As most of you know, I’ve been mildly obsessed this season with the growing phenomenon of MLB players who write things under their cap visors. (For those who missed it, here’s the ESPN column I devoted to this topic a few months back.) Then, in a separate underbill development, a few weeks ago I passed along news from a National League source who said there would be changes to all MLB caps next year — including a switch from gray underbills to black.
I originally assumed there was no connection between these two stories, and that the switch to black was due to the increasingly popular school of thought that black underbills are better for reducing glare. But last week on Chris Creamer’s message boards, buried in the midst of a long discussion of the Diamondbacks’ new logos (which I’ll have more to say about soon, promise), there was this:
A friend inside MLB said that the inscriptions by players (number, initials, etc.) are getting out of hand, and changing the underbill [to black] was one way to eliminate the problem without getting into potential backlash from players and media.
Faaaaaascinating. If this is true, it raises some interesting points:
• Black brims wouldn’t eliminate underbill inscriptions, since players could still use silver Sharpies (although I agree that fewer players would do that, because there’s just something counterintuitive about writing on a black surface).
• Why is the MLB office so worked up about underbill scribblings anyway? Assuming you can see them at all, they’re usually illegible, so what’s the problem? They’re a charming quirk, and are among the very few ways that a player can personalize his uniform without being all “Look at me!” about it. Eliminating them — or trying to — is a short-sighted move.
• Whether it’s the White House or the MLB office, anytime someone is paranoid about “media backlash,” it’s a pretty safe bet they’re doing something stupid.
Meanwhile, we can add two more players to the ranks of the underbill scribblers. The first is Nationals reliever Jon Rauch, who’s got something fairly elaborate — although it’s not clear what — written on his home and road caps. The second is Cleveland’s Shin-Soo Choo (already notable for his double-flapped batting helmet), whose underbill notation appears to be written in Korean. If the closing days of this season really do constitute the twilight of the gray underbill, Rauch and Choo may go down as the last players to take full advantage of it.
(The Choo pics, incidentally, are courtesy of Toronto photographer Aaron Reynolds, who’s generously offered to make his vast photo archive available for Uni Watch research purposes — thanks, man!)
Uni Watch News Ticker: We weren’t the only ones talking about logo leaks yesterday — look here. … Bryan Redemske has gotten an advance copy of this book (due out in about three weeks) and says the photos feature some fantastic uni details, including a shot of Honus Wagner with a little “P P” collar embroidery — never seen that before. Full report to follow when I can get my hands on a copy. … Monday’s nomination for the worst prep uniform ever brought several competing picks, the most notable of which was Riverside High in South Carolina (props to Ronnie Poore). … Speaking of high school teams, great article here about high school teams that use college or pro helmet logo designs (with thanks to P.J. Mallardi). … Notes you may have missed from yesterday’s Comments section: Rice players will wear a “39″ helmet decal for the rest of the season, in memory of teammate Dale Lloyd, who died on Sunday (with thanks to Richard Grossman). … And Adam Denob noticed that Panthers kicker John Kasey was wearing a watch in Sunday’s game against Tampa.

Cool article about the high school uniforms using pro and college logos. I always preferred seeing schools with original logos as opposed to just taking a well known logo and changing it to your own school colors. Of course, my old high school hit a double whammy on this one, going from the Michigan Wolverines styled helmet to the Florida State arrow, just in green and yellow instead of blue and maize or garnet and gold.

When I was in high school, the Pittsburgh Maulers spent their one season in the USFL. They practiced at an empty school in our district. When the Maulers closed up shop, they donated their uniforms - and everything else (weights, practice gear) to the district. Fortunately both teams wore PURPLE, so it was a smooth transition.

i believe that this is done intentionally. if you notice, the jersey “template” differs based on position played. skill positions have a different jersey template than say, those in the trenches. why? i would say simply because their equipment must react differently to the kind of play their position warrants. just like players gloves differ, shoulder pads, facemasks, knee braces, shoes, etc.

My HS used Air Force’s helmet decal but on a yellow helmet and one big rival had the ’70s Atlanta Falcons helmet with colors reversed.
Weird note: in and around Denver Budweiser has posters, banners and mirros displayed on and in bars that show the various helmet designs used by the Broncos over the years. The designer must be a UniWatch type as they included the late ’60s blue design with a gray facemask separately from the same design with the white facemask that came a bit later. Sad that my team has never had a very good looking helmet.

I thought about that but the player I noticed that didn’t match Bush was Joe Horn. Also, Drew Brees and this guy don’t have their jersey cut like that either. The Vince jersey is the best photo to show the cut I was talking about.
I think it just comes down to the shape of the player and how tight they want their jersey. The only problem is they look like two different jerseys.
Also, the Bengals orange yoke shows how different size players need different tailoring.
It seems that every jersey in the league is custom fit to the player. Are these alterations done “in house” or does reebok do it?

About a decade ago, my local high school football team (Chelsea, MI) changed its uniforms to a very ND-like look. It wasn’t a radical departure; the old uniforms had dark blue jerseys and mustard yellow pants, so the jerseys aren’t too different. And the helmets have always been gold. (Sorry — I don’t know if there are any online pictures of the old jerseys. I started photographing the team only last year.)
I don’t know if they consciously emulated Notre Dame’s look, or if it was coincidental. But I think they look good on the field.

At first I was surprised this story didn’t make the Florida article on logos, but then I remembered where the team involved was from…
In the mid-1990s, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were looking to crack down on unlicesned use of their creamsicle-era Buccaneer Bruce logo. They turned their attention to Beloit College, a Division III school in southern Wisconsin with an enrollment of 1300 (including my brother). Beloit’s teams go by the name Buccaneers as well, and their logo happens to look a lot like a mirrored version of Bucco Bruce. Tampa Bay was going to take legal action until it was discovered that Beloit College had been using the logo since well before 1976, the year the NFL expanded for the Bucs. Tampa Bay retracted its claim and slunk off to redesign their entire uniform, while Beloit’s teams still use this logo (on admittedly unpleasant unis) to this day.
Can’t find any real confirmation of this online (I doubt Tampa Bay would want to publicize it), but I heard it from a few sources growing up.

On the high school logo front, there was a high school near my hometown that was the “Fighting Kellys” and used Notre Dame’s mascot logo, facing it the other direction. Word has it that Notre Dame gave them a ‘cease and desist’ order.
The school where I used to teach took Wisconsin’s motion ‘W’ and made the middle ‘prong’ a point, rather than blocked off like UW’s. I guess they assumed it was changed enough but there was no question was it was patterned after.

Pity on the black underbills; I excitedly bought and wore a new M’s cap all summer with the black underbill, only to discern it’s just not as aesthetically balanced as the old grey underbills. What’s next? Is Penn State going to go after high schools with a navy stripe on their helmet? Maybe Nebraska can sue a high school for using a capital ‘N’ on their helmet. The Tigers might not mind the black underbills. They let Kenny Rogers wear it. Or to be more precise, they let Rogers wear his performance 3930 BP caps during regular games. He blacks out the colored stripe in the bill. You can tell, b/c 3930’s have a lower profile, and a dark underbill.

Not for using a navy stripe but for use of its copyrighted images and logos…Penn State is very protective of those images and I know they have sent cease and desist letters to High Schools (Permian High School, of Friday Night Lights fame, used to use the chipmunk Lion logo). Incidentally, “Penn State†is trade mark of the Pennsylvania State University and can’t be used on a t-shirt without the permission of the University. Notre Dame cannot copyright Navy Blue, Gold or helmets with nothing on them; hence they are fair game to your local high school.
Duquesne University and the Detroit Tigers had protracted litigation over the use of the script D, based primarily over who used it first. It settled when they agreed the script D’s they were using were slightly different. For similar reasons there can be no litigation over the use of the “winged” design favored by Princeton and Michigan, since both schools have used it for so long, although as any uniwatch reader knows, Princeton used it first.
On another (similar) matter, I believe that the Seahawks and Eagles and Tampa all created new colors for the express purpose of obtaining legal protection for the use of that color. While you can’t patent Navy Blue, you protect “Seahawk Blueâ€, if you can prove you invented it. I notice this because I live in Pittsburgh which is rife with Black and Yellow hats that simply say “Pittsburgh”, which is perfectly legal under copyright laws. Because the name of a city, or common colors such as Black and Yellow cannot be protected under trademark or copyright laws.
#55 by Elwood on 09.27.06 12:31 pm |
Trademark holders have to defend their trademarks or risk losing them. They are not frivolous lawsuits.
I also doubt that Penn State has a trademark for a stripe or that Nebraska has a trademark for a simple block N.

One instance I know of is Oglethorpe County using the Patriots ‘Flying Elvis’ logo http://www.oglethorp... notice how the logo is all over the web site lol. I became aware of this through family connections that worked in that school system for 30 plus years. So there seems to be some sort of legal process to use a logo if the owner of that logo is willing to allow a high school to use it. Personally I’d prefer to see schools with there own original logos if possible rather than modifying an existing one.

Some Nationals relievers have their nicknames either written or burned on their cap underbills. I think this was former bullpen coach John Wetteland’s innovation. Back in 2000, Kansas State sued a high school from my hometown of Flower Mound, TX over use of their Powercat logo. K State uses purple while the school (Flower Mound High Jaguars) used navy & gold, and added whiskers and spots. Here is their version of the Powercat logo.
With all the borrowed logos from pro and college, it surprised me when K State pressed with litigation. The school had only been open for 6 months and had to change their uniforms and re-floor the gym with a different logo.
Of interest to me is how their new helmet logo resembles the NY Jets helmet logo. No lawsuit from the Jets though…
Luckily I went to crosstown Marcus High School, where we had our own idea of what a “good logo” is. Luckily the uniform looks like this.

The oval G was originated by the Green Bay Packers then in the sixties Vince Dooley had an athletic department employee modify it for UGA’s use. Later on Green Bay gave UGA & Grambling the permission to use it.
Another interesting case of a high school team using a college or NFL logo is the Grayson Rams, there helmet has the famous Ram horns & the secondary logo is the oval G. http://www.graysonra...

Paul may be happy to now that Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua NH uses Packers replica uniforms. In fact, when the school started in the early 60’s, the Packers donated the uniforms. Urban legend has it that former Lions QB Greg Landry of Nashua was the go between to make this happen. The only drawback is that Bishop Guertin’s nickname is the Cardinals (Catholic connection: Bishop, Cardinal, duhh) and they occasionally slap a red replica cardinals logo on their uniforms.

This was pretty cool I wonder if anyone has ever thought of actually using these for a H.S. football team

That is a cool idea to create MLB football helmets, if for nothing else than to see what they look like. But I thought they really messed some of them up. Why would the Pirates have metallic gold helmets instead of black or yellow? And I can’t imagine the Tigers using the D with the tiger instead of the old English D.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I would have also like to see this Birds on Bat than this STL. There were some other I didn’t prefer either.

I guess he has an aversion to wool. Probably just uses a black or navy sharpie to darken the brim.
Finally! Kenny Rogers’ hat has been bothering me all season since he’s been with the Tigers. I couldn’t figure out if it was just a batting practice cap or if it was something else that was specially made. thanks for the clarification

I have SI’s “The Football Book.” It is pretty detailed and interesting. Of course, lots of vintage photographs that are handy for reference. I hope their baseball version is as good.

The Marchus uniform looks better than the logo. But even it is a copy of the old Ohio State uniform.

My high school’s mascot is the Eagles, so they copy the basic outline of the Philaedelphia Eagles uniforms, only in red in white.
They uniforms used to be maroon and white (home jerseys solid red-maroon jerseys and white pants, reverse for road uniforms…very classy), but much to my dismay I have discovered in the 5 1/2 years since I graduated that they are now supplied by Adidas and have horrific red swathes over the shoulders of an otherwise white jersey which can be sort of seen here: http://www.sths.org/...
It was all this talk of High School uniforms that caused me to look up my alma mater’s uniforms and now I wish I hadn’t. Ignorance was bliss.

My high school has a similar logo to the New England Patriots.
I’m not sure when the Patriots started using their new logo, but my school opened in 1992, and I think they had that logo the whole time.
I don’t know for sure though. I was 8.
They are the Champlin Park Rebels, if anyone cares to search.

Hey, James, there’s no need for name-calling. Come on, now.
My high school football team: Irondale Knights. Classy, even with the monochrome look. However, I don’t know what the hell is up with this. I think they are dancers for the marching band. What the?

I just got a new Star Struck catalog. On page 29 is a new jacket from Majestic called “Alternate Color Premier Jacket”. They have a navy blue Cardinals jacket, the Braves and Pirates jackets are red. The Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox jackets are gray. And the Mets alternate color is blue.

Sure there is, that idiot mispelled the name.
Actually, Adam will be a groomsman in my upcoming wedding so it was all in fun. He has already called me about it. And besides, he already knows he’s an idiot.

Keep in mind that the old Princeton/Michigan winged helmet with three front-to-back stripes was leather, and the wings and stripes were actually additional pieces of leather stitched onto the shell.
And BTW I believe the U. of Delaware sports a slightly lighter shade of blue than Michigan’s virtually navy tone.

Looks like she’s part of the flag corps. It’s not unusual for them to have different color outfits and/or flags than the regular school colors, at least for my school. (I don’t know about PINK though!)
