The World Series starts this weekend. And for reader Brad Bierman, that means only one thing: a new World Series sleeve patch will make its appearance.
Not that Bierman is in any suspense regarding what the patch will look like, mind you — he’s already got one, in fact, which he’s mounted on his complete display of World Series sleeve patches. And that’s just a small portion of his patch collection.
Bierman, a former radio sportscaster who lives outside of Philly, approached me back in March at the Uni Watch Athletics Aesthetics Party, where he showed me photos from his extensive stash of jersey patches. He later sent me a bunch of other patch-centric info, most of which I haven’t yet fully followed up on (sorry, Brad — it’ll happen, I promise).
Anyway, with the baseball’s season-ending showcase about to start, here’s Bierman’s commentary on some World Series patches from the past two decades:
1987: The first year of a WS jersey patch. It was worn only by the Cardinals, not by the Twins.
1989: Always wondered how MLB managed to add the great “Battle of the Bay” slogan for the A’s/Giants Series in such a short time between the LCS and the WS.
1991: The Twins had to remove their 30th-anniversary patch from their right sleeve in order to make room for this patch in the Series.
1994: No World Series because of the strike, but there was still a patch, which resembled the 1993 and 1992 designs.
1995: In an attempt to put something “hip” into marketing its glamour event after the 1994 strike, MLB also used an alternate WS logo, adding the
“Welcome To The Show” phrase first uttered by Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) in the 1988 movie Bull Durham.1997: Neither the Marlins nor the Indians actually wore this patch on their jerseys. Each club had its team logo patch on the left sleeve; the Marlins had their version of the Jackie Robinson 50th-anniversary patch on their right sleeve, and the Indians’ right sleeve had the 1997 All-Star Game patch. The WS patch was worn on jackets and by the umpires.
2000: Always wondered why MLB couldn’t have added “Subway Series”
somewhere to the WS patch, as was done for the same market Bay Area series in 1989. With modern marketing the way it is, most likely the logo had already been released to so many places and could not be changed.2005: A rare use of the MLB logo with the blue and red colors fields reversed. [Probably my favorite of all the WS patches, because the autumnal color scheme is perfect for the Fall Classic. — PL]
When I asked Bierman if he also had a full set of World Series cap patches, which have been appearing in the Series since 1996, he replied, “I do not have the cap patches — I hate the whole concept. An extra patch does not belong on such a small uniform piece.” Now that’s hardcore — zero tolerance, baby!
Bierman offered the following thoughts on patch collecting:
Acquiring patches pre-Internet meant working directly with the few dealers out there or seeing them at sports card/memorabilia shows, especially the annual National Show each summer, and a few big regional shows in the northeast (Murf Denny deserves a mention here, as I was able to get patches early on from him), or from equipment managers, especially in the pre-memorabilia craze that began to hit in the mid- to late 1980s.
Since the eBay era arrived, it has made collecting the last 8-10 years a whole new ballgame. Have met a few incredible people that share an intense “patch passion” and knowledge. This includes Richard Feltoon in New Jersey — found him through a Miami Dolphins fan web site looking for their 30th-anniversary patch of the undefeated 1972 team, worn in a Monday Night game in 2002. Great guy (who also happens to be the official online/retail outlet for all Gumby-related products).
I have six large boards with all the MLB team commemoratives (minus most memorial patches), and two boards for the NFL teams. I have a smaller NHL board (Flyers and some league-wide patches), four major college bowl game national championship patch years, the first two new NCAA basketball Final Four patches started in 2005, and a few NBA anniversary patches and NBA Finals. A great patch I won on eBay this summer came from another nice guy I got to know through eBay in California (unfortunately, he had to sell part of his collection to raise funds): an original 1973 Yankee Stadium 50th-anniversary patch, (as seen on an SI cover that summer).
Big thanks to Brad for sharing his collection and his expertise. Now let’s hope the Mets are the other team that’ll be wearing that 2006 World Series patch this Saturday.
Mea Culpa Dept.: Yesterday’s entry about the logo implications of the new NBA ball had two omissions: (1) My list of teams with ball-inclusive logo designs should have included the Kings; and (2) I inexcusably neglected to mention that the guy who brought this issue to my attention in the first place was reader Alex Gordon. He’s also done some interesting historical research regarding older NBA logos and balls, which I’ll present as a follow-up item either tomorrow or next week.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of patches, was that a nicotine patch that Endy Chavez was sporting last night, or did he just cut himself shaving? … “Logo creep or creepy logos?” That’s what Rob Schmoll wants to know after seeing this story about a new plan to make MLB logos available for placement on caskets and urns. … Kudos to Wade Harder, who’s come up with a really unique example of a football helmet with a logo on one side and a number on the other: “For the 1987 football season, Vanderbilt wore the split scheme with the school’s logo on the right side of the helmet and number 73 on the left side, a tribute to the death of teammate Paul Lomanto. I remember this because my family actually had Vanderbilt season tickets at the time.” … Eric Glickman has noticed that the logos of the last six teams to defeat the Yankees in the postseason spell out how the Bombers have fared in October since winning it all in 2000. … The Rockies will be switching to CoolFlo helmets next season — further details in the “On the Rox” section toward the bottom of this page. … Thomas Harding, who broke that Rockies news for MLB.com, also sent along this photo, which shows Bobby Layne with his crotch extension exposed. Wait, make that his jersey’s crotch extension. … Bryan Redemske notes that Carlos Delgado wears a really tiny glove for infield practice. … Horn-Toot Dept.: Yesterday’s Bill Buckner column on ESPN was a big hit.

What, nothing on the Mets unis last night?
#2 by Ken S. on 10.19.06 9:03 am |
With a Mets victory last night in the traditional blue hat and pinstripe uni combo, this could be the jump-start we need for a permanent switcheroo! Another win tonight in that same combo (wishful thinking of mine on both counts)could lead to an irreversible trend in the right direction!
#3 by ESS on 10.19.06 9:03 am |
Congrats Paul! The ESPN article is the first thing in the “Spotlight” on the ESPN website this morning, along with a huge picture of the Mets, now almost 100% sans-black.

I like the World Series patch on the sleeve; not a big fan of it on the caps. In 1996, (the first appearance of cap patch??), John Wettland demanded it be sewn on his sweat faded cap. Looked strange. Stick to the sleeves.

Let me be the first (for today, anyway) to congratulate the Mets for coming out in their proper home uniforms and caps last night for the first time in postseason since 1988. (Oh, yeah, and also for winning the game.) Here’s hoping they do it again tonight, in both senses, however unlikely either might be.
TRUE METS = BLUE METS
#7 by jesse on 10.19.06 9:05 am |
Yes the Mets wore Blue hats last night. Everybody hates black Mets hats. They should ditch the black hats and only wear blue hats. Last nights win is karma saying that black hat are bad mmmkay.
Does that about cover it?
#8 by Eric on 10.19.06 9:06 am |
The great thing about the Mets having black caps and unis is that it made last night’s donning of the classic unis really magical. It was obviously a statement. And I got chills when I saw them.

I wonder if the Rockies will go to a purple to black fade on the Cool Flo helmets… that’d be pretty scary…

Do basketball jerseys have to have numbers on the back because last night my college scrimmaged a team with jerseys way to nice to be practice jerseys but they did not have numbers on the back only the front. They looked like game jerseys minus the back number,

Thanks for sticking “Patches” in my head this morning. Always a welcome piece of maudlin cheese.
You guys and your classic Mets uniforms! For strictly Pavlovian reasons, that look disgusts me. Seeing that uniform again makes this in-season Mets hater (and Phils fan) rethink rooting for them. I know, you don’t need me to root for your Mets in the postseason, but I can’t get behind this Cards team, which limped across the finish line and which features sourpuss Scott Rolen. Go Mets (preferably, in a little black)!
#14 by Cork on 10.19.06 9:22 am |
I hate to ruin it for the Merts fans out there, but most teams allow the starting pitcher to pick the uniforms for that nights game (dont know if that still holds in the playoffs). Yesterday Willie announced Oliver Perez would start tonights game. Doing a google image search shows that Perez prefers the black hats, both on the ROAD and at HOME.

Cork, get a life, you have no clue
#16 by paydirt on 10.19.06 9:39 am |
I agree with the idea that putting an extra patch on the ball caps looks weird, I guess. Just looks too big, and outta place. Maybe just WS06?, on the side, but really small, and only the letters being stitched and not a whole patch.
I think the Toronto Blue Jays need a new uniform, the one they got looks odd, too cartoonish. Their ball cap is a mess. I like how the Orioles have an actual “Oriole” stitched to their cap and not a picture of one cut out from the comic section.
#17 by Jonathon on 10.19.06 9:42 am |
the hats with the patch is a total merch ploy. the all-star game patch hat, the futures game patch hat, the american flag patch hat, the world series patch hat.
totally a merch thing. it’s like my brother, once a huge expos fan (and now a huge nats fan) buying the expos hat with the puerto rican flag patch during their exile in the caribbean.
#18 by Matthew on 10.19.06 9:47 am |
The WS hats with the patch on the side panel have always been one of my favorites.
I held off on buying any Mets playoff gear with the hope of buying their WS hat if they get there.
To each his own I guess.
#19 by Sean on 10.19.06 9:47 am |
Cork, avid readers of this column know that the NY Mets equipment manager Charlie Samuels makes the decision on which unform the Mets will wear for each game. The pitcher has no input in the matter. The only pitcher that would have had a say in the matter would have been Dwight Gooden.
#20 by Jonathon on 10.19.06 9:49 am |
at least wait and see if they win. no one wants to be the guy walking around with a padres hat with the ‘98 world series patch on it.
i just think it makes the hat look too busy. pretty soon it will be world series overload. eventually a team will wear a “special edition world series uniform” during the world series. it’s outta control.
#21 by Lou on 10.19.06 9:52 am |
The blue caps and pinstripe was the lucky move last night and they better be wearing them again. Dont worry about the starting pitcher, on the Mets the decision on what uniform to wear lies solely with clubbie Charlie Samuels (unfortunatly). His uniform choices have been disastrous for years, and he usually hates to put the team in blue/pinstripes cause he thinks it clashes with the black jackets. But last night, he went with history, and here’s hoping he does it again.
#22 by Miguel on 10.19.06 9:55 am |
You can have your jerseys from last night.
I’d rather they break out these babies.
#23 by Phil on 10.19.06 9:56 am |
Is it just a really cool touch, or a display of excess that even the Mets cool flow helmets were all blue last night? I’ve only seen the fade to black in the past.
#24 by Johnny5 on 10.19.06 10:03 am |
They have been wearing blue coolflos when they have worn blue caps all year. They have black coolflos for the black caps and the blue fade to black coolflos for the black and blue caps
#25 by LunchBox on 10.19.06 10:03 am |
As a Rockies fan, its rare the we get a mention on UniWatch without a takin a shot at the purple in our uni’s.
I was happy to hear about the switch to the CoolFlo helmets for a few minutes, until I went into photoshop and quickly (let me stress, quickly) came up with some mock designs.
All I can say now, is that the switch could turn out absolutely horrendous (and that’s only the decent looking designs). So, if anyone that is calling the shots with the Rockies is reading this, if you’re going to use the CoolFlo helmets, please stick to a 1 color design. Thanks.
#26 by Matt on 10.19.06 10:03 am |
the cool flow matches each of their uniforms… solid blue when they wear blue hats, solid black when the wear the black hats, and fade to black when the wear the black/blue hats…

#28 by John in Athens on 10.19.06 10:07 am |
If the NL had not lost in the All Star Game (despite the media hype, I never realized how much it counted!!!), the Mets could’ve have worn them next Saturday during the next GAME 6.
Any chance a case of those Cubbie batting gloves can be sent to Detroit by the weekend?
#29 by jesse on 10.19.06 10:11 am |
With Oliver Perez pitching tonite (his ERA is down to 6.45), the Mets better have a plan superior than simply wearing blue hats.

“Wasn’t Endy Chavez in Menudo?”

in regards to the Cards navy hat, they’ve worn it for aover 30 years from 1940 - 1964 and from 1992 to now, so yes there is some tradition behind it…
and to say the navy hats are as bad as the black with the Mets…come on are you serious? atleast the navy looks good when matched with the grays…and it’s not this
also to the Mets fans, it’s about time they wore the pinstripes…not a big fan of the Mets, but love the pinstripes and blue and orange hats

As a graduate of Illinois, I feel the need to stick up for the orange pants (even though we have foolishly abandoned them this year). It was always nice to have something to set us apart from the rest of the 90 or so D-1A programs who have no shot at the national title, even if that thing was an obnoxiously colored pair of pants. Plus, it promotes unity between the team and the fans who turn out decked in orange despite the fact that orange looks good on absolutely no one. It’s easy to get a crowd to show up wearing red or blue. People who will voluntarilly wear orange are dedicated and should be applauded.

You know, even though I am a Mets fan - I will say I have always loved the Cardinals unis - even the powder blues. However, no uniform in the world will ever look good on Ronnie Belliard…or his tongue. If anyone looks like the first person to wear those stupid New Era alternate designs like the dogtags and all that other ridiculous crap on the field - it’ll be Ronnie “Thug Life” Belliard.
Just mentioning him, I am brought to Christine Taylor in Dodgeball as she utters the famous line…”I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.”

As mentioned, the Mets starting pitcher does not choose the uniform/hat combination, a decision that is made by the Mets’ infinitely wise equipment manager, Charlie Samuels. But, for the record…
Perez started five road games (including NLCS) this season, and has worn the grey uniform black/blue hat combo each time. He has three home starts, two in which he wore white with the black/blue hats. His one start in pinstripes (9/20 vs. Florida)…he donned the black/blue hats with the dreaded black sleeves.

Ian, nuber 82 on the left seems to have the same font as 76 does.
I have some 1995 Angels BP jerseys and they use two different fonts — one with basic block numerals like the Mets, A’s, Cardinals, and maybe half of MLB uses, and then another ‘full-block’ one like what the Yankees wear, with a base on the bottom of the 1 and 7. At the time the Angels’ main uniforms only had the extra-blocky one. The most interesting jersey is number 78 Juan Agosto, who has a full-block 7 and a plain-block 8!

I mentioned last week at some point that we (Clemson) were hinting at the solid purple uniforms. I’ve already emailed a few of my pals on the team and told them that they need to quit smoking crack and that looking like a big crown royal bag is NOT the way to play a football game. Also, in my opinion, the ONLY uniforms we should be wearing are orange jersey/white pants at Death Valley, and solid white on the road. But maybe that’s just me.

I’m also suprise more people haven’t commented on the Bucks new green and red jersey. Much better than the old purple monstrosities.

Would if I could. (Remember: it’s the thought that counts.)

Paul I’d love to see you rank the MLB from top to bottom in uni awesomeness. Just throwing it out there.

For some reason the Cardinals have never worn the Sunday hat in the postseason. I’m not sure why…it just always has been that way.

Glad to see your back Ek. Moving sucks. Two questions for ya - 1. Where did the Nike counter go?
and
2. We hadn’t had any visits from them (Nike) in a while, did they get wise and change up what they were doing to monitor us?

I honesty hope that the Cardinals win tonight just so we can move on from talking about the Mets and their black hats. Honestly, it’s getting very old logging in and only reading about “how terrible black is”. Granted I’m not the biggest fan of black uniforms if it shouldn’t be there. But still if the Mets win, you know the message board will be filled once again bad mouthing black hats. Go Cards

Actually, the radio report i heard came from a source who knew somebody who worked for the unnamed sponsor. So it is a sponsorship thing. The Travesty!
NO!!!!!!!!!!! i really thought we were above that… at least its mts and ny institution and not some random sponsor

As a lifelong Cardinals fan, I have stated here that I liked the black uni’s for the Mets, but after watching last night, and seeing the Blue with the pinstripes? You guys have won me over, ditch the black and stick with that classic look.
NEXT year of course…I’m hoping you won’t have the opportunity to wear black OR Blue again this season after tonight!

I removed it today, we weren’t getting many hits. Plus, I think the point was made. They might have changed their IP, and unless there is another incident, I’m content to let it go.

honestly, I think it’d be preferable if the Rockies emphasized the purple more.
mostly just because those UG-LEE black vests with black undershirts are possibly the worst uniform ever. they’d look better in a solid purple jersey (no vest) with white numbers/Rockies wordmark outlined in black. I mean, discounting the fact that they should be wearing white at home and gray on the road, because it’s baseball. Purple hats instead of the black ones would be cool.
now I’m just rambling. I can’t believe I spent all those words extolling the virtues of purple.

I don’t know what the hell is going on with my comments. I’m going insane. I give up.

You mean like this, but with the black and white switched. I think they should completely change to something along these lines.

My local college summer league team used to wear black vests with yellow shirts and the other way around..and for some reason, they switched to black/black and yellow/yellow halfway through last season. Horrible!
Thankfully this season they went to solid yellow at home and black on the road.

paydirt said:
“I think the Toronto Blue Jays need a new uniform, the one they got looks odd, too cartoonish. Their ball cap is a mess”.
(I wish I knew how to post a pic of it, to show everybody here), but why can’t they just use a traditional letter “J” with a Blue Jay claw as an apostrophe and a small “s”. Or even stitching an image of an actual Blue Jay on the cap, like the Cards and O’s..sharp!

UW,
The buckner article has made the collegehumor.com hotlinks section..now drunken college kids can read the uniwatch while lokoing at pictures of coeds making out with each other…

Anybody else see the Buffalo Bills have the worst white uniforms in the league? What ARE those things?, their dark ones look good.
Again, I wish I knew how to post a pic.

Go to the webpage you want to link to, copy the address from the address bar, click link button in on top of the comments box, paste the link in the box that pops up(erase the http:// thats already there cause you probably have it in what you copied) Hit ok. Then after whatever it puts into the comment box type what you want in green and underlined, then hit the link button again.
that should do it, hope that helps

I’m glad that the Rocks did make a return to the black uni’s, but I wish it wasn’t a vest. The older black Rockies uniforms were a perfect alternate in my mind. Only if it said Colorado on it.
I really do like their current home and away jeserys, and their alternate home jersey/vest isn’t too bad either.
I did like their purple jerseys, but I’d prefer either white, gray or black.
They did go with a purple cap (2 years ago I think it was) to go with their away jerseys, but it never caught on. Their other Alternate cap is a good mix of black/purple.
