and pants. After checking the uniform for size, each boy carefully bagged the trousers in the approved big league manner. Then, with cap pulled down at a studiously careless angle, he fled for home.
Gotta like that.
• This book (see link at right), which features hundreds of New York Daily News photos from the golden age of New York baseball (including some taken just a few blocks from where I live). There are way too many amazing pics to go over here, so I’ll just showcase a few: Willie Mays and Monte Irvin co-owned a liquor store, and looked mighty sharp while running it; check out the great old logos on this TV camera; and here’s another reason why I’m proud to be a Brooklynite.
My good fortune continued the following day, when I had drinks with Uni Watch publicist Carrie Klein, who surprised me with this swell trinket (here’s a bottom view). Isn’t that nice? It has taken all my willpower and self-restraint to refrain from removing the little perforated hole-punch.
Two days after that, on Xmas Eve, I went over to my friends George and Scout’s place, where a small but festive crowd had gathered. We ate the Meal of the Seven Fishes (count ‘em: oysters, smelts, cod, some sort of little bait fish thingies [sorry, I forgot to snap the photo until they were almost all gone], mussels, angel hair pasta with whiting sauce, and scallops), and then my buddy Dave Herman (who last year got me a pair of New York Rangers socks) gave me the gift to end all gifts. Now, as some of you know, I’m am extreeeeeeemely fond of beef, pork, lamb, and the like. And of course I’m also fond of uniforms, and of a certain National League baseball team. All those things came together when Dave presented me with this. Yabba-dabba-do!
All in all, a swell holiday. Hope yours was, too. If you got any cool uni-related swag, feel free to send photos this-a-way.
Uni Watch News Ticker: A while back someone mentioned in the Comments section that Kirk McLean had the word “Weird” written on the underside of his skate, but photographic evidence was lacking — until now (with thanks to ESPN.com photo czar Sean Hintz for the blow-up inset). According to this page, the “Weird”-ness started when McLean “was deemed too ‘normal’ by the [Vancouver] team trainers,” so they added the inscription to his skate. … Speaking of goalie weirdness, check out the illustration of Marvin the Martian on Patrick Lalime’s stick. … Remember our discussion of target-like hockey jersey logos? That came to mind when I saw this photo of what Yutaka Fukufuji, now in the Kings’ organization, used to wear in Japan. … Here’s a rare non-Japanese contribution from Jeremy Brahm: “In 1998, Real Sociedad of the Spanish First Division, had a fan killed by neo-Nazis. So for one game, the team wore his name, A. Zabaleta, on the back of their uniforms as a tribute to him.” … Nice bit about the 49ers’ throwbacks here (with thanks to Chris Kaufman). … The January issue of Smithsonian magazine includes this photo, with the following caption: “According to team lore, the Harlem Globetrotters first take the court in January 1927. They are a road team in the Midwest — not New York — and the name promotes the players, who are black. Soon known for trick shots and comedy routines, they will bring basketball to new audiences in more than 100 countries. As for Harlem, the team finally plays there in ‘68.” … Totally cool auction items here, here, here, and here. … Another racer-backed women’s hoops school: Alabama State (as spotted by Richie Murray). … More archival college photos, this time courtesy of Steve Delaney, who writes: “I’m a student at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. I was looking through a PDF file today of our alumni magazine and saw some real photo gems. It’s a 44-page document and you’ll really want to focus on pages 18-23. In there you’ll find a photo of field hockey players from the early 1900s (apparently we had the second college field hockey team in the US). And in the early days, Hood had a tradition of giving blazers to deserving athletes (not unlike present day varsity jackets). You can see examples of those on pages 19 and 23.” They apparently gave out varsity sweaters, too. … Nice camera work by Brian Terreson who noticed that LaDainian Tomlinson had a rip just below his nameplate on Sunday. … Matt Leinart appears to have been shopping for maternity clothes. … Some logo creep is a lot more annoying than others. … According to this article, Browns WR Braylon Edwards “faces league fines for violating uniform code by wearing white shoes — covered partially with black tape — while his teammates wore black shoes, and two different colored gloves” in Sunday’s game against the Bucs (with thanks to Chris Marcinko). … Good article here about advertising on MLS jerseys.

One thing I’ve wondered about these Dallas Cowboys throwbacks….Why the hell aren’t they white? The Cowboys should ALWAYS wear white at home. It is a great NFL uni tradition. So why make blue throwbacks to wear in Texas Stadium?

Concerning the Cowboys’ “throwback” unis… count John Madden (who likes globs of mud on uniforms, by the way) among those who wish the ‘Boys would get rid of those blue throwbacks. According to Madden, “They don’t look like the Cowboys, and they haven’t played like ‘em today, either.”

My apologies if someone already commented on this, but in reference to Dallas’ throwbacks yesterday:
I thought they looked pretty sharp, with the exception of the fact that there seemed to be two different sock patterns. I don’t know if it was due to layering, but some players appeared to have a solid blue sock with a double white stripe, while others appeared to have white socks with a double blue stripe that transitioned into a blue upper sock. You can make out both styles here. There was no single “sock misfit”, as there seemed to be a healthy mix of both styles on the field at any time.
#36 by Patrick O'Donnell on 12.26.06 11:10 am |
The Cowboys should always wear those. Very classy. Much better than the current ones where it’s royal blue and black on the uni, and navy and silver on the helmet.
#37 by Eric G. on 12.26.06 11:16 am |
Not exactly uni-related, but I guess it could be for the content inside.
I got the New York Times’ 80-page commemorative paper on the Mets, which is pretty much a big summary of all the things the Mets have done.
I guess the reason it’s uni-related would be because of all the old photos.
#38 by Anthony Verna on 12.26.06 11:26 am |
Count me among those who didn’t like the Cowboys throwback jerseys.
The jerseys looked like something childish and amateur. (There was something about how the numbers were stitched on that didn’t seem professional.) The helmets were just. . . flat.
I don’t have a link, however, but I noticed that the nameplates were rounded on the throwbacks.

You knew I would chime in on this one! I agree with WVU Tom…as far as purple unis go, the Ravens by far have the best. As Tom said, the first couple of years were a bit rough, but now they are very clean if you ask me.
And to clarify, these are 3rd generation. When the team changed the helmet logo because of the lawsuit, they removed the bird from the sleeve and went with the shield logo.
#51 by ML on 12.26.06 12:44 pm |
I don’t have a picture, but TOwens was the sock misfit yesterday (in response to #35) — he had 3 stripes on one side and 1 on the other at several points during the game.
#52 by ML on 12.26.06 12:47 pm |
Also, I’m from Indianapolis and feel the entire reason the Colts can’t win in the playoffs is the Colts name. They should have given it back to Baltimore when Modell requested it (Jim Irsay evidentally asked for $35 million) and gone with a new name. Like the Browns, the Colts records should all be Baltimore.
Of course, now that the Ravens have had success on their own, I don’t think the Colts name will ever go back. Too bad.
In keeping with our racing theme (Pacers, Racers, Checkers), we could name them the… Indianapolis Pits.
#53 by DVG on 12.26.06 12:49 pm |
I found this when i was looking for post #49’s Chicago Bears socks. There are some amazing helmets on here, most of them being ones previously discussed in previous blogs. Check out the one fourth from the bottom, as I have never seen a logo like that before.
#54 by WVU Tom on 12.26.06 12:55 pm |
My mistake, I thought all those changes happed at the same time–but the are all definately improvements. I love the way the shield incorporates the unique Maryland flag into the team’s logo.
Of course, if you want an example of how not to wear purple, I think we all know where to look!
#55 by Original Jim on 12.26.06 12:58 pm |
From a symmetrical perspective, I think the logo creep fits better in the stripes than above it.
I think eventually the brands will go behind the collar. With the way sleeves are shrinking now, the logo creep will overtake any secondary logos or numbers there anyway.
Death to the anti-mayonnites!
#56 by WVU Tom on 12.26.06 12:59 pm |
I did notice that, but my comment was pointing out the fact that the entire team appeared to actually be wearing two different sock styles. It appeared to be an effect of layering.
#57 by Joe Hilseberg on 12.26.06 1:02 pm |
I couldn’t agree with you more. However, I think that a majority of Baltimore fans would agree that we would take back the Colts name and records in a second….or at least I would.
And when the Brown’s fans get over themselves and look at the facts, they will see how much of a class act Art Modell was for leaving the name despite how he was treated by the politicians in Cleveland, and that he should be in the HOF.

Hey, I’m 58th!
#59 by WVU Tom on 12.26.06 1:15 pm |
At this piont, I would want nothing to do with the Colts. Irsay is still one of the most hated men in Baltimore, and with the Ravens, baltimore fans are enjoying a new era of great football. In hindsight, sure it would have been great if Baltimore would have the idea to insist that the team name, logos and records belonged to the city–allowing a future team to use them (as Cleveland did), but as it stands now, the Colts name has forever been tainted since it left Charm City.
(Nothing against fans in Indy, but most of us who lived in Baltimore at the time of the move are still bitter about how the deal went down).

The Cleveland situation is not an easy one.
The city didn’t want to pay for a new stadium. What would the site be? Where would the money come from? The mayor at the time kept saying he didn’t want to build a football stadium, he wanted to put more money into schools. At first, he was applauded.
Then the Browns moved. Then the mayor was voted out. Then a new stadium was built in the same spot as the old stadium.
It’s complex, because the stand was taken at first. Modell - hall of fame? I can understand that, for he was a steward of the league. However, if he wanted the community to stand tall, I wonder if he would’ve moved the team.
Not an easy issue at all.
#63 by WVU Tom on 12.26.06 1:25 pm |
Browns fans have every right to be bitter, but at least the city of Cleveland was left with a much better deal than Baltimore was when the Colts left in 84.
(and just to relate this comment to the content on this site: Baltimore lost some great classic unis!)

Can’t agree with the spin on the Ravens’ numbers. Those are among the worst on any NFL uniform - way too busy.
The Bears, Texans, Chiefs, Steelers and Broncos have numbers that enhance the overall look of their respective jerseys.
Baltimore, Philly, Boston, Nashville, Atlanta, Tampa, San Diego, Miami, SF, Cincinnati and especially Jacksonvile have numbers that detract from the overall look. Other current NFL number styles are pretty much neutral.

Anybody have any good examples of teams that have logos of their mascot wearing their uniform, like the Dolphins (notice the “M” helmet) or the old Orioles cap?
Since that Miami Dolphins logo appears on their helmet, technically the dolphin should be wearing a helmet that has a dolphin wearing a helmet inside of a sun that has a dolphin wearing a helmet… and so on.
And the Oriole on the cap technically should be wearing a picture of an Oriole wearing a cap, etc.
Don’t think that I want the logos to be changed. I think they’re totally awesome. Just one of those quirky things.
#70 by Matt on 12.26.06 2:53 pm |
in Madden 07 the refs wear the black pants in all games not just the colder weather…
#71 by Original Jim on 12.26.06 3:03 pm |
Not quite.
The Ravens numbers are a modified form of the font Matrix, which was used by the Diamondbacks until the recently introduced uniforms.
The EPL teams’ numbers and letters are a modified form of Optima.
The England national team wears TheFA, a custom font used throughout various FA team graphics.
#72 by Joe Hilseberg on 12.26.06 3:07 pm |
Not quite the Ravens style, but close.
It must be because I look at them every day, but I think the Ravens number mesh perfectly with the uni and artwork of the team. Agree to disagree I guess.
#73 by DenverGregg on 12.26.06 3:08 pm |
The Man U numbers you linked are in a similar style, but (1) the “points” of the numbers (e.g. upper left on the 2) don’t thin out to a point like the Ravens’ do and (2) these are white and appear to be attached with simple dark thread, whereas the Ravens use white with a gold border and a black drop-shadow. That makes a big difference.
#74 by Joe Hilseberg on 12.26.06 3:13 pm |
Does anyone have a copy of Matrix font for a mac??? (not the movie font either) Would love to have that one. It’s similar to the font “Latin” as well, but Latin isn’t as versatile.

I’ve got it on Wii and they wear the white knickers only in cold-weather cities. But I’ve noticed the weather doesn’t really have any affect on it as a game in Buffalo in week 3 had them in the pants.
#76 by ML on 12.26.06 3:40 pm |
On Xbox (not 360), their white “non-cold” knickers have a big fat black stripe on them. In almost any cold game, they will wear the black trousers with the heavy white stripe.
As far as Baltimore goes… when Irsay dies, perhaps a wrong can be righted. I’m sitting here in my Reggie Wayne jersey typing this, so I’m not exactly anti-Indy, but love the way the city of Cleveland got to keep their name. Peyton shouldn’t be breaking Unitas records, McNair should be. Oh wait… sorry… maybe your next QB. ;)

Wow, I actually got on the main Uniwatch blog. Cool, too bad the 49ers lost in the throwbacks 23-20 (I didn’t count that faux field goal).
#78 by Shane on 12.26.06 4:11 pm |
Not quite, mi amigo. I noticed it when I got my first United jersey. The numbers are actually dual-layered for a slight drop shadow effect. Also, they’re heat applied, rather than being sewn on.
Here’s a quick lesson on EPL lettering for everyone.
All EPL teams wear the same font style for lettering and numbering. This isn’t exactly commonplace, but other leagues do the same thing (the Scottish Premier League, France’s Ligue 1, and MLS all use the exact same font). Also note that the EPL logo appears at the bottom of every number.
Most teams in the EPL either wear black numbers on white, or the other way around. However, there are a few abnormalities.
Blackburn Rovers wear red on white at home (when did they sign Condi Rice?!), as do Liverpool on the road.
Newcastle United wear gold on white both home and away (such a terrible shirt), while Chelsea’s away shirt features blue and white numbering.

Agreed. I always felt the 49ers update was completely pointless; especially with all of that black and ugly blockshadows. The old look is clean. There’s no need to put gold on the jersey when it’s so prominent on the helmet & pants.

Horizontal Stripes (2007 World Juniors)
Vertical Stripes (2006 Olympics)

I’ll repost if I find any photographic evidence, but as a Baltimore area native I can attest to the fact that on some larger versions of the old Oriole bird logo you could definately see the oriole bird on his cap (which would techically have the bird on his cap, and so on to infinity).

The one thing about the throwbacks that I don’t like is the color of the pants and the striping. The stripe is way too wide and exactly what color are those pants? I much perfer the gold pants from the new set. Just ditch the blackâ„¢ and use a narrow version of the throwback stripe.

Ah, Banker Bill! Glad to see your humor return. Did you get the jersey you wanted for Xmas?
Oh, and death to mayonnaise. Mustard is much better. Hm. That was a bit alliterative. So is the fact that I am morose today. Also lugubrious, but that isn’t alliterative.
Oh, and the Vikes. I will grant that their unis are awful this year (no sugarcoating the truth), but I still think the old ones were pretty magnificent.

Paul has posted pics before showing the various stripe widths the niners have had. I wanna say that the “stripes on steroids” is from the Montana glory days. at any rate, the unis are historically accurate but they could have picked a narrower stripe to copy.

No - I got a “work” uni (dress shirt and tie) but no new hockey jerseys. That’s OK though….
Saw the Wild! win in the shootout the other day, and the red jerseys are growing on me…Especially with the Green helmets - they looked very festive.
Best sign at a hockey game (credit espn.com) - seen at a Penguins game - a girl held up a sign that said “SIDNEY..PUT IT IN MY 5 HOLE”.

Ah, well. Work clothes are more useful, I guess. I love the Wild!’s alternates though I detest Christmas. I have no idea why, but the red-and-green just tickles me.
Forgive my ignorance, but why 5 hole? Why not just hole?

The 5 hole is the hole between the goalies legs.

Just realized how bad that sounded…the 5 hole is the triangle of space between the ice and the goalie’s two legs.

Funny! But why 5 specifically? Is he the fifth man? No. Is there a reason?
Teebz?
