Meanwhile: As I noted at the end of yesterday’s Uni Watch News Ticker, the Chiefs will presumably wear some sort of memorial tribute this weekend for team founder Lamar Hunt, who died on Wednesday. But Hunt’s passing has already provided some valuable uni-watchery, thanks to a memorial photo gallery that’s been posted on the Chiefs’ web site (first brought to my attention yesterday by reader Jacob Reed). Many of the pics feature great little uni-related details I’d never seen before. Check it out:
• We’ve all seen Hank Stram wearing this Chiefs logo blazer. But I’d never seen him wearing one with the team name spelled out.
• Even better: Dig the amazing team-branded blazers worn by Hunt and Bud Adams in this 1962 shot, back when the Chiefs were still the Dallas Texans. Looks like Adams might also be wearing an Oilers tie tack.
• Speaking of the Texans, dig this shot of Hunt and his young son, the latter wearing a Texans T-shirt. Love to know what Goodwill outlet that eventually got donated to.
• Here’s something you don’t see anymore: a postgame celebration with one of the players (Sherrill Headrick, in this case) smoking a cigarette.
• Here’s Hunt presenting the NFL Man of the Year Award to Derrick Thomas in 1993. The uni detail that fascinates me here is the trophy itself: Like, when’s the last time you saw an NFL player wearing a poncho? Or maybe it’s supposed to be a superhero’s cape?
• How many NFL teams have uni-numbered ski caps?
• Check out Chiefs prexy Carl Peterson in this shot: He’s got the “58″ button (a memorial for Derrick Thomas), the red-white-blue Chiefs ribbon (not sure what that’s for — the photo isn’t dated, but Thomas died in 2000, so the ribbon probably isn’t 9/11-related), and it looks like there’s a number on his tie (no idea).
• And in an age when Reebok dresses the coaches wear those ridiculous polo shirt designs, the elemental simplicity of this is quite refreshing.

Helmet Raffle Update: Speaking of helmets, I got a note yesterday from Pete Ellingsworth, winner of our Gridiron Memories helmet raffle. He says he’s taking the 1976-72 Indiana helmet — “I love the simple ‘I’ and stripes on the crimson
helmet,” he writes. “Plus I’m from Indiana (never mind the fact that I now reside in Burbank, California). I just wish IU would stop wearing those red on red unis!” Gotta love a contest winner who works a uni critique into his victory speech. Congrats, Pete!

Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of NFL coaches’ polos, check out the swash-”S” at the end of the insignia on Vince Lombardi’s shirt (with thanks to Robert Erdtmann). … An Orioles prole has been caught stealing team items, including jerseys and jackets, and selling them on eBay (as spotted on the police blotter by Matt French). … Turns out Daisuke Matsuzaka was fated to join the Red Sox all along — check out the stirrups he wore in high school (good catch by Richard Stover). … Remember Joe Pavelski’s upside-down Reebok logo, which first showed up about two weeks ago? Pavelski’s childhood friend and Uni Watch reader John Okray asked him about it on Wednesday. “He didn’t even realize it,” Okray reports. “He said, ‘I heard something about that. I forgot to look for it last night before I put my jersey on. I hadn’t noticed until somebody said something to me about it.’ Is it possible players aren’t as obsessed with their jerseys as we are? Another Chelsea High School uni update, because I can:
The basketball team got new unis this year. Here’s another look. Those are the home whites; I haven’t yet seen the away blues (well, I assume they’re blue).
Here’s a question: in the first one, an S is visible on the shorts. I assume that’s a manufacturer’s logo, but I don’t recognize it. Whose is it?
Also, Chelsea’s very talented big man graduated, and they didn’t have a lot of size to replace him, so they’ve turned into a small, fast team. With that in mind, they’ve adopted a Top Gun-inspired theme this year (with the slogan “The need for speed”), including a Top Gun-inspired Chelsea Basketball logo on the warmups (I’ll get a shot of that tonight). Because of that theme, in an amusing development, the student section has taken to wearing aviator sunglasses.
I keep hoping to see the players wearing aviators during warmups or something.

D. Wade is in no way honoring adidas with that three-stripe wave in his hair; that is a common hair style for many players. He is sponsored by Converse, a subsidary of Nike, so that is in no way true.

Re: the Seahawks jerseys, I don’t think the stripes are missing. If you compare sleeve lengths on Branch’s jersey with Hasselbeck’s, you can see that Branch’s sleeve ends just below the two logos, while Hasselbeck’s is much longer, and the material seems bunched up. It looks like Branch rolled the insides of his sleeves up.
Burleson, similar detail: he’s wearing two sleeves. One ends just under the Hawk logo, and is rolled up; the other is from an undershirt. The two sleeves are slightly different colors, and as you look to the front of Burleson’s jersey, you can see the difference a little bit more clearly. Again, it looks like he tucked that part of his sleeve up; it would stay, since looking at most players’ sleeves, the snot strip is elastic.

For every photo I find of Browns players wearing the sideline poncho/overcoat, I cannot find one that shows the backside. Interestingly, when the Browns use the exact same design they’ve had on them from at least the 1960s with the Brownie on the back with the arched “Browns” above him.
Can anyone help?

This reminds me- is there any way there could be some kind of list to determine the best and worst looking professional sports cities in North America? All major sports franchises would be included and averaged into the city’s grade. For example, Detroit may get high marks for the Tigers and Red Wings, but may be brought down by the Lions and their black unis.
This may be fairly time consuming, but I think it would be interesting stuff.

That player is called the “libero,” which means “free” in Italian. The libero is essentially a defensive specialist and has certain limitations depending on the level of play (NCAA or international). The jersey is used because the libero can switch for any backrow player without counting against the sub limitations and need not notify the ref.

That player is the “libero”… a special position that remains on the “back line” throughout the game, regardless of the regular rotation. (”Libero” means “free” in some language with which I’m not familiar.)

The NBA’s new ball, supposedly headed for the unemployment line, will be able to continue moonlighting in Japan (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). …
In deference to the NBA, the new ball was tested all last year in the DLeague. Although it seems the League did not do their homework, the new design was actually put into play way in advance.

The funny thing about Hunt’s son wearing that Texans T-shirt… the fact that he’s in the Chiefs’ locker room! Look on the floor behind his dad, you can see a helmet with the arrowheads on the side, not a Texans helmet.
Looks like the poor kid didn’t get a new T-shirt during the team move… either that or he was the first kid to think that retro T-shirts were cool.

My apologies if someone already brought this up-
ESPN Page2 article on voting mishaps in sports. Not a uni-related article, per se, until you reach the last entry, where it states that in 2003 the Denver Broncos reached the finals against Michigan in a poll for the best unifoms in sports. Again this was 2003, so I’m assuming this was refering to the latest version of the Broncos unis (although there may have been throwback categories?). If it is the current unis in question, how could you not suspect voter fraud!?!
It kills me when teams make drastic uniform changes to go from a great classic look to something that could only have been generated by faulty market research and overthinking (Broncos, Bills, Bengals, etc.) Someone definately needs to step back and say, “wait a minute, are these good, or stupid?”

Re the ‘Hawks “neon snot stripe,” I’m probably in the minority, but it’s the only redeeming element in Seattle’s dull & boring look. Ordinarily I’d be against neon green anything, but here it’s a spark of life on an otherwise depressing color palette.
And as for numbered ski caps, I reported John Stocco of the Badgers wearing one here on the boards a little while back. Don’t remember which game — Iowa? — he was on the sidelines injured that week.

Today’s headline was how I always remembered Lamar Hunt. I could not believe on a late afternoon flight from Columbus, OH to Dallas, TX in July 1998 sitting in our row was Mr. Hunt - in coach. One of the wealthiest men in the world flying coach. He was engaging and polite during the flight, and genuinely interested in my business, along with sharing his business that day in Columbus for the soccer team - the Crew.

It is funny that this topic got brought up today. I just finished a short piece on “Brownie the Elf” for Paul today that was inspired by the appearance of the elf on the back of the sideline parkas of the Browns this year.

The Brownie Elf must have fallen out of favor with the resurgence of the new Browns in 1999, as it was probably overlooked by the corporate capitalization of the “Dawg Pound” name. Half of all merchandise in the late 90s, early 2000s had the bullshit Dawg Pound logos.
Now, good luck finding either Dawg Pound logo on any merchandise other than the clearance rack. You’ll also note that a lot more Browns merchandise now includes Brownie, which I like.
One of my favorite characterizations of the Brownie is used on a Mitchell & Ness jacket. Feel free to send it my way if anyone has the $400+ laying around.

Jeff Bagwell retired officially today. I would have loved to see him get to 500 HR’s, but his shoulder just wouldn’t allow him to play anymore. Anyway, I was thinking about it and as great as Bagwell is (and he’s a really nice guy, he came and signed autographs at my elementary school when he was in his rookie season…I was in second grade at the time), he may be one of the originators of the pajama pants look in baseball.

I don’t know, I think Chicago gets a few points docked due to the Bears sporting the all navy blue look a couple times over the past three or four years. And the Cubs get points off for overusing the ridiculous blue jersey (which admittedly is Zambrano’s doing, apparently he’s allergic to pin stripes).

Really, if you’re going to dock points for the Bears’ occasional monochromatic lapse or the Lions’ alternate jerseys, then you’re going to have to dock more points for the Pats’ year-round football unis. The comparison to the old just makes the error more egregious.
So I don’t think Bostom is such a clear winner.

I remember those cold weather parkas being broken out all the time when I went to the Browns games in the early 80’s. They were brown with “Browns” in block lettering on the back. Municiple stadium, being right next to the lake was a cold, cold place (I remember freezing my butt off during an Indians game in July - that wind was brutal).
Speaking of the Browns… Now I think their Unis are about as good as it gets. I loved the tweaks with the reverting back to the gray masks and the sholder stripes going back to just white and orange.
But why does it seem like uni modification is always two steps forward and then two steps back? I loathe that they got rid of the stripes on the socks, and with they’d do awaay with the comemorative patches (the AL patch on the sleeve and the huge 60 year patch on the front).
If they could remove the patches, bring back the sock stripes from last year, and move the TV numbers off the shoulders and onto the helmets (or just get rid of them completely), it’d be uni nirvana.

Random Browns thoughts…
As far as the Browns go, it seemed like when they first started, Policy and crew wanted to establish their own identity and separate themselves from the past. It took many, many years into Browns 2.0 for them to openly embrace the past, and has just been happening in recent, post-Policy years.
A few marks they retired, was this:

I thought Brownie more fell out of favor in the Modell years, and didnt get much face time in Browns 2.0 until the past few years.

They both suck! The 9′ers current logo has too many ovals, the red is too burgundy and the drop shadow unnecessary! They need to go back to the 80’s versions…which I have heard rumors that Mike Nolan is trying to do!

I’ll grant that Denver’s not the best uni city, but it’s way better than (at a minimum): Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Jacksonvillage . . . .
Chicago’s probably best-dressed for a city with all four major pro sports (the Bears, White Sox, Black Hawks and Fire all at or near the top of their respective leagues).
In my book, DC comes out worst for cities that have MLB, NFL, NHL and MLS, but they’re not very close to the bottom in either NFL or MLS.
Miami and Atlanta have a tough battle for worst-dressed city if you skip MLS. The Braves, other than the red jersey, have looked good for 20 years, but the new Falcons unis are atrocious enough to make up for it. The Thrashers and (hockey) Panthers both look teams from a bad made-for-TV movie. The Dolphins’ combo of teal and drop-shadows is visual ipecac. The Marlins kept the teal mistake going. I think Miami gets the nod.
Orange County should get a most-improved award for the Ducks recent change and the Angels’ replacement of one of the worst uni’s ever with a decent one.
Oh yeah, the Eagles should bring back the look ofSuper Bowl XV.
