Question: How great are Uni Watch readers? Answer: Pretty damn great. Last week I put out the call for screen-grabs of Charlie Bell’s Wednesday-night wardrobe malfunction, and reader H. Beezy came through with several excellent shots. As you may recall, when posting those pics on Friday, I lamented that we still didn’t have a shot of Terry Glenn’s Ohio State buckeye helmet decal from the October 23rd Cowboys/Giants game. I was particularly interested in that incident because I hadn’t seen the game myself — I only knew about Glenn’s decal because several dozen readers had e-mailed me about it.
As it turns out, there’s an inside Cowboys source who’s a Uni Watch reader. I didn’t realize this until the person in question, who prefers to remain anonymous, e-mailed this photo to me on Friday afternoon (here’s a larger version, and a huge version), with Glenn’s buckeye decal clearly evident in all its contraband glory. I don’t know if Glenn was fined for this, but he hasn’t worn the buckeye in subsequent games.
Take a close look, incidentally, and you can see the Dymo Tape name label on the back of Glenn’s helmet, a Cowboys visual signature that dates all the way back to the 1960s. Look for further details on that classically inconspicuous detail — with help from our new friend in Dallas — in an upcoming blog segment.

But last week I passed along news from an inside Mets source who said the new design was similar to what was used during the home run derby, with a two-button collar and “a thick black ’stripe’ from the armpit down, like NFL jerseys. … Judging by the sneak peek available here, that information was, unfortunately, accurate. … The New York City Marathon was yesterday, and the New York Times ran this graphic to help identify the top runners. The retirment of numbers not worn by players is bad enough, but when it is a number that would never conceivably be worn by a player, the whole thing just gets silly. I want to see a Suns player ask for number 832, be told that he cannot have it because it is retired, and then settle for 831 instead.

The Buffalo Bulls have new uniforms for the College basketball season. I’m still trying to find a pic. They are very similar to the uniforms of the past, but they have changed the striping and piping on it. On the Jersey they added black piping and changed the Font on “Buffalo”… the shorts have the weird nike stripes that end up going across the butt of the shorts

Did anyone else notice during the Ohio State – Illinois game that hand-warmers worn around the waists of the Illinois players included stripes that matched their pants? The warmers were navy blue, but the part that sat on their hips had orange piping to match their pants. This is the best photo I could find. Look at the players’ left hip:

I mentioned that McNair/McAlister thing the first week of the season…from what I can gather the Ravens by default always go with the lower “C” (I know it’s a replica, but it’s technicaly accurate), but McNair has a history of the higher “C”. My guess is it’s a personal preference that he requested.
And while looking for pictures I found this ebay listing. It pains me to see people pushing this crap as authentic (2 DIFFERENT “9’s”), and pains me even more to see people buy them. UGGGHHHH

Indiana University had added an American Flag to their jerseys. Note that Oklahoma also had these flags, so it appears to be a Kelvin Sampson thing.

The closest I know to that happening is with Randy White. He prefers to only signs the white Maryand helmet with the gold “M” because that is the on he wore, but I have seen some current helmets out there with his sig….guess he needs the money.

The Suns list Cotton in their ring of honor, along with former trainer (and non player) Joe Proski.
Cotton’s banner and Proski’s banners don’t contain numbers like the players’ banners do.

Anyone have a screen shot of LANCE not wearing his proper NYC marathon number, but instead just wearing a big sign that said LANCE?

I played for a black and red team all through high school and then went on to play rugby at western, we actually moved from the school colours and went with an all black jersey with purple socks and purple numbers, it looked great, but the school took over our design this year and went back to school implemented purple.

Douglas Adams (hopefully not the deceased author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), is credited as pointing out the McNair-McCallister nameplate inconsistency. Not sure when he let paul know about it, but I posted in last Monday’s comment section (10/31/06) about it and Mike from Queens was able to find some different in-game pictures of it. Also, it seems to happen with both the purple and the white jerseys in the game, not just on signing day.

The Giants also use some sort of tape to ID their batting helmets. They have been doing this for quite some time, as opposed to using numbers like most teams.

All of the professional athletes had personalized bibs in the NYC Marathon. Here is a picture of Americans Meb Keflezighi and Dathan Ritzenhein from the race with their personalized bibs. I am not sure why Lance got one, but there were others
I also disagree with Paul’s gratuitous logo creep comment. These athletes receive the majority of their paychecks from these shoe companies. We are not upset when they wear/use team logos in the NFL where the team pays the athletes, so why would we be upset here?

The NY Islanders retired number 739 for Al Arbours coaching victories http://www.islesinfo...
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a policy of retiring numbers only for players “who have made a significant contribution to the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club and have experienced a career-ending incident while a member of the Maple Leaf team”
The only numbers retired by the Leafs are #5 Bill Barilko and #6 Ace Bailey.
1993, the Leafs began a policy of “Honoured Numbers” for their greatest stars. This numbers can be worn by other players but are honoured for the players who wore them. Alex Steen, Andrew Raycroft, Ian White, John Pohl and Mike Peca will wear honoured numbers (1, 7, 21 and 27, respectively) in 2006-07.
More teams should honour numbers rather then retired stupid ones like coaching numbers.

a bit of speculation: since the all star bp/home run derby jerseys are set up to feature the colors of the hosting team, maybe the switch to this uniform side panneling is to give the jerseys a consistant feel in the derby jerseys. think about it. the derby jerseys will have an automatic template (look at the picture of the pirates bp jersey to the al home run derby jersey. same except for logos) and then all you have to do for the other league is juxtapose the colors.

Those two schools from sunday are both from oakland not san francisco, the orange team is McClymonds ala the mack wordmark on their jerseys, the purple team is castlemont. Two of the tougher inner sity schools in oaklnad. and two of the uglier uniforms in the bay. I saw mack on tv a few weeks ago and thought i bet the faithful would hate that

Is all logo creep bad? Those NY Marathon runners have been paid a good sum of money by these companies. This money has allowed them to train as athletes on a more full-time basis. In return, the company wants the public to understand that they are associated with this athlete, have provided them money, and quality equipment so that they can pursue their passion. The companies obviously hope is that the public might buy some of their ware. This seems like a good deal all around. And as far as I could see, none of the logo placements were aesthetically poor.

Tom Brady, here joining the many players not straping up the chinstrap. He has had a past of unusual chinstap configurations. Atleast he is not wearing a glove on his throwing hand..yet, give him time and some colder weather and he will. I know some quarterbacks wear the gloves for the grip, but I just can’t understand how they can still have the touch with gloves. And I just think it looks weird. Agree?

In the Uni Watch collective knowledge, which is vast and deep like the oceans, what qualifies as “retro”? Does Gordie Howe’s jersey qualify as “retro” if the basic design of the jersey has barely changed? Granted, it is old, but is it retro? I’d say “vintage” more than “retro”.
According to Answers.com, vintage, as an adjective, can be defined as “characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic.”
Retro, on the other hand, is defined as the following from Wikipedia.com: “Retro, short for retrospective, is a modern term used to describe things from a bygone era. It is often used in a positive sense, referring to quirky or attractive products that are no longer available”.
Is this just semantics? Since people use vintage and retro interchangeably in describing jerseys, should there be a distinction?

First, let me second what Minna said about voting. Contrary to popular belief it is important and also, voting in elections makes you eligible to complain when our officials inevitably screw up again.
As to Teebz’s vintage v. retro question: I would think (and I haven’t consulted a dictionary) that the difference between retro and vintage is whether something is a direct reproduction of a past uniform style (which I would consider vintage) or if it merely harkens back to past designs without actually encompassing all the trappings of the past jersey or uniform (which I would say is retro). If this definition between the two is accepted (and anyone who finds fault with my definition should feel free to attack it) then it is possible that we could be talking about whether a baseball uniform is vintage because it has a beltloop in the front of the pants (like they did back in the 20s, 30s, and 40s) or if it is retro simply because it uses a past design.
I can already actually see where there might be a problem with my reasoning, so feel free to address it.

Ok, since Minna asked, and todayรขโฌโขs article is titled รขโฌลAsk and ye shall receiveรขโฌย, hereรขโฌโขs a quick intro course to spotting the difference between an NHL replica jersey and an NHL pro jersey. Weรขโฌโขll start with the similarities as CCM made some serious upgrades when they moved from cheap polyester to Air-Knit fabric.
Both jerseys are similar in that they both have:
- CCM-patented Air-Knit 100% polyester double-knit. The fabric is breathable and durable, in other words.
- Interlock neck hem for durability.
- 2-inch wide bottom hem, soon to be killed off by Reebok.
Now, for the differences that are clearly visible when looking at a jersey, they are:
- NHL pro jerseys have a larger logo on the front than replicas do, and it is embroidered directly to the jersey. Replicas are glued on.

just chiming in…
a. about the marathon and the legible first names. that is done by design. virtually all distance races, (of substantial lengths- marathons or halfs) are scored by a computer microchip on your shoelace, however you are assigned the bib with your first name in large block letters. that is done for racer support. some halfs and marathons dont allow ipods or music, which means all you have is the fans and their suppport to get you through. and let me tell you, they do support you. when i did the runners world half marathon in april, these people yell and scream to push you, make you work and finish. they never have met you, but when you hear a group of 30 people screaming “c’mon todd work hard!!! hills coming up… 7, 6, 5 miles to go…etc. it is an unbelievable motivation and spark for the racer.
i would recommend running a half marathon to everyone… give yourself about 5 months to train…what a sense of accomplishment.
b. over the weekend, someone posted about the annoying chevrolet “our country” commercials. it is to the point of insanity now. i never thought i would hate a song more than last summer’s bryan adams tribute “life is an open road” for sportscenters 50 states in 50 days promo. but now it seams that melloncamp has done it…

I played Box Lax as a ‘tender, and it was much harder and tougher than ice hockey ‘tending (which I also do). Believe it or not, these people have amazing accuracy with their shots and the ball has a knack of finding holes in the padding.
And even when it hits the padding, you feel it, I got bruises through the arm and chest protector.
I only had 4 floor times before I was hurt by a shot that dislocated my thumb and stretched some ligaments on my right hand (it’s now set on a slightly different angle than my other thumb, which is pretty cool).
So yes, it’s just as tough as an outdoor lacrosse goalie’s job.

I agree with BtotheE; the gloves on each hand of the quarterback is weird. I understand it on the non-throwing hand, like Brady, Vick, and others wear, but I’d think the ball would grip too much when trying to throw a pass. Some announcer made the point that it could be for the reason so the QB would be able to pull the ball back easier after a pump-fake. Xavier Lee of the Seminoles is doing this too and he looks like a WR, not a QB.

**CORRECTION**
The Seattle Thunderbirds are a WHL (Western Hockey League) team. The play in the CHL (Canadian Hockey League). The T-Birds are not a minor league team, they are a major junior team. This is different from college hockey and minor league hockey.

A fantastic jersey would be Cory Lidle on the Philadelphia Flyers or Winnipeg / New York Jets.

#155 should have told you that it was more than likely a replica since I couldn’t see a fighting strap. The problem with Joe’s assessment is this, as written in my “how to identify an NHL pro jersey” segment:
- Authentic jerseys prior to 1996, I believe, have the CCM logo embroidered in the teamsรขโฌโข colours in the spot where the puck is now located. Replicas had the CCM logo screened onto the fabric in the same spot.
If that jersey is, in fact, an authentic it would have the CCM logo embroidered onto the bottom hem. However, since it clearly is sporting a vintage collection tag, it’s a replica as I had deduced in Post #155.
My skills of deduction are wasted here. Anyone have a murder I can solve? Somebody get me a Scooby snack.
By the way, Minna, it’s all in good, clean fun that I wrote this. I know you’re poking a little fun. :o)

Also, in response to the possibly overprotected indoor lacrosse goalies: They need all that protection to keep the score (and consequently the game time) under control. It’s not uncommon for an NLL game to end with a final of 18-15 or so, even with all the pads. Also, the sticks in indoor lacrosse are allowed to be modified more than outdoor sticks are, which result in much faster and more accurate shots, with a ball heavier than a hockey puck, and from closer range than in field lacrosse.
They wouldn’t be receiving bruises without those pads, they’d be receiving fractures.

In keeping with the Terry Glenn Buckeye award sticker sighting, I was watching the CMA Awards during breaks from the Monday night game and noticed that the bass player Jay DeMarcus, from the group Rascal Flatts was playing a Scarlet Bass guitar with Buckeyes near the neckjoint. He is from Columbus as is the lead singer. The picture is from the NFL Kickoff concert.
