This past weekend was a bonanza for alternate uniforms, including several making their inaugural appearances. Check it out:
• The Bobcats wore their new navy alts (additional views here and here), which I like quite a bit.
• The Nets unveiled their solid-red alts (also look here, here, and here). Now let’s hope they quietly retire them.
• The Jazz dressed in light blue. According to “Baby Blues” section of this article, several players thought the shorts lettering looked “like high school,” an assessment with which I agree. (Another note from that article: Robert Hyde, president of the team’s Fanzz merchandise stores [now there’s a brilliant store name…], is quoted thusly: “The NBA won’t let you use black anymore [for alternate jerseys].” First I’ve heard of that.)
• Maybe the prohibition on solid-black alternates explains why the Wizards have gone with their controversial two-tone alts, which made their debut over the weekend. I still like the stars and stripes, although I wouldn’t argue too hard with anyone who finds the whole thing a bit much. (Question: Notwithstanding last season’s Bulls-as-Stags throwbacks, when’s the last time an NBA team wore two-tone unis?)
• Notre Dame broke out the green jerseys (which I happen to love, so I’m running lots of additional pics here, here, here, here, and here).
• The Titans wore their light blue pants for the first time (additional pics here, here, and here). I prefer the navy pants, although I like the reference to the franchise’s old Love Ya Blue days.
• I’m not positive, but I think yesterday marked the first time the Rams have worn these white pants (which didn’t fare too well).
And that’s not counting the Eagles’ black jerseys, the Panthers’ blue jerseys, the Lakers’ home whites, or the Broncos’ blue pants, all of which are now reasonably familiar sights. “Uniform”? Apparently not.
While you were watching football…: Yesterday I accompanied a lively crew of folks from the very wonderful City Reliquary to the annual Rosendale Picklefest, where there was much munching of deep-fried pickles, among other nutritious options. The proceedings included music from an “authentic” German band, whose members were attired in traditional lederhosen. I had my photo taken with one of them, for reasons that I think will be obvious to most of you.
Our next stop was the excellent Century House Historical Society, where Uni Watch hedge fund analyst Jenny Strasburg alertly spotted photos of old women’s and men’s basketball uniforms hanging on one of the walls. Those stripes on the men’s jerseys are pretty wild — I’ve seen similar stripes used as side panels, but never quite like they’re used in this old photo. All of which goes to show that historical uni-related research can take place anywhere, even during a field trip to a pickle festival.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The Chargers’ Marcus McNeill is playing with two broken hands — which apparently makes it difficult for him to zip up his pants (über-thanks to Tim Walsh and Vince Vincenzo, both of whom submitted screen-grabs). … Interesting Boston College uni-numbering tradition explained here (scroll down to the “New jersey” section, and thanks to Dave Conley for the tip). … Michael Rich notes that Rutgers uses different helmet-numbering formats depending on which helmet design a player is wearing. … Good account of DeAngelo Williams’s super-shiny shoe soles in the middle of this Q&A page (with thanks to Ryan Campbell). Multiple sources report that Williams also wears the Univeristy of Memphis logo on his mouthguard, but if you can see it here, your eyesight is better than mine. … All that fuss, just for this? (And although you can’t see it in the photos, Robert Madel notes that Nolan was wearing white socks, which suggests that he still has a lot to learn about wearing a suit.) … Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard showed up at yesterday’s Eagles game wearing a pretty cool retro jacket. … In case you missed it in yesterday’s Comments section: Interesting note in the middle of this page regarding Jocelyn Thibault’s new mask (here’s his old one). … And here’s an article about the new NHL jerseys (although it’s long on speculation and short on solid info). … This web site turned six months old last Friday. Thanks to everyone who’s helped make this a really great half-year — looking forward to more.

I’m with you on ND’s green jerseys. It makes them fit their name better, and looks really sharp with the gold. The same old color combinations get boring after a while, so it’s nice to see a team with a bit of variation.

Something of an aesthetic disaster on Mallorca yesterday. Orange vs Red — it’s clash-a-riffic!
Reminds me of a certain basketball game I’d hoped to strike from my databanks:
And this was the alternate jersey. Apparently, orange vs red is higher contrast than blue & red vs red. But I’m not so sure…Barcelona used to carry a third jersey to eliminate the possibility of something like this. Maybe La Liga should mandate that every team have a predominantly white jersey on hand?
Special note for the ladies: the Barca shop carries jerseys with a woman’s cut, and they’re not pink.

I’m with you Matt B on Barças orange, they should have a 3rd kit, but there’s no way it will ever be white. Their biggest rival is Real Madrid and wears all white, so no wearing of their colors. Plus Barcelona used to have white numbers on their shirts, they’ve changed them to yellow a few years back so the have absolutely no white on their kit.
They still need a 3rd kit, they’ve used
yellow,
gold,
silver and
green
as alternates, any one of them could do.

Is it just me or does the girl holding the basketball in the picture of the women’s team look possessed.
I don’t mind the Nets’ jerseys as much I guess. I usually oppose to anything Nets, being a Celtics fan, but those don’t make me quite as sick as i thought they would. Not like the Celtics alternate unis.
I don’t think I have to comment on the hideous Wizards unis but those Jazz alts are almost as bad, surprisingly. I usually support the light blue look. Like the Titans pulled off yesterday.

I have to ask…what’s with the purple and yellow striped ball?
That whole picture looks like a match between Barnum & Bailey’s and the Shriner circuses.

Gotta disagree about the Bobcats’ unis. They look so cheapy. Like you could grab that jersey out of a pile of discount goods at Jerry’s sport shop in Grandview, Missouri. Look at the neck on there. It like they tried to do one of those cheesy nike collar designs but didn’t have the money to put anything there.
This brings up a good point about what has happened to a lot of the jerseys in the NFL and NBA. They have tried to copy the innovation of Nike but have failed miserably. Did you see the Bills unis this weekend. How much of whatever can you fit on a uniform? Nothing even lines up.
How refreshing did the Browns unis look this weekend? And how good did #30 for Notre Dame look with his plain white long sleeve underneath? Nice work!

I’m fully aware of Barca’s relationship with their white-wearing rivals, that’s why I thought it might be a league mandate. And I hope the following might turn neutral uniwatchers against Real:
Purple logo-creep on the primary jersey
purple alt jersey
black away jersery

How do the Celtics’ alternates make you sick? It’s not that much of a variation of the norm. Yes, the thick stripe down the side of the shorts looks a little collegiate, but the black really isn’t that bad an accent color.

Another note on the Red Nets jerseys- since they were worn at home, the Blazers wore their white “home” unis that say Blazers on the front. Their road jerseys are usually black and say Portland….

The ball is Nike’s handiwork. There was a discussion about it wrt England’s league a little while back.

The purple and yellow ball is the “winter” ball used in the Premier league. They use a white and red ball through October I think. From what I understand it has to do with being able to see the ball in winter weather.

I was watching the World Series of Poker last night, and the commentator made a fun observation. One young player wasn’t doing all that well, and he said “Maybe if he would turn his hat so that the brim faced forward and not sideways he’d play a little better.”
Now we just need to get all baseball announcers to feel say the same thing, and maybe we can get MLB to ban the sideways hat thing!

I really liked the Titans’ light blue pants. I think it brings together the whole uni much better than the navy pants, because it goes with the light blue shoulder panel quite nicely. I think they’d do well to keep the look. the Titans’ certainly looked much better than their opponents with their ugly black alts.
the Rams’ white pants weren’t bad, but they were kind of bland compared to their gold pants. it just didn’t look right. (granted, I don’t like their “new” navy/metallic gold look. I much preferred the royal/yellow old school Eric Dickerson-era look, which really stood out - the new look doesn’t stand out to me at all.) and I’m also fairly certain it’s the first time they’ve ever been worn in a game.
brief note on the Lakers’ whites: I love how they only wear the whites on sundays. I like the idea of a “sunday jersey”.
the purple/yellow soccer ball: it’s been discussed here before. in Europe, they use a “winter ball” for the wintery months when snow is likely, so the ball is visible against the snow, unlike the traditional white ball.
Bobcats’ navy alts: love them. very nice. and this coming from a big fan of orange.
Nets’ red alts: don’t really care either way.

Actually, I don’t mind the Nets’ all-reds. But the Dr. J red/white/blues are hard to beat.
Those Wizards jerseys are just butt ugly. It’s not because they’re two-tone, though that’s not so hot. They just look teh ghey.
I believe I’ve seen the Rams in those white pants before.
And ND’s greens are cool when used in moderation.

As much as I loathe Notre Dame, I really enjoy their alternate unis. They have it down on how to break out the alt.: if you do have an alternate, wear it only once a year, if that.
Wizards alt: Thumbs up.
Jazz alt: Thumbs down.
Nets alt: Throw it in the Hudson.
Bobcats alt: The Bobcats need a new uniform, not a new alternate. Their colors (bright orange with gray and navy?), the typography, piping, everything makes me think of the NBDL or Euro-league.

#28 by Luther Mahoney on 11.20.06 10:28 am |
I do not believe that the trend of NFL coaches wearing suits will go beyond Mike Nolan.
that is because, almost all head coaches now wear
head sets and carry battery packs for the head set,a red replay review flag and other items on them, during games. Former head coach Steve Mari-ucci,who wears sharp looking suits off the field,
once stated,in an NFL Films clip, that with all the
items that he must wear during a game a siut would
not be practical because,it inhibit has movement
when he is standing and moving for three hours.
One must remember that Lombardi,Halas,Landry and
others, who wore suits, rarely wore head sets and
one of the few who did wear a head set from that era-Bud Grant-wore casual pants,a purple wind-
breaker and a Vikings cap.
After yesterday’s game, the sight of Mike Nolan removing his jacket while an attendent
remove wires and other items reminded me of an
undercover cop who is wired for a dangerous
assignment.

I don’t know if any of you are familiar with Lexington, Virginia but I traveled there from Fort Worth for a wedding this weekend. It’s the home of Washington & Lee and VMI - who played Liberty U in some fine red and gold unis. A beautiful college town to say the least, and some nice uniforms, pictures here

I don’t think there is anything wrong with the Celtics alts. I am not a particularly huge fan of the jersey, but the shorts look on the ok side. As one of the last 20 actual Celtics fans left in the world who appreciate the history and tradition surrounding the team I naturally feat change. That’s why they make me sick.
I actually don’t mind the St. Patrick’s Day unis because at least that is embracing Boston’s Irish history and are worn for a specific day and not just thrown on whenever they feel like they should wear a different uniform. To me the Celtics uniform is the most aesthetically appealing uniform in sports because of its simplicity.
On another note I don’t really like the addition of the shamrock to the waist of the shorts or to the back of the jersey either.

I think Senior Day would qualify as special enough.
Plus, they were probably sick of wearing the jerseys against good teams and losing. Break em out on a day that’s special, but against a crappy team, instant reversal of fortunes.
As much as I despise ND, those green unis are fantastic. Whenever I play Michigan at ND in NCAA football, I switch the unis to the green.
Actually, that’s a whole different topic. Anyone else like me who loves making sure the unis on the opposing teams are the best possible when playing video games?
It’s one of my pet peeves with NHL 06. In the dynasty mode, you can’t change the opposing team’s jersey.

As to the ban on the black NBA alts, the Rockets were supposed to get a black alt this season. My buddy does the lettering for the team (Paul interviewed him for an ESPN article a while back) and he actually got to see one of them.
After the NBA Draft came and went and there was no unveiling, the topic came up on the local sports radio show in Houston about 6 weeks ago. They called the Rockets to find out why the black jersey wasn’t unveiled yet, and the Rockets said the NBA killed it for this season because they are not approving any new black alts.

Re: The Wizards alternate unis.
I really don’t get these. I suppose the case could be made for the gold since there is a bit of cold in the original home and away unis, and there is a bit of a throwback to the days of the Bullets with the stars and stripes, but I recall someone saying on another board that the new unis, particularly the colors were a tribute to the “old school days of the Bullets.”
Wha?? The Bullets never had gold or black in their color scheme, even back when they were playing in Baltimore. The colors were orange and blue, which changed to red and blue.

This is rare. I’m going to defend the Bullets/Wizards.
I like the new uni. It builds on their color scheme without resorting to black.
Also, if it were monochromatic (i.e. the shorts have the same color as the top) wouldn’t that be just a little bit too much of the shimmery material?
#41 by Big Ed on 11.20.06 11:03 am |
great commentary on the ND green alt. unis….I too was under the impression that they were strictly reserved for “special” games…BUT they have been losing in them as of late…the USC game was a heartbreaker for sure…great use of them though…not a bigger game last year in the NCAA arguably…the BC game was another crusher for the green…i actually had money on BC and when the Irish came out w/ them on i thought i was screwed for sure…that ass clown Tyrone Willingham used the green TOO much…trying to cover up for his shitty coaching by being gimmicky and hoping nobody would notice that he was crap…

I’m in agreement with Brandon T. and Nick. I’m no fan of Notre Dame, but I think their green jerseys look great and I appreciate how the football program uses them: as a surprise and not some cynical marketing shtick. Some teams wear their “alternates” so often it renders the word meaningless.
Also, I’m going to have to side with the Wizards on their two-tone look. Anything that reminds me of my favorite basketball movie, “Hoosiers” (remember the red-over-gold unis of the Hickory Huskers?) is good.

It’s actually more a question of visibility due to light conditions than visibility in the snow. A significant portion of the season in many European leagues takes place during the months where the sun is never very high in the sky, and even a 3pm match is more of a dusk-game than a day-game.

ND used to wear the green jerseys for special games but apparently beating up on an overmatched team now counts as a special game. It would have made more sense to break out green jerseys for USC next week (or at least green numbers a la the 1992 Sugar Bowl) but Weis wasn’t about to lose in them.

The BC link above got me thinking of another jersey-related tribute that, I think, is still in place. Iowa State has a native Iowan each season wear #40 in honor of Chris Street, an Iowa player from Indianola, IA, who was killed in a traffic accident in mid-season in 1993. Iowa retired Street’s jersey, and Iowa State instituted the tradition. I can’t find a good link that describes it other than this, but as far as I know it’s still going on. This article also mentions that Street was buried in his uniform and warmups he wore for his last game, against Duke.

You obviously know nothing about the history of either the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy or West point.
Long before women were admitted to the academies, there were cheerleaders during games, and they were male.
Oh, the shock and horror!!!!
Give me a break.
As for Kim’s comment that the wizards new alt “builds on their color scheme without resorting to black, HELLO??!!!!
The shorts are black. The stars are black. The second color in the alt is black. How is that not resorting to black?
And if it’s true that the NBA has banned the use of black for alt uni prime colors, then I’m all for it, as it’s boring and lazy cop-out.

College FB unis are great, but the NCAA ought to make the teams wear socks up to the knees. I mean, the NCAA mandates everything else that goes on, why not something that is aesthetically necessary? And has the NFL gotten sloppy when enforcing their own uniform codes? I’m noticing shirt tails out and various sock configurations that are disrupting the uniformity of the teams.
The Titans powder blue pants worked very well yesterday, although the striping was inconsistent, kind of like the Patriots striping inconsistencies. Call me crazy, but I’ve always been of the opinion that the pants stripe should somehow match the sleeve striping. Same deal with the Rams yesterday.
#65 by Kim on 11.20.06 12:53 pm |
Black shorts, and black trime, whoopee.
They could have gone with an all black look. Which is what a lot of teams would have done. They went with a different look without resorting to that.
As for the military academies and cheerleading, it’s a little something called esprit de corps. And a critical building block for teamwork and leadership. Two character elements that are pretty darned critical on a battlefield.

I don’t see his question as all that inappropriate. From the picture the cheerleaders look like any other pretty college cheerleaders. At first glance I didn’t think they were officer trainees either, but then figured that the military would not be so wasteful as to import cheerleaders for football games (or would they? - after all, the coaches are usually not servicemen).
From most of our own experiences with cheerleaders, I think we could vouch that many if not most practicing cheerleaders do not have the mindset necessary to enroll in a service academy - in other words they lack the aggressive tendencies that we would associate with military men and women (except Carolina Panthers cheerleaders) but this viewpoint is after all a stereotype. KT was simply asking a question since the paradigms of cheerleader and soldier seem to easily clash. He doesn’t deserve the grief ya’ll are giving him.

I think USC’s cheerleaders wear somewhat retro cheerleading sweaters. While I LOATHE USC, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after seeing them festooned with roses late in the game against Cal on Saturday night. They always seem to be wearing those white sweaters which seem like they came from the movie ‘Hoosiers’ (though they adorn the USC ladies much better). They keep the uniforms simple.

ND Grad….I love THIS version of the green jerseys. You’re right the gold numbers/white lining make the jersey look special. Much better than the Willingham Version and even the Green Numbered versions
And I had no problem with them wearing the jerseys on Saturday. The green jersey had a sort of ‘jinx’ going on since Gerry Faust and Lou Holtz tried to destroy them. Even saturday some fans saw the green jersey and went “Ah shit”…Better to ‘break’ that curse sooner against a lesser team than later

Here’s another good photo of the Song Girls from this year’s Rose Bowl.

I wish the Nets would bring back the old school Stars and Stripes uniforms. The red alternets belong in the same place they buried the Nets’ tie dyed uniforms of the early 90’s.

Tie Dyed? Did Bill Walton play for the Nets? pics please…

i’ve been looking for pics from the 1992 sugar bowl everyone is pointing to that Notre Dame wore green numbers in, and cant find any…anyone have some photographic evidence?

One more shot of the previous Rutgers uniforms, for you Scarlet Knight fans.
And I like both the red Nets’ alteernates and the Wizards’ gold and black!

There is a Yahoo Group
with lots of pictures of cheerleaders in retro uniforms. I think some of the pictures go back to the 30s but most are from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Pretty sure they’re actually navy, angry guy.

Worst Photoshop job ever. The double/ghosted face next to her left elbow is the most noticeable mistake.

Wizards Alternate Unis.
Wes Unseld Meets Wes Craven…Spooky ugly.
http://us.i1.yimg.co...
Creamer site had an article about a year ago from the ex-NBA vp.creative director who said Commissioner Stern blackballed black unis because he was watching ESPN highlights one night and all he saw from a distance was the home team in white playing the road team in black unis…(good point) in particular the Jazz as I recall wearing black and why would the Jazz ever wear black with a purple, green and blue logo palette???

I dont know if this has already been addressed, but has anyone else noticed the chinstraps of some nfler’s helmets are riveted in now. I’ve only noticed it on chinstraps that are secured through the facemask. Hopefully the links work below.

P.S. Nice fur that Gilbert Brown wore as honorary captain in the Packer/Patriots games. I think he might have just ate the animal for breakfast.

I like the nets reds, its not like its some random color they came up with (Celtics blacks).
Do the USC cheerleaders usually do that depending on the BCS bowl they are in? Like oranges for the orange bowl, Nachos for the Fiesta Bowl?
I LOVE the Titans pants. i like all of the titans unis, but they look the best. i wonder how they would go with the Blue tops.
I also like the Bronco’s blue pants, but they need to wear socks that are either all or mostly orange.
#86 by Frinklin on 11.20.06 2:20 pm |
Actually, that’s a whole different topic. Anyone else like me who loves making sure the unis on the opposing teams are the best possible when playing video games?
Don’t pick up an XBOX 360 then. For Madden 07, they are no alt jersey combos. As a Seahawk fan, it drives me nuts that I can only pick from blue-on-blue-on-blue or the white on white.
Can’t edit any players either, but that’s another aggravation.

I’m not sure. I’ve seen them wear the roses on the uniform a few times in the past (that is, before they lost to UT in the 2006 Rose Bowl), but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen cheerleaders other than USC do this and I don’t think I’ve ever seen USC cheerleaders do anything but roses for the Rose Bowl (being a PAC-10 team, I’m not sure they would ever go to the Orange Bowl. If I’m wrong on that, someone let me know). A quick glimpse through Google Images didn’t turn up anything either.

When and why did Kobe Bryant change from being number 8 to 24.
#89 by mike on 11.20.06 2:38 pm |
first of all, im all for alternate jerseys! it breaks up the monotony that regular jersey combinations often make. id love to see some nfl who do not have alternate jerseys, get one:
packers-yellow
steelers-yellow
49ers-gold
saints-gold
bills-red
etc…

the ohio state cheerleader unis the other night were AMAZING.
i’m a huge USC cheerleader fan, too.
i like ‘em old school like that.
i love the BC thing and i LOVED the rams uniform thing…very cool uni’s. i hate the new gold and dark blue. yuck. too 2000ish for my taste.

Speaking of the Broncos socks, why do you see that orange stripe on some players, but you don’t see it on others? Is it part of the blue sock, the low white, or a third sock altogether (which I’d doubt). Ideas?

The Saints do have Gold alternates. And I love how the example from this website is an Aaron Brooks jersey. Too funny for words.

The Washington State Cougars donned the old “Cougars” script helmets for Apple Cup the third year in a row this weekend. Unfortunately, they didn’t stay undefeated in them, however. They also took the striping off the pants for the game.

Watching the Maui Invitational
Those Memphis uni’s are an abomination
Horizontal, diagonal, vertical stripes
looks like tetris

Those Dr. J red/white/blues are very sweet. They’ve recently (past two seasons) used this as their throwback, but it’s not the same thing.
1. the current throwbacks are too baggy (read current) &
2. the shoulder ’straps’ (however that’s referred to) are too wide, they should be very narrow.
Those Dr. J, billy melchionni, Billy Paultz, Larry Kenon uniforms are why I became an ABA fan and a Net fan to this day !!!! Silly bugger that I am.

It looks like the white part is just pushed up over the orange. If you look hard enough you can see some orange

Out of curiousity did anyone else notice last night that the chargers had their numbers on their buckles of their chinsraps at the tops of the helmet, I dont have any pictures but I noticed it on alot of the players.
#101 by joe on 11.20.06 3:13 pm |
The orange stripe is on the uniform knee sock. Some of the players are wearing navy blue knee-high hosiery and pulling regular white athletic socks up to the approximate same height. If I were a coach I’d hit my players with a hefty fine for this. For some reason its a widely replicated look even though it makes the player look like he’s mentally challenged and can’t dress himself. My beloved Bumskins are a major malfeaser.
#102 by Paul Lukas on 11.20.06 3:14 pm |
They’ve been doing this for several years. The Chiefs do it, too. To my knowledge, they’re the only teams with uni-numbered chinstraps.
#103 by joe on 11.20.06 3:16 pm |
On second glance, it looks like the Bronco in your example may just have his socks rolled in such a fashion as to disguise the orange stripe.

Regarding the Ohio State football cheerleaders:
This is what they normally wear.
Unless it’s really cold, then they wear these.
