World Series MVP David Eckstein of the St. Louis Cardinals displays his championship gear.

Man, those are ugly hats … oh well, it was an ugly Series.

Like I said last night, Ugly Hats

Also, Mizzou isnt wearing all gold as many thought the were going to earlier in the week. They are wearing Gold pants and black tops.

Go Irish

Baseball is like the old guy trying to be hip.

Cardinal fans will by the gear despite the ugliness, not because of it.

How bad was that series? Uni wise and talent wise?
Logo sucked, patches sucked (and were HUGE), championship gear sucked, and, oh yeah, the teams sucked. and I HATE the cards.
Cubbies in ‘07 baby! hahahaha

you mean 3007, right?

Brinke Guthrie said:

exactly.

haha last night when bud selig gave him the trophy he mispronounced his name(said ecksteen) but at the end of his speech he said it right, (said eckstine)

Those hats are very ugly, but the shirts are nice. John in Athens, you’re right…I’ve waited since 1982 for this, so I am going to buy the stuff anyway. I’ll probably just put the hat away, so I can dig it out in 20 years and laugh at the ugliness!

St. Louis Cardinals, 2006 World Champs! (Sounds so good to say that!)

The patches, championship gear, fielding, etc., sucked. But, the Cards and Tigers have two of the best unis in baseball, so it was a great series, uniwise. Anyway, it doesn’t matter how ugly the championship gear is, the fans will buy it (like my ugly 1997 and 2003 Marlins hats, which I only wore during the next offseason)…

Just a heads-up…there is the potential for some serious eye-gouging tomorrow in Italy (9am ET on GolTV). Palermo (Pink with black trim) will be visiting Fiorentina (Purple with a little red trim). Since Palermo is away they will probably not be wearing much pink but it still could be quite interesting. You’ve been warned.

T-shirts and hats aside, the games were ugly for Detroit. St. Louis played well, and limited their errors. And since Kenny Rogers is your most dominant pitcher in the playoffs, and you get an extra day with the rain delay, why not run Rogers out there in St. Louis rather than waiting until you get back to Detroit? You needed a win, Leyland!

Kudos to Eckstein, too. World Series MVP is pretty good for a guy who was riddled with injuries this season.

Here’s a closeup of those … things the Cardinals were wearing on their heads. It’s hard to see, but there actually is a Cardinals logo in there somewhere.

wow, that looks HORRIBLE. who designs these things anyway?

Chris Spielman the color analyst for the mich northwestern game just stated that mich recruits have told him that they picked the school because “they liked the helmets”

My sadness at last night’s Tigers loss is tempered greatly by the fact my team didn’t have to put those awful hats on their heads. There must be some sort of wager between manufacturers of “locker room” apparel to see who can design the ugliest championship gear. The Red Wings hats with the brown brims from 1997 still reign as the worst I can remember.
Paul, while they’re not actually uniforms, how ’bout a piece about the evolution (and aesthetic devolution) of championship gear?

after yesterday’s helmet sticker comments, I couldn’t help but notice that Northwestern has three different helmet sticker: stars, wildcat heads and a third I can’t quite identify. Clearly they’re not helping!

Also noticed that Oklahoma quarterback Paul Thompson is wearing the s/s version of the N*ke mismatched undershirt.

I was thinking that last night. Those Red Wings hats were really, really bad. This year’s is the worst I’ve ever seen in baseball, though, for sure.

Missouri did not wear gold jerseys today against Oklahoma, contrary to your report.

I hadn’t seen the Red Wings hats you were talking about, so I went looking for them. You were right … oh my GOD.

Just caught a close up of Leak in the Florida Georgia game and there appears to be a clear hose running out of the back of his uniform near the neck. Any clue what it is?

Its the cooling pads. They hook up a tube to the shoulder pads and cold water flows through the shoulder pads to cool the player off.

Ugliest caps I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a LOT of ugly caps. Small consolation for a heartbroken Tigers fan.

KU football broke out the red jersey’s today for their game against Colorado.

Speaking of pride stickers, I was reading that article from yesterday how Cincinnati has stickers now and noticed another one…DUKE! They have pride stickers, but they just showed up all of the sudden.. they weren’t being awarded earlier as far as I can tell.

Anyone know what they are? They look like pitchforks, but I can’t find anything on the web talking about them.

BC didn’t wear throwback unis as I thought they were supposed to

I assume a pitchfork would be appropriate for Duke because they are the Blue Devils

I know we bust on Nike a lot here (they deserve most of it) but I must give them credit on one thing: the Ole Miss jerseys are pretty sweet if you ask me.

Since when did Duke get a football team?

I noticed Ole Miss got rid of all the blue from their away uniforms this season. Did this get past Paul?

ANY WS where the star pitchers are Kenny Rogers and Jeff Weaver of all people, is definitely a candidate for Series Most Likely to Have Accidentally Crossed Over From a Parallel Bizarro Universe.

And are we STILL waiting for a Tiger pitcher to handle the bunt-and-throw???

Still, the two classic unis looked nice…the only improvement there could have been Cardinals-Yankees: Birds on the Bat vs Pinstripes….

Yeah, obviously. I just can’t find anything about them. They didn’t have any stickers until at least the Miami game I pictured. And it is not like they waited to get a win before awarding them, as Duke is dropping to 0-8 this week.

Oh wait..here it is.. at the end of the Boys of Summer column.

YAY! Baseball season is over! Time for all the attention to be devoted to real sports.

But it’s nice to see a Gator win the MVP.

Real sports? Like curling?

Why Does St.Louis always get ugly hats, remember the rams super bowl hats? Ugh!!

Congrats, St. Louis on winning the WS. You looked pretty good doing it, both uni-wise and play-wise. Now, all you need to do is burn those hats.

Seriously.

Speaking of burning: I really appreciate the simple majesty of the Gophers’ unis—until I actually watch them play, that is. What a train-wreck. They should have called that one at half-time.

Resin said:

Finally! We are back to wearing our appropriate away uniforms.
Next step is get the two stripes back on the pants, vice three.

Did anyone else notice that the Cardinals were sporting swimming goggles during their champagne celebration? Wusses… Can’t take the burn of victory huh?

Anyone watching the Maryland/Florida State game??

Maryland is sporting their black Under Armour uni’s…personally, I kinda like them (I’m an advocate of the new school)…but the barbershop pole style undershirts are really ugly.

Under Armour makes worse jerseys than Nike, and now they make worse undershirts as well. That Maryland thing is worse than the different colored sleeves of Nike

Miami and FSU seem to be wearing different undersleeves than normal. They’ve got different color arms, but the contrast color starts around the bicep of the left sleeve, rather than being the entire sleeve.

Real sports are sports where at the highest levels, competition is too strenuous for the athletes to be expected to play more than once a day. So, no baseball, golf, bowling, curling, etc.

Andrew said:

Teams have been doing that for years now. I can distinctly remember the Red Sox sporting the goggles in ‘03 or ‘04.

I personally love the black Maryland alternates. It’s not overly messy like many of the other football uniforms out there, such as those new Vikings monstrosities. If I had my way, I would pair the black alternates with black pants as well:-)

In my opinion, I think the Terps basketball team should switch their jersey template to match the football team, just for consistency.

Hey does anyone know why the NY Giants wear different pants stripes? With the blue jerseys, the stripes are together. With white, they are separated. Sorry if this has been covered before…..

South Carolina is wearing their black jerseys tonight, too.

I’m not a huge fan of the Maryland black alts. (although I am a huge Maryland fan)… they look like they were trying too hard to stand out. Maryland looks great in the red uni’s, and the Underarmour works well with their regular color scheme. I like the UA template much more than the Nike template because it’s not over complecated. Besides, UA was created by a UMD graduate who played on the football team, so I see it less as logo-creep, and more as self-endorsing. Great game to watch though.

FEAR THE TURTLE!!!

So I was just watching Sportscenter, and they are on the USC v Oregon State game highlights. It brought to my mind this question…Which do you prefer: the Oregon State Nike Model (that Miami previously wore and which seemed to be sweeping the nation prior to…) or the Bib Nike Model? Knowing that both of these are quite bad, which would you rather have? At this point, I have to say I like the bib more.

In the past, the Celtics have worn a black band on the front of their jerseys to commemorate the loss of someone in the organization.

i’m efforting a pic.

I noticed that too…a couple years ago the Giants had a different white away jersey alltogether. Don’t know why they switched…

I like the bib as well…the other template is just too busy. The piping on the new style is much less visible. It looks “cleaner” (if a busy jersey can even look clean?)

I like Miami, Clemson, and Michigan’s away uni’s…However I prefer the piping on the jersey to be the only piping on the whole uni. The pants piping doesn’t do it for me

I just got web access as I await a connecting flight at the Pheonix airport, so I logged on to see if anyone had commented on this. I don’t remember seeing teams don goggles for locker room celebrations before. My boss and I were watching the postgame festivities in a sports bar, and he just started complaining about how much he hates the plastic-lined winner’s locker room when we spotted the goggles. Total wuss move! What’s next, teams first change into wetsuits?

Sorry, my memory’s not that good. It’s still not right just like the plastic-lined lockers – complete with the winning-team’s logo – are not right. Does New York City place a net over the streets when it throws a ticker-tape parade?

How about a discussion on stadium gift shops?

So I was on business in San Diego, and this morning I had time to stop in on the Padres main gift shop at Petco Field. As a big believer in the power of brown, I’ve not been a fan of the Padres’ change to blue uniforms. So entering their team store today, I was hellbent on coming out of their with one of their classic-style hats for my boys. Mission accomplished! As a bonus, I wanted to find something with the ancient slugging Padre. There was one t-shirt, but it was too expensive. At least they had something.

I was shocked by how little Tony Gwynn stuff the store had as well as nothing whatsoever regarding other Padres stars from the past. Where was that vintage Randy Jones jersey? The young people working in the store had no idea what I was going on about regarding the slugging Padre, the brown and mustard color scheme, etc.

The Blue Jays stadium – whatever it’s called now – also had little sense of the team’s short history, and the entire city of Toronto, including the stadium stores, has not a trace of the Montreal Expos. I know they’re completely different cities, but for a country that’s only had 2 baseball teams, you’d think the Blue Jays would stock a few vintage Expos hats.

A couple of years ago I was in Atlanta, and while seeing a game at Turner Field I stopped in a half-dozen stadium stores in search of a vintage Hank Aaron jersey. Not-a-one!!! Not even a Hammerin’ Hank t-shirt. The only thing that had was a little lapel pin with his number.

Maybe I don’t see what’s missing in terms of Phillies “lore” at Citizens Bank Park, but I always feel like I can get some vintage shirts with Schmidt or Carlton on the back. I can get a Richie Ashburn shirt for the older men in my family. Same goes for buying vintage stuff at Yankees Stadium.

Can you buy memorabilia (sp?) of your childhood heroes at your stadium store?

I’ve been in two. The Angel’s shop is really average but it makes up for it with the fact that it is stuffed with merchandise for my favorite team (as if I need more Angels merch). I’ve also been in Seattle’s team store and it is absolutely amazing. The rather small upper floor has all sorts of high end memorabilia and some game-used stuff. The HUGE lower floor has absolutely everything you could ever think of including a very impressive selection of oppposing team hats. You can also get some cool stuff on the clearance racks. I picked up some WBC gear in July for something like 1/2 price.

Correct me if I’m wrong… but did Marcus Giles win a World Series with the Braves? It’s a little different than winning the NLCS, I’d imagine.

Try to not confuse the two. One is the World Series. The other is just another runner-up. :o)

The White Sox have a “Hall of Fame” shop where they have about every jersey the team has ever worn (which is a lot). Obviously they only have like, two players for each jersey (ie the 1983 team are represented mainly by Carlton Fisk and maybe Harold Baines, but you won’t find a Greg Luzinski jersey) but they have the kinda jersey that they were wearing when Luke Appling was on teh team in teh 1930s, the red one from when Dick Allen was there. So, the White Sox are pretty well stocked. They also have a New Era cap section that has just about every kinda throw back hat for all teams.

Asking the Jays to stock Expos gear would be like asking the Maple Leafs to sell Canadiens jerseys.

I haven’t been to the Padres’ gift shop, but I went to San Diego in late 1998 (2 months after the Pads’ World Series appearance) and was amazed by how little Padres stuff was available in stores. It was all Chargers this and Chargers that–and yes, it was the middle of football season, but c’mon! If your team’s just been to the Series, you oughta show them off.

The Royals’ gift shop did not stock any authentic jerseys this year (except for the BP jerseys). Shame, since they switched to some nice threads this year. Also, in late September when the Royals are 30+ games out and only like 1,000 people are showing up, the jerseys are usually very deeply discounted. I picked up a powder blue for $50 last year (they’re normally sold for $200).

So no throwbacks, though you can get a George Brett bobblehead or a Frank White magnet or something. They had Buck O’Neil Monarchs t-shirts for a while this year, and hopefully those will be back.

As far as the World Series hats go, I say the best ones they had were in 2004.

Took a vacation from Southern Ontario down to Pittsburgh and PNC park for some pirates action this summer.. Oddly enough they swept the Cardinals. But short of the Homestead Greys hats they were giving away there wasn’t a lot of older Pirates gear there. Short of one type of Clemente throwback, there was nothing. No throwback hats, or other jerseys. Not even anything from the “we are family” pirates. I even had a hell of a time finding a New Era 5950 of the current team. Kind of disappointing from a city with such a rich baseball tradition.

Talk about THE ugliest championship caps. I waited my entire life for the Packers to win a Super Bowl. When I see the beyond ugly championship hats, I almost wanted them to give back the trophy…kidding, of course!

Hey Riley,

As for the Angels shop, is there any decent Jim Abbott stuff available in? I, like a bunch of Abbott fans, am a fan of his because of his arm (just like mine), not because of where I live, or who I root for. (I’m a Cardinal fan in Indiana.)

Anyway, I grew up buying all the Angels stuff I could find around here, which wasn’t much at all. Now with the net, eBay, and such, I’ve had a little more luck. But the one thing I would love to find is an authentic early 90’s (pre Disney, but after the V-necks) Angels jersey. Any word on finding one of those?

why does everyone hate the cardinals and say this series was horrible….this is getting old….anything can happen, and an unlikely outcoome did happen…doesn’t mean it was a bad series none the less..
