Meanwhile: Did the Astros sign Carlos Lee to a $100 million contract and then give him someone else’s ill-fitting jersey when introducing him to the media? Kevin Gee thinks so. Here’s why:
Check out Friday’s press conference for Carlos Lee and Woody Williams. Upon accepting his jersey, No. 45, Lee looks at the tag and says something to GM Tim Purpura. I�m pretty sure it was something like, �This ain�t going to fit,� because he couldn�t get it to button up all the way. [He tries to keep it closed with the jersey's Velcro patch, but that pops open about 20 seconds later. -- PL] When presented with his cap, he puts it on and says, �We got this one right.” Even after sitting back down next to Woody Williams, he still appears to be fussing with the jersey and talking to Woody about it.
My screen grabs don’t do justice to the absurdity of this sequence. So why was Lee’s jersey so snug? Again, Kevin Gee: “The last Astros player to wear No. 45 was Mike Gallo. He’s 6′0″, 175 pounds; Lee is 6′2″, 240 pounds.” Did the ‘Stros really just grab a Gallo jersey and swap the name on the back for Lee’s press conference? Are they really paying a guy $100 million but too cheap to spring for a new jersey? Is anyone losing his job over the little snafu? Stay tuned.

Interesting bit about the Wisconsin “W” copyright. I have never been a fan of the popular practice of high-schools mimicing college or professional logos (while usually just changing the color scheme), and it seems to happen a lot.
I was really interested in this article though, because last year while visiting back home I attended a football game at my old high school — whose name I won’t mention to prevent being a “whistle-blower”, but my home town begins with the letter “W”. I was disappointed because their old, very original “W” logo, had been replaced with one that basically mimiced the Wisconsin “W”. With any luck, this new devolopement will prompt school officals to revert back to the old one.

Did anyone else think its somewhat ironic that in the same post talking about the Wisconsin trademark battle, that the pictures of Jeannette High’s helmets shows an exact copy of KU’s Jayhawk, except different coloring?
I don’t have any pictures, but during the Texas-Texas A&M game, on tv you could see that there were quite a few A&M players who’s “aTm” helmet decal was peeling off.

I can see where Winsconsin wouldn’t want High schools copying their logo. As for the Kansas Jayhawk, there is so much history behind it and the artist was a KU alum, it seriously should not be used by Jeanette or any other high school.
Can you imagine if they had the Jeanette Tarheels?
Or the Jeanette Cardinal? How about the Jeanette Boilermakers or Hoosiers? JeanetteBuckeyes?

That rule the Bulls have about not wearing headbands is kind of silly, I won’t lie. But Big Ben needs to follow his teams rules. Maybe he should worry more about scoring points or grabbing rebounds rather than what the the top of his head looks like.

Wisconsin “W” ripoffs extend all the way down south to Texas. It was pretty funny going to high school games such as my old high school, the Westwood Warriors vs. The McNeil Mavericks. Both blatent ripoffs of Wisconsin (with added indian feathers) and the Denver Broncos with different colors.
Then there is my old middle school that uses one of the most ripped off logos ever.

I personally do not see the big deal with the use of the logos by high school teams. In NY there are many high school teams that I know of that use another teams logo. Geneva High School uses the exact same helmet as the University of Georgia, and Guilderland uses the “G” that is used by Georgia, Grambling, and most notably the Green Packers. The Florida State Spear logo is used by Peru, Ravena, and Stillwater. Ballston Spa uses the Clemson Claw design, Burnt Hills uses the Michigan State Spartan (also only have logo on one side like the Steelers), and Columbia has the exact same helmet as UCONN. So to make sure that no other school uses a logo is absurd. There are far too many teams that do so to completely eliminate the imitation.

That’s a fun story with Brady and Vrabel. Carson Palmer and Tab Perry had a similar bet last season where Tab, from UCLA, had to wear Carson’s #3 USC jersey after the Trojans beat the Bruins.
This has probably been mentioned by Paul, or somebody else here, but why did the Colts switch to grey facemasks? Does it have something to do with the color affecting vision, was it aesthetics, or did they just need to add a third color for merchandising reasons? The blue looked better.

I understand that the players want to look respectful and wear a tie, but could we compromise on a suitcoat over a turtleneck or some other shirt that will not look dumb for the rest of the press conference? Paul is there legally a difference between a logo and just a letter? Because the “w” on the Wisconsin helmet is slanted it counts as a picture not a letter? I would find it hard to believe somebody could copywrite a letter (like the connecticut C, its a block letter c).

Instead of suing the schools who use their W, Wisonsin ought to heavily recruit them. Good athletes out of those high schools might be encouraged to enroll at Wisconsin if they get to wear a logo or color scheme or mascot they are familiar with.

It looks like Rafael Little is wearing a compression sleeve on his leg, not an attempt to imitate any nike-type sleeves on his leg. You can clearly see the separation between his compression shorts and the area around his knee since the pants, compression shorts and sleeve are all white. He probably has shin splints and is just trying to alleviate the pain.

Nice article about the eye black, Paul. You forgot to mention one of the most egregious abusers of eye black- John Randle. He used to cover half his face with eye black. I think he must have been inspired from a few too many viewings of “Any Given Sunday”. I’m pretty sure the NFL started to fine players who were covering more than their cheeks with the stuff because of him too.

Riddell has the on field licensing agreement with the NFL so that only their company name can appear on NFL helmets. It’s the same reason that all uniforms and sideline apparel are made my Reebok. The NFL doesn’t allow other logos on the field other than those manufacturers with whom the league has an on field licensing agreement.

Regarding the trademarking of letters, Michigan State and Syracuse just settled a argument over the “Block S” From what I understand, MSU has the BLOCK S trademarked in every color known. A year or so back, Syracuse tried to do a block S in orange and blue but MSU filed suit. As a result, Syracuse now uses a Block S with “Syracuse” over top.

Maybe I missed it but Paul, I find it odd that you’d let Espn get away with using A flawed uniform for its Uni Watch logo
It has
a) ugly wide shoulders for a basketball jersey
b) strange sublimated pinstripes
c) different fonts for UNI and WATCH
d) white and black on the arm trim on the right side, but only black trim on the left side.
All in all it’s a very flawed jersey for a column about jerseys.

That trademark site is great. The Washington Capitals trademarked a logo thats now dead, but they never used. The Florida Panthers have their logo trademarked in Spanish, the Carolina Hurricanes have some alternate logos (now dead) that were TM’d, the “Orlando Devil Rays” is trademarked by the TB group, and theres probably a ton more out there. Very cool. Perhaps Paul could do a whole UW blog on never used trademarked logos!

My old high school, Lodi, uses the Rams alternate logo and the Broncos stripe on their helmet.
While their opponent, Lenape Valley, is using the old Patriots logo.

I remember someone mentioning that Florida State gives out “Academics” tomahawks but it was very hard to distinguish them from the other tomahawks. But while watching the UF-FSU game Saturday, I thought I saw a few tomahawks with different looking handles on them. You can definitely see some differences here.

The Bears player probably had the logo torn or had it come loose during the game and thus it was removed.
The Vikings player probably had white socks on, just like the other player in the pic, but has his ankle spatted with black tape, which would cover the white sock.

I can be watching a game, say, the Vikes-Cards, perfectly content to see my boys getting some offense going when wham! I am struck anew by how stupid the new unis are. {Preach it, Minna}. For the rest of the game, all I can do is think about the travesty that is the Viking uniform. I need help!

Look assjack, you’re being paid $60,000,000 over 5 years, so I think you can survive not being allowed to wear a headband. Shut up and start scoring some fucking points. And as for Lucas’s comment that headbands prevent sweat from getting in your eyes, please. The only way to prevent that would be to stitch or staple the eyelids shut or wear the headband so low that it covers your eyes.

wow! what a holiday. i havent been keeping up with the blog like usual due to the “holiday bender” TM. this is different than the “sunday bender” TM, however the “holiday bender” TM can take place on a sunday in which you have an overlap of “benders”. in other words, ive been drinking since last tuesday…
anyway, in seeing all of the info on trademarking, i noticed, that the term “gets it” had a TM behind it. it looks like luk followed the steps of pat riley “three-pete” and john calipari “refuse to lose” in trademarking a saying.
i guess there will be new gear like mugs and mouse pads that say “i get it!” with the uniwatch logo beneath it…

This may be stating the already-seen, but over recent years and trips to Michigan Basketball games, I’ve noticed that sometimes Lester Abram, and many opponents have uber nike logos on their socks. They have two and sometimes three logos (from three different socks/braces) visible at a time on the back of their legs. Somewhat disturbing, sorry for no photo evidence, but I think it has been witnessed before.

Kind of relating to the ESPN article: During the Giants Game, Devin Hester of the Bears was wearing one long black stripe of tape, with smaller white stripes running vertically through the sticker. It was clearly visible on most shots of him before he returned punts and on the sideline after the FG return for a TD. Did anyone Tivo this game, and if so, can you get a screen shot? I cant find any pictures where his face is visible.

I’ve never been a big fan of Menominee’s look, but coming from a school that wears purple I can’t say too much. Our old unis were cheap ripoffs of the old purple/gold Vikings unis, and I liked them better than what we have now, but since I’m defending purple here, I’ll just stop now.

First, I don’t have pictures of the varsity, but here are the JV unis for the Lincoln Railsplitters.
As you requested, the Ann Arbor Pioneer Pioneers — home and away.
The Dexter Dreadnaughts — cool name with a cartoony muscular ship as a logo. Though they tend to call themselves the Dreads, which makes them sound a bit like a hairstyle.
The Saline Hornets — the previously mentioned blueberry home and away.
The Adrian Maples (away).
The Tecumseh Indians (home) — perhaps Minna’s favorite SEC team.
The Bedford Kicking Mules (home).
And my own team, the blandly-named Chelsea Bulldogs: home, away, and short-lived all-whites.
The Huron River Rats are set to join the SEC next year, and the still-unnamed (and not yet completed) third Ann Arbor school will also join the conference. (Some are pushing for Schembechler High; I don’t see the city going for that.)
I think one of my favorite school names in Michigan was the Plymouth Rocks. Unfortunately, things changed, and now they’re the Canton Rocks, which doesn’t have the same ring.

They actually got written permission in the 60’s or 70’s from Charles Schultz to use the logo. Still have the letter framed at the school.

I don’t have any pictures, but during the Texas-Texas A&M game, on tv you could see that there were quite a few A&M players who’s “aTm†helmet decal was peeling off.
Those decals are very crappy. I received a set of decals directly from A+M a few years ago and they peel up on the edges. I don’t know how the majority stay on the helmets during games!

Just for the record, on the Native American team mascots, it’s generally not Native Americans who are offended by their use. It’s more typically white policy makers and PC watchdogs who take it upon themselves to decide for the rest of the world what is to be deemed offensive and incorrect.

It’s not that difficult really to change a team’s nickname, the Browns became the Crows, er Ravens. For specific tribes, e.g. the Seminoles, the Utes, etc. it can be uplifting.
Besides the Redskins uniform is ugly…they should use a darker red but I gues that would cause more protests. There absolutely is no reason why a high school, I’m talking to you, Tulsa Union, should ever use “Redskins!!! That is so disrespectful…

Back on topic…. I like the Burgandy over Gold that they wore for the 2003 70th anniversary season. White over Gold just looks ugly. But nothing will ever top the quinessential White over BUrundy Redskins.

For the record I would only be an advocate for a logo change – keep the name and colors. The logo is a bit offensive when combined with the name and an update would be a step towards PC without going too far (ie Washington Bullets become Wizards)It’s not like a logo retirement is the end of the world.
And I’d wait for Gibbs to go – for history’s sake.

He’s a punk with no class or manners, plain and simple.
His latest comments about the whole headband thing prove that.
Wallace said, “If you know the rules and break them, you expect to be punished. I can’t try to put myself above the team or anybody else and wear a headband like I did. I’m amn enough to take the punishment. But I’m not sorry.”
When asked why he did it Wallace said, “I just felt like wearing it.“
How in the world is that not putting yourself above your team and anyone else?
If Skiles has any balls he’ll bench Wallace until he learns his lesson and apologizes to the team and Skiles.

The Washington Redskins tried to activate a change last season and then started on a winning streak (here comes the white pants and jerseys) and so Dan gets all superstitious and decides to hold off. The change was sweet. Think black.
Next year is their 75th Anniversary so you’ll be seeing something to celebrate that big event.
Footnote: The NFL only allows a team to wear an anniversary uniform 3 times in a season, twice in the regular season and once in the pre-season, so it will only be a tease but all and all a good conversation topic for sports branding and uni blogs everywhere.

I hope and pray every day that the ‘Skins don’t go black. That would be a huge mistake, and about 8 years behind the black is cool wave that many teams in most sports, unfortunatly, rode. See Here , Here, and here for a few examples. Black Redskins uniforms would only further lock Dan in first place for the worst thing to ever happen to the Burgandy and Gold.
Footnote reply: If a team declares there “anniversary uniform” as there regular game unis, they can wear said uniform for the whole season. That is how they wore the retro styled ones in 8 regular season games in the 70′th season (7 home & 1 in Dallas; they wore White over Burgundy at home against Dallas because the cowboys are cursed in blue).
