the original Sonics logo also featured an apparent four-panel ball, as did this later version.

though now that i look at them closely, if this is a four-panel ball, isn't this as well? and this?

and while i'm at it, this original Pistons logo absolutely dominates the four-panel.
Agreed that John Madden well needs to retire from color commentating. He never gives new insight to the games. But when do Morgan and McCarver add situational insight?

bang all you want on morgan and mccarver... at least they add situational insight...
the real captain obvious is john madden... that guy does a game like he is talking to people who are watching football for the first time in their lives... i feel like a dipshit when i watch a game he does... like its remedial football...

dont get me started on duke vitale either...
You people don't get it, do you.

Madden, as well as Macarver, hell just about every single "analyst/color commentator" out there doesn't get into complicated detail because they have been told again and again, and they also know that there are al arge number of very casual watchers of sports who will be watching theg ames, and to start bleating about how "the weakside safety will cheat up while the strongside linebacker fakes a blitz, while the cornerbacks drop into a Cover 2 scheme which makes the quarterback audible from a deep hitch and go to a halfback toss" will make channels change faster then you can blink.

Christ, I know a ton about football and even I'd be bored to tears by that kind of shit.

And if you all hate (insert color commnetators name here) then just use the fucking mute button on your remote and either turn on the radio broadcast or just watch without any sound.

Finally, it's all well and good to bleat and shriek that "such and such announcer sucks" but when you don't give any credible alternatives, what miniscule credibility that you may have had goes straight into the garbage.

Madden may be bad, but no one can come close to Joe Theisman in the booth. The man is horrendous. His commentary is a train wreck of vagueness of self evident observations. And he doesn't get any of Kornheiser's jokes (not that they are that funny). And the fact that his name is actually pronounced 'Theee-man', but he changed it in college to rhyme it with Heisman just makes me hate him more.
Don't think it was his idea to change his name (though he OBVIOUSLY signed off on the idea). It was the Notre Dame sports marketing department (or whatever it was called back in the day) that came up with the idea.

I actulally find it amusing . . .especially since he finished second in the balloting.
That it was Notre Dame's Athletic Dept. that probably came up with the idea is a fair point, but that he still uses that pronunciation today (especially since he didn't win the Heisman) smacks of self promotion and unquenchable ego.

This fact by itself is amusing, but coupled with his banality in the booth and the fact that, like Joe Morgan in baseball, he clearly thinks the game is not as good as when he played makes him insufferable. His voice makes me think about taking a baseball bat and going 'Office Space' on my tv.

Anyone else watching the WVU/UConn game? Well, WVU is sporting the infamous two-color nike sleeves. Aside from the abomination that are the WVU unis, UConn's unis, despite the monochrome look, are pretty nice. It's a nice classic white a blue combo while not trying to be flashy. Classy always works.
UConn's number typeface is the best in all of sports.

Just a Heads up. Tomorrow the University of Minnesota are wearing their throwback jerseys from sometime in the 1960's (I'm blanking on the exact year).

What about 1968 - Same teams, or was that during the Cardinals all red, all the time phase?
I think the Tigers were ahead of their time. The home and road caps is a relatively new look. Most teams were like the Yankees are now, One cap two unis. Just my unresearched thoughts.
Lots of home-road ballcap combinations overlooked from the '70s and '80s -- Brewers (blue cap with two gold panels in front; all blue), Pirates (black pillbox; gold pillbox with black bill), Athletics (green skull/yellow bill; white skull/green bill), Blue Jays (blue cap with two white panels in front; all blue), Reds (white pinstriped skull/red bill; all red), Twins (all navy; red skull/navy bill), White Sox (blue cap/two white front panels/red bill; all blue).

Sorry, no time to find links.
