ive never been first. so im gonna post here with nothing to say. although the world series hat patches look ridiculous. theyve really lost any element of class. ok so maybe i said something

More on the Clemson grotesquely purple uniforms. Quoted from the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook -
“Clemson’s official colors are Northwestern purple (PMS 541) and burnt orange (PMS 165), but many of Clemson’s athletic uniforms are predominantly orange and white. According to legend, Clemson used to have pale purple and gold as the official colors until former football coach Jess Neely changed that because he wanted uniforms that were more colorfast. It seems that the weather and constant washings were causing the uniforms to fade. So Neely worked with the Clemson school of textiles and developed deeper colors for uniforms, colors that held up under the rays of the sun and the workings of the washing machines.”

That has to be the ugliest ‘burnt orange’ I have ever seen. Now THIS is burnt orange.

As for the World Series…I love Reyes’ socks, but that hat makes me want to wrap the brim around his neck to bend it.

the hat patches weren’t that bad. i for one thought the only eason verlander had such a bad ame was because the huge sleeve patch weighed his arm down.

Anyone else notice that two different types of 5950s were being worn last night. Some of the players are wearing hats with the gray underbill, but several players were wearing the new hat design with the black underbill. The lack of “uniformity” was very un-baseball. The black underbill is supposedly going to be the norm starting next year. It was also used during the WBC last spring. I prefer the gray, but I guess it’s not the end of the world if they use black underbills. That said, at least make everyone choose one or the other for the World Series.

I guess the players have a choice on which style hat they will wear.

Does anyone know if they sew the world series patches on to their old hats or if they get new ones. They might have a choice and that might explain the lack of consistancy in the underbills. The grey ones might be players who had them attached to their old ones whereas the black ones could be players who simply have new hats. I have no idea whether or not this is correct though but it is my best guess.

I don’t think the patches look that bad, but don;t you think they’re a little big?

Just for the record, I hate Clemson and I have been a Gamecock fan my whole life. That being said, at the risk of being “that guy,” I dont think the Clemson uniforms were that bad. I thought they would look a lot worse.

On another note, I liked the tiger hats with this logo on it. I just thought they should have had an all navy hat with it instead of one with an orange bill.

And…..forgot the link

http://ww2.esd.org/_...

Perhaps Verlander is hanging his head because the patch is so darn big it’s weighing his melon down.

I don’t think the design is too bad, but making it so big was a mistake. Now the hats are starting to look like those lame hats in the hat stores with everyone’s logo on them.

South Carolina class of 1996. GO COCKS!!!

The purple unis still are horrible. Maybe they’ll wear the all orange ones closer to halloween.

On another note….the Cocks looked good in their black jerseys yesterday. Click on the photo gallery link. Not a horrible use of black imo.

I don’t think the patch on the jersey is nearly as offensive as the patch on the hat. Teams almost always have a sleeve patch, and the WS patch on the right sleeve isn’t noticeably larger than most of them. The problem is that it’s not designed with the team’s jersey in mind, so it looks out of place.

The patch on the hat, on the other hand, is atrocious. Hat patches are always a bad idea–they ruin the symmetry of the design. This one is the worst I’ve ever seen, viz. the biggest. My guess is that MLB needed it to be that size so that the text would be legible. A better idea would have been to use an alternative version of the logo without any type–like maybe just the batter/globe portion of it–and then put it on there in a reasonable size. Not only would this look much better, but it would be a succesful branding decision as well: we’re certainly seeing enough of the logo, so seeing an alternate would be helpful.

Reyes’s socks are magnificent. They were even highter last night than in the NLCS. Did anyone notice how the socks have blue stripes on them as well as white? It was hard to see from the centerfield camera, but when they showed a closeup of the socks in the dugot (7th or 8th inning) it was plain to see. Nice!

whats on his undershirt collar?

I believe that’s the WS logo.
all too big and ill-placed.

Ramon Santiago and Curtis Granderson both had a large WS logo on their collars while the St. Louis players had the cardinals logo.

Trot Nixon was one who famously wore his ratty old hat and sewed the patch on. It looks like most get new hats.

I watched the whole game and never figured out what the Sooners RB, Patrick, has written on the tape on his arm.

will they put a ws patch on the bp hat for rodgers or will he wear a 5950 tonight?

In other news, the Bengals are ugly.

I guess the orange jerseys fit for the upcoming holiday, but still…

Seriously though, what is wrong with the Bengals today?

Anyone else completely sick of ABC/ESPN’s coverage of college football? The one thing that I hate more than anything else is how they’ll find some player’s family member and show them at minimum 5 times a game it gets so annoying. GAAAAAH.

I also noticed that TJ Whoseyomama is wearing all white shoes with some orange trim, while the rest of the Bengals are wearing the regular black shoes. I guess he’s too good to match the rest of the team?

Anyone know if the refs are wearing any of the pants today?

Blind jerk alert over at Yahoo! Sports:
Dan Wetzel says: “First let’s go to the garish red and white striped socks that are pulled up to the knee in a modern fashion faux pas so egregious you wouldn’t let the biggest dork on your neighborhood team, you know, the kid in right field more adept at picking daisies, dare wear them that way for fear of endless peer humiliation.”

I agree.. I remeber for last year’s Fiesta Bowl game between ND and Ohio State, they kept showing Brady Quinn’s sister in the stands anytime there was a big play. She was dating (and now maried to) AJ Hawk, linebacker for OSU. They had a pregame segment about it and the announcers made several references to her and her relationship to the two players throughout the game. It got real annoying, real fast.

Was just about to post that

He actually irons the bill of the hat to get it like that

Not sure if anyone has posted this or has seen it, but here’s a picture of a mismatched sleeve in baseball: Nippon Ham Fighters first baseman Fernando Seguignol

The refs in the Bengals game seem to be wearing white pants with some nice sock showing, and not the black roller hockey pants. Quite nice from the waist down…

I also noticed that TJ Whoseyomama is wearing all white shoes with some orange trim, while the rest of the Bengals are wearing the regular black shoes. I guess he’s too good to match the rest of the team?

Actually, it looks to me like all the receivers on the Bengals are wearing white shoes, though the ones whose mamas we know have black tape around the ankles.

Ok, so Houshmanzadeh (or whatever) now appears to have predominantly black shoes. I believe he had the white shoes on at the start of the second half, but seems to have changed mid-quarter.

Discuss.

And I’m talking to myself…

FOX just had this on their screen:

Interesting, but Useless Fact

The Bengals are 4-0 when wearing their orange jerseys.

Anyone know if the refs are wearing any of the pants today?

I sure hope so, if not, they will get arrested like the Lions assistant coach who was driving without his pants! (Sorry, couldn’t resist!!)

Ok, so Houshmanzadeh (or whatever) now appears to have predominantly black shoes. I believe he had the white shoes on at the start of the second half, but seems to have changed mid-quarter.

I’m surprised he was allowed to wear them that long, especially considering Matt Hasselback was told he couldn’t wear white shoe strings with his black shoes earlier in the year.

I had to step away from the TV for awhile and have not seen TJ since I’ve started watching again, so I don’t know what he’s currently wearing. It looks like the rest of receivers are wearing black shoes with LOTS of orange trim (esp. Chad Johnson)

Not sure if anyone has posted this or has seen it, but here’s a picture of a mismatched sleeve in baseball: Nippon Ham Fighters first baseman Fernando Seguignol

I actually don’t mind those Fighters’ uniforms; they look a lot better than the blue-and-orange-trimmed San Diego knockoffs that they had before moving to Sapporo.

And Seguignol hit a big homer tonight! Will Shinjo end his career on a Nippon Series champion team?

Yes it is a large and unsightly World Series logo like this one.

BTW, I don’t completely hate the hat patch but don’t you think this one would have looked much better?

This is how annoyingly uni-centric I am.

During said Fiesta Bowl, I complained every time they showed the Quinn sister, not because they were making a non-story into a story, but the fact her half OSU/ Half ND jersey featured a FAKE OSU JERSEY. The ND side was the traditional Blue home jersey. The Buckeye half WAS GREY. Couldn’t the person making the jersey at least get a real replica jersey to make the egregious bootleg sister quinn was wearing.

Another thing about ABC sports/ NCAA coverage- BRENT MUSSBERGER. I’ve hated him since the mid 80’s NBA on CBS.

What have you heard more from an announcer, that MacCarver was Lefty’s personal catcher, or that Brent Mussbarger went to Northwestern? A thousand scientists working for a thousand years couldnt possibly calculate either number.

Is anyone else feeling a weird vibe from the Broncos Browns game? Something is off, but I can’t quite place it…

are the browns wearing black socks?

are the browns wearing black socks?

Browns are wearing brown socks. They look black on the tube, but they are brown!

Today’s Boston Globe: Coming over to dark side
The Titans made a fashion statement last Sunday they may choose to stick with. Tennessee had gone 0-2 in white jerseys and 0-3 in dark jerseys this season, but was 0-0 in dark jerseys with dark pants, a combination punter Craig Hentrich wore at the team’s uniform unveiling in the spring of 1999 but had never been seen since. Willing to try anything, coach Jeff Fisher gave the team the option of going with the dark-on-dark look in Washington, and several players responded enthusiastically. The Titans defeated the Redskins, 25-22. “I was one of the many players that wanted to wear the blue on blue,” said running back Travis Henry, who ran for a career-high 178 yards. “Maybe we need to wear blue on blue at home. We’ll have to talk to Coach Fisher about that.”

Don’t know if it’s been brought up before, but wouldn’t the new black underbill make it easier for pitchers to hide a foreign substance under there?

Dick Jauron’s hat featured the old school Buffalo Bill’s logo, while his assistants had the modern one on.

His hat was like this one minus the wordmark:

Anyone watching the Minnesota-Seattle tilt? We can all be thankful that the Vikings have chosen their least bad uni combo with white-on-white. They are my team, but when the purple pants were introduced, I went into hiding for a few days.

Wow that hit on Peyton Manning was harsh! I was really really scared that I lost our quarterback. Fheww!

man, i would not want to be wearing the undershirts with the humongous world series patch on the neck. that would be bugging me so bad. has aby other teams put the patch on the neck like that before? i don’t think that i’ve seen that one before.

Not crazy about the stripes on the arms of the Browns jerseys that don’t go totally around the arm. It looks like they just stuck a triangular piece of material there to patch a hole. They should’ve just continued the brown of the jersey right to the end of the arm.

While it’s great news that there is minimal purple on the Viking todays, the all white combo does show off the fact that the white tops are designed to go with the purple pants. As now the side panels don’t match up anymore.

I have two comments/opinions on Nike’s uni this year.
1. Did anyone else notice how loose the U of MN’s jerseys ere during thier embarassing win against NDSU. They look like my jr high football team, small kids in big clothes. Heres a pic, not the best but you can still tell.

2. Has anyone seen the semi-circle cut out of the back of Nike’s jersey’s this year. I can’t think of any fuctional reason for this. Here is a pic of it during Miami’s shining moment of the season. Any ideas?

Nice article on Reyes and his socks.

Looks like Rogers is still wearing the BP hat tonight.

Also, looks like Edmonds is wearing an old Manchester United home shirt under his jersey (2003-2005ish), based on the sleeve patterns.

Anyone know who makes and sells the dotted sleeve jersey that Cubs pitcher Scott Williamson is wearing on 5/12? See

Since the White Sox broke out the dot matrix duing the Series last year, is Edmonds wearing next year’s official undershirt or his own creation?

No pic yet.

=/ Do we have to?

So this is why Kenny wears the BP hat instead of the regular one, the black underbill is easier to conceal pine tar on than the grey underbill, lol…

The Nike jerseys have a slit in the back to ease in the tucking in and pulling on over pads. It also reduces bulk in the butt pad area and in the pants in general when the jersey is tucked in.

I was reading my issue of this month’s GQ just now when I came across a small article about changes to some NBA teams’ uniforms for this upcoming season. I was all ready to type up a post saying how the article’s writer disliked purple on sports teams until I finished the article and saw the writer’s name: Paul Lukas. Well-done bit, Paul!

My only question is: In the article you said the Warriors’ “The City” throwback “is back in circulation“. Haven’t they been wearing these as alternates for the past couple seasons? I’m a Warriors fan, and I think I remember them wearing these throwbacks since the ‘04-’05 season. Or are you saying that the Warriors are planning on wearing the throwbacks more often this season?

They definitely wore them in 2004-05. But did they wear them last year? I’m not so sure.

Either way: I don’t think the “back in circulation” was my original wording — that piece was heavily edited. Haven’t actually gotten my own copy of it yet!

Ahh, gotcha. The Warriors did indeed wear them on occasion last year. Hopefully they bring them out even more this season. It would be nice for the Warriors to come up with a new uniform design based on the “The City” unis. The current Warrior unis are boring.

I can’t help but think that every time I see this it reminds me of this.

And one of the first things the announcers say, “Did ge cross the line??”

One other thing.. as someone who has some professional training, why would they move him without putting him on a backboard with head support????

you bet it will! check out what I caught on my High Def tivo, when on Aug 30 (game 2 vs. det.), yankees pitcher Proctor is loading up his thumb with the substance from his cap bill!!
(it looked much stickier and tar like when viewing LIVE!)

and in honor of Kenny Rogers also cheating tonight, I present:

What kind of bat does Pujols use? It looked like there was a Bat logo or something. Whatever it was its the first time I noticed anyone using something like that.

Could those sleeve patches and cap patches be any bigger?

Gotta go, Tigers are trying to go down the tubes after 2 out in the 9th….

It looks like Edmonds is wearing a jacket under his jersey… which seems unsual

Edmonds is wearing this.

It’s already been mentioned that Todd Jones’s jersey has a right sleeve that’s much smaller than the left (I’m sure this has something to do with his delivery, but why the hell is it such a big deal for Todd Jones?). Anyway, the huge-ass WS patch looks particularly god-awful on his jersey, since it takes up about 100% of the space on the sleeve. (No links, since I don’t feel like re-typing this 8 times)

It looks like Edmonds is wearing a jacket under his jersey… which seems unsual

My bad… I meant Edmonds is wearing this.

so Paul, can you explain why the Detroit D on the Tigers’ hats and on the field behind home plate have a straight double middle line (like here), when in the jersey, the double middle lines in the jersey are curved (like here)??

I wonder why the Redskins have decided to permanently go with the white/white combo? It was a “good luck” thing last season, I think, but this year, they’re not exactly burning up the NFL, and they’ve worn white/white every week. Are the burgundy pants gone forever? I thought that was a very good, timeless look for them (which makes sense, since they’ve been wearing that combo since the late ’70s).

speaking of the 59-50’s, was kenny rogers wearing one or one of those warm-up hats? the seams, bill, and material did not look right….

Nice to see the pitcher on the New Yorker cover has high socks.

speaking of the 59-50’s, was kenny rogers wearing one or one of those warm-up hats? the seams, bill, and material did not look right….

As usual, Kenny was wearing the BP hat, which is also known as the 3930. A good way to tell the difference is the lack of space between the bottom seam and the bottom of the hat. The 5950 has a space, while the 3930 does not.

Also, the fabrics are different. The 3930 is made with a moisture wicking material which I believe is mostly polyester, while the 5950s are wool.

*cough* I own both, and I apparently know way too much about this, but I hope that was a little helpful.

so Paul, can you explain why the Detroit D on the Tigers’ hats and on the field behind home plate have a straight double middle line (like here), when in the jersey, the double middle lines in the jersey are curved (like here)??

Full coverage of this phenomenon coming either Monday or Tuesday on ESPN.com.

Albert Pujols’ bat is a Sam Bat. It is a Candaian Company owned by Wilson.

Also, the fabrics are different. The 3930 is made with a moisture wicking material which I believe is mostly polyester, while the 5950s are wool.

And a quick tag check confirms it. The 5950s are 100% wool, whereas the BP caps are 100% poly.

Kenny’s lucky that he just has to black out a stripe on the brim, most MLB teams’ BP hats are a good bit different from what they wear during games.

I was wondering if there has been a feature on Umpire uniforms and their transformation…The ump behind the plate wore a “suit” jacket. However, he has also wore a regular polo shirt in the past. Umps used to wear league specific uniforms (when there were specific NL and AL umpires) and their uniforms have evolved along with the players.

I was wondering if there has been a feature on Umpire uniforms and their transformation…

Look here. Also here.

You know I jokingly brought it up earlier, but it seems much more relevant now after hearing Kenny Rogers’ ridiculous “big clump of dirt” explanation. The BP hat not only has the black bill (much easier to conceal something like pine tar than on the gray underbill of the 5950) which several of you have already mentioned, but it’s also much more cooperative than the 5950 in holding a curve of the bill. Think about all the underbrim writing Paul has covered, most of the scribbling we see are with guys with hats sporting fairly flat bills. Rogers keeps a pretty nice curve on the bill of that BP cap, which on top of the dark underbill, would keep a foreign substance more easily concealed from photographs. Now I’m not accusing Kenny Rogers of using the BP hat specifically to cheat, but it certainly is something to think about after tonight.

I liked the Longhorns’ all-white look, except for on Sweed. He’s so skinny, his pants looked like longjohns.

The Vikings have completely whipped me. I found myself thinking, “That’s not so bad” while watching them. I was especially fascinated by the stripe on Chester Taylor’s leg because it kept disappearing and reappearing as he ran—especially on his TD run. I couldn’t stop watching that damn stripe play hide-and-seek with the camera. I think I need an intervention.

Oh, and I was happy to see the return of Polanco’s blue hoodie—it gave me something to laugh at.

Big shout-out to Paul Lukas from Newsday today: Sportswriter Ken Davidoff referenced the Buckner Cubs-glove bit that was on Uniwatch the other day. And he linked to the website for good measure. Well done!

I love HD-Tivo! Greatest invention ever made. On that note, they had a closeup of Kenny Rogers while he was interviewed and sure enough, he wears a 3930 BP cap. The bill is blacked out (and in HD it’s easy to see they did a piss-poor job of it, the edge is more grey than black); you can also see the waffle-type design on the 3930 clearly. In contrast, they had Craig Monroe on there as well and you could see he was wearing a 5950 wool cap, not the one that Rogers was wearing. Cool stuff.

I don’t know…. it dipped down into the ’30’s while they were out there playing. I might wear one of those Majestic dugout jackets under my jersey if it was me. :P

maybe it was the huge patches that looked like they where falling off(nice bike shorts Mr. Winslow), or maybe all browns vs. broncos games should look like this

Since MLB owns the MLB logo on the hat, and the World Series logo on the hat, why don’t they remove the little rectangular MLB logo on the back of the hat and place a smaller WS patch there instead? Or have it embroidered? That would kill two birds with one proverbial stone: symmetry and WS logo size.

Ideas? Thoughts? Comments?

Because this would be like asking Budweiser to remove their logo from EVERYWHERE. Sure, they have born-on dating, Bud Select, and Bud Light, but it’s all under the guise of Budweiser / Anheiser-Busch (sp?). MLB is a corporation independent of the World Series, and should be recognized as such (in their eyes). Bud Select is made by Augustus Busch the 17th, and the World Series is put on by MLB. The corporation always comes before its subletted divisions.

Do I agree with this logic? Absolutely not. I think we should do away with advertising altogether because it’s just another way for something to tell me I’m an asshole. However, if you’re a parent company and your child is doing well, you’re going to want all the credit for yourself. Business defies family dynamics and logic. I took some Uni Liberty with this since it’s almost 3 am. Slainte.

The white on white with the black shoes look great. The burgundy pants were just plain ugly. The white on white look for the Skins is a good change, in my opinion.
