More on the Clemson grotesquely purple uniforms. Quoted from the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook –
“Clemson’s official colors are Northwestern purple (PMS 541) and burnt orange (PMS 165), but many of Clemson’s athletic uniforms are predominantly orange and white. According to legend, Clemson used to have pale purple and gold as the official colors until former football coach Jess Neely changed that because he wanted uniforms that were more colorfast. It seems that the weather and constant washings were causing the uniforms to fade. So Neely worked with the Clemson school of textiles and developed deeper colors for uniforms, colors that held up under the rays of the sun and the workings of the washing machines.”
That has to be the ugliest ‘burnt orange’ I have ever seen. Now THIS is burnt orange.
As for the World Series…I love Reyes’ socks, but that hat makes me want to wrap the brim around his neck to bend it.

the hat patches weren’t that bad. i for one thought the only eason verlander had such a bad ame was because the huge sleeve patch weighed his arm down.

Anyone else notice that two different types of 5950s were being worn last night. Some of the players are wearing hats with the gray underbill, but several players were wearing the new hat design with the black underbill. The lack of “uniformity” was very un-baseball. The black underbill is supposedly going to be the norm starting next year. It was also used during the WBC last spring. I prefer the gray, but I guess it’s not the end of the world if they use black underbills. That said, at least make everyone choose one or the other for the World Series.

I guess the players have a choice on which style hat they will wear.

Does anyone know if they sew the world series patches on to their old hats or if they get new ones. They might have a choice and that might explain the lack of consistancy in the underbills. The grey ones might be players who had them attached to their old ones whereas the black ones could be players who simply have new hats. I have no idea whether or not this is correct though but it is my best guess.

Just for the record, I hate Clemson and I have been a Gamecock fan my whole life. That being said, at the risk of being “that guy,” I dont think the Clemson uniforms were that bad. I thought they would look a lot worse.
On another note, I liked the tiger hats with this logo on it. I just thought they should have had an all navy hat with it instead of one with an orange bill.

Perhaps Verlander is hanging his head because the patch is so darn big it’s weighing his melon down.
I don’t think the design is too bad, but making it so big was a mistake. Now the hats are starting to look like those lame hats in the hat stores with everyone’s logo on them.

I don’t think the patch on the jersey is nearly as offensive as the patch on the hat. Teams almost always have a sleeve patch, and the WS patch on the right sleeve isn’t noticeably larger than most of them. The problem is that it’s not designed with the team’s jersey in mind, so it looks out of place.
The patch on the hat, on the other hand, is atrocious. Hat patches are always a bad idea–they ruin the symmetry of the design. This one is the worst I’ve ever seen, viz. the biggest. My guess is that MLB needed it to be that size so that the text would be legible. A better idea would have been to use an alternative version of the logo without any type–like maybe just the batter/globe portion of it–and then put it on there in a reasonable size. Not only would this look much better, but it would be a succesful branding decision as well: we’re certainly seeing enough of the logo, so seeing an alternate would be helpful.
Reyes’s socks are magnificent. They were even highter last night than in the NLCS. Did anyone notice how the socks have blue stripes on them as well as white? It was hard to see from the centerfield camera, but when they showed a closeup of the socks in the dugot (7th or 8th inning) it was plain to see. Nice!

Today’s Boston Globe: Coming over to dark side
The Titans made a fashion statement last Sunday they may choose to stick with. Tennessee had gone 0-2 in white jerseys and 0-3 in dark jerseys this season, but was 0-0 in dark jerseys with dark pants, a combination punter Craig Hentrich wore at the team’s uniform unveiling in the spring of 1999 but had never been seen since. Willing to try anything, coach Jeff Fisher gave the team the option of going with the dark-on-dark look in Washington, and several players responded enthusiastically. The Titans defeated the Redskins, 25-22. “I was one of the many players that wanted to wear the blue on blue,” said running back Travis Henry, who ran for a career-high 178 yards. “Maybe we need to wear blue on blue at home. We’ll have to talk to Coach Fisher about that.”

The Nike jerseys have a slit in the back to ease in the tucking in and pulling on over pads. It also reduces bulk in the butt pad area and in the pants in general when the jersey is tucked in.

I was reading my issue of this month’s GQ just now when I came across a small article about changes to some NBA teams’ uniforms for this upcoming season. I was all ready to type up a post saying how the article’s writer disliked purple on sports teams until I finished the article and saw the writer’s name: Paul Lukas. Well-done bit, Paul!
My only question is: In the article you said the Warriors’ “The City” throwback “is back in circulation“. Haven’t they been wearing these as alternates for the past couple seasons? I’m a Warriors fan, and I think I remember them wearing these throwbacks since the ‘04-’05 season. Or are you saying that the Warriors are planning on wearing the throwbacks more often this season?

I wonder why the Redskins have decided to permanently go with the white/white combo? It was a “good luck” thing last season, I think, but this year, they’re not exactly burning up the NFL, and they’ve worn white/white every week. Are the burgundy pants gone forever? I thought that was a very good, timeless look for them (which makes sense, since they’ve been wearing that combo since the late ’70s).

Also, the fabrics are different. The 3930 is made with a moisture wicking material which I believe is mostly polyester, while the 5950s are wool.

I was wondering if there has been a feature on Umpire uniforms and their transformation…The ump behind the plate wore a “suit” jacket. However, he has also wore a regular polo shirt in the past. You know I jokingly brought it up earlier, but it seems much more relevant now after hearing Kenny Rogers’ ridiculous “big clump of dirt” explanation. The BP hat not only has the black bill (much easier to conceal something like pine tar than on the gray underbill of the 5950) which several of you have already mentioned, but it’s also much more cooperative than the 5950 in holding a curve of the bill. Think about all the underbrim writing Paul has covered, most of the scribbling we see are with guys with hats sporting fairly flat bills. Rogers keeps a pretty nice curve on the bill of that BP cap, which on top of the dark underbill, would keep a foreign substance more easily concealed from photographs. Now I’m not accusing Kenny Rogers of using the BP hat specifically to cheat, but it certainly is something to think about after tonight.

I love HD-Tivo! Greatest invention ever made. On that note, they had a closeup of Kenny Rogers while he was interviewed and sure enough, he wears a 3930 BP cap. The bill is blacked out (and in HD it’s easy to see they did a piss-poor job of it, the edge is more grey than black); you can also see the waffle-type design on the 3930 clearly. In contrast, they had Craig Monroe on there as well and you could see he was wearing a 5950 wool cap, not the one that Rogers was wearing. Cool stuff.

maybe it was the huge patches that looked like they where falling off(nice bike shorts Mr. Winslow), or maybe all browns vs. broncos games should look like this

Since MLB owns the MLB logo on the hat, and the World Series logo on the hat, why don’t they remove the little rectangular MLB logo on the back of the hat and place a smaller WS patch there instead? Or have it embroidered? That would kill two birds with one proverbial stone: symmetry and WS logo size.
Ideas? Thoughts? Comments?

Because this would be like asking Budweiser to remove their logo from EVERYWHERE. Sure, they have born-on dating, Bud Select, and Bud Light, but it’s all under the guise of Budweiser / Anheiser-Busch (sp?). MLB is a corporation independent of the World Series, and should be recognized as such (in their eyes). Bud Select is made by Augustus Busch the 17th, and the World Series is put on by MLB. The corporation always comes before its subletted divisions.
Do I agree with this logic? Absolutely not. I think we should do away with advertising altogether because it’s just another way for something to tell me I’m an asshole. However, if you’re a parent company and your child is doing well, you’re going to want all the credit for yourself. Business defies family dynamics and logic. I took some Uni Liberty with this since it’s almost 3 am. Slainte.

The white on white with the black shoes look great. The burgundy pants were just plain ugly. The white on white look for the Skins is a good change, in my opinion.
