Stupidmismatchedsleeves. I hate WV anyways (as a Pitt fan).
Look at this picture of Najeh Davenport’s socks. I watched the game and didn’t notice, but was the black part of his socks so HUGE all game?
#2 by Kevin @ Fanblogs.com on 10.21.06 8:54 am |
I’m pretty sure the mismatched shirt is the Nike undershirt that many of the schools are wearing. WVU’s a Nike team, so that would just stand to reason, although I don’t remember seeing them wear it in any other games this year. Guess it’s just getting cold enough.

what horrid uni’s.
just another example of something we will look back at in a few years and say “what the hall were we thinking…that looks stupid”
some of us are already saying that though!
#4 by Jeff E. on 10.21.06 9:54 am |
As much as the NFL is a stickler for uniform regs and standards, I’m surprised they’re not stricter about the wide variety of sock styles that are worn. I know they’ve fined some players in the past, but that was generally for gross violations, e.g., Clinton Portis and his one multi-striped sock. Instead of wearing two socks on each foot/leg, couldn’t one sock with the team’s color scheme at the top half and white at the bottom half be made? That would eliminate some of the leotard looks and what Davenport looks like. Since I don’t play football, maybe there’s a reason two socks are worn?
#5 by Chuck D on 10.21.06 10:03 am |
I noticed WVU’s helmets had a metallic finish that sparkled in the stadium lights. Do any other teams do this? (NCAA or NFL)
#6 by John Ekdahl on 10.21.06 10:11 am |
The thing that annoys me about those undersleeves is that the yellows don’t really match.
#7 by Shane on 10.21.06 10:35 am |
Bleh. That just looks stupid.
At least it’s not Va Tech’s sleeve disaster, though.
#8 by DarkAudit on 10.21.06 10:37 am |
The Morgantown Dominion-Post reports that WVU is 5-0 in that uniform combo. So they’ll be keeping it around a bit longer.
#9 by Griff on 10.21.06 10:41 am |
I noticed that too… but I believe that it looked metallic due to the drizzle that stuck to the players helmets.

Ohio State comes to mind.
#11 by Eric G. on 10.21.06 11:14 am |
I think since Michigan is a Nike team as well, that specific color combination was made for them (it does look like maize and blue), but West Virginia probably got them for their players since it seems close enough to their gold-like color.
#12 by John Ekdahl on 10.21.06 11:21 am |
That’s a reasonable assumption. Says a lot about Nike’s respect for WVU’s program if they’re getting Michigan hand-me-downs (if true).

I made mention of this a few weeks ago. I believe low whites are becoming as bad as the pajama problem. I much perfer a little more white to show.

I know theres not a lot of interest in basketball uni watching, but I have a question. When 2 people on the same team have the same last name, do you have to put the first initials of each player on their back? Is it a rule or just something teams do for clarity? Is it enforced in all sports?
I ask this because of the Denver Nuggets having Joe Smith and J.R. Smith on their team this year. I figured, since they can’t have two J. Smith’s, then would J.R. have his whole name printed on his back? Or would they elect to using his real names initial (Earl)? So far in preseason, they’re both just wearing “Smith”:
J.R. Smith
Joe Smith
#20 by Mr. Met on 10.21.06 1:37 pm |
I know that the Mets don’t put first initials on the backs of their jerseys. They had Orlando Hernandez and Roberto Hernandez on the roster this year, and they each had “Hernandez” on the backs of their jerseys, with no distinguishing first inital. Which leads me to think that each sports league handles it differently.
#21 by Rick on 10.21.06 1:43 pm |
That is one of my biggest pet peaves. Paul told me that the NFL has a rule stating that the full names have to be used. I asked because the Cleveland Browns had 2 players with the same names (Andra Davis & Andre’ Davis). It fries my eggs because in my opinion isn’t that the reason that each player has a number? Shouldn’t that enough to identify each player? I guess not.
Now stepping off soapbox.
#22 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 1:48 pm |
watching the PSU/Ill game i’ve noticed that Illinois has “TEAM” on their nose bumper (i think that’s the right term) dont know if anyone’s mentioned this yet but i thought Big Ten teams had the Big Ten logo on there. Anyone know if this is a requirment for teams in the conference, i guess not. Also, the PSU helmets are a lot plainer than i thought. They have no numbers, decals or warning labels on the back. Making them even more impresssive.
#23 by Mycoskie on 10.21.06 1:52 pm |
In baseball, at least, there’s not a hard and fast rule. When Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and Alex Rodriguez were both on the Rangers, they both simply had Rodriguez on the back with no initials. I asked the equipment manager about that, and he said something to effect of, “if fans don’t know who they are without an initial, they’re just plain stupid.”
#24 by Steve-O on 10.21.06 1:57 pm |
I just want to take a moment and brag about how classy my high school football team’s road unis look. Nice silver hat, beautiful jersey with nice shoulder stripes and no names on the back, and pants with some good striping. Just all around nice.
here’s a better view of the pants with last year’s jersey pants
this photo also slightly shows the sock scheme we have.
#25 by Robert on 10.21.06 2:20 pm |
Many people grossly overrate the quality of Texas’ uniforms. While their home look is ok, and I concede that they have a great helmet, their road uniform looks like something that should be worn only in practice.

The ND-UCLA game has just started, and I’m seeing the UCLA jerseys “in action” for the first time. When Paul first showed the new jerseys, I (like a lot of people) wasn’t crazy about the navy blue outline around the numbers, etc. However, now seeing them with the helmuts, I like them better. It nicely ties in the uniform with the navy blue “UCLA” script on the helmuts.
#30 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 2:53 pm |
Here’s your mismatched sleve inspiration, obviously. (Gotta give Paul credit for that one though, he used that about a year ago when the whole epidemic broke out)

dear nike-
whoever designs your “mis-matched” sleeve design apparel, needs to take a drug test. no one in their right mind designs those while sober. you need to go back to the simplistic jersey design like penn state; simple but beautiful. (i hate psu, but hands down they have the best uniforms in the nation) im all for nike’s “futuristic” jersey designs, on teams like mizzou, clemson, oregon, and miami (fla), but the “mis-matched” sleeves got to go

Ok, i’ve been thinking about this one for a while now. Is it just me, or are the teams outfitted by adidas wearing nicer uni’s these days? I mean honestly. Wisconsin, Nebraska, UCLA, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kansas, and of course Notre Dame.
Few other notes concerning this topic:
- adidas straightened out the Kansas jerseys that Nike previously made. Nothing was wrong with the old design, but they had the wrong color blue .
- A lot of the teams two stripes on their pants (see Nebraska, Arkansas, Tennessee and Wisconsin). It would make mores sense to add an extra stripe so they could have three stripes.
Finally, while adidas teams uniforms tend to be more classy, we all make mistakes. Even though i believe those designs (Falcons esque) are the remanints of their Reebok tenure, maybe i’m wrong about that.

The Arizona Diamondbacks had this issue come up twice this season. While Shawn Green was still with the DBacks he and Andy Green both wore “GREEN” on their jerseys. Luis, Edgar, and Enrique Gonzalez all wore “GONZALEZ.” If I remember correctly when Edgar Gonzalez was a rookie in 2003 he had to wear “E.GONZALEZ” while Luis had only his last name, no initial.
#35 by Brandon on 10.21.06 4:22 pm |
About the stripes that design really is a 3 stripe design because the white in the middle counts as a stripe, if they were to add another color stripe it would be considered a 5 stripe design.
#36 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 4:23 pm |
after reading my last post (#32) i realized that the picture i posted of the Tennessee uniforms is from last year. Because of this, the picture i provided did not match my later point saying that Tennessee had 2 pant stripes, because the stripes were readded this year after a long time of having plain white pants.

#39 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 4:30 pm |
Good point, but what i was trying to say is that it would make more sense if they had an extra colored stripe, like this because i’m pretty sure most people don’t associate that design as a five stripe design. But i guess that would be concidered a logo creep, which is another reason adidas uni’s are great, not that big of a logo creep. (minus the Brady Quinn picture above)
#40 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 4:33 pm |

This reminds me of when Randy Bass played for the Hanshin Tigers in the 1980s. He had “R.BASS” (note no space after the period; Japanese teams are notoriously undiligent about these rules of typography) on his back, despite there not being anone else named Bass on the Tigers when he joined, or in any other previous season, or on any team in the history of Japanese baseball. Maybe he requested the R himself for some reason.

Northwesterns unis look like they are straight out of The Jetsons cartoon this afternoon! About the Detroit Tigers, did they downsize the “D’ on their caps? it looks small to me. GO CARDS!!!
#43 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 5:00 pm |
i doubt they’d change their caps from one series to the next. then again, they have to add the WS patch, and i’m not sure if they get new caps for the fall classic or if they just add them to the current caps. paul?
#44 by Matt B on 10.21.06 5:47 pm |
Halfway thru the 3rd and nobody has commented on the black FSU unis in action? Maybe some things are better left unsaid on a family website.
I don’t think the null space between two like-colored stripes on a solid background counts as a third stripe vis-a-vis Adidas branding.
Perhaps Texas should wear a colored belt to break-up the untard look?
#45 by Banker Bill on 10.21.06 5:56 pm |
You forgot Anderson Hernandez - they had 3 Hernandez’ on the roster at once.
#46 by Ted Howell on 10.21.06 5:56 pm |
Much thanks to Paul for the comment, and apologies for accidentally misspelling his name. How embarassing!
In response to the World Series uni advantage,I’m going to go with the Cardinals, although both teams sport classic, lovely designs. The Olde English “D” is great, and the Tigers have a better cap, but I adore the Cardinals double-birded bat design. If the Cardinals wear their silly two-toned hat (dark blue with the red brim) they temporarily lose the uni advantage.
Either way, it’s going to be a sartorially satisfactory Series.
#47 by BurghFan on 10.21.06 6:19 pm |
I think the NBA has a rule that players with the same last name have to be distinguished, and that their real name has to be used. (The Cavaliers would have had to use “John Williams” instead of “Hot Rod Williams”.)
Is there a picture of the backs of the new Wizards jerseys floating around? I’m impressed by the stars in the trim that reference the old Bullets’ unis.
#48 by Ben on 10.21.06 6:50 pm |
I knew that the horrendous West Virginia unis were going to be discussed today. I actually ended up watching the second half of the game with my fiancee’s 84 year old grandma and she couldnt stand the sleeves. But, if you watch the game closely enough you would have noticed some of the playes had 2 sleeves, some had only 1 long sleeve usually the left one, and others were short-sleeved completely. I found that more annoying. But the worst part are those side panels. Can we get some Queer (eye for the straight guy) guys to supervise all uni decisions for all sports from now on. Though then we might have more purple and pink.
#49 by Shane on 10.21.06 7:11 pm |
I’m all for more fashion tilted uni designs. Marc Jacobs did a line of skateboard shoes for Vans, why not sports uniforms?

Watching my Vols pull off the comeback win vs Bama, I saw someone on the Tennessee bench with 615 written on his eye black strips, a la Reggie Bush. They only showed the guys face but I’m guessing its Sophomore RB Arian Foster, because he’s from the San Diego area. Heck, maybe it’ll add something to his game.
#51 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 7:19 pm |
Yea, i’ve noticed that too over the past few weeks. I mean the multi-colored sleeve thing doesnt bother me too much, i dont really like it, but what i dont like is when players only wear one sleeve. And it’s not limited to football only. Sure Iverson and Carmelo wear sleeves, but what I don’t understand is why Nick Swisher does it
#52 by Joe on 10.21.06 7:23 pm |
Get ready to throw up one way or the other. Clemson is currently wearing orange jerseys and purple pants during warm-ups. Chris Fowler just said that, as was discussed in here one day earlier in the week, that the rumor is they will be switching to purple jerseys prior to game time. It’s about to get ugly!
#53 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 7:23 pm |
Ok watching ESPN just now, they showed Clemson in the pregame and they were wearing their orange jersies with the purple pants. ugh! and if that wasnt bad enough, Fowler said they may switch it up when the go into the locker room before they start, Purple top, orange bottom. Right after that, they were going to commercial and the announcer, name slips my mind, said “mixing orange and purple, not a good idea. probably be better to have purple and purple.” as much as this site is anti-purple, i’ve gotta agree with that.
#54 by Matt E. on 10.21.06 7:50 pm |

#56 by Smail on 10.21.06 7:51 pm |
Not only did Clemson come out in all purple, the jerseys and pants aren’t the same purple!
I suppose it’s possible that it’s just their undershirts “tinting” the jerseys differently, but it still looked horrendous as they came running towards the field.

While watching the Clemson game I had to adjust the color on my TV. Thankfully due to modern technology they are now wearing navy on my TV… I may even try it in black and white to see if that helps
#60 by Josh W. on 10.21.06 8:01 pm |
haha, looking at the time of the posts we put said that at the same time, but apparently yours was first Joe. Sorry for the redundancy.
Anyways, i meant to mention this earlier.
Here’s my take on the single sleeved jerseys. Not saying I liked the idea at all, however, i did like the Virginia Tech and Miami (minus the fact that they wore all green that game) over the Florida single sleeve jerseys, for the fact that it looked like they fit more. Florida’s jerseys looked random, in fact when I first saw them before last year’s game, i thought that the orange sleeve was just a temporary cover for the sleeve, then i remembered the VT game that thursday. Anyways, they were just random and did not match the stripes on the other sleeve. With Virginia Tech and Miami at least theirs went with the flow of their jerseys and somewhat fit in.

Paul-
I was wondering if you have ever done a piece on helmet stickers and how different teams distribute them. Being a non football player I was wondering the specifics of how various teams distribute them. Obviously I know the basics. the better you play the more you get. but the logical thought says that there must be a system of some sort per team. Thanks

paul- my girlfriend just asked me about this same thing. thats not a knock against you, because sticker distribution is sometimes confusing. hers what MY team does…
so heres how it goes.
teams that give “pride” stickers give them for…
quaterbacks get them for TDs, 1st downs, Passes over 20 yards, high completion percentage etc.
recievers- 100 yard games, TDs, 1st down catches, catches over 15 yards, etc.
running backs- 100 yard games, TDs, broken tackles, pass blocking, runs over 10 yards, etc.
offensive lineman- pancake blocks, high rushing totals, give the QB “time” in the pocket, etc.
defensive lineman- tackles, tipped passes, sacks, low rushing totals, ints, forced/recovered fumbles, INTs etc.
linebackers- tackles, sacks, INTs, forced/recovered fumbles, low rushing totals, tipped passes, etc.
defensive backs- tackles, sacks, INTs, forced/recovered fumbles, tipped passes, etc.
kickers/punters- non-returnable kicks (touchbacks, punts that are fair caught) high kicking percentage, field goals, extra points, yes even tackling!

a few notes from World Series game 1 because everyone else seems to still be watching college football. First, St Louis pitcher Anthony Reyes is rocking the old school striped socks. Second, when Yadier Molina was up to bat in the 2nd he not only seemed to be wearing some sort of ankle guard outside his pants which would hurt if he ended up needing to slide his top button on his jersey was unbuttoned- sloppiness in the World Series, how rude.

clemson’s original colors were purple and orange. for a time there ( sorry i dont know the dates) they were orange and blue. I love the low whites movement. Isn’t the objective to see your teams color more prominently than every sports seemingly ubiquitous white? I’ll take number 24 over number 72 any day. I’m a Giants fan, so look at Tiki. Those socks are low, and they look great. Another G-Men low sock example: Shockey vs Falcons. Those Falcon socks look better than those Giant socks? It almost looks as though those birds (Falcons) are wearing knee pads. You want white in your socks? Look here. With this Eagles photo, I’m with you. But only in congruence with the “Ditch the Black” campaign. As much as I think Terrell Owens is a disgrace to professionalism ANYWHERE, his socks look good.

Ok Ben, i could be wrong here but, it seems like you dont know very much about baseball. Top buttons on jerseys arent buttoned a lot of the time. Reyes almost always shows the striped stirrups. Molina, you’re kidding right? Ankle guard? It’s probably a shin guard, very very very common among major leaguers. I’m not watching the game so i could be wrong, but is the thing on his ankle here what you’re talking about?

McCarver mentioned earlier that Anthony Reyes actually irons the bill of his cap. I still think the straight bill is silly but he does get points for being that dedicated.
His old school stirrups rock. McCarver mentioned them, too, saying something to the effect that not many players do that anymore (high socks). Which is sad. Everyone should wear high socks in baseball.

Reyes has to show the sock stripage to make up for how goofy his hat looks. Cards need to ditch the dark blue on the road though and go back to red caps.
My main beef is with the Tigers names on the back of their home whites. The names look out of place. They should go to numbers only for the whites, which would clearly give them a 2-0 lead heading to St. Louis.

I have to think Paul took one look at the Clemson purple on purple action just to see if it really happened, then curled up on his living room floor in the fetal position, with a bottle of something nice, and is waiting patiently for the apocolypse.

Those World Series patches are monstrous! On the hats, they look bigger than the actual team logos, and they look especially huge (and ugly) on the jersey sleeves. Also, I swear I saw one Tiger player wearing a turtleneck with an enormous MLB 2006 patch on the neck (it looked like a damn bow tie, the thing was so big!). Why not just have the players wear big sandwich boards that say “WORLD SERIES 2006″ and be done with it?

If it was up to FOX, they’d put the players in world series unforms, like little league, but the backs would have “Prison Break” and “Bones” on the back.

Whatever happened to Champion Sporting Goods?
I know they were formerly based in upstate NY [Rochester] and were bought out more than a decade ago by a larger apparel manufacturer. I used to go to their outlet stores to pick up some misprinted reverse weave sweatshirts and other goodies - cheap!
I know they used to provide jerseys to some NFL teams - the Bills (naturally) and the J-E-T-S, back in the OJ/Namath era and later.

Last season the Kurt Thomas and Tim Thomas both played for the Phoenix Suns. They both wore just their last names on their jerseys. Kurt was hurt for the second half of the season, so the only game they played in together was game 6 against the Mavericks, but they both wore just “THOMAS” on their backs. They played together on the Knicks as well, but I don’t know what their jerseys said back then.
The Suns have two players with the same last name this season: James Jones and Jumaine Jones. They actually talked about it on the Suns media day. The players themselves didn’t even know whether they’d have to wear “Ja.JONES” and “Ju.JONES” or just “JONES.” I’ll be at the preseason game Monday so I’ll check out their jerseys.

You don’t have to be a good football school to rock the multi-colored sleves. The crappy guys at Duke were rocking them. Sorry no pics.

Being from upstate NY, I miss Champion outlets, too. Maybe this site could be of help…

Ted Turner couldn’t do that with Andy “Channel 17″ Messerschmidt. However, I could see MLB being subservient enough to a broadcaster to allow that nowadays.

…that last was hyperbole, btw.

interesting cross-branding going on during the ND vs UCLA game today.
UCLA (an Adidas team) had most of their skill players wearing Cutters gloves with the Adidas equipment logo stitched onto the strap like number 23 here.
the Irish have worn Cutters for a long time, always without logos. The Cutters logo is usually on the strap in big letters, but ND has a plain strap. For example, Jeff Samardzija.

The Cardinals have used the same stirrup style since the “Gas House Gang” of the 1930’s! Dizzy Dean wore those socks! Pepper Martin wore those socks! So did Stan The Man, Enos Slaughter, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, and Ozzie Smith… if’n I had my way, all the Cardinals would show the stripes!
BTW, the “Bird” hat is worn as a PB hat and as an “alternate” hat for Sunday home games during the regular season. The Cards wore a similar hat in 1941.

Several thoughts to add:
1. Clemson’s uni’s are horrible.
honestly really disturbing.
2. I actually kind of like the FSU uniforms.(except for the lighting bolt undershirt sleeves)
I think monochrome (esp. black/black white/white) works kind of well when teams wear really low socks(i.e. Texas, and FSU) and the “un-conquered” is actually kind of cool. but if they wear this jersey again, they might want to change it to something more centered around their team than the seminole tribe(to avoid people saying that FSU is “unconquered”)
3.) as for the tenessee player having “615″ on his eye black, that’s the area code for the Nashville, so he probably wouldn’t be from San Diego like Reggie Bush(619, i saw him play in high school)
4.) cutters football gloves are very popular and high quality, both for skill position players, and lineman. they just don’t look as fancy as some of the new Rbk or nike ones.

To possibly embarass myself anymore:
I would have to say I would really like oregon’s uniforms if they’d just get rid of the metal tread pattern on shoulders and knees, and change the number type face.

They got out of the custom uniform business at least 15 years ago and sold their name. Recently the name was owned by Sara Lee (The cake people) who based the operations out of North Carolina. Their reverse weave hoods are still nice, not the top of the line anylonger, and they’re made overseas now.

I watched the 2nd half of the game on a black and white tv, and in Clemson’s defense the jerseys really don’t look that bad in black and white. :) Unfortunateley, it’s a different story for those who had to see the game in color. :)

615 is the Nashville, TN and surrounding areas area code. A list of possible canditates are:
LaMarcus Coker
Walter Fisher
David Holbert
Austin Rodgers
Ryan West.
As you can see in (it will be the top picture on this page) foster did not have eye black on.

Meh, I don’t think WVU’s unis are bad at all and as for the mismatched sleeve, another meh. I find it very amusing that you people get screamingly apoplectic over such stupid and utterly trivial things.
As for the metallic finish to the helmet, yep. that’s what the majority of pro and college football teams have done or will do in the next few years.

I have two comments/opinions on Nike’s uni this year.
1. Did anyone else notice how loose the U of MN’s jerseys ere during thier embarassing win against NDSU. They look like my jr high football team, small kids in big clothes. Heres a pic, not the best but you can still tell.
http://sports.espn.g...
2. Has anyone seen the semi-circle cut out of the back of Nike’s jersey’s this year. I can’t think of any fuctional reason for this. Here is a pic of it during Miami’s shining moment of the season. Any ideas?

That is Nike’s “rear bib” design. Its only function is to promote Nike.

The flat/ironed bill seems to be a product of SoCal baseball as I’ve seen many players (high school up through college) wearing extremely flat bills on the field here in Southern California….
case in point…
